If your campaign centers around humans and their actions then either the Elizabethan or Renaissance settings would be the best choice as these were interesting times mostly for humans (as there are no big Celestial changes going on). If your campaign centers around angels/demons and their actions then I would choose the Roman Empire setting as it involves Uriel and that alone makes for some interesting Celestial situations. In a Renaissance setting I would go with the "Dumas" look (Three Musketeers, Man in the Iron Mask). Emphasise romance, heroic duels, and much high-level plotting and backstabbing. You can take the Church/King as the primary Bad Guy (manipulated by Malphas with the help of Kronos) and some Revolutionaries (e.g. Musketeers/Soldiers of God) as the Good Guys (Laurence (honor is very important) - David (one for all and all for one)). Demon PC's would maybe go about helping the Church and making sure there is enough backstabbing going on in high level politics. Angel PC's could try to help the "common man" by sabotaging the actions of the Infernals. Throw in some (manipulating) damsels in distress (Lilim?), much chandelier-swinging, the Bastille, evil Cardinals, plenty of intrigue at the King's court and you have enough material for an interesting campaign. IN7S needs piracy to work, though I admit that you could put it all on Valefor. Anyone care to write up the Demon of Pirates? You've got a choice of Princes to put him under; Theft, Oceans, Greed, Freedom and Rapine all work. Even Dark Humor, if you include the Pirates of Penzance. 0:> ===== Michael Walton, #9805-068 "It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor." -- Seneca __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Nope - Secret Songs need to stay Secret, and that means not using them where other people can hear them. Mind you, I should point that out in the attunement. Granted, but as that would cost 80 essence just to get, plus the ongoing costs & then usage costs, I can't see that happening. And of course, it's not so different from contacting angels of those Words and inviting them along - the attunement is merely meant to allow you to 'eliminate the middle man'. Mind you, multiple attunements is a problem - I'll tweak the attunement so that only one benefit can be gained at a time. Fortunately for Jordi, most demonic Words focus on humanity, so his animals travel below Hell's radar for the most part. However, there is one Demon Princess who can get a great deal out of the suffering of animals - Beleth. The higher animals have individual dreamscapes, making them targets for Nightmares. Although they may not seem worth the effort, there are a number of reasons why Beleth would take the time to terrorise animals: 1) Essence. A dog is as good an essence battery for her Impudites as a mundane human; better in fact, because of it's lower Ethereal & Celestial Forces. Drawing large numbers of animals into Beleth's realm allows the Impudites to farm the animals - herds of animals, sleeping in slaughter pens, would tend to end up in Beleth's March anyway, simplifying this. 2)Dreamshades. Because animals don't go to Hell (barring extremely unusual circumstances) mass creation of animal dreamshades will not attract hostility from the other DP's - on the contrary, many will approve, especially her ally Kronos. These dreamshades can be harvested for essence, broken down for Forces, sold to Ethereal as Servants, or even used as guards. Impudites & Habbalah would be the best bands for this task - possession of a Lucid Dreaming talisman would simplify the task immensely. An animal can be trained while alive - the demon could use the Ethereal Song of Projection (which every Impudite of Nightmares should have) to project predators into the dreamscapes of prey animals - the ethereal 'death' of the prey animal gives it an Ethereal Disadvantage and makes the predator more loyal to the demon. 3) Servants. The ability to control an animals nightmares makes them easy to cow, and so to control. Also, control of certain animals, say an unkindness of ravens, simplifies the task of crafting a 'living Nightmare' in the Corporeal. Nor is this training wasted, as the animals will later be become dreamshades. 4) Freedom of action. It doesn't matter if animals know that demons abound - they can't reveal the War to humans. True, the demons need to be sure word won't get back to one of Jordi's angels, but otherwise, they can revel in their supernatural abilities. 5) Jordi. Beleth wants everyone and everything to fear her, and that includes Jordi. Secure in The Marches, with Jordi's animals travelling into her realm every night, it wouldn't be difficult for Beleth to make Jordi afraid of her. Jordi would see this as a dominance fight, and back down, realising that he was outclassed - so long as he was (for the most part) left alone. Beleth would realise that she can only possess his fear if she doesn't push him to far, and so would decline to break sleeping animals down for their Forces so long as Jordi didn't challenge her. Of course, each Band of Beleth's demons would react to animals in a different way. Her Balseraph's would mostly consider animals 'beneath their notice' - it sounds better than admitting that they can't normally use their resonance on the dumb animals. However, using their resonance when saying "bad dog!" to a well behaved pet