Mertell was originally a carpenter's apprentice in a small village. However, after a year of apprenticing he decided that he was destined to be something greater than a small town carpenter. He set out to visit his aged uncle who was a wizard in order to be trained in the mystic arts. But after a few years of study, Mertell learned that he did not have the innate ability required to be a great magician so he left his uncle to become a journeyman, travelling the land, working as a carpenter. He travelling for several years this way, learning skills as a woodsman as he went.

Now Mertell has joined the Circle of Swords [the PCs] as a jack-of-all-trades. He serves the parties magical needs, as well as fighting and helping in woodland survival. He believes the Circle of Swords will finally help him achieve the fame that he deserves.

He has recently found a book of Elemental Air Spells, so he has been studying its new spells recently. He is also learning the art of thievery from his companion, Hanikar the Rogue.
