Silence - Captive Vignette Part 2 Colonel Robert Parks watched the aliens conversing from his seat in the control booth. He always found it fascinating to watch the things interact with each other - although there were obvious hostilities between the members of the two camps, they were willing to discuss escape plans with each other. This showed a level of intelligence and pragmatism that he would have expected in them, but he couldn't help but wonder what things were truly like when they weren't forced to cooperate. Reports of inter-species fighting were sketchy at best, but the martial prowess of these particular specimens had been extremely well documented. 'Too well documented for my tastes,' he mused to himself as he rubbed his still-blackened eye. The hispanic - looking one... Ricardo... had made an attempt to escape, and it had taken several guards to restrain him after his last physical examination. At least everyone had survived this time - and although one of the black berets was going to be in the hospital for the next couple of months, nothing was permanently damaged. That was a small miracle in and of itself, considering the last time an escape had been attempted. The 'Malakite' had somehow managed to kill seven marines with a coffeepot, a toothbrush and a rolled up newspaper. The camera had caught everything from multiple angles and they still weren't sure how things had degenerated so quickly. Orders had come down from Central Command that these aliens weren't to be killed - not even the 'Malakite' - after the last two months of trying to extract information from him had proven only marginally successful, they'd decided to put him back with the others. It made a sort of sense, but Parks couldn't shake the feeling that he was in charge of watching the largest and most dangerous group of alien prisoners for the seven hours. He took a sip from the small flask of whiskey that he kept with him at all times since he'd signed on with Project Silence, and steeled himself for the task at hand. Pushing a series of buttons on the console in front of him, he engaged the microphone for Containment Unit Alpha 3, and said a prayer that the guards standing behind him wouldn't have to pull the trigger for him as they'd had to do for several of his predecessors. "Good afternoon, everyone. How is everyone today?" He watched as the conversations stopped on the monitors in front of him. In order to add an extra level of security, all the conversations between the aliens in the containment units and humans were screened through computers. This insured that they only heard a computer simulation of his voice, but more importantly it gave him an extra level of defense against their mental domination attempts. By keeping him from hearing their voices, it allowed him to be somewhat more objective. Their responses came up on their screens in front of him, giving their typical questions and demands for release. He'd come to expect hostility from Zachariah, Abbesial and Denise, silence from Sallah, Marcus and Zemuviel, and polite, if strained, responses from Janelle, Ricardo, 'Ace' and even Cameron. He looked over everything before responding to them. "Janelle, I understand that you may be having some problems with your human form degrading. My superiors have expressed some concern about this. If you can tell us what sort of materials you require, I'm sure we can arrange something." He watched the screen as the words came back. "(CHUCKLE) I'm afraid it doesn't work that way, Controller Bob. This is what happens to me if I can't leave an area in a certain amount of time. If you can't let me out of here, then we both have to sit here and watch this happen." "I'm afraid that's out of the question. They can't be any prisoner exchanges at this time. If this should ever change, the military's standard policy is to release the sick first, so that will put you at the top of the list. I know that may be small consolation, but we are truly concerned for your welfare during your internment here." He watched as the screens lit up with comments about the 'internment', and waited a few moments for them to calm down. "As you know, Mr. Cameron did manage to escape for a short time several months ago, but we caught him before he could get too far. I've been told that the majority of his injuries have been taken care of, and that he'll be rejoining you all today before your next period of cryo stasis." He paused for a second more before continuing. "I've also been told that, thanks to Mr. Cameron's assistance, we will be having another person joining you all. Before you become agitated with him, I think it should be clear that he had absolutely no choice in this matter. We would appreciate it if you would make sure to extend the same courtesy to these two that you show to each other. With your cooperation, we're certain that a peaceful resolution can be reached." He frowned as he watched Zemuviel's monitor light up with "I wish you would stop lying to us, human." Shaking his head, he spoke again. "The truth is, I do hope that a lasting peace can be established between your governments and my own. I feel that an alliance between our two worlds would be beneficial to all concerned, but since your covert operations have shown that you are seeking to undermine our intelligence and military complexes, I don't know