It was removed in the final version, no doubt because of the greatly reduced power of Etherereals. I reinstated IMC with two stipulations 1) Ethereal gods can only intervene in the Far Marches, and the exact form of the Intervention depends on which Pantheon's realm is closest; 2) A 333 in a Dreamscape represents intervention by the subconscious mind of the _dreamer_, which effectively has Superior-level power within those confines. ===== Michael Walton, #US2002023848 "Be aware that most people are operating on a highly condensed version of the 10 Commandments... the part about murder." -- Mark Bricklin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Any angel of Animals can have any of those Attunements (though the Kyrio Attunement would be partially restricted), but attunement to insects is definitely unique to the Kyriotate of Animals Attunement. And since Attunements aren't supposed to duplicate each other, Jordi wouldn't be redundant and attune two Choirs to the same group of animals. ===== Michael Walton, #US2002023848 "Be aware that most people are operating on a highly condensed version of the 10 Commandments... the part about murder." -- Mark Bricklin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Part 2 tomorrow, or the whole thing will be available on my website (http://heretech.mirrorscape.net/in-nomine) ASAP. - -EDG Mariel Djinn Princess of Oblivion "The world is fading. Fires burn low, hopes grow dim, the sun itself gutters and sparks. Soon everything will be gone, and nothing will reign." Belial has the advantage of Word-friction: his very existence maddens the Archangel of Fire. Furfur has the advantage of energy: his destruction, his chaos, his mayhem all exemplify the hideous strength of fire that makes Gabriel work all the harder to promote the positive aspect of flame. Yet neither holds a candle to the greatest threat Gabriel ever knew. There was once a Prince who presented such animosity, such enmity to Fire that even that Archangel stood back at her mere presence. There was once a Prince to whom the suns, the human hopes, the very fire for which Gabriel stood were a dire insult and a killing offense. Mariel was the Void incarnate: Princess of Oblivion, Queen of Ultimate Destruction, Empress of Nothing. Her Principality was every vacant space in Hell, and her seat of power was her Empty Throne within the castle Abyss, which still stands - beneath the Lake of Fire in Sheol. Even now, long after her death at the hands of Haagenti, some say her shade sits on the Throne, still drafting her ruinous orders to phantom Servitors. It is a subtle irony that her Word compelled her to care so deeply about oblivion, and it is said by those who knew that many times she considered suicide as recourse to the constant self-destructive urges she felt. Yet her Word compelled her to stay alive, to make certain that all was destroyed and that the Void reigned supreme before she could rest. Legend states that she was only allowed to die when the Prince of Gluttony, whose predilection for devouring everything he could see encompassed even her own Word, came to the scene and overpowered her Word's urgency. Dissonance Servitors of Oblivion were required to destroy: one cubic foot for each Force they had, every day, reduced to sand, splinters, or spatters on stone. They were not forbidden from creating, but were compelled to destroy an amount of matter at least equal in volume to what they had created, in addition to their daily requirement. If a demon of Oblivion took dissonance for not destroying something, he could not make it up by destroying more the next day; working in a Tether to Oblivion or petitioning the Princess herself were the only recognized ways of removing it. Band Attunements Balseraphs (restricted): Balseraphs of Oblivion could remove a subject from the public perception. By resonating upon an object, they could subtract it, for a number of days equal to the check digit, from the environment in which it existed: it was still there, and the Balseraph could still perceive it - as could anyone who made a successful Perception roll, less the number of days left in the duration - but the general public would walk around it, step over it, and generally ignore it entirely. This attunement could be used upon a living creature (including celestials and spirits), but the duration was for hours instead of days, and the victim could resist the resonance as normal. The Balseraph could also use it on himself, but the duration was for minutes equal to the check digit, and the check digit was not subtracted from rolls to spot him. Djinn (restricted): Djinn serving Mariel could impose their own apathy upon those to whom they were attuned. By making a Will roll, with a bonus equal to the check digit of the successful resonance roll, the Djinn could make their victim feel listless, logy, and otherwise unwilling to do anything for a number of hours equal to the check digit of the Will roll. The victim had to engage in a Contest of Wills with the Djinn in order to actively do anything (with the exception of automatic actions, such as breathing); success meant that the victim was freed of the effects of this attunement, although the Djinn's resonance was still active. Calabim (restricted): These Calabim could turn their powerful destructive forces on the Symphony itself. For Essence equal to the check digit of a successful resonance roll, they could make the wounds dealt by their entropic fields *permanent*, and unable to be healed by anything short of an Intervention, as the Symphony itself forgot that there was ever anything there to be damaged. However, the disturbance made by the use of the resonance when used in this way was increased by twice the amount of Essence spent. Habbalah: Habbalah of Oblivion replaced hopes with fears, and dreams with nightmares. By spending Essence, the Habbalite could invert a hope or dream into a certain dread: a page's hope to become a knight became a fear that he would be thrown out of court, or a king's dream of conquering Europe became an all-consuming fear of insurrection and rebellion. The duration