But you still need to get the paperwork done, so you'd also need Armand-Jean du Plessis, Duke de Richelieu, General Secretary to the Seraphim Council. Does he still count as a Cardinal? or a Duke? since he's probably dead rather than transubstantiated. So, if it doesn't take the entire Seraphim Council to do it, what's the minimum?' - --------------- Survey says.... Doubt and Uncertainty! Seriously, though-- it may have nothing to do with number of superiors-- there's been no mention of Hell doing this. It may be the total number of forces available (making the collection of Seraphs /plus/ multiple Archangels a requirement), it may be number of superiors, it may be a special ability of Yves. It may be a special ability of Yves that requires a sufficiently large force mass behind him. It may even be that God has delegated the power to elevate angels specifically to the body known as the Seraphim Council (with some sort of quorum and procedural rules applying), and even the same group of celestials all getting together in their off hours and deciding to make an Archangel couldn't do it, if they weren't acting in the capacity of the council. Or, you could examine the suspicion regarding Khalid was elected an Archangel after he became a superior, look at the fact that Lucifer can do it with none of the proposed qualifications (including right after The Fall when he probably had less force mass than Michael), look at the fact that Lucifer somehow managed to elevate Lilith, which isn't supposed to be possible at all-- and ask if it's really the will of the Seraphim Council that makes a superior, or if the Council merely acts as gatekeepers for some other object or process that can transform a celestial into a superior (Mmm... I love the smell of MacGuffin in the morning). The demons don't have to be aware of this, because every Demon Prince was elevated either by God or Lucifer, never the Council (yay for democracy) and there'd be Hell to pay if they ever found out. 'course that's an awful lot of Seraphs to keep a secret that size... -ALD ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2001 05:31:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Walton Subject: IN> CFOS You do realize that, if you and I are ever at the same convention, I'm going to make you run this? 0:> ===== Michael Walton, #9805-068 "The surest way to keep a secret is to make people believe they already know the answer." - -- Fremen saying __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? My assumption is that the Council is able to grant Words because it is the highest legitimate authority in the Earthly Heavens, and God recognizes that. It's not like Hell where a single Clestial imposes a Word on the Symphony -- Angelic Words are granted by the consciousness of the Symphony, God. Even though the Council actually grants most of them, the reason they are able to is that God approves. So would a few Archangels be able to grant another Celestial a Word? Only if God approves. Yves would have an edge in this, since he is an aspect of God, but then again all Celestials are in a way aspects of God. Still, Metatron was able to grant Words before his death and he was the most connected to God of any Celestial (assuming he can be called a Celestial). God has been suspected to grant Words withut the approval of the Seraphim Council (Khalid is an example), so Eli -- or, for that mater, a Grigori -- might be able to grant someone a Word, if the Symphony approved. In other words, he wouldn't impose his will on the Symphony like Lucifer, but pray for the Symphony to recognize the need. As a demon, she was made for better things than emptying bedpans and giving sponge baths. She took comfort in the knowledge that her dread lord Saminga only required her to keep up this pretense for a single day. At least she hadn’t had to dispense medications or do anything that would actually heal these pitiful humans. She suppressed a shudder at the thought of gaining Dissonance that way. After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, two Secret Service men came around the corner. They scanned their surroundings looking for potential threats to their charge, then motioned the rest of the party ahead. They naturally expected to see a nurse in a hospital, so the fools had no idea that Virula was dangerous. Seconds later, the target came into view. Senator Hector Reyes was flanked by a third agent on one side and his angelic press secretary on the other. Virula pasted a smile on her face and stepped forward. The bodyguards tried to wave her off, but Reyes himself -- man of the people that he was -- commanded them to let her through. The demon’s smile broadened as her victim signed his own death warrant. “Senator Reyes,” she said, “It’s an honor to have you visiting our hospital. I wish that more of the people who made the laws about health care understood what we do from the inside.” Virula inwardly congratulated herself on that wording; even the most vigilant Seraph would’ve found no falsehood there. “The honor is mine, miss,” he replied, “The men and women who risk their own health to care for the critically ill are greater heroes than politicians like me will ever be.” Reyes extended his hand, which was exactly what Virula was waiting for. She took the proffered hand in her own and called upon her Resonance. Power flowed from her into the doomed man. More pleasantries were uttered, then the bodyguards ushered their charge down the hall. Virula exulted in the completion of her work. Very soon, Hector Reyes’ fame as an AIDS research advocate would pale before his infamy as an AIDS patient. Decani are agents of death by disease. Saminga considers them his masterwork, but he can’t really take credit for them; the first Decani were Fallen members of Novalis’ minor Choir. Even now, Saminga’s Dissonance condition makes it unpleasant for him to foster life by creating new demons -- he prefers to “recruit” from the ranks of Flowers. Saminga jealously guards his special Servitors from poaching by other Princes and swears that he will kill any Decani that leaves his service. The Prince of Death needn’t worry on that score; no other Prince