Failure is typically normal, except that if the celestial failed by less than the level of the Discord, instead of a normal failure, the resonance simply doesn't go off. Even on a success, however, the check digit of the resonance roll is reduced by (the level of the Discord - 1). There are two quirks to the Discord, however, that make it noteworthy. First, the Discord doesn't operate at all in Heaven. All resonance rolls made there are normal (even for demons with this Discord who happen to show up). It works perfectly well in Hell, but not in the celestial locus of an Infernal Tether. Second, any failed resonance roll made while the Discord is active reduces the target number of the next resonance roll by one, in addition to the first effect. This is cumulative, up to -6 from this effect alone; failing the fifth resonance roll in a row with this Discord at level 6 means that the next resonance roll is at -12. There are two known ways to alleviate this effect: succeed at a resonance roll (which drops the penalty back to the level of the Discord), or spend time in Heaven or the lower locus of an Infernal tether (which reduces the penalty by 1 for every hour spent there). Note that while the Discord itself does not operate in these locations, this penalty for failure *does*. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Mar 2002 23:48:29 -0500 From: EDG Subject: IN> The Magnet The Magnet A half-baked adventure outline for angels or demons Typically, when one places a device into actual testing phases, one has thought of the obvious practical limitations to doing so. However, Vapula isn't exactly your typical scientist. The Punishing Prince has developed an electromagnet more powerful than any the world has seen since... well, the world. Magnet mk. XCII has several tens of thousands of square feet of surface area, is quite thin for its size - only a few feet - and has enough power behind it to levitate an oil tanker. From orbit. Which is, naturally, where he's put it. Oddly, there haven't been any reports of hovering tankers recently. In fact, Vapula put his Magnet into orbit, but facing outward. You see, getting ships out of the water without touching them sounded like a lot of fun, but one of the Prince's highly-placed servitors reminded him that he'd never really explored an asteroid, and, well, the rest is history. For what it's worth, Belial and Beleth are wholly behind this idea; the latter is still getting Essence from the "Lucifer's Hammer"-related craze, and the former thinks that dropping a ball of iron the size of Nebraska on the planet is a really good way to start a whole Hell of a lot of fires. Actually, Kobal's behind it too; see the next paragraph to find out why. Sadly, Vapula, being as he is, well, Vapula, decided that if he was going to study an asteroid, by God it was going to be the biggest one out there, and so he promptly focused the Magnet on Ceres, in the Mars-Jupiter asteroid belt. What Vapula had forgotten - and here are those practical limitations - was that Magnet mk. XCII massed significantly less than Ceres did, and when faced with the countless other asteroids in the same general area - well, the Magnet just wasn't up to the task of bringing everybody over for dinner. Thus, Magnet mk. XCII is now hurtling merrily toward the asteroid belt, where it likely faces doom as it crash-lands on any one of thousands of heavenly bodies. This is where the PCs show up. If the PCs are demons, then they've been volunteered to assist Technology. One of Vapula's underlings - in fact, the same one who proposed the "study an asteroid" idea in the first place - has been working on a shuttle that will allow celestials to travel in space for extended periods. Celestials have an obvious advantage over humans here - they don't need to eat or excrete, so there's a lot more space available for, say, hydroponics labs to produce breathable air - and they don't need to sleep, so they'll be alert (hypothetically) all the time. Plus, Technology can just drop the ship in orbit - no need for messy booster tanks and the like. Naturally, Calabim aren't invited on this trip. Which is why there'll be one on board, stowed away. Just to make for excitement during a trip that's likely to take weeks. Angelic PCs will have it a bit better; Jean knows how to think ahead. His spaceship has the same benefits as Technology's, but does them one better - it carries less air, and therefore more tools. How? The residents of the ship are in the modern equivalent of suspended animation - Body Bags. Their spirits are neatly tucked away inside a row of Force Catchers owned by the Kyriotate of Lightning possessing several key systems of the ship itself; when the ship reaches the Magnet, the Kyriotate will release the spirits from the Force Catchers, the bodies will reanimate, and work will commence. Naturally, the angels are going to be rather bored during the mission; fortunately, they have the souped-up version of Force Catchers, complete with Internet access and Playstation equivalent. Finally, the angelic ship is just a little faster than the diabolical one; if they leave at the same time, the angels will have maybe a day longer than the demons. Now, the objective of both teams is to stop Magnet mk. XCII from colliding with an asteroid and use their ship's boosters to shove it back toward Earth. The job will doubtless be easier if they work together, but one doubts the two teams will figure that out (allow the most intelligent member of the NPC team to make an Intelligence check; it's at a penalty equal to his Celestial Forces if the NPCs are Infernal). Really, there's not much to it; just negate the Magnet's momentum and reverse it. Once they've completed this, if they still have engines, cockpit pressure, and their sanity, they can head home as quickly as the ship will take them. Which is good, because they still need to *catch* the Magnet... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Mar 2002 21:01:01 -0800 (PST) From: Maurice Lane Subject: IN> New Servitor of Infernal Fire ...and I didn't even harm a hair on the bugger's head. I must be mellowing, or something. Moe Hamon Calabite Baroness of the Demonic Brazier Corporeal Forces: 6 Strength: 12 Agility: 12 Ethereal Forces: 6 Intelligence:12 Precision: 12 Celestial Forces: 6 Will: 12 Perception: 12 Vessel: none Skills: Artistry/6 (fire sculpture), Detect Lies/6, Dodge/6, Fighting/6, Knowledge (Belial's Organization/6, Sheol/6) Songs: Entropy (all/6, virtuoso), Feedback/6, Fire (all/6, virtuoso), Motion (Celestial/6), Numinous Corpus/6 (Living Flames), Shields (All/6) Attunements: Balseraph of Infernal Fire, Calabite of Infernal Fire, all of Belial's Servitor Attunements, Baroness of the Demonic Brazier Discord: Need/6 (Sheol's Fires) Even in Sheol, there must be a place that is hotter than anywhere else. Most assume that this place would be Belial's throne room: a natural assumption, but quite wrong. After all, the Prince of Infernal Fire must entertain others from time to time, and his peers complain so when their envoys spontaneously combust before they can quite finish delivering the messages entrusted to them. No, the throne room of Belial is merely incandescently hot. The (comparatively) small room adjoining it, on the other hand, is transcendently so. This is appropriate, as this where the real work of the Principality gets done. Indeed, it can be said that the Word of Infernal Fire is centered in that place, eternally providing the source of the flames that consume all of Sheol. It is, without a doubt, the hottest place in Hell. It is Hamon's natural environment. There is no mystery or ineffability about Hamon and her origins: Belial has always been quite forthright about the fact that the Calabite is comprised in equal measure from his own personal Forces... and those ripped or tricked from Gabriel over the last twenty thousand years. Anyone with eyes to see (assuming, of course, that one had eyes to see after a visit to Hamon's lair) would not question this: the traces of both of her 'parents' are clear to see in every line of her. It is also clear that the constant exposure to the Heart of Infernal Fire has permanently affected Hamon. The Baroness is only able to survive in Sheol - - but is miserable outside of the Fortress of Flame (or utter depths of the Lake of Fire) and only really able to relax in her quarters. Nevertheless, Hamon is a vital part of Belial's organization: she can often be seen walking about, keeping track of Belial's numerous Servitors and making sure that their activities burn ever hotter. Like her father, she is destructive... but unlike her 'father' the Baroness is capable of deliberation, foresight and creativity. In many ways, she administers Sheol for him, making sure that he can continue to freely set the three planes ablaze at whim. Most of Hell appreciates the joke that Hamon is able to draw upon those things more associated with her 'mother' - creativity, inspiration, transformation - - but only to use them to further the causes of her father. Heaven does not approve of the joke nearly as much, but Gabriel herself has personally decreed that Hamon be not touched. If the Archangel of Divine Fire hopes to somehow reconcile herself with the daughter she never bore nor knew nor wanted, she may be doomed to disappointment. Hamon is fiercely devoted to the cause of Hell: more accurately, she is devoted to the cause of her father. It is rare to find a being in Hell that Truly loves another, but Hamon loves her father. For him, she will keep his house and Principality in order. For him, she will shiver in the lesser colds while on his service. For him, she would lay down her life at his command or wish. However, despite his reliance upon her diligence, advice and utter loyalty, Belial does not love his daughter. Will not love his daughter. Cannot love his daughter. Must not love his daughter. His brand of Fire can only love the fuel. ===== Liber Licentiae Moeticae: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Last updated 02/24/02(this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yep. And if the idea of Stalkers in an IN game doesn't scare you, then consider the look on the faces of Celestials when this mysterious new creature starts simply willing a Tether out of existance after killing the Seneschal... Hell, Stalkers could force an Angel/Demon back to the Celestial Plane through shear force of Will if we use your above explanation for them. There's a _lot_ of similar concepts between these games. As well as the ones I already mentioned, you have: Disturbances : low-level Forbiddance Words : Passions and Fetishes Dissonance conditions : Aversions And Vessels also work in similar ways in both of them... >(is is just me, or does WV have Too Many Capitalized Words in it?) Far, Far Too Many. One of the things I like about IN is the lack thereof. Cthulhu ps - if you are a fan of WV, I ought to have a fan page up for it soon, which will not only include the above crossover (should I ever get the damn thing finished), but also my WV/Hellraiser mix... bwah-ha-etc. _____________________________________________ Free email with personality!