would provide some minor entertainment, while many would demand a dreamshade horse to ride around The Marches, to prove that they're royalty. Beleth's Djinn - when they can be bothered - would have terrified animal Servants, using their band attunement to ensure obedience. When the Djinn loses interest, the animal can be handed over to a Habbalite or Impudite to be trained for becoming a Dremashade. Also, the Djinn could 'nobble' guard dogs by Pavlovian training in their Nightmares - if a guard dog believes that it will be eaten alive by maggots if it barks at the Djinn, the Djinn will be able to break into anything the dog is guarding with ease. This, of course, is going to upset the dog's owner, likely resulting in more nightmares for the dog - and possibly for the owner. Calabim will mostly enjoy the ability to use their resonance on animals without fear of discovery. Of course, the low hit points of most animals limits the usefulness of a direct attack - accidentally killing the beastie doesn't help Nightmares and creates more disturbance - however repeatedly detonating the ground under an animals feet guarantees hours of fun. Their band attunement may also provide entertainment, especially for horrors which a human would be able to warn others of, but an animal cannot. Habbalah are the most common Band among Beleths' demons, an important point given the usefulness of both their resonance and Band attunement against animals. Habbalah would use animals as 'stun batteries' - their low Will men they will not resist the demon's resonance, so the demon can stun an animal with a slap, and then move the stun back and forth between two animals until it lasts for hours. If the emotion is love, then the animal will (once asleep) enter Beleth's march due to the stun and wish to serve the demon - the perfect servant. Habbalah would enjoy training attack animals - a dog trained to savage humans in The Marches will cause Ethereal Disadvantages in it's victims - and you wondered why so many people have Fear(dogs)! - and be ready to rend in the defence of Beleth's Tethers. As animals do not cause disturbance, this would allow the demon to hurt humans with less risk of discovery - in both realms. Lilim - although sensing an animals Needs can occasionally be useful, there isn't much that an animal can offer a Lilim that a human can't top. Also, the difficulty in explaining to the animal what the Lilim wants limits the usefulness of their resonance and attunement. Shedim - Animals provide Shedim with the joy of simple terror. A Shedite can Celestially 'buzz' a herd of animals, stunning all who sense it and probably starting a stampede. Of course, if a Cherub of Animals is attuned to even one of the animals, the Shedite is going to be ambushed Celestially...ouch. Smarter Shedim would only use this trick at slaughter houses, as no Cherub would dare be attuned to an animal about to be killed. Of course, the angels know this, and Jordi is bound to have Malakim (or better yet, 8 Force relievers with no Corporeal Forces) watching over the herds. Impudites - 'Farmer' sounds a little bit better than 'leech', so the nickname wouldn't raise many hackles. Teaching animals the basics of Lucid Dreaming - preferably with the aid of a Talisman - removes the need to enter the animals Dreamscape, and ensures that they'll stick around after their corporeal deaths. Over the centuries, they would create huge herds of animals, kept in domains in Beleth's realm and continuously stripped for essence. The more interesting animals would become Servants, and those inclined to leave would be stripped for Forces. Powerful Takers would roam The Marches, riding on horseback, surrounded by hunting hounds - or wolves - or boars - or wolverines; maybe even bears... The Celtic pantheon might have *one* version of The Wild Hunt, and the Fay courts another, but neither would have anything on the Impudites. One possible change is to make her Word more metaphorical. For example, Laurence is the AA of the Sword rather than the AA of Honor. In the story the cats of Earth are the protectors of the Earth's Dreamlands and they fight especially against the cats of Saturn. The Dreamland's powerbase for Earth's cats is the city of Ulthar. Maybe something similar can be done in In Nomine. Maybe domestic cats were created by Jordi for the purpose of protecting the dreamscapes of animals from demons. It would explain why domestic cats sleep 23 hours a day and look haughty and divine to humans. Maybe that is why they were holy animals for the Egyptians and were hunted down by the Church (Malphas) during the Dark Ages. Taking the ball of 'AU Zadkiel as former Servitor of Michael' and running with it: I don't quite see Michael resenting Laurence in this manner... and between Michael not really feeling the *need* for a shield maiden (he is the archetypical Lone Warrior, after all) and the fact that he thinks Laurence can use all the help he can get, I don't quite see this reaction either. Most likely something more on the order of "OK then. Make sure you keep him straight, OK? And if you see anything that you're really worried about, slip me a note." Whether he was upset at her leaving or glad that Laurence would be getting somebody who could be in a position to teach him more Michaelite thinking, either way Michael is not the kind of guy who burns bridges unless he has to.
