If you aren't a superior, you don't get them. Is that it? Or, like most rules, is it more complicated once you look hard? I'm scratching around with ideas for a few Angels who would never be Superiors - Mathematics and Cricket, at the present - but who would have long-lived and significant Words, and places where Very Important Things have happened, and are perceived as having happened by humans who are interested in the subject. That sounds like Tether material. One might say that they form Tethers to the encompassing Superior word, and the management of these Tethers might well be delegated to an underling's organisation. That sounds OK, but what happens if such an underling does become a Superior? Do the upper ends of the tethers move across Heaven? Is this a meaningful question anyway, given heaven's, err, interesting dimensionality? Or do non-Superior words sometimes form Tethers, but never permanent ones? Just felt like it, I suppose. :) Moe Superior Relics of Yves Oddly enough, the Archangel of Destiny is almost as bad as Eli is when it comes to leaving Superior-level relics lying around. Then again, maybe not: Yves is a very busy entity, and getting along in years, so it's not too surprising that he might accidentally put something down then 'forget' about it. There's an entire squad of Shepherds whose only job is to track down errant personal items of the Archangel of Destiny; whether or not they decide to try to immediately get them back, once found, is pretty much determined by circumstances. Yves' missing knickknacks have an uncanny ability of going where they're most needed... Note that Yves will never be without an infinite number of backups to the below relics. Glasses Yves' Glasses allow the wearer to see the 'threads that link Destiny to Destiny' (to quote one temporary holder). In other words, if a particular person's Destiny is tied in with someone else's, the wearer will be able to see that ... and, theoretically, trace the normally invisible thread that links the two. Yves does this out of unconscious habit: everyone else makes a Tracking roll. Also, wearing this relic will allow the user to 'tune in', as it were, to the Symphony itself: by paying attention to the delicate harmonies, he or she will be able to act more effectively. This is good for a +2 to Role rolls, and a -4 to any Disturbance generated. Unfortunately, should any demon put this item on, he will find it impossible to take off ... and that the volume control on the Symphony is broken. The wild music will get louder and louder and louder until it either overcomes the demon's personal Symphony or implodes the poor unfortunate's head. The only defense against this is either lots and lots of distracting sensory input, or else complete and total sensory isolation ... but even then, at best the demon has a total of (Will x 4) weeks before the final crisis hits. Flip-up Sun Shades These relics pop a lot (relatively speaking): apparently, Yves is still getting used to having them. To operate, they must be over a standard pair of glasses - they'll adjust to fit - so that the wearer is seeing through them. When flipped down, the wearer is immune to all uses of a Balseraph and/or Habbalite resonance that come from a demon with a lower Will than the wearer. Add one to effective Will (on either side) for each Attunement or Distinction possessed. Cigarette Pack of Yves This relic always seems to be between a third and a fifth full, but never gets any emptier. Smoking one of Yves special blend of cigarettes is worth a +4 towards invoking him. Those who abuse the privilege will have to hand the relic over very quickly. Aside from that, well, they're the best cigarettes that you'll ever smoke, and they won't have any effect on a human's health. In fact, smoking one will soothe all pain and suffering for about ten minutes or so. Argyle Socks Well, even Archangels have personal lives. The Argyle Socks of Yves are imbued with the natural charisma of their owner: anyone wearing them will never fail a reaction roll involving human beings. Celestials, however, will probably raise a few eyebrows on precisely how one acquired such an item - but will react at +2 to the wearer, even then. After all, the wearer obviously has at least one powerful... friend. ===== Liber Licentiae Moeticae: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Last updated 11/13/01(this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? We all know about the concept of Word-Victory, when one word comes to dominate the world (eg, if Technology and Factions stage a joint victory, what you get is the world of _Paranoia_). But some words would seem to have the seeds of a possible defeat implicit in them too. The well-known example is Baal: he knows he's in trouble if The War ever ends, because it's his Word, and that's one major reason for him to not kick it off, even if he thinks he can win. He needs to keep it going forever to carry on enjoying his life; stalemate is by far the safest way to ensure that. But some other words have the potential to backfire as well. Dark Humour, for example, if one can persuade Kobal to laugh until he dies ("laugh his head off", in the British idiom). The Word would support that, and self-terminate - it's irony, really. So Kobal has to be very jaded, and not get any fun out of his Word: a feedback loop of irony, really. Andre knows that falling in love would wreck him, and makes sure that he can't; Hagenti might suffer badly if everyone on Earth was well-fed and happy with their lot. But some words - say, Factions and Nightmares - seem to be permanent. So, I declare a Christmas competition for the best fable for newly-made relievers. How might a Demonic word be most readily made self-defeating? Belial's Victory(?) Well, he did it. The Cuban Missile Crisis, the SALT talks, heck, the break up of the Soviet Union all seemed to show that a Third World War just wasn't going to happen. And then... it did. Nobody thought to where the USSR's nuclear weapons had gone to. Everybody, in the west at least, seemed to think the world situation was just peachy. All it took was one madman, a 'dirty bomb' and a bad decision from NORAD. And Belial just laughed his infernal butt off. He came up to Earth when it began, the first strike was stabilized as a tether almost immediately. The other's soon followed. Eventually, Belial noticed that entire nations were starting to come under his domain as the nuclear fire burned away entire land masses. It was a sweet victory for him. But the best was yet to come. He met HER a few days after the first strike. His power was growing geometrically, HER's was starting to