Earl ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 11:05:07 -0500 From: Cameron McCurry Subject: IN> Ever wonder... ....why there is no Demon of Hackers? Don't be fooled; Hackers has the potential to become a powerful Word for the side of Hell. And I'm not saying that there is a shortage of Demons who want to earn the Word either. Demons of Dark Humor, Fate, Media, Secrets, Technology and Theft can be found at any time vying for the prestige of earning the title of Demon of Hackers. Sure, there's a precis style explanation to all of this. But bear with me; the longer version is better. First of all, the competition for this Word has some pretty strict rules. Any demon who wants it must have skill in computers beyond knowing where the power switch is and the location of the any key (Yep. Hell's computers have the any key. That's a story for another time). In addition to computer skills, the candidate has to find out when the competition is being held. This is accomplished by logging into InfernoNet and checking the announcements. Of course, if you don't have an account or a password for InfernoNet in the first place you're already SOL. So let's say the demon gets in (By earning an account or creating one of their own). They still have to get to the test site, which is in Vapula's lab. They have to decode the instructions and find their way into the test site without blowing up, liquidating, electrocuting, incenerating...ah to heck with it. This is Vapula's lab we're discussing. You think it, it could happen to you. Once they get to the test site, they have to take a 200 question test. This is somewhat comprehensive and covers everything from how computers talk to each other to advanced programming techniques. At the end, there are no more than three demons who have made it this far. And that's when competition begins. The victi...err...candidates must abide by the following rules. 1. They are to be on Earth for one year and promoting the Word of Hackers. 2. They may not engage in open hostilities towards each other (Hiring flunkies is acceptable, but that's an unwritten rule). 3. They must live at least 500 miles away from each other. Once they agree to it, they are sent to Earth without delay. And then it gets fun. You see, Orc is pretty aware of this competition. And both Ord and his friend and former servant Bedeul (The Angel of Geeks) *really* get annoyed with it. So they break out their copies of Ways of Making a Demon's Life Miserable (First edition, hardcover. Available at finer angelic bookstores). And they are very dangerous when they work together. The two angels keep an eye out for an increase in demonic hacking activity. They are old enough that they have seen most of the tricks and can recognize potential problem areas. Once they are certain that a hacker is a demon AND participating in the competition, they sit down with a few monkey wrenches and get to work. First time around, the demon notices that he is having trouble connecting to the network. The hardware is fine, but it won't stay connected for longer than a second. Even a Shedite of Technology runs into problems with his laptop. The second time is when bigger problems happen. Maybe the demon just joined a telemarketing company's mailing list without knowing. Perhaps they have a problem trying to figure out where some vital files are. Or they turned on their computer and are greeted with a blank screen. The demons with the high Ethereal Forces typically get the hint and drop out of the competition at this point. But for the persistent ones that are determined to stay with this comes a real special reward. Orc and Bedeul have figured out that this demon is not going to listen to reason and they are going to finish this quickly. But they don't need to get their own wings bloody. Not when there are several Michaelites that would love to pay this demon a visit in return for some prototype weapon that Jean thinks needs field testing. Or if the demon is living in seclusion in the woods with a T-1 line, Novalis and Jordi's people get to deal with the matter. The record of survival in this competition is 4 months, 20 days, 13 hours and 26.334 seconds. And there have only been 9 candidates so far. Final note about the competition. When the finalist is brutally removed from existence, a certain Balseraph by the name of Sparky gets a multimedia file. Sparky holds all calls and appointments for a half hour, grabs a bag of chocolate coated popcorn and opens the file, which turns out to be a film clip of the demon's last painful moments. (No one knows how Orc got Sparky's email, where the film comes from or where Sparky gets his popcorn. Don't bother asking.). And yet, some demon thinks that they know how to win and that they will try to enter the next time the competition begins... