They have incorporated the truce into the campaign very well, with some significant changes. The most important one is that the Malakim DO know about the truce and accept it as orders from above -- they just don't like it. They have also made the treaty an individual thing; each angel or demon residing in the city must sign the treaty or not be eligible for the protections that it grants (any angel not signing the treaty can be attacked by demons with impunity, and vice versa). Malakim _must_ sign the treaty or the demons won't accept them. Each side maintains a sort of "mutually assured destruction" stance -- when the demons get out of line, Heaven threatens to bring in a lot of Malakim. When the angels get too rowdy, Hell casually mentions how many Calabim of Fire there are. The concept works, if only because of the politics and intrigue that result. ===== Michael Walton, #9805-068 The next time someones says "Talk is cheap," remind them of how much Oprah Winfrey makes. __________________________________________________ Terrorist Attacks on U.S. - How can you help? I really do not think this is a big issue. It represents a learning curve where 6-8 is a sort of common average level of ability. No celestial is ever going to start with all skills at this level. There still has to be some decisions made about what skils the celestial will take. Sure it is less focussed on three mubers if you move to 3D6, but I happen to like the dice convention in IN Nomine. If I wanted accuracy with dice I would look elsewhere, but ultimately my opinion is that dice sould be used to a minimum, and any dice convention should be simple and fast. There is always going to be a pay off between realism and speed. The problem is that it is hard to get a human to be competent in virtually anything without breaking the rules as they stand. The trick may be to increase the range of skills and then not restrict to 4x forces. If all beings started with 9x4 points to spend, ie 36 (same as for a nine force celestial) humans would start to have a skill edge since humans do not need to bother with attunements, vessel, role etc. Oh and soldiers get to pick one thing for free just as celestials get one Attunement for free. >One idea I've toyed with is having the celestials inserted into human bodies >(as they are in the French game) and have them start off with all those >human's memories, and at first having to "realize/remember" who they >really are, kind of like Changeling, it occurs to me. Problem is that everything becomes a pseudo Shedite or Kiriotate. This is not the route I would want to go. Possession is not nice, the humans trapped inside become victims. I was thinking more along the lines of souls. A soul goes to Heaven or Hell. The soul can be returned to the corporeal in a vessel as a recently fledged Angel or Demon. It would be a pretty rare occurrance one in how many millions of deaths. It gives the Angel or Demon a grounding in human society and a past belief system. The Angel or Demon is still in part human and still has human motivations (and retains some skills and knowledge). At the same time it is stuck with a vessel (usually) and all the conditions for dissonance and discord. Mortal souls can also be used to create imps and releivers and the vast majority either in Heaven or Hell continue to serve in the production of essence. Personally I think this concept has immense potential. Thoughts???? Ashley. What I usually do (with NPCs -- I think you'd have to moderate this for PCs, maybe giving them less skill points) is give them a free role/6 in whatever their job is. ie. A mortal gets a base skill of 6 in anything related to their job ("role") for free, to which you add whatever the PC/NPC has actually spent extra points in. jo _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 12:28:42 -0400 From: "Eric Bertish" Subject: Re: IN> Iron Rev 4 Closed! >I had posted a message to the list about needing a couple of days to finish >my submission... I should also mention that I too actively like the mechanics of IN, and don't see IN as a game for humans, particularly, compared with Celestials. If I wanted a more humanocentric game, I'd use GURPS IN. I can believe (especially given Perry's passionate advocacy) that INS/MV is a good system mechanically. Like most people, he'd always found it somewhat relaxing to spend a few moments marvelling at the monuments to financial prosperity that rose like outstretched hands towards the Heavens. And like so many other people, when he looked at the gap in the city's landscape, he couldn't find that small amount of comfort that had been there a few days before. As Marc sat there watching the skies of New York, another person walked past the assembled onlookers and rescue teams to find his way to that same bench. Without looking up, Marc motioned him to take the seat beside him. "Hello, Laurence. What can I do for you?" The young man cocked his head for a moment before speaking, "Actually, I came to ask the same thing of you. I... all of us heard about what happened here. I know that you had a Tether in the building, and I..." Marc turned to face the General of the Host with a half smile. "Wanted to know when the retaliatory responses would be taking place? So that you could send some of your people to join us? Was that what you were planning on saying?" Turning his head to look at the skyline, "Something like that. I had heard from some of my sources that your intelligence agents were hot on the trails of those responsible. I had thought to send an operations team to act in a supporting role when your Malakites reach their targets, and -" The smile on Marc's face vanished as he looked downward. "I've called them back." Laurence rose up a little straighter in his