Lucifer struggled in futility as he was held in Michael's grip. Battered and wounded, he still had some strength left, but every effort to free himself only resulted in Michael tightening his embrace, causing him searing agony he hadn't felt since the Fall. Still, he did not scream, just fought past the pain and tried again. All around him lay the remnants of his forces. Burnt and bloodied vessels, abandoned and destroyed artifacts, the ringing symphonic echoes of soul death, were all that was left of his once mighty Infernal Horde. Among the slain were some of his mightiest Princes, and the ones who hadn't died had fled weakened and wounded back to Hell, where they hoped to make one last desperate stand. Hell's defeat seemed all but final. Yet even in defeat he refused to be beaten. He was determined to deny Michael his rest, to deny Heaven at least one victory. "Release me Michael and I'll spare your life! I'll break free eventually, you know that. All your struggle buys you is my wrath!" To this He Who Is Like God smirked and replied, "A liar to the end, eh? You must be desperate to try your lies on me. It didn't work then and it won't work now. I know the Truth." With that the first angel wrenched his hold tighter, and Lucifer forced down a scream as he felt another Force tear away from him. Suddenly there was a Presence upon the field, and the Light of Heaven illuminated the combatants. The two figures averted their eyes, one out of reverence, one out of pain, as the Holy Radiance shone down upon them. "MICHAEL, RELEASE HIM," said a voice both firm and gentle, a voice Lucifer hadn't heard in eons, "LET HIM GO AND RETURN TO HEAVEN. I WISH TO SPEAK WITH HIM ALONE." Michael's grip loosened, and then was gone. Lucifer found himself alone on the plain. Alone except for God. Ignoring the pain it gave him, Lucifer forced himself to stare into the Light. He could not show weakness, not show fear, not even to Him. Especially to Him. "If you're expecting some sort of gratitude for sparing me for a moment, then I'm sorry to disappoint you. I know how this has to end. So save us both the time and strike me down now. Because I will never concede defeat." The Light of Heaven disappeared, or more acccurately, coelesced into a humanoid figure. In the place of the Divine Radiance was an elderly, gray-haired man wearing spectacles. He wore a light brown shirt and pants, and his kind face had an expression of sadness on it. "I don't care about winning and losing," said God sadly, "I never wanted this day to come. It was your choices which led to The War. Your choices which led to The Final Battle. It doesn't have to end the way you say. Even now you have a choice." "A choice!" said Lucifer angrily, "What choice? The choice to get on my knees and beg for forgiveness like some pathetic, lowly servitor? To return to Heaven a pariah, an outcast loathed by the Host and the Blessed, condemned to irrelevancy in the scheme of things? If that's the choice then I choose oblivion. Better nonexistence than such a hideous fate!" "I'm sorry you feel that way," replied God, shaking his head sorrowfully, "I had hoped, that even with all that's happened, you could still find some desire to redeem within you. To rejoin Heaven once more." "Spare me your pity and sentiment. I fought against you and lost. That's all there is to it. Just get it over with and destroy me now." Lucifer closed his eyes and bowed his head, waiting for the inevitable end. "Lucifer," said God quietly, "I'm not going to kill you." He reached over and placed a hand on Lucifer's chin. Lucifer looked up startled and concerned." "What will you do then? Have Michael and the others kill me for sport? Drag me back to Heaven in chains for Dominic to try? Diminish me to a reliever?" "I'm going to give you what you've always wanted." And with that power flowed from God's fingers, restoring Lucifer to what he was before Armageddon. "I'm going to to give you the Symphony." Curious and confused as his full power was restored to him Lucifer stammered "Wha-What do you mean by that?" "I'm returning to the Upper Heavens, and taking the others with me. The angels, the blessed, demons who desire redemption, humans who choose to go, I'm taking them all and leaving. The rest I leave to you. Earth, The Marches, Hell, and all the Fallen, Damned, and ones who wish to remain. It's all yours. You wish to be alone, to be separated from my Presence. Well then I grant you your wish. My last gift to you, child. I only wish it didn't have to be this way." God's form dissolved into light and grew until the Divine Radiance filled the entire plain. Lucifer looked up and shouted in all directions. "You mean it's all mine? No interference from you?" "THERE SHALL BE NO INTERFERENCE WITH FREE WILL. THE SYMPHONY IS YOURS, AS IS THE BURDEN OF MAINTAINING IT..." And as the Light slowly faded away Lucifer wondered for a second whether he made the right choice. Then he dismissed