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 16:21:35 From: "Charles Glasgow" Subject: Re: IN> Ever wonder... >From: Cameron McCurry >Subject: IN> Ever wonder... >Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 11:05:07 -0500 [snip] >And yet, some demon thinks that they know how to win and that they >will try to enter the next time the competition begins... So... > >...what was the exact sentence imposed on the Grigori? A more detailed story of the Grigori, or Watchers, and their leader Semjaza, can be found in the apocryphal Book of Enoch or Henoch. There is a great deal in the Book of Enoch, who was an antediluvian prophet who "walked with God" for a time. The Catholic Encyclopedia (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01602a.htm) has an excellent treatment of the Book of Enoch, and you can find the full text elsewhere on the net; what seems the most complete version of the text is at http://wesley.nnu.edu/noncanon/ot/pseudo/enoch.htm It is interesting to note that there are two groups of Watchers: those in Heaven, and those 'who have left the high heaven.' These last are the Grigori of IN canon, the ones who 'defiled themselves with women.' The Grigori (in the Book of Enoch) petitioned for forgiveness; this came after Enoch told them that they would know no mercy or peace and all they held beloved would be destroyed. The exact sentence was communicated from Heaven by Enoch. Basically, their petition was rejected. They were also admonished for asking Enoch to bring their petition to God, being told, 'You should intercede for men, and not men for you.' (Harkening to the Mercurians, perhaps?) The Grigori would no longer be permitted to ascend to Heaven. Their children, the giants or Nephilim, would be called evil and were to be destroyed. Lastly, Enoch was told to say to the Grigori: (3) [...]'"You have been in heaven, but all the mysteries had not yet been revealed to you, and you knew worthless ones, and these in the hardness of your hearts you have made known to the women, and through these mysteries women and men work much evil on earth." (4) Say to them therefore: "You have no peace."' The entire Book of Enoch is actually very fascinating, and the tale of the Grigori and Nephilim is only a small part of it. I hope this answered your question. =) Cheers, - --- ============================================================ Jonathan McDermott http:\\caraig.home.mindspring.com - ------------------------------------------------------------ "And now I feel that... feel that I've been there. Likewise, these demons must never act in such a way as to halt or restrict the progress of a disease. (It is theorised that Saminga was once a Servitor of Disease, and that it was from this period that he was inspired to create his dissonance conditions. No-one knows for certain if this is true or not. Very few demons payed any attention to the pitiful Shedite before he became a Prince, and no-one has dared to ask him since.) Band Attunements Balseraph (Restricted) Balseraphs of Disease add their Celestial forces to any Resonance roll which involves the topic of diseases. This includes making the target think that they or someone else has a disease, convincing them that a (usually hazardous) activity will cure an illness, etc. Djinn (Restricted) A Djinn serving Makatiel may choose to make his attuned immune to the effects of all diseases, though they remain infected, and infectious. This is most commonly used to create carriers, though it has been used to keep a temporarily-useful human alive on a few occasions. The Djinn may invoke and revoke this immunity at will, but if he fails in an attempt to remove an attunement, then the target gains this power for the duration of the attunement, regardless of the Djinn's wishes. (This is based on the Djinn of Disease description given in the Liber Servitorum [?]) Calabim Calabim of Disease make for wicked opponents, as every wound they inflict on an opponent becomes infected. Use the disease rules in Revelations 1 for this, with the disease having a cycle of 1 day, doing 1d-3 damage, and having a cycle of 1 month. The infection is mostly mundane, and so can be treated with Medicine as normal. Celestials in vessels are not affected by this Attunement, but Kyriotates and Shedim in hosts *are*. Obviously, leaving a host infected will cause a Hive to gain dissonance. Habbalah (Restricted) These angels are given the right to punish sinners, in the only way they know how. They may use their resonance to inflict a disease on a mortal, but only if they can denounce him as having "sinned". Luckily, the only person they have to convince of this is themselves. The disease inflicted has a 1 hour cycle, a 1 week term, and does 1d damage. It is not contagious, though the Virulence Attunement may be later used on it. It manifests as a fever, combined with coughing, shivering and rashes. Should a Habbalite using this power choose to suffer the effects of a resisted Resonance roll instead of taking a note of dissonance, then they suffer the full effects of the disease as described above, even if they change or possess vessels. However, time passes for the term even if they are on the Celestial realm. Lilim (Restricted) Very, very few Daughters serve Disease, as explained under "Relations", below. Almost all of those that do are fugitives from Lilith, and are hence mistrusted by their sisters. Anyone successfully resisting a Geas from these demons must immediately make a Strength +2 roll: if they fail, he or she comes down with a common, contagious and airborne disease of the Lilim's choice. This disease may be treated normally. (from Moe Lane's Yumiko) Shedim (Restricted) Shedim may