That sounds useful, as is attuning to data, especially in a cyberpunk setting with a lot of hackers. I am wondering how he protects data from corruption if he is attuned to it, though -- he restores from backup, prevents commands from overwriting it in the first place? I need to work on this a bit. Need to rework this one. *Whew*... I can see some Malakim that will be disliking this Attunement. Laurence, and probably David, for starters... Perhaps if it drew the target into nanosecond-scale Tron-like combat (Angel engages target; *blink*; angel disengages with fresh torso wound, target falls dead of massive head trauma on other end of connection), it would be better balanced. This looks like a wonderful compromise. Thank you! Linked-this allows a link to the SysInstruum or any computerized system without the need of a physical port. Oddly, Evitch isn't seen in Heaven much. The Bright Lilim was recruited by Michael for her past work experience: before defecting, Evitch worked for Baal, Kronos, and Nybbas, and had an interesting amount of intelligence about how their organizations worked. The information she gave to Michael resulted in the destruction of a Tether to the War - and in her sponsorship for Redemption. After working as an undercover agent for years, convincing others to throw off the mantles of oppressive, Hell-run organizations, Michael again sponsored her - - for the Word of Personal Rebellion Against An Unfavored Controlling Organization. Most refer to her as the Angel of Treason, although she herself prefers the longer title; "treason" sounds so unfriendly, and her focus is, after all, on personal freedom. As Linda Ruther, heiress and socialite, she does her best to foment subversion in the highest ranks of the corporate and government world; in her spare time, she's appeared as an unnamed freedom fighter (changing her appearance to match the local physiognomy) in countless wars of rebellion. She's also been responsible for the apprehension and Redemption or destruction of several renegade demons, including her old boss, the Demon of Compromised Loyalty. Then again, she is a former demon, and one with the word of Treason (if she's not around) at that... and while Michael appreciates the work she does, he'd really rather she not do it to his angels... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Nov 2001 15:47:59 -0500 From: "Jeffery Watkins" Subject: Re: IN> November Theme? Exorcists: Sorcerers specialising in the Exorcism skill. Okay, some would be. But all of them? Given how many different cultures and religions have exorcists, at least some would be mundanes, and probably most of them - and not necessarily the least successful, either. Using Exorcism as a form of Human Psychology could achieve very real effects. Further, Sorcerers might find the mundane rituals useful for understanding the skill (as there are currently only 3 Exorcism rituals). I don't have a wide enough knowledge of real world exorcists to be able to write them up, but here's my thoughts on the game mechanics for Rituals different styles: The Mystic Ritual: During a long ceremony (minimum an hour, +2* bonus if it lasts all night) the exorcist rolls Exorcism+Lucid Dreaming [Failure means that the exorcist cannot exorcise this patient, a lower CD means the ritual must continue for another (highest CD) hours]; the roll is contested by the patient's Will, and also by the Shedite's Will (if the patient is in fact possessed). If the exorcist has the highest successful CD, the patient successfully collapses his Dreamscape as he goes to sleep, ejecting anyone present. (This will also eject any native Dream Fragments which have been tormenting the patient). A Demon, of course, will appear at the foot of Beleth's Tower, and so is no longer a threat. An Ethereal (unless a denizen of the Tainte, who returns there) will enter The Marches at the same location as the patient and exorcist, and will need to be dealt with. A Dream fragment ethereally 'killed' at this point is likely gone for ever, as it hasn't had time to adjust to The Marches. In addition, because the patient has been lead through the process of collapsing his dreamscape, the exorcist can monitor the patient's dreams, increasing any use of the Knowledge(Human Psychology), Detect Lies, Fast-Talk and Lying skills on the patient, simplifying treatment on mental illness. *Alternatively, the bonus is equal to the exorcists