such notions. It was much too late for regrets. And The Bands Played On: A Bright Victory, Gray Aftermath Campaign Setting: Armageddon has come and gone. The Host have won, and left the field victorious, taking the deserving who chose to go with them. All that remains are the Fallen, the Damned, the Ethereals and their faithful, and any humans and angels who chose to stay. Heaven is closed, but everything else falls under the Symphony of Lucifer. Lucifer Lucifer has found out that playing God is not all that it's cracked up to be. It's a full time job. Where as before Armageddon he devoted most of his time and power to confounding the will of God and managing The War now most of his time and power are tied up maintaining the Symphony in the absence of God, lest everything slowly grind to a halt. The result of this is that he is even more remote from the events of Earth and Hell than before, and the only way he involves himself in the doings of his subjects is by Interventions. Now that he is in his new position, Lucifer finds that he has no particular favorites, but just intervenes for or against someone depending on his current whims. A 666 is a favorable intervention for the one who rolls it. You've caught Lucifer's fancy for the moment, and he wants to reward you. A 111 means you've gained Lucifer's temporary ire, or he thinks that adding complications to your life would be amusing. Other than that, Lucifer remains as removed from the World as God was before. It must come with the Job. The New Factions When Armageddon began the strength of Hell left to enage the Host's forces on Earth. The damned souls remained behind, along with a number of demons and demonlings determined to be enough to keep the humans in line. And they would have too, if the humans were a disorganized, poorly motivated rabble without hope. Unfortunately for the demons, that was not the case. One common mistake many demons make is to underestimate the cunning, resourcefulness, and sheer capacity for treachery of humans, and they had made that mistake yet again. For millenia demons have been treating the Damned in Hell as nothing more than essence batteries. In some principalities they got treated better than in others but for all intents and purposes they were thought of as beings of no consequence. It was this attitude which caused them to overlook the fact that underneath their very noses humans had formed a secret organization, and had been quietly gathering knowledge and resources, waiting patiently for the right time to enact their plans. With Armageddon the day had come at last, and all the centuries of planning finally came to fruition. Among the leaders of the organization was a sorceror who claimed to be the legendary Faust, who had been working in the Archives. Using the knowledge of deeper mysteries he managed to glean from the books he worked with, he and a cabal of his fellows travelled to the Chasm in Abaddon. Once there, Faust managed to use his knowledge to harvest the Forces in the Chasm. The others he granted power equal to that of powerful celestials, but it was Faust himself who gained the real prize. Using the power he had gained, and the mallebility of the Symphony at the time of transference between God and Lucifer, he somehow managed to gain enough power to equal a Demon Prince, and even convinced the Symphony to give him the Word of Knowledge. No one is exactly sure how he did it, but some theorize just as Lucifer used his power as a Baleseraph to lie to the Symphony to grant Words, Faust had managed in the transition time to win a Will War with the Symphony and command it to grant him Knowledge. Using their new found power, Faust and the others went about augmenting other humans with Forces to make them more formidable. Former Soldiers had taught others songs, and they had managed to steal artifacts and weapons. All this, combined with the fact that the Damned just plain outnumbered the demons in Hell, meant that when the Infernal Horde returned from Armageddon weakened by their defeat, humans were a credible threat. After a series of skirmishes, battles, and shows of power, Faust managed to gain some allies among the surviving Princes, mostly from among those whose Words are strongly supported by Humanity. The rest of the Princes were hardliners who wish to stick with the old way of doing things. Open warefare hasn't broken out yet, but the threat remains. Here's how the factions line up: The Enlightened: The Traditionalists: Neutral: Dead: Faust Asmodeus Malphas Baal Lilith Kronos Alaemon Haagenti Andrealphus Belial Furfur Kobal Magog Beleth Nybbas Fleurity Valefor (MIA) Mammon Vapula Saminga (Bound into Servitude due to losing a Will War, his Servitors can be found on all on all sides) The Enlightened believe they can make a Heaven out of Hell, or at least carve out a pleasant existence from eternity. Lilith supports the cause wholeheartedly, because freeing humans and a free