slide on the same scale. When the sun was blackened out SHE appeared, ready at last to throw herself at him in a final suicidal frenzy. Belial was amused that just before he started burning away HER celestial forces, she became a hideous bat winged creature. It didn't stop him, but it did bring a slight smile to his face. With the source of his years of annoyance gone, he finally accepted full control of the word of Fire. And for a week he reigned supreme. No one could possibly challenge him. Not even Saminga. The world was finally on fire. And then it stopped. When the world's shattered governments finally ran out of nuclear weapons to toss at one another, the Earth was a mess, but as every science-fiction reader will tell you, it doesn't end there. The skies, after boiling with radioactive heat, had finally cooled down and were almost a solid mass of darkness. No light was shining through to the Earth. Belial laughed, though even to him it was sounding a bit hollow, and tried to journey to HER former tether, in the Sun. He couldn't. The tether had been destroyed when SHE was soul-killed. He hadn't taken the tether then... and now he had no way of getting there. Then he noticed the effect on the Earth. There was no more fire. Nuclear winter had begun to settle in, slowly freezing the Earth. Belial clutched to his suddenly dissipating word-forces, realizing that he had to find some means of bolstering his power. He realized there was still fire, deep within the Earth. This was fine for him, but he had to convince others of this, convince them to seek it out, to survive and use it. He had to inspire humans. Belial traveled over the Earth until he found one settlement, a group of people struggling to live in the wasteland that was once Iceland. He showed them the hot springs, showed them what that there was still hope, still life for them to live. Showed them that fire still existed and that the cold wouldn't be forever. But the people took little notice, too wrapped up in the end of the world they couldn't see that there was a reason to go on with life. And so, frustrated by their lack of interest in going on, Belial incinerated them. When the last one died, Belial realized that he was alone. Alone on an Earth that could no longer support life. Alone with no one caring about his precious Word. No one caring about Fire. And as his last Word-force disentegrated, and his soul with it, Belial found himself, for the first time in 20,000 years, crying. And as his last celestial force broke apart, Belial's last thought... running over and over in his mind... was of a wheel of fire, forever turning in the warm light of Heaven. The TV set blinked a couple of times; the man in the apartment banged it. “Bloody atmospherics” he muttered. “Hurricane Bob continues to scourge the eastern seaboard, the national guard has been put on full alert as looters continue to perform smash and grab raids on shops and abandoned homes as the residents flee the coast, more news as we receive it” “Rerek, Tiamat, Vritra, These are your names.” The deep smooth voice of Lucifer spoke from behind valefore. He clapped twice and a pain stung through the thing on the floor, the once archangel, and now demon prince. No, not a pain, but a sudden clarity. Valefore helped the creature up from its place on the floor. “Welcome home my brother. Lilim Tempters of Chaos are able to lower the level of the geas hook they have on someone providing they can get that person to bring a group of friends with him when the favour is called in. (They are the promulgators of riots.) Impudites Takers of Chaos gain a level 2 role as a Local Hero who believes the people should have more of a say in matters. With the aid of balseraph spokesmen whole crowds of passive and gentle people have been roused to acts of violence and demonstration against the -status quo-) Shedim Corrupters of Chaos can go days in a host with out having it perform a bad act providing they are able to convince one of the host’s closest friends to perform the act instead. Haagenti is the most miserable demon in Hell. Or at least he thinks he is. Very few remember that between his graduation to demon-hood and his rise to Princedom he had gained a Word. It was cruel of that bastard to give it to him, but he figured everyone else gave him the short end of the stick, why should the Boss do any differently. Early on, Haagenti had been the Demon of Starvation. Along with the Word his ability to consume had been taken away. Everything he puts in his mouth looks as if it’s been eaten. For the most part it has, but only Haagenti and Lucifer know that none of it reaches his belly, and only Lucifer himself knows where all that stuff goes. Barely given a cursory glance everyone quickly forgot about Haagenti and his new Word. On top of this lack of attention and respect Haagenti himself had trouble understanding and spreading his Word. He was always so hungry, there was no time to make others feel that way. As things worked out, people were always starving. Haagenti never had to lift a finger. So he concentrated more on his career and secret starvation. Time passed and he devoured those who got in his way. Eventually, he even got a new Word, along with his Princedom. But Lucifer never took the old Word away. Haagenti doesn’t even know if it’s possible to have two Words, but he does. He’s hoping that if he neglects Starvation enough it’ll just die off. He wishes Gluttony to be his sole purpose, and to everyone it appears to be. Deep down, he knows he’s only trying to feed his eternal hunger. If memory serves, to stabilize a Tether one must put Forces into it; since only Superiors can juggle Forces like that, only they can stabilize a Tether. Still, they might be able to stabilize it in such a way that it is slightly more "in tune" with the Word-bound in question; especially possible if it's expected the Word-Bound will probably become a Superior in their own right soon and could then take over the Tether (obviously more likely to happen with Heaven than Hell, although even a Demon Prince who's given up on crushing such a powerful subordinate might do something similar in order to at least stay on the soon-to-be Superior's good side (and maybe with an understanding about using the Tether or some other service later)). But no mere Word-Bound, even a powerful one, could make a Tether on their own; the Word would always effectively default to the Superior who has to stabilize it. - -- Mike Bruner-- mbruner18@home.com I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once. ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #2483 ********************************