that this will happen soon. If your leaders would simply approach us openly, we would be more than willing to discuss the matter." He watched as the screens lity up with their typical denials of wrongdoing, then he saw a red light flashing on his console. "Everyone, please stand by - - Mr. Cameron and your new associate are entering the chamber now." The airlocks hissed open as a platoon of armed soldiers in biohazard suits wheeled a smiling teenager and a gagged man in a business suit into the room on the strange wheelchair-like devices that the aliens had become accustomed to. The soldiers slipped the gag off of the older man, and then backed out of the room without turning their backs on the aliens for a moment. He watched as the chatter increased - the man was apparently screaming for his release, as was typical. That his superiors would hear about this and make us pay the price for our crimes. Everyone was telling him to shut up, that it wouldn't do any good. - ------------- After a few hours of acclimatization, he left the booth to put on his racal suit for the transfer. 'This is always the fun part,' he thought to himself. If any of them were going to try to escape, it would be in the short distance between the common room where they were kept between examinations when out of stasis, and the main cryo chambers where they would have their drug levels brought back up to the required doses to prevent them from using their abilities freely. After being sure that all the connections were secured, he met with the other 'Controllers' in the outer airlock. "All right - we've got a new one in there who hasn't been fully classified, so let's stay sharp. I want four people with the new one, and three with Cameron and Denise. If any of you start feeling like they're trying to dominate you, just hit your panic buttons and we'll take care of it." As they wheeled their charges down the hallway towards their cryo trays, Janelle looked back at him. "Controller Bob, may I ask you a question?" "Certainly Janelle, although I can't promise an answer." "How long are we going to be under this time?" He thought about it for a moment. "Probably about 2 weeks. The new person with you all doesn't have any of the drugs in his system, and they'll have to wait until everything gets up to the proper levels." He noticed her pale slightly, and spoke again. "Hey, I know you're somewhat claustrophobic and I'm sorry it'll take that long. But cheer up - they'll have to do a bunch of debriefings on the new guy here, and that should mean you'll have plenty of time out of the - "Bob, do me a favor. You know how the... cancer... has been getting worse? There is a stage that it'll hit very soon where it'll affect my mind. A lot. I don't have too long before that happens, so I want you to do something for me. When I come out of stasis, I'll be just as nice and polite as I ever was. But you won't be able to trust me - I'll be willing to hurt people, I'll start plotting more ways out of here, I'll..." She paused for a moment, and he say her lip shaking slightly before she spoke again. "When I get out again, I won't be the same. And I... I know you're just doing your job and all, and I want you to know I forgive you for all of this now, before I... forget everything." Robert stopped her chair in front of her cryo-tube, and started buckling her into it. When he was finished, he reached for the button to begin the injection sequence, but then looked around to make sure that no one was looking, and reached down to squeeze her hand lightly. He bent down and whispered in her ear, "Don't worry - you're going to make it. I'll make sure to say an extra prayer for you, ok?" He smiled reassuringly down at her as he pressed the button, and watched her eyes close as she smiled slightly. He shook his head - of all the aliens, she came off as the most human of any of them, and it was a shame that she had to the one that was ill. He'd actually come to like talking to her... - --------------- A few nights later, Colonel Parks walked through the rows of cryo tubes, performing the head count every hor as regulations called for. He'd gone over the communications from the past several days, and had realized something. Janelle wasn't just sick as she kept insisting - she was close to death, and everyone knew it. It had never been stated outright, but it was clear through looking at the moods and the subtexts of their discussions. The cancer was systemic, and what was worse, it was becoming more and more clear just what it was doing to her. He walked back towards his control booth for the cryo stations, with a heavy heart and the knowledge that in the morning, he was going to lose his commission for what was going to happen. Somehow, in the middle of the night, cryo tank number 6 with subject Janelle inside was going to fail. The investigation would show that there had been a power failure which had been caused by the failure of an internal fuse. The correct fuse, the one that was in his hand, would most likely be found by internal security at some point. And then they'd come looking for him. He couldn't believe that he was willing to risk his job, his career and possibly his life for one of these aliens, but he knew that it had to be done. 