come unto their hosts in the likeness of a disease, corrupting body rather than soul. In such a case, the demon takes on the likeness of an affliction, and the host becomes weak, sickly and feverish, losing 1d-3 Body Hits each day of the possession. While the Shedite manifests in this way, it need not mentaly corrupt its host, but it is gains Phantom Discord. Treat this as Aura, at a level equal to the demons Corporeal Forces. The Shedite must choose which approach (physical or spiritual) it wants to take at the moment of possession, and it cannot change from one to the other once it has entered the host. Should the host die from the illness caused by the Shedite, it causes a disturbance as normal. Impudites (Restricted) Makatiel's Takers may suck Essence from any sick being without having to first Charm them, though physical contact must still be made. Even a mild cold is enough to allow this. This also works on Celestials suffering from a disease, such as those targeted by Mens Insana, or Kyriotates and Shedim targeted by the Calabim of Disease Attunement. Note that sick mortals tend to use their Essence trying to heal themselves, and so very rarely if ever have more than 1 point. Servitor Attunements Mark of Pestilence -This Attunment only costs 5 character points!- It is well known that sigils and scripts have power within them, and that the placing of such a symbol can have a dramatic effect on events. Belial's Djinn are a prime example of this. Likewise, a demon with this Attunement has been thought how to craft a sigil which will inflict ill health on any human nearby. While this is a useful, if somewhat minor charm in itself, the true power of this Attunemnt comes from the fact that others can be thought how to craft the symbol. A demon with this Attunement may spend half an hour to teach it to a number of people eqaul to twice his Ethereal Forces. Note that unless the targets are Demons or Soldiers they cannot teach it to others. Also note that someone thought this need _not_ know what it is, or even that it is anything other than a decorative symbol. Anyone in proximity with the symbol (including Soldiers creating it!) will be effected as though they have Flu. It is theorised that the symbol is in fact part of the Helltounge script for one of Makatiel's other titles, but this is unknown, particualry, nowadays. Of all Makatiel's Attunements, this is the one most likely to still be known. Mens Insana This was the final Attunement created by Makatiel, thought to a very, very few of his highest-ranking Servitors. To use it, a demon must target a normal disease with a Resonance roll. Success on this roll results in the disease mutating in the same way the Black Death did under Makatiel's hand. >From then on, the disease becomes twice as virulant as it previously was, and is now capable of infecting vessels. Anyone so afflicted takes a number of Soul hits per day equal to the CD of the Resonance roll, even if they leave the Corporeal realm. Nothing short of the direct influence of a Superior will remove the Mens Insana, or the afflicted may expose themselves to the Light of Heaven, which burns the infection away in a horribly painful manner. Divine Tethers are not sufficient for this, the target must actually enter Heaven. Lilim may not be granted this Attunement. - -- Final part comes on Friday... _____________________________________________ Free email with personality! And the rankings are, from least to greatest, the Succubi, the Incubi, the Fleshless, the Destroyers, the Djinn, the Balseraphim, the Knights, the Dukes, and the Princes. The Succubi appear in the form of young women, beautiful of body, who will answer your every fantasy. They are skilled in the arts of love, but the sorcerer must take care not to allow himself to be pleasured for an entire night, or he will surely perish. To summon one to you, place tall mirrors at every side of the binding pentacle, that she may gaze upon herself and grow aroused. Begin the incantation at sundown, when you have first seen Venus in the sky. Once you have acquired her, gaze not upon her face save in mirrors until you have gained her pledge that she will vanish at midnight with no further claim upon you or your seed. Thus can you save your life from her wiles. Incubi manifest as handsome young men, smiling and eager. Theirs is the power to cause love, which they will use in your behalf if first they may visit the desired love in her (or his) dreams. Place within the binding pentacle a young woman clothed in silk, whose blood flowed at the new moon. She must have been untouched and unseen for a week, keeping vigil through the nights and protected from the sun by drapes of black velvet. She must have drunk of poppies, and be in a waking dream. Once the Incubus has tasted of her, he will do your bidding. The Fleshless must not be gazed upon in their true forms, lest they drive men mad. They are demons most powerful and subtle, who can draw any other mortal to your side and make them do your bidding. To summon one, seek a child of your bloodline, no less than five years of age and no more than sixteen, pure and untouched in body. With the sacrificial child bound inside the pentacle, blindfold yourself and summon the demon, who will