Re: IN> Jean: "Humans shouldn't have that yet." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 12:38:34 -0800 From: Vaughn Romero Subject: IN> Iron Rev found dead from apparent suicide AUSTIN, TX - Beloved list thread and In Nomine gaming trope, Iron Rev, was found dead in its e-mail server today in Austin, Texas from an apparent overdose of adventure seeds. In Nomine mailing list administrator Beth was the first to discover the body. "I logged in this morning to find my mailbox littered with bounced e-mail messages from his server. Normally I would have just deleted the messages as they were all encoded in HTML and well over the 10K limit, but something made me look at the Subject line. That's when I discovered his last Iron Rev entry." Police have yet to release details of the apparent suicide note, but Beth revealed that the note had at least three seeds in it: Hell freezing over, a new enemy, and a new friend. List members were stunned to hear the news. "I just spoke to him last Thursday," confided list member Michael Walton. "He left me a message asking if I'd support a another Iron Rev contest, and I told him I would look for judges. He was really excited about the prospect of a reunion with his long time list buddies. When he never got back to me I just chalked it up to another slow posting week-end. I just can't believe he's gone." Iron Rev's demise was evidently a tragic end to a slow decline. "We hadn't heard anything from Rev since September. I think the whole 9-11 tragedy hit him really hard," explained Vaughn Romero. "It's really hard to hold a competition with in the new 'United We Stand' atmosphere. I thought I'd help him out, post a call for submissions for him, but he never got back to me with the seeds. I guess I know what he was doing with them now." Iron Rev's addiction to adventure seeds was well known by his friends and colleagues. Long time friend David Edelstein revealed that Iron Rev had recently started attending Adventure Seeds Anonymous. "I could see Iron had a problem. He was up to almost 5 entries every month at one point. A couple of us finally got together and confronted him on it. I volunteered to take him to some ASA meetings - I even volunteered to be his sponsor - but he just couldn't let go of that high." Despite the today tragic events, there are some who with doubts about Iron Rev's death. One list members who preferred to remain anonymous sees Iron Rev's disappearance as part of some marketing scheme. "He was an Ethereal! Ethereals don't die; they just fade away until someone dreams them up again. I think he just pulled an Elvis to get some publicity. It wouldn't surprise me if he made an appearance in that Anime thing they've got going now." Representatives at Steve Jackson Games made no comment to the allegations. However, SJG did reveal plans to post some of Iron Rev's entries in the In Nomine Collection as part of an ongoing memorial. "It's only fitting," said list administrator Beth. "He would have wanted those entries out there for people to read." Iron Rev is survived by his wife Heresy and their children Rules Clarification, Book Recommendations, Flame War, New Celestial, the twins New Attunement and New Relic, and their adopted child Fan Fiction. The Rev family would prefer to receive copies of the APG in lieu of donations. - - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - * - Reuters contributed absolutely nothing to this story. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 21:55:19 -0500 From: "Jeffrey Pawlowski" Subject: IN> SJG 3304? I don't see this book available anywhere. Is this book still available? I found some of my old In Nomine books from a moving box, and trying to trade/sell my MINT, in original shrinkwrap, 3304A and 3304Bs. What are these worth? I want to trade them to a good home instead of eBaying them. Anyone able to offer a full collection (with Masterbook and in good condition), no matter what they paid for them, will get priority over any monetary offers. One guy asked me if I'd trade, even if he found the collection at $50. The Indiana Jones books have real useable value to me. I've gotten a few very enticing offers already, for my set. If someone buys both, I'll toss in my 3301 softcover 1st edition rulebook, 3302 GM Screen, and 3303 Revelations I. No need to keep it if I send out all of my rulebooks :) I'd rather get these books into a fan's hands versus to a trader/seller. Any decent offer from this list gets priority over any other offers I get :) A dealer has already offered me $200 total for everything. I've sent him pictures of the books to verify their quality, and I will be happy to post close up detailed pics on the web for anyone how wants to see the books. That's right, artificial womb research is, in RL, proceeding ahead faster than most people would expect. Are humans ready for something like this? Who is to blame? Did the talking monkeys figure it out by themselves, or do we blame a celestial? If you use a typical Dark Lilith, she was OK with killing children to give freedom to the mothers, so she would most likely approve of something like this... Jean probably would be surprised that humanity is inventing this NOW. But maybe it's all a plot by ethereals spawned during the GURPS Vorkosigan playtest... Seems to me it would be prohibitively expensive. You pay more for a womb with a view. ===== Michael Walton, #9805-068 "In a world without women, what would men become?" "Scarce, ma'am. And these are *far* more controllable -- and they never go out, fall down, smoke, drink, or fail to eat right. More to the point, today's extremely expensive and rare luxury is next decade's middle-class option, and the decade after that's anybody-not-actually-sleeping-over-a-steam-grate-can-buy-one. Humans said that about fusion and jetcars too... but more seriously, note the big difference between keeping someone alive for nine months and having them fully developed and healthy after those nine months. Foetal development is far more than just a sack of tissue, nutrient feeds and waste disposal - babies learn the beginnings of language, motor skills, curiosity, self/other-awareness, play, emotional response, and other interactive traits while still inside the womb, due in part and assisted by the semi-chaotic external stimuli provided by the mother and world. > That's right, artificial womb research is, in RL, proceeding ahead faster > than most people would expect. Are humans ready for something like > this? Who is to blame? Did the talking monkeys figure it out by > themselves, or do we blame a celestial? I'd opine it's proceeding about par for human scientific advancement in the biological field. As to whether they're ready, there are other areas of far greater concern - weapons of mass destruction are becoming easier and cheaper to make or acquire, and there are significant groups of humans willing to use them to promote their sociopolitical agendas, in total disregard/ignorance of the consequences, that are already at or beyond the minimum level of capability necessary to deploy any such devices obtained. Meanwhile similar groups, though driven by fiduciary greed rather than quasi-religious fervor, are already mass-deploying genetically engineered biologicals in increasing quantities. It is most unfortunate that social sciences continue to lag behind the technical. On 11 Feb 2002, 10:44, Michael Walton wrote: > Seems to me it would be prohibitively expensive.