level of the Merciful Disadvantage, to reflect the greater expertise which peaceful religions seem to have with exorcisms. The Scholarly ritual: After setting up an impressive site for the exorcism, the exorcist chants a complicated formula learnt by rote; the rote MUST be in both the patient's native tongue AND another language, perceived as being a scholarly/holy language (Latin, Sanskrit etc). Exorcism is treated as a Knowledge skill in this tradition; if successful the patient may add the CD of the roll to his Will rolls to resist a currently inhabiting Shedite (if he does so, he loses the bonus from a successful Perception roll). This bonus is kept until the demons leaves, and has been gone for more than a day. If the exorcism has been triggered by a mental Disadvantage (or Addiction) ie "exorcise the demon causing his Angry outbursts", a successful roll (at a penalty equal to the patient's Total Forces) will provide some protection from the disadvantage; a failed Will roll to resist the Disadvantage with a CD lower than the CD of the Exorcism roll is treated as a success. This effect continues until the patient fails a Will roll versus the Disadvantage with a CD equal to or higher than the exorcists, at which point all benefits vanish. A patient who does not believe that this certain to be beneficial must resist the exorcism with a Will roll. And yes, this CAN be used on celestials and their Discords. The Warrior Ritual: Here, the exorcist attempts to beat the demon out of the patient's body. The exorcist uses the Exorcism skill as a Small Weapon skill, repeatedly striking the patient with various disturbing items. The patient takes damage equal to the CD; however, if the CD exceeds 4, the damage is Ethereal! (This skill was developed by trying to recreate NC:Tongue) - Ethereal damage is inflicted on a Possessor (if present) or, if not: any Dream Fragments (if the patient is aware of them); otherwise the patient takes the damage! If the patient is reduced to zero Mind Hits by the ritual, the resulting Disadvantage will be one opposing the one which triggered the exorcism; Cowardly for Angry etc. This may aid the patient - more likely it will drive him insane. Any time the exorcist fails a skill roll he takes damage equal to the CD (which will be Mind hits if the CD exceeds 4). The exorcist MUST take a risk on every roll, otherwise the ritual fails. Hopefully people will have fun inflicting these on Shedim, and hapless mortals. Does anyone have a sufficiently broad knowledge of anthropology to describe real world rituals? Cheers, James. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Nov 2001 18:02:30 +0800 From: Manny Nepomuceno Subject: IN> Servants of the Fallen VI: Martin Hey, I'm clearing out my "Unfinished" folder. It seems I've got a lot of work ahead of me... ;) Manny Neps http://www.geocities.com/angeloffools Martin The Angel of Martyrs Malakite of Faith Corporeal Forces 4: Strength 8, Agility 8 Ethereal Forces 3: Intelligence 6, Precision 6 Celestial Forces 3: Will 6, Perception 6 Word-Forces: 4 Vessel: Human male (Caucasian male)/4 Attunements: Malakite of Purity*, Malakite of Faith, That Which Moves Mountains, The Angel of Martyrs** Songs: Form (Celestial/3), Light (Celestial/3) Skills: Knowledge (Religious History/4), Fighting (Brawling)/3 Special Rites: - - Test a martyr's faith. Malakite Oaths: i. Never surrender or allow myself to be captured by the armies of Lucifer. ii. Suffer not an evil to live, when it's my choice. iii. Forsake not my faith or the symbols of my faith, heedless of cost. iv. Allow none to dishonor a martyr in my presence. v. Never disrespect another's faith in a divinely inspired religion. *Malakite of Purity: Uriel's Malakim receive a bonus to the CD of a successful resonance roll equal to the level of dissonance or Discord of the creature currently being resonated, whichever is higher. Disadvantages will also raise the CD. The Virtue will become aware of how much dissonance his subject has, as well as the level and type of his Discord, provided that the resonance roll is successful. **The Angel of Martyrs: Martin generates no dissonance for killing (or injuring) a human whose destiny is to be martyred, provided that the manner of his death allows his destiny to be fulfilled. In addition, killing performed in this manner will generate only half the regular amount of Symphonic disturbance, but this disturbance will