possess the sacrifice. Once you have caused its desires to be satisfied within the sacrifice, you may bargain with it for the power over others that you wish. Demons of entropy and pain, the Destroyers will seek to have you break the circle in fear, appearing in their true forms of bat-winged satyrs, dripping with blood or with a stench of sulfur. Inscribe the binding pentacle thrice-over, and encircle yourself within another. Upon your person, carry white silk squares a handspan wide, which have been soaked with perfume of cloves and roses. Place within the pentagram six small animals, bound that they cannot escape, as sacrifice. You must only summon these demons when you wish something to be destroyed within the night, or they will surely escape and seek your death. The Djinn of Arabia are slow of words, but deep of thought, their forms thick and brutish. They desire comforts, so place within the pentacle soft cushions of velvet, and robes of silks and satins. Also leave wines and rich foods, with rosewater that they may dip their fingers within. Perfume the room with pleasing scents. Once the demon has partaken of your offerings, extend your left hand within the pentagram, and say, "Dark Lord, I will be yours. With your touch, I will serve you with my body." Once the demon has touched you, you must obey its next command to give it ease, but thereafter it shall be required to grant you three boons. Be warned that they are cunning, and the sorcerer must invoke the name of Allah to acquire the boons -- further, they will seek to pervert your words, so be wary. The Balseraphim are the Most Wise, whose words are like honey. Lean and perfect in form, with flowing hair, they can speak and stars will fall like diamonds into their hands, out of love for their perfect voices. Should you need one to speak on your behalf, in Hell or on Earth, lay out the binding pentacle and within place rare books encircled with gold and silver chains twisted together like water. If you desire knowledge, you must mark the pentagram in wine, leaving a glass within for the demon. The Knights are commanders of great armies in Hell, and you may summon them when you have need of their strength, for they delight in slaughter and rapine. Mark the pentacle with candles within and without, that it blaze like a ring of light. Place within the pentacle three fine weapons, and bind a young man and woman within, whose eyes have been closed with a paste of honey and cloves. These are the sacrifices, and you must bid the Knight be free with whatever is within the pentacle. Once he has accepted or rejected the offerings, you may state your desires of him. The Dukes rule many Knights and slaves within Hell, and can bring you news of your enemies -- or information tormented from them. They are summoned as are the Knights, but you must ensure that the weapons are the finest quality, with jewels and gilding, and that the humans are without flaw. Further, place exquisite clothing within that is pleasing to the eye and touch. Speak your desires in soft, sweet tones, as requests, for the Dukes are fond of flattery and will not be commanded. Do not break the binding pentacle for any reason, for these demons are powerful and will kill you without thought. The Princes are varied and subtle, and each Prince or Princess of Hell requires a separate ceremony. The Angels of God's Punishment may also be called when you have need. Most beautiful and puissant, they will not abide crawling or weakness. Kneel and lower your eyes to show respect, but do not prostrate yourself or yield when they test you. Call them when a demon has escaped you, or refuses to do your bidding, invoking them within a pentacle which contains instruments of punishment and a bowl of a predator's blood and wine. If the demon you seek to smite with God's wrath has escaped, you must provide some piece of it -- blood or hair or spittle. They will then lash the demon into obedience, wherever it may be. Should an Angel of Punishment find you pleasing, it is the greatest honor -- but do not fail the tests, for if you show yourself unworthy, the Angel will scourge you. These Angels are the only beings of Heaven which may be called by a sorcerer, for the others will strike down any who dare to invoke them, coming upon wings of deathly black, with fiery swords in their hands. - --Beth, typing w/a uncoopertive baby (iolanthe) causing typos. arcangel is nursing a trout with ARMS! I figured that the competition was developed to weed out the stupid. Although what you suggested could be humorous... CUT TO BALSERAPH of Theft kneeling before LUCIFER, who is looking mildly amused. LUCIFER And what would you ask of me, young one? BALSERAPH Dark Lord, I ask for the Word of Hackers LUCIFER grins and touches the forehead of the demon Very well. Your Word is Hackers. LUCIFER vanishes in a puff of smoke. BALSERAPH stands up. He has a look of ecstacy on his face from the power flooding him. CUT TO Distance Shot. BALSERAPH is suddenly ripped apart and Soul Killed in a rather messy fashion. CUT TO office setting. BEDEUL is looking outside the window with a pair of binoculars. Next to him is an OFFICE WORKER who is possessed by ORC ORC Well? BEDEUL Not bad. Bit off center with the impact though.
