I worried about that at first, since a Balseraph who has a role of Bill Smith would have to make a resonance roll and risk dissonance every time he picked up the phone and said, "Bill Smith speaking!" Then I figured that a Balseraph need only make a roll when trying to inflict his "truth" on others. If he introduced himself as Bill Smith, he would believe it, but wouldn't need to make a resonance roll unless the listener had cause to doubt him. If he introduced himself as George W. Bush, he'd probably have to make a roll. I imagine a Balseraph's mind as a shifting, swirling pool of constantly changing beliefs, memories, and facts centered around a selfish and paranoid core. I remember reading something about hypnosis. When a person is hypnotised and told that he will not hear anything that is said until a code word is spoken, how does he hear the code word? Answer: On a much deeper level, he is still aware of his surroundings. I imagine that a Balseraph operates similarly. He believes his lies completely, but at his core; his subconscious; he knows the truth. If he is breaking into a building to steal something, he can tell people he is a security guard without screwing up his plans. He will not, a minute later, try to shoot or arrest his fellow demons, and he can drop the lie mentally whenever he knows, unconsciously, that it is no longer useful. Just my opinion. Brian A. Fellow demons around a Bal who's just said something like that tend to hope the Bal assumes they are actually his fellow guards in plain clothes, and might be advised not to actually take anything till the Bal's resonance has had a chance to wear off in his little Bal brain... I'll just inflict spiritual/mental anguish on him, instead... ;) Moe ===== Liber Licentiae Moeticae: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Last updated 02/24/02(this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
