What are the Seven Deadly Sins? Pope Gregory the Great (d. 604) described Seven Deadly Sins in his Moralia in Job. 1. Superbia Pride 2. Invidia Envy 3. Ira Anger 4. Avaritia Avarice 5. Tristia Sadness 6. Gula Gluttony 7. Luxuria Lust (Moralia in Job, XXXI cap. xlv). The sin ‘Tristia…trade; was later replaced by ‘Accidia…trade;, or Sloth (Wenzel (1967), 38). This sin was taken from earlier catalogues of vice, in particular, the eight evil thoughts listed by Evaagrius (346-99), and the eight principal vices proposed by the mid fourth-century writer Cassian (Wenzel (1967), 14-21). Some of the iconography of the Sins was derived from the descriptions of the Battles between the Virtues and Vices in the Psychomachia by the fourth-century poet Prudentius. 2. Why were they called ‘Deadly…trade;? The church made a division between sins which were venial and could be forgiven without the need for the sacrament of Confession and those which were capital and merited damnation. Capital or Deadly Sins were so called because they could have a fatal effect on an individual…trade;s spiritual health. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Jan 2002 11:23:22 -0500 From: Earl Wajenberg Subject: Re: IN> The Seven Deadly... Even among angels, Alisandra's considered a bit of a fruitcake. Originally a Servitor of Flowers, the gentle Cherub became associated with Dreams when she protected a field of young lettuce from the ravages of a bunny-vesseled Calabite of Gluttony. She lost her vessel that day, much to Novalis's chagrin, but at least the lettuce was saved -- and were grateful to her, according to the confused-looking Menunite dispatched by Blandine. She was invited to visit the Archangel of Dreams as a reward. Upon reaching the top of the Tower of Dreams, Alisandra looked out over the Vale, and was awed at the sight of the many dreamscapes which had gathered under the watchful eyes of Blandine's angels. Upon closer inspection, however, she discovered that Heaven was keeping watch over only the human dreamscapes -- many of the animal and plant dreamscapes were being allowed to wander as they pleased, often into Beleth's side of the Marches. "This can't be," she moaned, and Blandine understood her pain. Novalis was loath to let go of one of her Servitors, especially a Distincted one, but eventually an accord was reached and Alisandra was permitted to work in the Marches. Much to her surprise, Alisandra found life in the Marches far more suitable to her temperament than life on Earth. She walked alone when she wished to, and with other angels when she needed company. But her methods were still strange, and more often than not she found herself shunned by Blandine's angels for her insistence that the plants' dreamscapes were just as important as the humans'. When she became skilled at sculpting dreams she earned a new name among the Dreamwalkers, "The Green Woman". Eventually she found acceptance even among Blandine's Malakim, who began to respect her after she convinced a Balseraph of Nightmares to release a plant dreamscape that had strayed to Beleth's side of the Marches. In time, Blandine granted her a Distinction to match the one she'd been granted by Novalis, in recognition of her work. She received her Word after centuries more of hard work. Both Cherub Archangels sponsored her for it in a rare show of cooperation among Superiors. Novalis has gone on record to say that she will not transfer Alisandra to Blandine's service; Blandine, on the other hand, clearly has hopes that her fellow Cherub will change her mind. Alisandra doesn't really care either way; she's found a place in the world for herself, and it doesn't involve getting swarmed over by hordes and hordes of demons in rabbit vessels. As unofficial envoy to the ranks of Dreams, Alisandra knows more about the Marches than most of Novalis's angels. She makes a useful NPC to know, and despite a nasty tendency to mutter distractedly about Calabim in bunny suits, she is actually easy to talk to. PCs who encounter her should, however, beware that she doesn't drag them into all sorts of misadventures involving nonhuman vessels and young plant life... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Jan 2002 11:33:31 +1100 From: "james walker" Subject: Re: IN> The Sephiroth "My dear brother..." I had the scene all picked in my mind, too, taking place when he asks Lucifer for the Word of Rock and Roll: "You desire WHAT word?" Lucifer looked directly into his eyes, showing a degree of loathing not seen in a long time. "I will give you a Word. You are now the Prince of Wrath. Do not waste any more of my time. I imagine you need to prepare youself." You see, ol' Lucifer gave him that Word, figuring that Belial would almost certainly be gunnning after him, knowing full well who would win that confrontation. If by some freak occurance Furfur won, then it helps keep that precarious political destabilzation going. If not, he's an object lesson to demons everywhere: Don't Waste My Time. That's now what we use vessels for, mister!" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jan 2002 20:34:32 -0800 (PST) From: Maurice Lane Subject: IN> Echoes I got the idea for this while playing in my Sunday game: unfortunately, I can't quite remember which ones were originally my idea and which ones were suggested to me (although I remember that Michael's was suggested by Casca). Oh, well, I'm sure that I'll know by the time it gets to my webpage. :) Note: the below assumes that angels are good, demons are bad and the universe concurs... Moe Echoes These items have a very specialized origin: they appear as the result of any entity's soul-death on the corporeal plane. As far as anyone can tell, Echoes are the vestiges of the unique components of the slain entity's soul, transmuted into a corporeal form that evokes his, her or its life and tasks. If a Remnant is created at the same time, the Echo will materialize around or on it. Echoes are sought out for two reasons: first, they have certain uses in Sorcery. In general, an authentic Echo should give a +1 to Alchemy or Enchantment rolls, or +2 to Summoning, provided that the Echo is of the proper Word or Band. A successful use will destroy the Echo. Second, priming an Echo with one Essence will essentially turn it into a relic/0, permitting it to be taken to the celestial plane. This may not seem too useful, except that, well, at least this way there's something to display on your wall ... or properly bury. Below are typical Echoes, grouped by Superior. As a general rule, angelic and human Echoes tend to be more poignant than demonic ones; the universe apparently has its own opinions over which deaths are to be celebrated, and which are to be mourned. Blandine A multicolored, abstract glass sculpture of heartbreaking beauty and poignancy: there will always be at least one flaw or crack. David Scattered fragments of a small stone statue that still give a hint of exquisite, delicate gracefulness. The harder and stronger the angel was in life, the more delicate the fragments. Dominic A broken and battered set of scales, found wrapped in a torn and crumpled fragment of black fabric. Eli A toy kaleidoscope: anyone who looks inside will find that the internal mirrors have been cracked. Gabriel A flickering, solid candle: if left alone, it will burn down and gutter out within an hour. The runners of wax will form an intricate interlocking spiral. Janus A neat heap of glittering sand: if outdoors, a breeze will form within five minutes that will cause it to spiral up into the sky until it is lost to view. Jean A small burned-out chip or motherboard that has been half-melted by a sudden surge of power: the Echo will always have the faintest smell of ozone about it. Jordi Small scraps of fur or scales or feathers (depending on the Choir), most of which are at least daubed with blood. Laurence Fragments of white silk and satin; the largest fragment will have a discolored red cross stitched upon it. Marc A sudden shower of tarnished, faded coins (of the lowest local denomination): there are always exactly one hundred and ninety-eight of them. Michael Dozens of empty bullet casings, laid out in a crude approximation of War's sigil. Novalis A small pile of blackened, dried flower petals: their scent is never the same twice. Yves Long strips of paper, torn from a book, woven into a checkerboard pattern and folded over: inside the impromptu folder can be found a scrap of parchment with a short musical phrase written upon it. Relievers The fragments of a powder-blue eggshell: the faint hint of incense and sandalwood clings to the Echo. Andrealphus Torn strips from what a pornographic magazine: the slightest breeze will scatter them in all directions. Asmodeus The remnants of a small notebook that was apparently set on fire: the writing inside will be perpetually just too faint or obscure to quite make out. Baal Any sort of weapon (usually the one favored by the demon in life): however, it will be damaged beyond hope of repair. Beleth A twisted, shattered figurine of sandstone or obsidian: an onlooker will still be able to make out features of unparalleled ugliness. Belial Four or five cinders of wood, cold to the touch: the slightest touch will turn them into a fine silvery ash, then mud. Haagenti A small paper bag that contains crumpled soda cans, balled-up fast food wrappers and empty condiment packages: if there is a garbage can within 5 yards of the Glutton's death, the Echo will materialize there. Kobal Several cheap novelties, all of which are no longer functional: especially common is a set of chattering teeth with a broken spring. Kronos A disassembled pocket watch: the glass face is cracked and there will always be too many pieces missing to reassemble the clock. Lilith A small scrap of paper with writing in ancient Hebrew upon it: the 'word' apparently inscribed there has no known meaning. This Echo always and only appears for Lilim, including Bright Lilim. Malphas Several different small items, all twisted together and fused (as if by some great heat). Nybbas A battered television set: the exact center of the screen will have a hole, apparently caused by the stone or brick inside. Saminga There is no physical Echo, per se - but something will grow on the spot, and will survive all attacks, poisons and attempts to kill it for the next year and a day. Valefor Echoes formed from the soul-death of a Servitor of Theft will always appear in another Diabolical form. There is no way to tell them apart from the genuine article. Vapula A rusty, pitted gear with broken teeth. Imps/Gremlins Fragments of pitted leather, scattered and slightly reeking of sulfur and brimstone. Humans Humans rarely die celestially on the corporeal plane: when one does, the nearest concave surface will be filled with a few ounces of clear, salty liquid. If unnoticed, this liquid will evaporate within a day. Saints A small urn or bag, full of a fine gray ash: the outside will have the sigil of the Saint's Superior inscribed upon