Describing what they face is a nice follow on to the "When I grow up" series; (besides I've already started with my GuildHall write-up) so I'll play with that as my next project. That is a big project. A very big project. Is it? Really? Only three of the existing Major Archangels gained their positions after the Fall - Laurence, Marc & Novalis. And Marc & Novalis were already WordBound. Only five of the major Demon Princes were not around during the Fall - Haagenti, Kronos, Nybbas, Valefor & Vapula. Shifts in power have generally been dramatic, so these flux points can be focused on. They are: - - the Fall/ attempt for a negotiated settlement. Novalis and Marc trying to negotiate with the first demons, with no-one sure of what they could do, would be a strange setting. - - Hell's break-out. The promotion of Lilith; creation/Outcasting of the Grigori. - - The deaths of Oannes & Vephar. This is the first shift in Hell's organisation, as Asmodeus & Baal use Vephars' death as an excuse to increase their personal power; and is the point at which Gebbteleth disappears & Saminga is promoted. - - The Roman Empire. Purity versus Corruption. Mammon & Zadkiel promoted. Uriel's recall is matched by Laurence & Khalid being promoted. - - the Middle Ages: Valefor replaces Genubath; Kronos appears; haagenti proves himself in the battle against Legion, where Raphael dies. The Promotion of Christopher & Makatiel marks the end of this era. - - The start of the Modern Age; Vapula, Alaemon, Fluerity & Nybbas are all promoted within a hundred years or so of each other. Each of those would require a book. Is there the market? probably not. Would tey make excellent netbooks? Almost certainly. It won't be that long before Tattered is complete; which period would people like to focus on as the next great project? :-) James ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 21:55:21 -0400 From: "Charles Phipps" Subject: IN> Baal's up and comming servitor Ooops forgot this section Cor-4 Str-8 Agi-8 Eth-3 Int-6 Pre-6 Cel-2 Will-4 Per-4 - -Charlemagne _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 19:00:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Maurice Lane Subject: IN> Drowning under catchup work... Remember, this is the amateur version. ;^) - -------------------- Khalid received unexpected help from Novalis in the struggle with the briefly-empowered Malphas in Israeli-Palestinian politics this week; while Novaline Servitors were sighted in the region, Novalis insists the events were "catalyzed culmination" of longer-term projects. Indeed, if Flowerchildren were directed to aid Servitors of Faith, the aid was not overt. (http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/19/international/middleeast/19ISRA.html) The Angel of Plumbing (lit. "Artificial Direction of Water Among Habitations," formerly of Water, now of Stone under Cities) has joined the team of workers examining flooding possibilities under New York in a low-profile capacity. While primary work is shoring and support and is already amply supplied, he may also request a small team to investigate reports of demons attempting to manufacture "accidental" cave-ins among the tunnels and sewers below Ground Zero. (http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/18/science/physical/18UNDE.html) Dominic has issued a request in Council that other Archangels refrain from attempting to place Servitors in the newly-created American "Office of Homeland Security." While the placement of Servitors in an agency designed to oversee numerous other agencies during times of national attack is tempting, the claim is that extreme background checks and political-legal roadblocks make the job best suited for Dominicans. Asmodeus has not bothered to make a similar decree for demons, but his opinion is remarkably well-broadcast. It is uncertain whether other Superiors will agree; certainly the task of keeping the Other Side from getting in is a popular task in the area at the moment. Les Temoins are gearing up for activity in East Timor as that nation enters the process of writing its Constitution. Davidians (especially Kyriotates and Mercurians) are requested, as well as Dominicans, but many of these are understandably overworked at the moment. Other angels may be requested on a case-by-case basis to deal especially with demonic attempts to pervert the process. (http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/18/international/asia/18DILI.html) Kobalites may be involved in the spreading of false rumors that agents in direct service to Lilith (promoting civil liberties and the lightest possible domestic security measures) are engaged in ideological combat with agents of Beleth (attempting to increase paranoia, push for maximum lockdown, and encourage Arab-bashing), given