IN> Re: Horror Month Location - The Hall of Screams ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2001 02:14:11 -0400 From: "Charles Phipps" Subject: IN> In WoD: The Hunters part 2 OCC: thanks for the comments and quite true possibly Physiology Hunters as I have stated are very little different from normal soldiers awakened to the service of Heaven save for the fact that they recieve a very specific and universal attunement called "The Sight" by the Imbued. This attunement is fairly powerful that it bears close scrutiny for the expenditure of merely a day or rite's worth of essence a Imbued can for an hour or so be able to tell the true nature of anyone's spirit seperate from his vessel. Given Hunter's penchants to go "scanning" combined with a little intelligence and investigative speculation this attunement can be devastating. Hunters also are aware of a variety of corporeal songs that seem to be taught depending on the creed they choose including the ability to empower any object in their possesion with celestial fire as the most common to the power to inflict discord on individuals of various types...indeed powerful. However these require massive amounts of essence to use in any appreciable ammount and the Hunters are equipped with a wide variety of rites related to their creed that in order to sustain their powers they must regularly hunt the supernatural and destroy it. It's no wonder so many minds break when in order to feel secure one must enter danger. Also in a most disturbing facet yet the majority of Hunters who DO prove sucessful seem to be inflicted with Obsessive discords to the point that they are arguably no longer human in mindset but approaching our own focus....something the Lord never intended I'm sure Most Holy. These hunters are among those I feel must be stopped most lest they turn the Earth into an abbatoir trying to do our job for us...helpless before the insanity inflicted upon us. Otherwise the Hunters are completely normal humans and die sadly all too easily like them but they are growing increasingly well armed as those with crimminal, police, military, and government connections ally to give themselves too lethal hardware. Hell and Heaven connections My initial suspcions were that this might have been the work of the Tsaydim milord but the Hunters (Coincidence?) while displaying many similar attributes to the Imbued, most especially mindset do not have the power to enforce this kind of change. There is the possibility that somewhere in the Marches they came across a type of power that did allow them to make such a change however...however faint. It is also possible Milord that the Master of the Tsaydim has returned. This of course is highly unlikely as it is practically impossible to believe the Former Commander of the Host would make such a senseless waste of untrained lives and not to mention the fact he has not made himself known to us. Still I mention him because of the power level required certainly fits the Archangel of Purity as did the mindset immediately prior to his dissapearence. While the current and former Commanders of the Host have expressed desire on occasion to commit genocide upon certain supernatural races and redeem a select few (while the Hunters are for the most part bloodthirsty a select few do seem to seek redemption and healing for the superantural and most are only bloodthirsty for the guilty) the profile is difficult to believe because of the seeming randomness of it all. The Archangel Khalid is a possible suspect as well due to the fact just prior to his madness he was known to promote faith in anything due to his crisis (including Santa Clause) though his since rejoining with Heaven and tempering of his fanaticism makes it unlikely he'd suddenly make such a move. Still few things spark a religeous revival like a Jihad and what better way to do it world-wide than by revealing the monsters to all walks of life? Still I find it unlikely which leads me to my three main suspects. The Archangel Eli has claimed to be working on "something big" for a great deal of time and his movement all across the world in brief intervals across every class line is perfect that each one of the Imbued was "marked" before their encounters. This something big might well be Eli's attempt to transform humanity into an abbatoir that can take care of itself and thus take it's own destiny. If this is the case then an immediate trial and subsequent sentencing is in order. The Archangel Gabriel is the next candidate and one that I personally favor due to the fact that the "enlightment" of the Imbued fits well with her punishment of the cruel and her prophetic nature along with it's complete randoness. If this is indeed the case a second and finishing trial needs to be done Milord I am certain. She has gone from living in her own insanity to spreading it to those who can least defend against it. The Third Candidate is actually a host of Candidates and ones whose names I suspect you have not heard in a long time for my reports. The Grigori as a whole. The Hunters mission is to eradicate the supernatural in such a way that it is almost identical to the former position of the Watchers. It may be that the Hunters themselves are in fact all descendants of the Grigori children and that is their common bond. The Watchers may in fact believe that resuming this "warding" will somehow compell you to recend their charges of neglecting their duties. I leave the judgement of what to make of THAT to you given two