seat. "You did what?" "I've called them back. There's nothing they or I can do now. All the people who performed these attacks were human. I can't sanction an attack on them, regardless of the damage they've caused to my people and to the city as a whole." Laurence's paused for a moment, "Then we shall track down the diabolicals responsible for this atrocity and make them..." Marc shook his head. "That's what took so long. There weren't any demons involved in this. I'd thought that there might be one or two somewhere way down the line, but my people traced everything back thoroughly. If there are any celestials involved, they have every scrap of paperwork and every shred of evidence in place to back them up. I've checked a few of the noteworthies out personally, and I've found no evidence of the Horde's influence." The Archangel of the Sword seemed to absorb this for a moment. "Soldiers must havebeen involved, then. This would be a perfect job for hellsworn..." He watched as Marc slowly shook his head, then spoke again with an edge of irritation in his voice, "Well, who did this then? Somebody had to be responsible for this - the coordination, the planning, the precision all speaks for itself. The Horde must have profitted from this somehow, Marc." Marc rose up from his seat slowly and started pacing. "Oh, they did. But it doesn't look like any of them directly set it in motion. Even if..." Marc paused for a moment, then continued. "Even if we assume that Hell profitted, who do we blame? Malphas for the fact that the Middle Eastern cultures distrust the United States? Belial for the fact that the fires on the upper floors are probably caused the buildings to collapse? Saminga for the fact that thousands of people died? For that matter, we could blame Khalid for the perpetrators being Moslem, or Eli for not making better building materials!" Laurence stood up and reached out for the Archangel of Trade. "Marc..." Marc shook his hand off. "I'm fine... I'm... I wish that there was someone in Hell to lash out at. But there isn't. They did this all on their own, and I can't do anything about it. I can slowly leak my information to the authorities, and I can hinder their efforts to flee mortal judgment, but beyond that..." He paused to collect himself for a moment. "Beyond that, I can't do anything to them. What little we can do is being done already." Laurence took a step back, and then looked at the Mercurian with a sypathetic eye. "I know you wish you could do more, Marc. And I know that holding yourself back in a case like this hurts. Is there anything that the Sword can do to help you and yours?" Marc looked back towards the site of the disaster. "Do what we always do - worry about our problems later, and try to help them rebuild as best they can. It's the best way to get the Word of Trade flowing the way it used to, and I think it's also the only way we can salvage a victory for Heaven out of this. This place will never be a financial center again, but it can be a place where people come together in the face of adversity. Talk to David about it - I'm sure he'll have some thoughts about it." Laurence nodded. "I'll do that. I'll see you in Council later, then. Take care of yourself." As the sound of the Archangel of the Sword leaving the corporeal plane slowly faded, Marc heard footsteps behind him. He closed his eyes as he smelled the scent of perfume and felt a feminine hand on his shoulder. He slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out a small gold ring, which he then put onto his ring finger. "Do me a favor, my dear. Don't ask. Maybe in a few days, or in a few weeks. But not now." There was a moment of silence before the ring glowed for a moment and then disappeared. The hand on his shoulder squeezed reassuringly for a moment, and then both it and the scent of perfume faded away, leaving only the Archangel of Trade to watch the skyline of New York City. The Trade Center was gone, but his Word sung ever more clearly in his ears. Thousands of lives had been traded for something that had yet to be clearly defined, and he'd be damned if that investment didn't net returns that were worth it. A few years back, Vapula was inadvertently slipped a few role-playing games along with his daily technical journals. Everything probably would have been fine, had someone not realized the mistake and tried to remove the games from the large stack of unread magazines inside Lab 1. After a few blind runs with cybernetics enhancements and genetic modifications, he finally stumbled onto an idea which caught his attention. The very idea of an orbital platform from which to insert Shedim into the minds of the masses had never even been contemplated, as the typical Shedite can only possess someone within a few yards of his current location, and knows better. Vapula, however, is not a Shedite. After several dozen costly failures with little to no results, Vapula finally came up with a solution, which fits perfectly with the ideas of the original game designers. Unlike many other Vaputech devices, the name actually fits, and it actually does what it says it does. Sort of. The Orbital Mind Control Laser isn't actually a laser, but a background signal which piggybacks on the radio signals sent to cellular phones or pagers. When a target is identified by the satellite's controller, coordinates are sent up to the satellite and its resident Shedim, who are waiting in modified computer systems with their Shedim of Technology attunements. Once the target has been locked onto, a highly charged Song of Possession is used to inject one of the waiting Shedim into either the target, or the closest cell phone, pager or palmtop available. Naturally, as the song is transmitted over radio waves, the targetted area