'You can't ignore someone's pain without becoming a party to it,' he thought to himself. Maybe it was just because he was thinking about this new guy from 'Judgment', but he thought he'd made the right choice. The aliens obviously had the ability to worship a God of some sort, and 'Ace' and Marcus had already said they were Catholic. Hopefully that prayer that he'd said as he pulled the fuse would help her get to Heaven, or where good aliens when when they died. 'One can always hope for the best -' His thought was interrupted by the explosive concussion he heard in his head. He whipped around, one hand holding his head as the other pulled his sidearm. He started to scream an alarm, then stopped and stared as he watched the twelve foot tall cloaked figure staring down into the cryo tube where the new captive was being kept. He started to back away as quietly as he could, watching as more and more shimmering forms began to materialize beside the large one that was turning to face him with what seemed like a thousand sets of glowing eyes that were burning into his soul. He pulled out his radio as he started running - "EDE'S HAVE TAKEN THE BASE! I REPEAT, THEY'RE HERE! WE'VE BEEN COMPROMISED! BLOW THE CORE! BLOW THE CORE! BLOW THE -" (to be continued) Michael Cleveland Gulf Coast Geotech _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2001 11:33:12 -0800 From: "Christopher Hughes" Subject: IN> Re: in_nomine-digest V1 #2445 <> This was great. Well, actually, Revelations DID advance the setting -- Khalid was restored to grace, and Magog was toast. At least that's the strong implication, but enough "outs" were left so that GMs who wanted to keep Magog around could do so without feeling like their setting was necessarily violating canon. The problem is, some people want a canon ruling that Magog did/did not survive. Revelations makes it clear that the default assumption is that he did not, but I don't think SJG is going to officially declare him dead, because they want to leave the possibility of his survival open for individual GMs. OTOH, it's unlikely they're going to have him reappear, because that would screw GMs who declared him dead. - -David ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2001 15:38:29 -0500 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: IN> Lilim Princesses (Re: Magog) At 10:10 PM -0500 11/14/01, William J. First, glad you liked it. Two responses - First, I didn't have the Ofanite being dissonant. The way I play it, Ofanim may not become dissonant from not moving around much, but that doesn't mean he's comfortably by any stretch of the word. As long as he tries to escape, (and as long as he can fidget, IMC) he's not going to Fall. Windies, OTOH, I play just like Thieves. If you can't leave after 72 hours in a particular area, you take dissonance. You get stuck in prison, you start taking dissonance. If you can't find a way to escape after a long enough time... well, if you're an Ofanite, you decide that the quickest way past an obstacle is _through_ it. Janelle may not have been dissonant from her nature - she didn't harm a single human head - but getting locked up and knocked out for weeks at a time in a cryo chamber takes its toll. They are a variation on Worship Rites, used to discourage misuse of Rites and attunements. Knowledge of how to design has since spread through out Heaven and also to Hell and The Marches. A Punishment Rite designed by a lesser Word Bound is no more than a Worship Rite which cannot be refused. Developing one costs 3 character points, and counts against the maximum number of Rites the Word Bound may develop. The Punishment Rite can only be given to a Servant or willing subject (usually as part of a deal for normal Rites). Each Punishment Rite is 'usable' once per day, like any other Rite; further, if the character does not have any essence the Rite will not trigger. Essence lost to this Rite does not go to the Word Bound, but instead pours into the Symphony, preventing the degradation of the Word. Punishment Rites created by Superiors are more serious. They may function multiple times during a day, and if the Servitor does not have any essence, they strip away 5 soul hits! (But cannot remove a Force). They usually punish actions contrary to the spirit of the Word - Jordi's Punishment Rite of "Doing anything which would earn Darwin Award Commendation" (Not phrased like that, of course) is very popular with other Superiors, and he often hands it out at the request of Novalis or Eli. Getting rid of a Punishment Rite is incredibly difficult, similar to Geas stripping. The Word Bound who granted the Rite can remove it at will, but will rarely do so. If a Superior is present when a Celestial Redeems/Falls, they can remove all Punishment Rites with a thought, so very few of the Redeemed have any - although those who Redeem via Tears Of God or Founts of Inspiration will keep any they possess. It's more common for the Fallen to possess Punishment Rites from the other side. Sample Punishment Rites: Blandine: Preventing a tired human from sleeping (Beleth has *never* removed this Rite, BTW). David: Leave an organization. Dominic: Misuse a Heavenly Rite or Attunement. Eli: Discourage artistic talents or ambitions. Gabriel: Fail to punish cruelty to an animal. Janus: Claim True ownership of an item, without showing gratitude to God. Jean: Damage an electrical device through carelessness or neglect. Jordi: Fail to use one's