the American president's recent blunt statement on national TV that "Freedom and fear are at war." On the other hand, the rumors may be true. The question is, how much credence should be given, how much effort should be spent investigating, and what (if anything) should be done if the rumors are found to be true? Valefor, who had not been reliably reported in at least two weeks, is making his presence known again. While looters in the WTC are probably human, a Malakite of Fire in the American Southwest reports probable Magpie involvement in politically-charged massive redirection of reservoir water from drought-stricken towns, being characterized as "theft" by many locals. (http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/18/national/18WATE.html) A similar archaeological theft (http://www.reuters.com/news_article.jhtml?type=humannews&StoryID=215139) may also be Valeforian, as the goods have no sale value but are irreplaceable. Fleurity, anticipating a possible minor Tether from the planned activity of a mental institution's staff to sedate the patient population in order to hold a rave(this really happened, apparently, but I can't find a URL -- it was reported in our local "Weekender") had his hopes dashed -- investigations report that Chimera may have been supplied, its use tampering with the fabric of corporeal reality. Whether Chimera exists or not, Fleurity is certainly searching for the party's supplier -- Asmodeus is doing so as well, on the off chance that the act was deliberate sabotage prior to going Renegade rather than "mere" incompetence. - -- Eli Watch: While agents from both Sides were assigned to the "Tribute to Heroes" event in the hopes of locating Eli among the crowd, the Archangel of Creation instead may have been spotted by a Servitor of War in Afghanistan. If the report is verified, Eli was moving among Afghani craftsmen, particularly those who practice rare techniques, watching and taking an occasional small hand. Gabriel Watch: Gabriel was spotted this week by an angel of Animals in Australia's outback, an area almost antipodal to New York. She was reportedly in poor condition, weeping incoherently and leaving behind small fires as she traveled across the wilderness. No major damage was done -- the reporting angel and the Firemen controlled such events before any real threat could build. - ---------------- William ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 16:20:29 -0400 From: Daniel Sauve Subject: Re: IN> [INEWS] Bulletin, Sep. 16 - 22 [Radio Free Heaven, broadcasting live from the Halls Progress Broadcasting Bureau. That seems to make less sense for In Nomine, unless one is talking about a specific series of events -- the destruction of Demogorgon and Beelzebub, the Purity Crusades-- which overlap the historical Dark Ages. A hypothetical medeival IN supplement, focusing on the period between, say, the destruction of Beelzebub to the hunt for Makatiel-- which gives us Jean as an elemental force, Eli as a member of the host, the Raphael, Uriel, Mariel, Sloth, Beelzebub, and Demogorgon writeups, Haagenti when he was Scary, the purity Crusades, campaign advice for retro games, and one-stop-shopping for ALL your Legion needs (which seems plenty enough for a single supplement without even touching on Mortal history)-- really ought to have a title more indicative of the religious (or, rather, pseudo- religious) themes of the In Nomine game line, rather than 'Dark Ages', which is far more appropriate to Vampire. Might I suggest 'In Nomine: Millennium'? -ALD ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2001 01:05:58 +0100 From: Omentide Subject: Re: IN> Re:In Dark Ages. > >A timeline from creation until now. Personaly I would do this differently. In Nomine is ultimately about the battle for souls, the war will be won or lost this way. Essence is the key. So I would highlight major shifts in human history as much as shifts in Celestial events. An example would the 'The Birth of Reason'. A treatise from the rise of Islam through to the Renaissance. The growth of mathematics, empiricism etc, the spreading of ideas across cultures, how these clashed with religious ideas. The rise and decile of the Moors, the expulsions from Spain and Portugal (Moors and Jews), Columbus, Torquemada (and the inquisition), the Angevin Popes, Dante.... The Holy Roman Empire, the Ottomans, the fall of Constantinople, the discovery of the Americas. And how all of this connected with the powers that be in Heaven and Hell and how the powers rose of declined as a result. An earlier work on the same model could cover Rome, Greece, Egypt etc from the time of Moses to the establishment of Christianity as a dominant force in Europe. Ashley. Yes this is another valid route to deal with the problems within