is not very small. While it is quite likely that the Shedite will find its target, the disturbance of the song will be heard _quite_ clearly and loudly for an area equal to the Shedite's forces in miles. The echoes of this will persist as though a 100 pt disturbance was caused, although they will not directly pinpoint the possessed person or object, only putting the target within 100 yrds of the center of disturbance. Since this is quite prohibitive in terms of Essence, Vapula does not authorize its use often, but clearance for its use can be acquired relatively easily by emailing a request to the project's director. In a properly ironic twist of fate, the project director just happens to be the newly recruited Impudite who tried to remove the gaming supplies. One can only guess who he worked for... Jordi: Grrr I dislike this change to Urie....hehehehe that's the right spot. Thank you. Hehehehehe. Purrrrrrr "*scratch* *scratch* *rub* *rub* *rub* What a nice animal. I think personally it should be one of Heaven's goals to make humanity vegetarians. I'll ask jean to work on some meat trees." Khalid: Logically it goes that Uriel is merely testing my faith in Islam with his female vessel, his words of nonviolence, his practice of the heinous art of sorcery, and his offering of concessions to the soulless ethereals. What? "Poor Poor slightly chauvenistic Khalid. Sometimes you have to look under the cover to see the true beauty inside. The same goes for religeons." Laurence: Most righteous Lord having returned from communion with the holiest of holies to bring no doubt great glory and wisdom......your really starting to creep me out. "*taps Laurence's nose with wand* All will become clear in time. In the meantime why not go talk to Blandine." Litheroy: At last we shall have the secret truth of all the universe! Tell us Uriel what is the words of the DIvine to his lesser servants? "Behave yourself." Marc: Well she's too young of a girl to think in THAT way and she's focused like David on a non-economic system. Frankly if she wasn't so nausatingly sweet I'd say I didn't like her. "Everyone should share. Money doesn't exist in Oz....errr I mean the Higher Heavens and that should clue." Michael: *shrugs* Stick me away from my fellow angels with god and a bunch of mortals only for a thousand and more years and see how *I'D* change. "Michael knows as well as any violence isn't the answer but it hasn't sunk in that it isn't a viable past time either." Novalis: Oooooo Uriel has really changed for the better! We talk about clothes, mortal trends, play blinds man's bluff, and my parties haven't been the same since she joined us! They've been better! There's hope for everyone it seems. "Novalis understands the value and price of peace. I like that." Yves: Uriel has changed how I foresaw. *Opens his copy of The Road to Oz* "The reverse of the Wizard, a omnipotent and powerful magician behind a slightly funny old man." Zadkiel: I really like Ozma she's very different from Uriel and very interested in protection. "She needs a basket and a little dog to be perfect but otherwise Zadkiel is one of my favorite angels in Heaven." Saints: What can be said of those humans who have given up the most supreme holy union of the universe in order to return to the Earth to continue the good they did in life. I admire their courage even if I occasionally question thier logic. Soldiers: Humans are all soldiers in their own way with a day to day battle against evil being waged in their souls. Each is no more important than the other but I am proud of those who acknowledge their master openly. Sorcerers (Divine): I make use of magic as a tool for enforcing the best possible outcome for all parties concerned and certain people like my servitors can be trusted with the awesome duty and responsibilities of such power. - -Charlemagne _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 17:03:20 -0400 From: "Jeffery Watkins" Subject: Re: IN> Even In the City of Light, Shadows MUST Fall. Great concept, but very creepy. While I like the idea of Grigori fledging, the shadow of heaven just is too diabolical or just plain dark to sit well me. But like all things, its open to each person's interpretation. Make it a recurring feature in Pyramid. Like the Greyhawk updates Gary Gygax did for Dragon Magazine a million and a half years ago. (Those were quite nice, by the way.) That gives you a built-in way to 'sell' an ongoing series of PDF updates. I was going to suggest we could use the IN equivalent of the JTAS, but I suppose that's far, far too hopeful. Just an idea. What other articles are you going to suggest get removed when it appears? (Assuming that the columnist gets _paid_, the budget will come from somewhere...) Would it make a good enough rating for Steven to want to keep it? (No, I don't think we can get Ken Hite to do it all the time. Darn it.) _Could_ it be written well enough -- or turned into a "The News in Re-View" for enough different systems -- to entertain even those who aren't IN-players? If so, who gets tapped as the author, to be that skilled? (These are not rhetorical to shoot down the suggestion. They're questions that would have to be answered before I went to Steven with the idea.) - --emccoy@nh.ultranet.com // arcangel@io.com In Nomine Line Editor RPG links; Random name list, Art: http://www.io.com/~arcangel/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2001 14:32:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Walton Subject: Re: IN> Even In the City of Light, Shadows MUST Fall. ===== Michael Walton, #9805-068 The next time someones says "Talk is cheap," remind them of how much Oprah Winfrey makes. __________________________________________________ Terrorist Attacks on U.S. - How can you help?