Archangels (Song and Azrael) were among their number. I lean against Hell's cullability in this case though originally I thought this might in fact be the work of Kobal much like the Apocolypse scare of recent years which resulted in the destruction of a Demon Prince, an Archangel's rejoining with Heaven, over 1 million deaths, the sl...well you know. I merely quote the statistics milord to remind you that the Demon Prince is not known to have a short attention span when planning his "pranks". Truth be told fewer things could do more damage to Heaven in the long run than the massive loss of faith which might result from Heaven being portrayed as a group sending it's children in the front line to their doom with no regard for innocents. I rule this out mostly because the Hunters are not necessarily immediately deprived of their morals and many are learning to balance their need to destroy with their human morality that some indeed are becomming great enemies of evil instead of losing their minds. In fact there is some evidence to the contrary that this war is indeed leading some to their destinies as much as fate Baal, Saminga, Kronos, Malphas and other Princes with such interest in mortality have little to nothing to gain from aiding mortals in a righteous war on evil and indeed are losing much. Still the identity of the Messangers for this period remains anonymous, I shall continue to report to you on the matter as you desire. In Conclusion The Imbued are a suspicous lot as unfortunately several Demons, Cainites, Ethereals, Garou, Ghosts, Changelings and quite possibly Angels have made contact with them and attempted to convince them that "we're really not all that bad" with the result the Imbued have come to view the situation as much one views a broken record...they hear but ignore. Some success has occured it appears with an alliance of the Fey and Imbued in Los Angeles (the Demon population of that City helping a great deal to make their lives unpleasant) and Garou/Imbued teams in some cases. However several uses of this "pleasant chat" have lead to fatalities and murderous actions that have made the Hunters wary... Heaven cannot simply step in and start training them to be loyal soldiers of God as a whole....especially given we are not sure of who exactly is responsible for the power. Still some sort of action should be done to curb their excesses as I have been at my wits end passing along information to the Michaelites and Jeanites to cover up the Imbued attempts to expose the war. It is however sometimes useful to have contacts with Hell as I made the effort of manipulating Nybassians and rival Gamesters to aid in the suppression which hopefully exposed them to the group of Hunters known as the "Fiery Hand of God's wrath" Heaven's focus I believe should instead of being on the mortals be on the party responsible and I do not have to say that I believe in this case that stripping of an Archangel's rank completely and the soul-destruction of the angels involved as the Messangers is an appropriate penalty for this callous destruction of mortal lives a I'm sure you'll agree. - -Charlemagne _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Oct 2001 23:48:14 -0700 From: Sean McCarthy Subject: Re: IN> (Horror) New Relic Our spies report that on 10:06 PM 10/8/2001 -0700, Maurice Lane said: >There is nothing Bright about this concept. Whoever captures and returns the luststone, will win me!" "Oh, great," Samanthiel the Chrub thought as the teenage boys of all races began chasing after the glowing crystal sphere, "How am I supposed to protect Tommy from *this*?" - --------- With IN Anime coming up, I decided to beat SJG to the punch by adapting In Nomine to my current favorite anime-themed game. And so without further ado, I give you the Teenagers From Outer Space adaptation of In Nomine. (You must own a copy of Teenagers From Outer Space and In Nomine to play.) Celestial TFOS characters are created just like normal TFOS characters. Roll 1d6 nine times, then assign the result of each roll to one of the nine stats. Relationship With Superior (AKA Relationship With Parents) is used to dtermine success in dealing with the archangel or demon prince your character serves, and Driving is used by celestials with wings (or Ofanim) to fly. Celestial TFOS characters also have an Essence statistic, which is rolled after the other nine statistics have been assigned. This represents the character's starting essence, which can go up to 9. Essence is regained both at the normal rate of one point/day, and by performing rites, exactly as in In Nomine. To determine the character's starting Rites, roll 1d6/2, and select them from the rites for your character's superior. Essence can be spent to improve the character's chances of succeeding at a knack roll, but the When Too Much Is Too Much rule of TFOS applies. Celestial TFOS characters roll 2d6 rather than 1d6 to determine the number of points that can be spent on Knacks. Songs are bought as Knacks, and can not be bought at higher than 3 to start with. Celestials do not roll on the Strange Alien Powers Man Was Not Meant To Know table, but instead roll 1d6/2, to determine what angelic or demonic abilities they have in addition to their choir or band resonance. The first of the 1-3 abilities must be the choir or band attunement appropriate to the celestial's superior. There are no vessels in TFOS In Nomine - Celestials only have one form, and their status as Near Humans, Not Very Near Humans, or Real Weirdies