be instantly recognizable as divine in origin. Martyrs so slain will recognize their killer as an angel. Newly returned from a long stint on Earth, the Angel of Martyrs is once more acclimatizing to Heavenly society. For nearly a thousand years, he has walked the corporeal plane, assisting in the deaths of hundreds of martyrs. Now it is time for him to return to the graces of the Archangel of Faith. After a thousand years of bloodshed, he's tired of his work. He'd like nothing more than to take a couple of decades off and teach in the Groves...he's not very good at hand-to-hand combat, but he's got a few moves that he's willing to share. Khalid, however, has other plans for him. While he's not Muslim (he's a Roman Catholic, and proud of it), there are a number of Muslims whose destinies have yet to be fulfilled...and they all involve dying in a messy, public and unpleasant manner. Guess who gets to pull the trigger on these holy fanatics? It wouldn't be the first time. Eons ago, as a humble Roman soldier, he was ordered to nail a man to a heavy wooden cross. The resultant chaos after Christ's execution convinced him that God had indeed manifested in this 'King of the Jews'. He became a Christian almost immediately. For fulfilling the demands of his Role, and for the faith he so clearly displayed in the aftermath of Christ's execution, he was granted the Word of Martyrs. Some say he was Word-bound by God himself at the moment of the Crucifixion. In that regard, at least, he overtook Uriel, who needed a lot of convincing by Khalid that the Catholic faith was divinely inspired. When the Archangel of Purity converted to Christianity, no one was happier than Martin. The subsequent conversion of most of his fellow Servitors of Purity was mere icing on the cake. Because of his duties on Earth, Martin was unable to participate in the Purity Crusade. He did, however, support it wholeheartedly, and was surprised when Uriel was recalled to the Higher Heavens. Laurence's ascension was a shock to the Malakite, who already felt betrayed by the loss of his Archangel. Dazed and unwilling to commit to the new Archangel of the Sword, the Angel of Martyrs returned to the corporeal plane, an Outcast in all but name. Only his unbroken Heart remained in Heaven, silently waiting in Uriel's cathedral. When Khalid was raised to Archangel, he allowed himself to hope again. He'd had a few dealings with Khalid, and had been quite impressed by the well-respected Elohite. He returned to Heaven and was offered a job by the new Archangel of Faith. Without a second thought, Martin accepted. Khalid returned to Earth to further his Word. Martin followed. That's where it all went wrong. Khalid's uncompromising patronage of the Islamic faith has been a constant source of tempation to Martin...he understands the call of Islam, and has nothing but respect for it. But he is also deeply committed to the Catholic faith, and can't reconcile the differences between the two belief systems. When Khalid began putting pressure on his Servitors to convert, Martin knew he couldn't, in good faith, become a Muslim...so he refused his Archangel. That didn't go over too well with Khalid. To his credit, the Archangel of Faith has treated his Christian Servitor as well as any other. True, Martin has not been Distincted, despite long years of service. True, Martin has not been granted any additional Rites or attunements, despite his own zealousness in maintaining his faith. Khalid explains this by pointing out that Martin has spent years out of touch with Heaven or his Archangel. Martin shrugs and carries on. He doesn't need any special resources to carry out his duties. When Khalid returned to Heaven's graces, Martin accepted him with equal measures of relief and wariness. After all, he's been betrayed twice already, both times by Superiors who thought they were being true to themselves. He still looks at Khalid askance, although the old Elohite has been much more open and willing to dialogue since his return. The rest of Heaven has taken note of the attitude of the Angel of Martyrs; with so much in the balance, Martin is under a great deal of pressure to make up with his Archangel. Whether he does so or not has yet to be seen. (The attunement from Purity is conjectural. Martin is a point-balanced character.) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Nov 2001 18:27:49 +0800 From: Manny Nepomuceno Subject: IN> Servants of the Fallen VII: Ibnash Hey, Moe requested a Servitor of Corruption a long time ago. Here he is. ;) Manny Neps http://www.geocities.com/angeloffools Ibnash The Demon of Corruption Impudite of Corruption Corporeal Forces 3: Strength 6, Agility 6 Ethereal Forces 2: Intelligence 4, Precision 4 Celestial Forces 3: Will 7, Perception 5 Suggested Word-Forces: 24 Vessel: Human male (Latino male)/2, Charisma +2 Attunements: Impudite of Corruption*, Tainted Touch**, The Demon of Corruption*** Songs: Shields (Celestial/4), Form (Celestial/4) Skills: Fast-Talk/4 Special Rites: - Introduce a mortal to a new vice. - Sabotage an important project. - Slay a Tsayadim (+3 Essence). * Impudite of Corruption: Each successful use of his resonance on a mortal acts like a Shedite's corrupting influence, eroding the mortal's ethics and value systems. The subjects of their resonance may resist with a successful Will roll. Take note that to Charm and Steal Essence involves two successive uses of an Impudite's resonance! ** Tainted Touch: Servitors of Legion with this attunement may create a field of entropy around their hands for the cost of 3 Essence. This mimics the Calabite resonance and lasts for 1 hour. Any material coming into contact with the field of entropy is slowly destroyed: metal is corroded, water is befouled and even the air around the demon takes on a foul stench. *** The Demon of Corruption: Make no mistake -- Corruption is still a Prince-level Word, despite the insignificance of the celestial bound to it. In addition to being aware of the general state of moral strength and decay in the world, Ibnash can determine the level of moral conviction in anyone he sees. Ibnash is also capable of emulating the Calabite resonance around his entire body, on a successful Will roll. It is believed that he is capable of granting the attunements of the now-dead Legion, but he has never done so. After the death of the Prince of Corruption, all of his Servitors were rounded up and killed, with only a select few kept alive for Asmodeus and Lucifer to play with. One of them, an Impudite named Ibnash, was specifically chosen by Lucifer to be an example for the rest of his minions. Never again would he allow a Demon Prince to run amok, or to gain enough power to threaten both Heaven and Hell. Ibnash spent two hundred years in the Lower Hells, learning the lesson that he was to impart to others. Then Lucifer gave him the Word of Corruption and set him loose. He's been haunting Hell ever since. Let's be clear: he's not a Prince. At eight Forces, the Demon of Corruption is weaker than the average angel, and certainly much weaker than the four Djinn of the Game who follow him everywhere. He's meant to serve as a reminder to would-be renegade Princes of the dangers of too much independent thinking. Intelligent Princes get the picture. Those who don't get a visit from a Word-bound Impudite with Lucifer's mark of favor branded into his forehead. Not that Ibnash is happy, mind you. Certainly, he's got a Word that every Shedite wants, but the cost is painfully high. The fact that an Impudite holds the Word of Corruption has irked the Shedim no end -- and Lucifer likes it that way, since the Shedim can often get troublesome in Hell. Some Calabim want words with Ibnash as well. For their part, the Djinn smile nastily and say that the Shedim had it coming to them...and the four Djinn protecting Ibnash are very, very careful to prevent Shedim from getting him alone. PCs encountering Ibnash will find him rather...meek. Two hundred years with Lucifer will do that to you. He's actually a redemption candidate, and he'd dearly love to be rid of his burden, were it not for the fact that his bodyguards have strict orders to slap him down whenever he acts out of line. While he's extremely dangerous by virtue of his attunements and his Word, he's actually something of a drudge, and would rather run than fight. This hasn't discouraged the Tsayadim or Laurence from declaring him a mortal enemy of Heaven. Angels of the Sword earn a refill-all-Essence bounty for slaying Ibnash; the Tsayadim are just willing to kill him on the general principle that any Demon of Corruption is a death sentence waiting to be carried out. (His attunements from Corruption are conjectural. Ibnash is a point-balanced character.) ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #2428 ********************************