society greatly supports her word. Kobal is in because he finds a revolution in Hell funny and ironic. Nybbas is in because humans make some of the best content for Media, as well as the best customers, and it is the hip happening thing right now. Andrealphus is in because the rest of the Shal-mari Princes are, and free or not, humans will always support his word. And Mammon sees great opportunity and wants to get in on the ground floor. All possess Words humans find palabtle in supporting, and thus see their hand strengthened by this new development. The Traditionalists wants the old Hell, a return to the status quo. Asmodeus is the leader of this group, and is deeply commited to the cause (well, as committed as a djinn can be). He sees the Enlightened as being directly opposed to his Word, as they are trying to break the Rules of The Game. Kronos opposes them because they are attempting to go against their Fate, and actually make a pleasant life out of what should be the darkest point of their existence. Belial opposes the Enlightened because he likes to burn humans, and most humans if given a choice would rather not be set on fire. Magog is against them for similar reasons, for he desires to infict cruelty upon all the souls he can. And Vapula and Fleurity oppose it due to their Habbalah natures. They're the dammned. They're not supposed to be enjoying the afterlife. If they were they'd be in Heaven. Malphas, of course, remains neutral, trying to stir up trouble for both sides. Alaemon also is neutral, because such a cold war encourages intrigue and secrets, which supports his word. Among the dead Baal, Haagenti, Furfur, and Valefor were killed during Armageddon (Valefor is missing, presumed dead). Their orphaned servitors can be found on all sides. Saminga confronted Faust after he emerged from the Chasm and arrograntly accepted his challenge to a Will War. He lost. And the Beleth, already weakened and despondent from her costly victory over Bladine, was killed in a joint attack by Faust's forces and the Ethereal Gods. Then there are the new Princes, elevated to Superiorhood by their respective sides to hold strategically important Words. Examples of this with the Enlightened include Boral, Prince of Warfare, and Sparkarus, Prince of Science. Among the Traditionalists are those such as Larael, Prince of The Gun, and Nerex, Prince of Terror. (There are more, I just haven't thought of them yet. Suggestions for new Princes are welcome) The Marches With Bladine and Beleth among the slain, the Marches are held by the Ethereals once more. Most of the Pantheons have mutual pacts of defense, should Hell decide to enroach against them. They also have a tenative alliance with the Enlightened, because human dreams are important to Ethereals, and they want to keep a sorceror with the power of a Superior on their good side. The various gods of Sleep and Dreams are working together divide the former duties of Bladine and Beleth among them, and see that dreamers aren't preyed upon by other beings. The Marches themselves are considered neutral ground, and the Pantheons will try nip any possibilities of major battles occuring there. Of course, there are those War gods, who love any excuse for a fight. The Corporeal Realm Earth, as always, is a battleground. With the angels and their soldiers mostly out of the way, both sides are working to claim territory and resources on Earth. The only ones who were left on Earth were those who met their Fate and those who chose to stay. They're the neutrals, who could be swayed to either side. Both sides are sending forces up their to promote their interests. Even damned humans can get vessels to go to Earth now, either due to a subtle change in the Symphony or the possibility that Faust learned how to make Infernal Saints. In addition to all the other reasons to want Earth, there are a number of artifacts and resources leftover from Armageddon which belonged to both demons AND ANGELS. Also lurking on Earth are a number of mercenary undead, sorcerors, pagans faithful to the Ethereals, and maybe even The Dozen. Heaven Little is known about Lower Heaven except for the fact that it is still around. Great storms and reality distortions occur on its border with the Marches, which few have attempted to cross, and fewer still have claimed to return. It is theorized Lower Heaven is still part of God's Symphony and the storms are cause by the clash of God and Luicifer's Symphonies causing feedback. Tethers to Heaven all lie dormant, all though there have been rumors of some being able to somehow activate one. They ways into Heaven from the Marches are closed, though there are rumors of a hidden path on Gabriel's Volcano which one can take if one is worthy and deterimined enough. Tales say the Light of Heaven still shines on abandoned Cathedrals. Other stories say their are still angels in Heaven, that the Tsaydim have stayed behind to guard Heaven from any who would