wants these disgusting creatures. Few Decani have the inclination to defect to another Word, and none have had the opportunity so far. Resonance Decani Resonate with disease. If the demon can touch a person who is infected with some form of sickness, a Will roll allows the Decani to absorb the disease and become a carrier thereof (this does not cure the original sufferer). Touching a second person and succeeding on another Will roll lets the demon transmit the disease. The virulence of the illness varies according to the CD of the absorption roll; the demon can absorb any one disease that the subject carries up to the most virulent one allowed by the CD (consult the Decani Check Digit Results chart below). Transmitting a disease requires a CD at least equal to that of the absorption roll. A failed absorption roll robs the demon of the use of its Resonance for a number of minutes equal to the CD of the failed roll. A failed transmission roll inflicts the disease on the demon’s current Vessel for a number of hours equal to the CD! A successful roll with an insufficient CD has no effect. Once a Decani has absorbed a disease, it cannot absorb other diseases until that sickness has been successfully transmitted. Likewise, successfully transmitting an illness drains all disease from the demon’s system; it must absorb another disease before it can infect anyone else. Although this use of Resonance is destructive, it only disturbs the Symphony if and when the victim dies. Decani Check Digit Results 1: a minor ailment (chicken pox, the common cold) 2: a moderate sickness (mild flu, rubella) 3: a disfiguring or debilitating disease (arthritis, lupus) 4: a serious illness (virulent flu, pneumonia; anything that is potentially fatal) 5: a deadly malady (Ebola, polio; anything that is usually fatal) 6: a disease that is incurable or invariably fatal if untreated (AIDS, cancer, leprosy) More Sophisticated Uses of Resonance A Decani may infect Vessels with its Resonance. Any attempt to do so has a penalty of -3 to the CD unless the target is a Servitor of Creation or Flowers; then the penalty is increased to -4. This penalty even applies to Soldiers of those Words. Dissonance These demons must spread disease or become disconnected from their personal Symphonies. A Decani gains a note of Dissonance for every day that it fails to infect someone with disease. This Dissonance disappears if the Decani makes up the difference within one week. Decani who aren’t diligent enough in spreading sickness may find themselves becoming Erelim, but Saminga usually kills them before that happens. Manner and Appearance Decani have much in common with Djinn and Calabim. They tend to slouch and are rarely well-groomed. A mess seems to follow these demons wherever they go; their surroundings inevitably become squalid. Hell’s neat freaks remark that Carriers can make one sick just by describing their apartments. Decani often have Roles as hospital orderlies; their slovenly ways make them stand out too much as doctors or nurses, at least in the long term. Most Decani, being Fallen Erelim, see themselves as feminine. The Hellborn usually prefer male Vessels. The Celestial form of the Decani is a disgusting parody of the human form; many find them even more vile than Shedim. They appear as masses of gangrenous flesh covered with suppurating sores, oozing boils and pulsating tumors. The closest thing that the Carriers have to a musical analog is the incessant droning of flies. Band Attunement (Restricted) Saminga grants his Carriers the ability to detect illness. The demon must succeed on a Perception roll to detect all sick mortals within a radius of (Celestial Forces x CD) yards. If the Decani wants to detect a specific disease, she may do so with a -2 penalty to the CD (treat results less than 1 as 1). A Decani may add its level of Medicine skill to the TN of this roll. Using Medicine to heal still violates Saminga’s Dissonance condition. ===== Michael Walton, #9805-068 "The surest way to keep a secret is to make people believe they already know the answer." - -- Fremen saying __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? There are a LOT of angels on the Council, as well as all the Archangels. This being the case, the process by which words are actually awarded should probably be common knowledge in Heaven. I cannot imagine the Word-granting process as a secret held by so many... especially when Litheroy is one of them! This is something I'd want to work out for my own game if no official answer is forthcoming. There is a reference somewhere, I think in Heaven and Hell, to Lucifer showing all the Fallen that despite being defeated by Michael, he was still the most powerful being among them and only he would be giving out words and the like. Maybe any Superior could in theory grant a Word, but in Heaven they honor the Will of God as they perceive it and follow procedure. Perhaps Lucifer somehow took this power from the other Demon Princes when. Or perhaps he just told them it was so..and they believed him. Perhaps they are just scared...or their opposition of each other inhibits this. Malphas is a Prince for a reason, after all... "You are already Damned. You are the possession of Hell, and will remain here for all eternity, tormented by Lucifer's minions." "Unless..." "you serve me." Those he chooses are the most desperate, the most ruthless, the most determined to do anything to live. Further, they must have the potential for an extra Force (which he can detect) and the injury which killed them must not be too severe. If they choose to swear allegiance to him he grants them a Corporeal Force. The extra health is enough to draw them back to the Corporeal realm, to restore their lives - which are now dedicated to him. It's not even known which Band he is. Most demons assume that he's a Shedite; certainly the humans descriptions sound like one. His ability to track where his Soldiers are makes other demons suspect that he is a particularly ugly Djinn; his persuasiveness and understanding of terror is 'proof' to others that he is a hideously scarred Habbalite. The legends don't say. What the legends DO say is that