Daily Illuminator Archive for August 2011
August 1, 2011:
Nearly all of us have friends we trust to help us deal with the little problems in our lives. However, what if those problems are big? . . .
August 2, 2011:
I took July off . . . at least, that was the theory. I was sure ready for it . . .
August 3, 2011:
Tomorrow is a day months in the making. Tomorrow is the first of four days of gaming, game shopping, and geeking out in Indianapolis . . .
August 4, 2011:
Did you know that Pyramid
editor Steven Marsh is a yo-yo fan? Each year he attends the World Yo-Yo Contest . . . and so I dedicate today's Card of the Week to him . . . . .
August 5, 2011:
Gen Con is a massive experience, with something like 31,746 things to catch your attention. Describing it would take many more words than I can type before carpal tunnel sets in, so I'll cheat by just posting pictures -- after all, each one is worth a thousand words . . .
August 6, 2011:
Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld
novels have become classics in their own time. Their influence on modern fantasy has been profound; they have entire conventions dedicated to them, and they've inspired spin-off media that include art books, TV adaptations, and games . . .
August 7, 2011:
As the delightful Felicia Day mentioned in her panel at San Diego Comic-Con, The Guild
will have its very own Munchkin
expansion next spring. We're keeping the details under wraps for the moment, but you may want to watch The Guild
's fifth season -- airing now in a variety of places . . .
August 8, 2011:
As they say on the internet, "crazy idea is crazy." But when that crazy idea involves putting Munchkin Axe Cop
in front of Ethan Nicolle's panel at San Diego Comic Con, how can we resist? We're not made of stone, after all . . .
August 9, 2011:
Take an ordinary deck of cards. Pull out the two of diamonds and put it aside . . .
August 10, 2011:
Monday and Tuesday before San Diego Comic-Con, I had the pleasure of visiting four game stores in and around Los Angeles. The Game Ogre in Northridge was my first stop, and as it's Ethan "Axe Cop" Nicolle's home store as well, we got to talk about Munchkin Axe Cop
with the assembled masses . . .
August 11, 2011:
What makes this edition "deluxe"? It's got a big gameboard to keep your cards in place, and six colored pawns that you move on the gameboard as you level up! . . .
August 12, 2011:
With San Diego Comic-Con and Gen Con just finished, and PAX Prime looming, it occurs to me that I've forgotten to mention a new local convention that's happening this weekend. Austin Board Game Bash is happening at the Doubletree in downtown Austin, and will have two days of folks sitting around and playing games . . . all kinds of games . . .
August 13, 2011:
It seems like every other day Phil wanders into my office and plays with the samples of Giant Cthulhu Dice
. They're the perfect size for gripping, and squishy enough for bouncing off the floor . . . or the wall next to my head . . .
August 14, 2011:
Though only figuratively . . . at this stage. Cyborgs aren't just the stuff of "Ah-nold's" films; they're happening here and now . . .
August 15, 2011:
The problem with shopping for a mentalist is that he generally knows what you're going to get him before he unwraps the package. For this common problem, we at e23 have a modest solution . . .
August 16, 2011:
I haven't done a good enough job recently of communicating the status of Ogre 6th Edition
. The status is: Still planned, still the super-fancy as per the prototypes you can see on that page (and which I expect will show up in the display case at PAX in a couple of weeks) . . . . .
August 17, 2011:
Here's what will be shipping in November, just in time for holiday stocking stuffing!
Cthulhu Dice (Sparkly Pink Die)
Serving Cthulhu is fun . . . except for all those other cultists out to get you. So get them first!
lets you drive your rivals mad . . . very, very quickly . . .
August 18, 2011:
Those of you following us on Twitter have already seen these, but for the rest of you I have added a batch of pictures to our Gen Con 2011 set at Flickr. These are all shots I took during the show with my BlackBerry, so be prepared to see whatever random fun caught my eye while I was working in the booth . . .
August 19, 2011:
This will be a short report from Worldcon at Reno. It would be longer, but we're about to head out for the Girl Genius
Steampunk dance . . .
August 21, 2011:
Yesterday I got so excited about the possibility of the first copies of Reindeer Games
being available at PAX Prime, I forgot to mention that Andrew will be doing a signing! On Saturday, August 27, he'll be in Room 201 signing whatever munchkinly things you put in front of him . . .
August 22, 2011:
At the time of the "war of currents" between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, Edison proved to be a key figure in the invention of the electric chair. Edison hoped to spread the idea that alternating current was more dangerous than his own direct-current method of providing power . . .
August 23, 2011:
GURPS Fourth Edition supplements. Specifically, we've released GURPS Psi-Tech

technology that tends to accompany psionic powers in fiction . . .
August 24, 2011:
A couple of nifty new things slipped into the warehouse under the cover of night, so we decided to put them up for sale. Fair warning: Quantities on these are limited, so make your order quickly.
Cthulhu Sherpa Case
Have you seen the mark of Cthulhu? . . .
August 26, 2011:
Sadly, during the rush of convention season we've fallen behind on the customer service issues from e23. We're not happy about this state of affairs, but we're digging through the queue as quickly as possible . . .
August 27, 2011:
The majority of the Austin HQ is in Seattle right now, doing the convention thing at PAX Prime. If you're attending as well, stop by either the Corral or Room 201 -- both are on the second level, and both will fill your heart with glee! . . .
August 28, 2011:
The following items should be on store shelves now!
Munchkin Zombies 2 – Armed and Dangerous
Return of the (un)Living Munchkins! Shuffle and shamble your way to victory with 112 new cards for Munchkin Zombies
. . .
August 29, 2011:
If you're like me, when you think of Los Angeles you probably think of Hollywood, celebrities, beautiful weather, and the covert war between Heaven and Hell waiting to erupt into violence. That last one may be further down the list of your immediate thoughts . . .
August 30, 2011:
While at the San Diego Comic Con in July one of the most common questions I kept hearing was: "Will you be at the New York Comic Con in October?"
I can now say that yes, I will be at the show, and I'll even have completely new games available, thanks to my good friends at Onell Design, who have offered to let me use their booth for one afternoon. On Saturday, October 15, visit me at booth #578 between 1 pm and 4 pm to learn games like Zombie Dice
and Cthulhu Dice
, to ask me any questions about our newest releases, and to have a chance to grab unreleased games and expansions that will debut that afternoon . . .
August 31, 2011:
As Tycho says, it usually takes days before the experiences at PAX can be fully assimilated into our consciousness. Of course, we need to capture as many initial impressions as possible, and that's what we use Flickr for . . .