defile its purity with their presence. Tales even less believed state that Uriel himself has returned to command them. Not only that, but he is God's last gift to the Damned, leaving the possibility of salvation open. He waits in Heaven, ready to redeem repentant demons and purify the damned of their sins, so that they may climb Jacobs Ladder and join God in the Upper Heavens. As for angels who chose to remain, such as the Outcast and the Orphaned, they've found that they can no longer ascend to Heaven. When they try instead find themselves in the Ethereal portion of Bladine's Tower. Those who haven't signed up with The Enlightened also find themselves appearing there when they're corporeally slain, save for those who are Outcast, who find themselves in Limbo as usual. I know these things always benefit from having time spent on them, but when an idea demands to be written down, there's nothing for it but to concur. ______________________________________________________________ PETER, ARCHSAINT OF APOSTLES In the following descriptions, the word "apostles" refers to all Saints and Soldiers in the service of Heaven. I'm not trying to add a new word to IN jargon (though it would be nice), it's just a lot easier to write. Choir Attunements- Peter did not originally have angelic servitors of his own. As his power and reputation have grown, however, the Word of Apostles has developed quite a force to back it. Though Peter does posses angels of every choir, they are still outnumbered by the Apostles in his service. Peter's angels serve as Sergeants, directing the efforts of his human forces, and ensuring that they are well treated by the higher ranks. Seraphim - Though more at home with humans than other Seraphim, Peter's Most Holy still have difficulty forming personal relationships with Apostles, and are the most feared of his servants. At a glance, they can tell when an Apostle has betrayed Heaven, or has had dealings with the other side. Cherubim - Attuning oneself to an Apostle does not count against a Cherub of Peter's total number of attunements Ofanim - WIth a succesful resonace roll, they may determine the location of all Apostles within (Corporeal Forces x 10) miles. With a CD of 6, they can also tell which Word each Apostle serves. Elohim - With a glance, Elohim of Peter may sense any concerns or feelings an apostle may have about the current situation or mission. Malakim - With a touch, a Malakite may double an apostle's Strength, Intelligence or Will for a number of hours equal to the angel's Celestial Forces. This power can be used once a day for free, or more times for the cost of 1 essence per use. Kyriotates - May automatically possess a willing apostle, and have full access to his knowledges, skills and memories. Mercurians - Resonance automatically succeeds towards apostles, with a CD equal to the angel's Celestial Forces. Apostles - In keeping with his words, Peter grants the apostles working directly for him with a unique attunement. For the cost of 6 essence, an Apostle of Apostles may instantly invoke Peter, without any need for a roll. The First Pope's mood will depend upon the situation to which he has been called, but he will usually grant one boon, provided it is within his power to grant. The power of this attunement explains why so many apostles wish to serve Peter - and why he is so careful to chooses servants who won't abuse the power. This attunement is a weapon to use as a last-resort - any apostle who starts relying on it will have some awkward questions to answer. Dissonance - It is dissonant for Angelic Servitors of Apostles to treat humans (and Saints) as purely the means to an end. This does not mean that humans won't be used as tools: but rather that they won't be put in unnecessary danger, that they will be made aware of the risks before they're sent in, and that they wll be treated as part of the team, rather than just another tool. In return, Apostles are expected to remain loyal and serve heaven. Humans who are discovered to have been working with the other side are dealt with swiftly and brutally. This is a War, after all - the troops need to be treated well, but betrayal can't be tolerated. Attunements - Apostolic Authority - Peter is the First Pope, the source of Catholic authority, and he may imbue his servitors with a little of that power. For the cost of 2 essence, an angel with this attunement may persuade anyone who thinks of themselves as a Catholic to do anything which is not directly against the teachings of the Church. (This attunement would require GM control to stop it being too silly - it's supposed to be a way to make Catholic security gaurds let you into restricted areas, and Catholic cops overlook a speeding ticket. It's not a way to turn Catholics into puppets). Steady! - An angel with this attunement may fortify the minds and spirits of a number of humans upto (Celestial Forces x 2), rendering them calm and immune to