it. Undead Nothing. Nothing at all. ===== Liber Licentiae Moeticae: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Last updated 01/01/02(this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Artifacts: All of the artifacts Caym gains from his Technology attunements have the following features: Require a 5-minute invocation before each use (-2), Very Fragile (-2), requires animal sacrifice (-1), Impossible to detect in the Corporeal realm (+5). Special Rites: Force an unwilling student to kill and dissect an animal; kill more than 20 animals by conducting experiments on them; keep an animal in Beleth's domain for more than 24 continuous hours; spend an hour defending experimentation on animals using unsound arguments; encourage an opponent of animal testing to use invalid arguments; destroy a mortal's plans to become a scientist by demoralising them with tales of animal testing; persuade a cruel human to enter a scientific career where they can conduct test on animals; 'prove' that a Hellish substance is harmless, or a heavenly one dangerous, using animal testing; persuade a host that a human experimental subject is subhuman/an animal [+3]. Additionally, Caym has traded rites with his friends: the demons of Vivisection, and of Medical Experimentation. Special Abilities: Caym may grant an experimental animal +3 Charisma towards one specific human; additionally he may perform an 'augury' on an animal, adding his Celestial forces to any attempts to predict the actions of an individual or effects of a chemical. Special Attunement: Fruits Of Torment - The subject of the Attunement becomes more susceptible to pain caused by scientific experimentation; the demons Corporeal Forces are reduced from the targets Will while the target is being experimented on. The penalty can be negated by spending essence; each point of essence spent reduces the penalty by 1. The spent essence goes to the demon, who may spend it on any knowledge, research or fast-talk roll related to the experiment - attempting to use the essence for any other purpose causes it to drain off harmlessly. One of Vapula's first WordBound, Caym has filled a fundamental role in Hells' plans for the corruption of science: persuading soft hearted humans to avoid studying the sciences and encouraging the more callous to do so, so as to 'push' the entire discipline closer to hell. Although he can only directly affect a few disciplines, notably biology chemistry and medicine; his work has helped to tarnish the reputation of science as a whole. Although many scientists have achieved their Destinies with the aid of animal experimentation, many more have avoided scientific careers all together, and have reincarnated several times, waiting the day when Caym has gone - or have met their Fates in the meantime. Because of this, Caym is high on destiny's hate list; and naturally, he is close to the top of Jordi's. Despite this, Caym has thrived, becoming a Department Head during WWII, when he was able to persuade both Hell and his mortal hosts that Mengeles and co. fell under his Word. Caym felt under-appreciated after the war, and choose to jump ship when Magog was released. With Magog's death, Caym has been rushing around trying to find a way to get himself back into Vapula's good books. Vapula has not chosen to look up his old Department Head; the only thing Caym is sure of is that his Department has been broken up and reassigned to other Department Heads. Meanwhile, Destiny and Animals are planning some payback.... ================================================================= Hmm, that took way to long to write - I'm out of practice. In any event, here's the URL of the digest with the writeup: http://www.sjgames.com/in-nomine/digests/2000/11/1-1898.txt Hope this helps. ;) Manny Neps http://www.geocities.com/angeloffools/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Jan 2002 14:48:59 From: "Charles Glasgow" Subject: Re: IN> Re: Echoes >From: ben@hiwaay.net >Reply-To: in_nomine-l@lists.io.com >To: in_nomine-l@lists.io.com >Subject: IN> Re: Echoes >Date: Wed, 09 Jan 2002 08:35:41 -0600 (CST) >Neat concept. Like you get when you sometimes *feel* something in a particular place with particularly potent associations, like at the sites of the former KZ in Germany where the air and earth alike just feel leaden and heavy and full of sorrow... Emotional traces of what the dying Superior felt in his or her last moments which affect those around the site. Like the concept of Themes in Liber Canticorum, only stronger. Maybe Symphonically sensitive beings might get the occasional flashback or vision there. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2002 10:23:09 -0800 (PST) From: Michael Walton Subject: Re: IN> Re: Echoes - --- ben@hiwaay.net wrote: > One wonders about the nature and potency > of Superior level > Echoes, such as those of Raphael or Legion. Seems to me the most notable thing the death of a Word-bound (especially a Superior) would leave behind is a vacuum. Sure, the Word would continue without a Celestial to oversee it, but that loss of active promotion is bound to make a difference in how the Word manifests on the Corporeal. For example, Raphael's Echo might very well have been a historical movement rather than an object, and it might have taken centuries to develop to its fullest -- if you call it the Dark Ages. ===== Michael Walton, #9805-068 "It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor." -- Seneca __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