talents when in danger (described above). Laurence: Fail to stand up for one's convictions. Marc: Violate unwritten social rules for personal gain. Michael: Submit to unjust authority, or an unjust ruling. Novalis: Act spitefully. Yves: Refuse to listen to advice (refusing to follow it is fine, and you don't have to listen to the same advice more than once). Andrealphus: Neglect your personal appearance Asmodeus: Think you'll get away with it. Baal: Disobey orders (many AA's leave this one) Beleth: Calm a human down. Belial: maintain a safety device Haagenti: Refuse a (twenty)second helping Kobal: Hide your feelings when you're the target of a joke. Kronos: Aim for a win/win situation. Lilith: Defend authority Malphas: Avoid people you'll fight with. Saminga: Damage a dead body. Valefor: Acknowledge another's rights. Vapula: Use or teach a technique which does not require bought equipment. One nitpick: > Azazel (whose name means either "goat-god" or simply "removal") is a > very old demon, one of the first Lilim created by Lilith, and far older > than the late Saminga. Sadly impossible, as Saminga predates the Fall. Well done! Or refugees? Assuming that a Renegade doesn't have what it takes to Redeem, and human Govt's know about Heaven & Hell, asking for political Asylum would be tempting. After all, a demonic resonance would be a very tempting bribe, and human govt's have witness protection schemes etc to hide the demon from Hell. Played carefully, human govt's could actually become independent players in the War, possibly under the protection of Auntie. There's an idea in the GIN for alien races which share mindsets with other choirs/bands, the way humans do with Mercurians/Impudites. Here's my thoughts for a race/world in sync with Seraphim/Balseraphs: ========================================================= Quoted from an unknown work in the Special Collection of Yves Library: ..... As all of the sentient races of (world name untranslatable into any human language) refer to themselves, and their domesticated mimics, as (race name which translates roughly as "the people") Celestials usually refer to the natives as either "Mullerians" or "Batesians", depending on their primary survival strategy. [Editors note: Mullerian mimicry describes how poisonous species evolve a similar appearance, so that predators are warned off all of the poisonous species; Batesian mimicry describes how non-poisonous species benefit by copying poisonous species]. Not all of the Mullerian species are sentient. Several poisonous species have been domesticated. Before moving into a new territory, the sentient Mullerians drive their non-sentient mimics into the area; once local predators have either been poisoned or learnt to avoid the new creatures, the sentient Mullerians can move in without risk. Not all of the predators on the planet have been eliminated; a handful have been domesticated, and are used in the ongoing 'war' with the Batesians. The Batesian species developed sentience early, needing the additional intelligence to copy the habits of the Mullerians. Their need to duplicate the Mullerian mating habits kept their numbers low until they achieved a form of Symphonic Awareness, less than thirty thousand years ago. The Batesians had already been using the mundane forms of Alchemy to duplicate the inherent poisons of their Mullerian fellows; once the Batesians acquired sufficient Awareness to be able to use the Alchemy skill Symphonically the different races merged, as they were able to create potions duplicating the Corporeal Song of Fruition. Within a thousand years, the current situation had arisen, where the mixed ancestry of the locals means that they cannot reproduce without the use of alchemical preparations, and all adults have the Alchemy skill and the ability to duplicate a handful of Corporeal Songs (Notably, the following Songs: Fruition, Healing, Harmony[affects the individual consuming the potion only], Disease, Dreams[Allows two or more individuals to combine Dreamscapes], Charm and Poison). They cannot use Songs directly, no matter how many Forces they acquire. Despite their mixed ancestry, the age old war between the two groups continues. As the Batesians seek to pass themselves off as Mullerians, they are often the loudest proponents of continuing the war to exterminate 'the parasites'. Further understanding of this world is best acquired by seeing which elements of the society are encouraged by which Superiors: Michael: War seeks to eliminate the Batesian 'threat' - however, those Batesians who use the Alchemy skill to render themselves toxic to predators are considered to be Mullerian by adoption, and War will defend these Alchemists from lynching. Neither Mullerians nor Batesians are particularly combat capable, as they do not need to fight off predators nor do they compete in mating fights. When the Mullerians acquired the ability to detect Batesians, War began the process of domesticating predators. The shrewder predators swiftly learnt to hunt any being which was being ostracised by the Mullerians. Baal: Before the Rebellion, Baal worked side by side with Michael. Since then, he adapted his strategies to become the patron of 'witch hunts' and assassins. He and Michael clash over the treatment of Batesians who seek to duplicate the Mullerian poisons - Baal eggs on those who