he was one of the First Fallen, hurled from Heaven with Lucifer's defeat. While the other demons fought for dominance, he travelled to the edge of Hell and waited. Waited for the Damned. Continual experiments showed him how to attach a Force from a demonling to a human and return them to the Corporeal plane. According to some legends, he was the demon who sent the message to Lilith, bargaining for release; other variants have him granted his Word by Lucifer when he discovered the ability, and Lucifer imprinting his personality on a Damned before it was sent back to Lilith. Only Lilith herself is available to say, and you can't afford her price... The Soldiers of Deals With The Darkness work without Infernal supervision - they don't need it, they've proven themselves by damning themselves. They often sell bogus tales of seeing Jesus, Heaven or angels to journalists, both for the money and to hide what really happened. The fact that this often attracts angelic interest is a minor problem - or opportunity. More quietly, they tell their story to those humans who will happily turn to evil if they think that they can avoid death; occasionally they will 'kill' an associate, sending them to the Master - this is their normal method of requesting instructions. They spend the rest of their lives working for Hell, ruining lives and crushing others. Often they are very rich; The ability to control their essence, and the Songs they are taught, are enough to build a mundane empire. they frequently employ Sorcerers and Grey Soldiers as bodyguards and mercenaries. Then they die, and pay the price. The Forces they are granted must come from somewhere. When one of his Soldiers returns, the Dweller strips their Ethereal Forces (which become his Word Forces) granting him their memories, and allowing him to keep up to date with Corporeal developments. Eventually those Forces will be added to a different Soldier. The mindless Soldier continues on to the soulyards; The Game plucks them out, and they become file clerks in Asmodeus' Palace. Asmodeus has never had any interest in the 'Renegade' sitting on a hill in plain view of Hades. Lucifer, on the other hand, is known to drop in and talk about old times. Special Ability: As Friend of Gardeners, but pond scum only, and the die roll modifier is in the opposite direction. It's generally a good idea to be sure that a Word is free before requesting it from Lucifer, Scrie thought to himself after requesting the Word of drowning. Still... Feeling very sorry for himself, Scrie invoked Saminga on a sinking ship and humbly said that since he had a joke Word, he knew that he would be demoted or given to Kobal, but could he keep his attunements, please? they helped him kill people, and killing people was so wonderful, so special... Of course, before doing this, he'd invoked Kobal. Why not? He needed a Superior whose dissonance conditions wouldn't prevent him from spreading pond scum. Besides: Kobal had sponsored Haagenti's rise to Demon Prince, why not Scrie's? Kobal listened in amusement as Scrie went on about his new Word - it was potentially as wide and vast as Flowers, after all - easily Superior level - and Scrie would be a loyal servant during his rise and ally once he became a Prince! Laughing hysterically at the idiot, Kobal agreed to accept Scrie into his service and if he made it to 20 Word Forces, sponsor him to Lucifer. The joke is well known among Kobalites - the Demon of Pond Scum thinks that he'll become a Prince one day - and Jokesters like to pretend that they are 'keeping in his good books' against that day. This has actually helped Scrie enhance his Word, and is part of the reason that Pond Scum is as powerful as a trivial Word can be. To be fair, Scrie hasn't been sitting on his hands. He's carefully researched the nature of pond scum, and has been in contact with Technology; the Demon of Pollution knows that Scrie will ensure the spread of any pollution which encourages the spread of pond scum - it was Pollution who sponsored Scrie for the Balseraph of Technology attunement. Scrie hopes to eventually develop a Rite supporting both his Pond Scum and Pollution. Scrie hands his Rite out freely, even to the zombis he creates (These zombis are frequently of alligators and other creatures who could believably lurk under the pond scum). He specialises in flooding cemeteries, and ensuring that the surface of the water is covered in pond scum; he then uses Sanctuary of the Dead on hapless visitors, either rising from the depths to snap them or possessing them and then leaving them in the graves beneath (Scrie's Monster Vessel and Discord are the results of a trip to Limbo soon after getting his Word). Scrie hopes to broaden his Word to include metaphorical meanings soon. He's hoping to create a band called Pond Scum who will be really bad but get the full Media workout so that lots of people know how bad they are. The goal is that in future hopeless bands will be referred to as "another Pond Scum". this is another project which he dreams of designing a Rite for. Bankrolling this takes money as well as essence. Scrie's Role as a rich financier would collapse overnight if he wasn't constantly funnelling stolen wealth into it. Scrie is a skilled thief (due to large amounts of practice), so he's been able to maintain the Role and support pollution in funding dubious factories etc, and build up his connections with The Media. Scrie's dream, of course, is Princehood. And he has it planned out. He's relying on the habit people have of referring to the Atlantic as 'The Pond'. He and his friends in Technology have been crossbreeding algae to create a version of pond scum which will be completely inedible to all sea creatures, and capable of thriving in on the surface of the Atlantic. It will be bred in vast "salt farms" on the Atlantic coast and ten released. If he can make the terms "The Pond", "Atlantic", and the spreading pond scum synonymous, he hopes he can eventually claim all of the oceans of the world as part of his Word. Kobal, of course, is still in hysterics. James. ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #2408 ********************************