In Nomine. Many of us on this list have come up with good solutions to the varied mechanical problems, and perceived problems where system may clash with personal game style. Some are addresed in various books, not least how to deal with the obvious limitations of humans (and soldiers etc). From my POV we should not need to be doing this, but given that we are, for any future revised version of In Nomine (assuming this ever happens) these issues should be addressed and fixed. The real issue is in identifying where the fixes are needed in both concept and mechanics and then agreeing what the fixes should be. A reprint of the core book without addressing the problems is not going to solve a great deal and is not going to breathe new life into the game. Ashley. In truth Joriel has been involved in the Catholic church far longer than his current role and trained "himself" in previous roles running. Joriel has the unfortunate distinction of being possibly the one person Laurence would like to see less of in the Catholic Church. The Seraph of Fire was charged with centuries ago in deterring false miracles from being propagated and false saints being elevated by mortals above God. The Seraph who had a long history of such endeavors (he had been with a REAL prophet named Isaiah whom he put a burning coal in the mouth of). Since that time he has mercilessly attacked every miracle he percieves as fraudulent and does his best to publicize his finding. Laurence has little problem with the destruction of false miracles but since he percieves everything as a manifestation of God he is more than alittle uncomfortable with the vehemence that Joriel pursues his mission. Worse Laurence is occasionally uncomfortable with the fact that Joriel is a seraph and when events actually are otherwise than normal (usually due to a sloppy servitor's handiwork) Joriel is perfectly willing to say in his report what he thinks. The Catholic Church should know after all says Joriel. This has led to the opinion that Father Darian is slightly dotty in his old age in the heirarchie's opinion. Furthermore the Catholic Church has always been a favorite target of diabolicals and false miracles on occasion have proven to be the work of the most hypocritical of all cruel beings-demons. Father Darian is no slouch in combat which occasionally surprises those who encounter the dotty old man but worse for demons who have aims of subverting Catholicism is that Father Darian thanks to his ties at the church has a VERY LONG line of people to call on for aid. If a false miracle is proven the product of evil doers then Father Darian is fully content to give the people a miracle....by making sure that everyone responsible dissapears. - -Charlemagne _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2001 11:28:51 +1100 From: "james walker" Subject: IN> When I grow up, I want to be....Part XIII When I grow up, I want to be a Kyriotate... ....and a Malakite, and a Mercurian, and an Elohite, and a - oh well, if it can be only one... While other Relievers are being coming increasing focused, developing specific skills and honing their nature to a known goal, others dabble. There are so many options, possibilities; so much to explore. Given that the reliever has centuries to dabble, to learn in, this isn't a problem; many will search until they find what they need and then focus, becoming productive members of other choirs. Others focus on dabbling, on learning to learn. Over the centuries these dilettantes grow increasingly more skilled until even they realise that they should fledge as Kyriotates. A reliever in Heaven will never see a Kyriotates' ability to possess creatures. What they will see in Kyriotate carrying on a conversation with himself, or singing in harmony with himself. He'll watch as new Kyriotates develop quirky habits, becoming increasingly eccentric, as the Kyriotate acquires the distinctive personality which will protect his identity when body hopping. The reliever is unlikely to feel any real connection with the Kyriotate - he's too alien - but fascination will be common, a fascination which will make this option for fledging more tempting. Unless the reliever is already in service to a Superior, choosing a Word to serve could be tricky. Inclined to sample everything, serving a single Word will go against lifelong habits. Fortunately, the proto-Kyriotate has a couple of options - firstly, choosing a Word which works closely with the others (eg The Sword or Destiny) or of choosing a Superior on a whim, making their dedication to their Superior a personality quirk. Sooner or later, the Dominion WILL choose, if only because they want to sample everything, and this is the only way they can sample the focused existence which the other choirs take for granted.