seek to destroy them, either from a desire for 'purity' or to hide their own Batesian natures. Also, by faking the hostility due to a Batesian, a semi-domesticated predator can be induced to attack anybody; as both predator and prey are killed by this, a ruthless individual can eliminate rivals for a mate, or destroy a suspected Batesian without personal risk. By encouraging this, Baal clashes with: Dominic: Judgement seeks to prevent anyone, Mullerian, Batesian or domesticated predator, from judging another incorrectly. Dominic regards his most important task here to be ending the use of predators as one shot assassins. As such, he encourages the process of domestication; if a predator is trained to only hunt when given a command by a specific owner, then not only are assassinations deterred by the loss of a valuable pet, finding the murderer is simple. Sadly, this is being resisted by: Lucifer: Light regards Mullerian/Batesian species as being 'higher lifeforms' - at least compared to humanity - and so Lucifer will deign to intervene directly. (A number of his Servitors from before the Fall serve here). Although Lucifer's actions are still rare, they are usually devastating - Lucifer has been teaching the Batesians how to duplicate *specific* Mullerians: in addition to stealing mates, this allows a Batesian to frame a "pet owner" for murder. Litheroy: Revelations seeks to encourage the spread of the Alchemy skill; partly to allow the Batesians to become adoptive Mullerians, partly because of the general usefulness of the skill. Litheroy also hammers home the point that there are no 'pure breeds' on the planet - everybody is part Mullerian, part Batesian: something which is ignored by most other Superiors. As such he encourages the use of Alchemy to duplicate Mullerian poisons *even when not necessary* as it increases the similarities between all poisonous beings. Mullerians are highly resistant to disease, due to the poisons in their systems; Litheroy has been encouraging this and aiding the development of their Medicine skill. Revelations regards unmasking Lucifer's dopplegangers as their most important task - however, most of their time is spent resisting: Mammon: Greed is surprisingly strong on the planet; the wide spread use of the Alchemy skill means that the raw ingredients form the basis of what passes for currency on the planet. Mammon encourages the spread of 'counterfeiting' - trading components which seem to work (but don't) and hiding potential sources. Mammon also tempts with the knowledge that it only has to *look* as if you are dosing yourself with poisons - better, surely, to save the components for another potion? The Superiors have names in the local language, which will be used to describe different personality types; to be a "Michaeline", "Dominican" or "Litheroyd" is a common term, used to describe one's outlook - which make life much easier for Seraphim. Incidentally, the race name (meaning 'the people') can be used by Seraphim as it refers to ALL sentient beings, and Archangels are careful to build Vessels so that a Seraphim can Truthfully claim to be Mullerian (as the body is inherently poisonous). Creating a Mullerian/Batesian character: All adults have at least six Forces, although many acquire Disadvantages when they gain their sixth Force (these advantages cannot be bought off, and are identical in nature to the Discords of Nephallim/Gorgons. A starting character cannot have any other Disadvantages). Extra Forces are only possible if the character buys the potential Forces (at 4 points each) at character creation - this is not possible if the character has Disadvantages. They cannot have positive charisma (as being different is always unpopular), negative charisma cause a reaction penalty of -3 per level. Advantages: Hereditary Poisons (2 points each): The character has a poisonous nature due to their Mullerian heritage. Each poison has a Strength equal to the number of Poisons (Hereditary or Acquired) in the characters system, a Speed equal to the Characters Potential Forces minus 3, and a Duration equal to (8 minus Total Forces). A character can have a maximum of 6 Hereditary Poisons; 7 would indicate a full blood Mullerian. Acquired Poisons (2 points each at character creation, 3 points each from then on): The character knows their own biochemistry sufficiently well to duplicate Hereditary Poisons. A character can never have more Acquired Poisons than they have levels of Alchemy. The Poisons have a strength and speed equal to the characters Alchemy skill, and a duration of (number of poisons in system) minutes squared. Acquired Poisons require no in-game upkeep. Special Skill: Alchemy is a primary skill for all characters. Rituals are bought as normal, but do not require knowledge of the linked Song. The TN is skill level*2; time required is measured in hours rather than days. Servants: Predators are available as servants; a level/1 Servant will have 3 Corporeal Forces and One Ethereal Force. Each additional level grants an additional Corporeal Force (maximum 5), OR a protection bonus of + 4 ( once only) or a power of +5 (once only). A level/6 Servant will also have a Celestial Force. ================================================================ James. ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #2446 ********************************