fear for as long as they remain within ten feet of each other. Distinctions - Vassal of Soldiers - This angel is always aware of the location and condition of any apostles in his service. Friend of the Servants - With a successful resonance roll, this angel is able to persuade a human to serve heaven for a number of days equal to the angel's Corporeal Forces. Master of the Rank and File - An angel of this rank may, with a successful Resonance roll, make an angel of an equal or lesser rank (anyone other than a Superior) understand the plight and concerns of human in their service. Relationships- No-one in Heaven really dislikes Peter - he's given them two millenia of good service, after all. But some of them can't help but think of him as an inferior - and they don't like being told how to manage their troops. Blandine - "He doesn't really bother himself with the Marches overly - but he does tell me how to look after my Dream Soldiers, which isn't really his concern. He also doesn't realise how often people dream about him." Dominic - "He serves his purpose well, and ensures that his charges are treated justly. But I remember the cockcrow. He betrayed us three times out of fear - he could do it again". Eli - "Peter? I remember him back in the day. He was uptight even then; never knew when to stop preaching and play with the children. But he was a good guy. Waitress! Two more coffees over here!" Jordi - "He fights for the good treatment of humans. Why should I care? I wish him no harm, but when his children harm mine, he wll not stop me from delivering punishment". Laurence - "He is the source of Apostolic Authority - the Rock upon which the holy mother Church is built. We are honoured to have him amongst us". Novalis - "He's a good guy, but he's got to lighten up. I agree that some of the others treat people terribly, but running around like Karl Marx with a pole up his ass isn't going to help matters, you dig?" Michael - "In war, a general's got to take care of his troops. Some of the others think you can pour men at a problem until it goes away. He understands the rules of war better than a lot of them, and he's a good influence on Laurence. He's not always much of a strategist, mind, but there's no-one else I'd rather have keeping the troops in check - perfect NCO material." David - "His men are well disciplined, but they should rely less on him to take care of them" Jean - "Sorry, what was that you were saying". Gabriel - "Once a betrayer, always a betrayer. And no-one tells me how to manage my servants". Marc - "Keep the workers happy - it's one of the main rules of business. Heaven couldn't ask for a better union leader, but he needs to think more about the responsibilities of a Manager." Janus - "I couldn't care less about Peter, as long as he doesn't presume to manage my servants for me." Yves - "Sometimes, its takes a long time for destiny to make itself evident. From humble beginnings, and all that." As more human servants become dissatisfied with the risks their Celestial masters are willing to take on their behalf, Peter's word grows, but he'll need to learn how not to anger his fellow superiors if he doesn't want to turn heaven against him. And Dominic's got a long memory..... - -- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Sep 2001 16:33:32 -0400 From: "Eric Bertish" Subject: Re: IN> A Question of Legality Brilliant stuff as always, Em. Heavenly Judgement isn't quite that nasty (but it's close), and it costs 7. ===== Michael Walton, #9805-068 The next time someones says "Talk is cheap," remind them of how much Oprah Winfrey makes. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? This is a definite plus to a campaign. The Blandine interpretation seemed odd to me. She seems more likely to want help in making sure her people are treated better, after all dreams come from humanity, but that is just my interpretation. I have a question, and I don't have Heaven and Hell to answer it. I should explain. My very first IN character, still active, is a Seraph of Flowers who has a role as a high-level political aide to a prominent Senator in the U.S. Congress. Now, I'm not sure, but does the Game control politics or influence it? I think I recall the Game having connotations with corrupt politicans, but I might have been mistaken or misunderstood. I ask because I want to try to involve my innocent Seraph (just reassigned in the midst of her first-ever Earth assignment) more in the political sphere due to her role, and I'm not sure just how much influence demons have in politics. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I admit that I wasn't really sure how Blandine, Janus and Jean would feel towards Peter, which is why their parts are fairly basic. The impression I get from canon, though, is that Blandine likes to handle her own affairs. She may well agree with Peter's mission, but I can't see her looking favourably at him poking around in her business.