depends on their choir or band. As this is not suitable for anything buy a silly game, two of the demon princes' Words had to be changed slightly. Since no TFOS character ever actually manages to sleep with anyone, Andrealphus has become the Prince of Making Out, and the total absence of lethality in TFOS means that Saminga has to become the Prince of Bonk, instead. Trauma: Use the TFOS rules for recovering Bonk damage to simulate Trauma, with the exception of Malakim. Their choir's immunity to Trauma is represented by recovering from negative Bonk twice as fast as normal. Dissonance: Celestials take dissonance as normal. If the celestial gains an amount of dissonance equal or higher than his or her Bonk, the player rolls 1d6, and adds the level of dissonance. The GM rolls 1d6+6. If the GM's roll is higher, the dissonance is converted to discord, at one level of discord for every two points of dissonance. If the player rolls higher, the celestial falls (if an angel,) or redeems (if a demon.) Next up: Choirs and Bands! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2001 16:41:06 -0700 (PDT) From: Maurice Lane Subject: Re: IN> In Nomine Anime In Playtest! - --- Robb Kidd wrote: > Heh. The format they will be presented in is Choir/Band Name*, what type of TFOS alien they equate to, and how their resonance works in TFOS mechanics. Except where otherwise noted, Angelic resonances are based on Smarts, while Demonic resonances are based on Cool. Substitute the amount the celestial beats the target number by for the check digit (with results over 6 putting the celestial at risk of falling afoul of the When Too Much Is Too Much rule.) If no details on a choir or band's resonance is listed, it functions as detailed in In Nomine. *For convenience, Near Human will be abbreviated as NH, Not Very Near Human as NVH, and Real Weirdie as RW. ANGELS: Seraphim NVH A Seraph can roll its resonance to resist a human Fake Out attempt. Cherubim NVH TFOS Cherubim all appear as anthropomorphic winged animals. Ofanim RW Ofanim roll Driving to use their resonance. In addition to being able to detect the fastest route to a location, Ofanim have the Super-Speed power. Elohim NVH Malakim NH While the oath about never surrendering or allowing oneself to be captured by the forces of Lucifer can be left as-is in silly campaigns (and, if the Malakite's player is suitable poker-faced, can give rise to high comedy,) "Never suffer an evil to win when it is my choice" is far more suitable to TFOS Malakim (except, perhaps, among NPC Malakim who refuse to accept the lack of lethality in the game.) The remaining two oaths should likewise be designed as appropriately suited to silly games. Kyriotates RW Kyriotates do not need vessels in TFOSIN, but can possess other beings as per the In Nomine rules, rolling their Cool versus the host's Smarts. Aliens count as 7-force beings for the purposes of possession. If a Kyrio's host is reduced to negative Bonk, the Kyrio takes a point of dissonance. While the sight of a Kyrio does not automatically stun those who see it, the Kyrio can spend a point of essence to attempt to stun those non-celestials who see it, rolling its Looks versus their Cool. Mercurians NH DEMONS: Balseraphs NVH Balseraphs are the only type of Celestial that can use the human Fake Out ability. Djinn NVH TFOS Djinn, like Cherubim, appear as anthropomorphic winged animals. Whether they appear frightening or comical is left to player and GM discretion. Calabim NVH TFOS Calabim start with 1d6 levels of Discord, and roll Body to inflict Bonk with their resonance. Habbalah NVH Habbalah roll Smarts versus their victims' Cool to use their resonance. Lilim NVH Lilim roll Smarts to detect Needs, and Cool versus their victims' Cool to inflict a Geas. Shedim RW A Shedite can still only possess one being at a time, rolling its Looks versus its victim's Cool. Given the silliness of TFOS, the acts a Shedite will inspire its host toward will tend to be more innocuous than in In Nomine, and certain organs are never extruded from its form (and any tentacles are strictly used for holding pencils, thankyouverymuch.) Any attempts to guide its host toward having sex will meet with as little success as any other TFOS character's attempts to do so on their own. Repeated attempts will lead to the Shedite being ejected. The host is allowed to roll its Cool versus the Shedim's Cool once per day to expel the Shedite, and if the host is reduced to negative Bonk, the Shedite is expelled and takes a point of dissonance. Impudites NH Impudites must be created with a minimum Cool of 2. Alice had already guessed and asked to learn how to destroy and torture like Lucky did so she wouldn't have to be afraid anymore. She was starting fairly late by Lucky's standards as she was nearly 14. After five years of running around the Marches Alice has managed to recover and lose her sanity in about equal proportions as goes from Dream to dream indulging in her appetite for slaughtering the horrors within and making sure that she is as terrifying as the people who have tormented her for so many years. A Malakim once wandered into the Starkweather institute and tried to free a patient but Alice took her chainsaw to him. To say she has issues with "happy shiny bunny dreams" that she blames for her being unprepared for the horrofic ammount of abuse that was heaped upon her once her mother died is the understatement of the year and oddly blames Heaven for them more than she does those that she's become used to in the tether....and she's had more practice in her time strange dreams than about a thousand of men and women today. When Philip finally got free he murdered his father and family before going in a murder spree against the sinners that his father told him existed in the world. When finally brought down by police Philip entered a catatonic state where he has remained for the past three years without any sign of recovery but in truth Philip wouldn't have it any other way. Subjected to the extreme mental tortures of the Habbalah assistant Doctor Adrian Carol Philip became aware of the awesome potential power of dreams and eventually turned the tables on the man so like his father by having his creations devour him alive. It was actually several months before the Seneschal figured out what exactly happened and by then Philip had already befriended a great number of the nightmare ethereals who passed along messages to the other patients that were very much like sermons. Sermons to reveal in their terror and the pain they feel rather than rebel against like the preachers told....God's will he realized must be the opposite of what these men advocated....as his nightmares were the only "friends" he had. A cross between a zookeeper and the local spiritual authority Philip is undisputed master over much of the dream-world in the region and despises Heaven for it's policy of persecuting his friends and horrors for their mindless slaves. How the Couple met and fell in love Beleth linked their dreamscapes one night and Philip was shocked by the woman who battled his nightmares with incredible ferocity even as he was driven to greater heights to try and destroy her in his nightmare weaving. Alice on the other hand had never encountered such a brillant master ethereal who commanded such respect and fear from his subjects. Night after night for months the pair did battle with every moment of their victory over the other slapped away from them by circumstance (often aided by the staff he didn't want to lose either subject) or one last card from up the other's sleeve. Finally they ended up in a death lock on each other's throats which transformed into sex....and you can imagine how this pair makes love. Neither is actually aware at this time that the other is anything more than a figment of the other's warped imagination and frankly speaking their relationship is best described as "dynamic". Alice considers Philip the embodiment of the curse hanging over the Asylum and while she believes that men should strengthen themselves by destroying nightmares. Philip believes in allowing them to run wild on human mindsets and Alice to be an embodiment of humanity's capacity to do sin and tempt others to do violence. Both finds more than alittle attractiveness in the other's lifestyle even as the rest of them finds it completely repulsive which leads them to fight all the harder and love more the passionate. This would be all well and good if not for the fact that their little "aggressive courtship" has created literally hundreds of nightmare ethereals that survive beyond the night to be incorporated into Beleth's service. The monsters having also quite a few that have escaped to their nearby towns that will soon be falling completely to Beleth's side of the Marches more or less continually if not stopped... - -Charlemagne P.S. The problem of course again is figuring out how to hook the players in this How Blandine will react to this as well. and how to play this up... I'm considering also having the Seraph of Destiny detect that Alice and Milo's destiny is to fall in love and marry.... Thoughts extremely appreciated as this couple has become dear to my heart...in a very strange way...very quickly _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2001 23:52:30 -0400 From: "William J. Well done. I watch what the list has been putting out with awe, not being very good at horror myself. And Horror Month isn't even half over yet.... No, wait, wrong post. Okay, look. Khalid, Gabriel, Eli, Song, and Death are out of town at the moment. But people have been getting raised Archangel and granted Words. So, if it doesn't take the entire Seraphim Council to do it, what's the minimum? Push this a step further: Could the Peace Faction or the War faction raise a Superior or powerful Word-bound on their own? Would they do such a thing? Why, and what would the repercussions be? Just one more step: what about Khalid, Gabriel, and Eli? Hey, throw in Yves (or maybe he's the only one they really need anyway -- could he do it on his own?). Here we have the ancient and powerful Archangels of Fire and Creation, intimately familiar with inspiration and shaping -- Word-binding and raising to Superior status could just be right up their alley. Khalid might help as well, especially if Yves agreed to it. But what could motivate three (five, if the Watchers took a hand?) Earthbound Archangels to raise a new Word-bound, or even a new Archangel? Or, on the flip side of the coin, perhaps being as Earthbound as they all are could even be *necessary* to the process, if it were the right kind of Word(or the right kind of recipient).... Just a few questions that popped into my mind to fuel the creativity engines out there on the list. :^) William ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2001 20:47:22 +1100 From: "james walker" Subject: IN> Re: Horror Month Location - The Hall of Screams > From: Michael Walton > Subject: Re: IN> Horror Month location: The Hall of Screams > > This is EVIL.