varied by the Essence spent: 1 Essence altered the victim's outlook for a day, while 6 Essence made a permanent change. Lilim: To a Lilim serving Mariel, it was as though the entire Symphony had a Need: to stop being played, to be still and silent, to rest for a while. This was a favor they could grant, at least in parts: by spending Essence, a Lilim of Oblivion could generate a sphere of non-influence around her, where her own personal reality pushed back the bounds of God's Symphony. In a sphere with a radius equal to one yard for each Essence spent, no disturbance would be heard for damage inflicted - but no Songs could be sung, no other supernatural powers could be used, celestials could not leave their vessels and no celestials in their native form could enter. This sphere moved with the Lilim, and was visible - very faintly - as a field of intangible, impossibly small, glinting green crystals hovering in the air around the Lilim. Shedim (restricted): A Shedite of Oblivion had the option of corrupting its host by removing bits of the host's memory. Instead of forcing the host into depravity, the Shedite could remove the memory of one event from its host's mind, erasing it entirely from his thoughts. This did, however, require the usual Contest of Wills in order to succeed. Shedim of Oblivion left total amnesiacs in their wake, people unable to function in society because they'd lost the memory even of how to walk and talk. Impudites (restricted): An Impudite serving Mariel dealt damage as he drained Essence: 1 Hit per Essence taken, depending on which realm he was in (Body Hits on Earth, Mind Hits in the Marches, Soul Hits in Hell). It was a subtle destruction - 1 Hit a day for as many days as it took - and while this could do enough damage to kill a human (although the hits were curable, by normal and supernatural means) or to inflict Discord, this attunement did not allow the Impudite to strip a Force from an affected soul or spirit. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 11:38:00 -0400 From: EDG Subject: IN> Dead Prince #2: Mariel (Part 2) Part 2. :) - -EDG Mariel Djinn Princess of Oblivion Servitor Attunements Chill: The demon with this attunement had command over the temperature in the area, and could lower it by 20 degrees (Fahrenheit) or a fraction thereof for every Essence spent on the attunement, in a radius equal to his total Forces in yards. This attunement could also be focused: a single, cubic-yard area within that radius could be dropped by 40 degrees Fahrenheit (or a fraction thereof) for every Essence spent. Although this typically snuffed candles, put out fires, and chilled ovens, it is rumored that an especially powerful servitor of Oblivion actually froze a flame by using enough Essence on this attunement, and that the icy fire (now a Relic containing the Songs of Ice) sits in Belial's stateroom as a trophy. (Nobody who's actually seen Belial's stateroom will confirm or deny the rumor.) Call of the Void: This attunement allowed the user to implant thoughts into the head of another. With 4 Essence, the user could cause his victim to consider thoughts of suicide - or of murder; any thought that led to the destruction of another living creature worked, although thoughts of suicide were more powerful than others. The victim could make a Will roll to resist the impulses, at -2 if the thoughts were of suicide. Distinctions Knight of Oblivion: A demon with this distinction could create a pseudo-vacuum in his hands, drawing objects toward him. Knights of Oblivion could use the Corporeal Song of Attraction for free: the level of the Song and the check digit were both equal to the Knight's Celestial Forces. Captain of the Void: Mariel's Captains expanded their Knight powers: their pseudo-vacuums were actually miniature black holes, damaging anything they touched. The attracted object took damage equal to the Essence spent on this ability (up to 9 Essence) every round it was in contact with the Captain's hands, for a number of rounds equal to the Captain's Celestial Forces. These demons could also use the Knight abilities without causing damage. Baron of Undoing: This exceptionally powerful ability gave the Baron using it the ability to effectively stop time, for the cost of 7 Essence. For every minute that went by in the outside world, the demon experienced ten minutes; the ability lasted for objective minutes equal to the demon's Celestial Forces, or until the demon dispelled it. This power could only be used once per day. Relations Allied: Beleth, Saminga Associated: Kronos Neutral: All others, except: Hostile: Kobal Enemy: Andrealphus, Belial Rites - - Destroy matter equal twice your total Forces in cubic feet - - Convince a human to commit suicide (+2) Chance of Invocation: 0 One did not call the Void; one heeded the Void's call. I liked having the attunement get weaker the longer it was around. In point of fact, though, the original handwritten notes did call for a Will roll, minus the demon's Celestial Forces, to penetrate the illusion. > > Djinn (restricted) > > This seems more like the Djinn of Sloth Attunement to me. That's seems way powerful for a Band Attunement. >I think it's more appropriate for a Distinction (in which >case it wouldn't be Resonance-based). I had thought that the Essence cost would cut the power level a bit. Have I made it too inexpensive? Also - something that's, again, in the handwritten notes but not here - this should be restricted to Body Hits. > > Habbalah > > Again, seems more apropos to another Word to me (it would >work for Aballam, IMO). Why not a bonus to impose >Emptiness? Again, I considered that, but this feels more appropriate (especially considering that the original Djinn attunement essentially did impose Emptiness on the victim of the attunement, which was stated in the text). See your comments above about the dissonance condition. :) Perhaps using this attunement on people whose total Forces equal or exceed the Habbalite's should fulfill the dissonance condition? > > Lilim > > This, too, seems quite powerful, but not unreasonably so. Keith" Subject: IN> Worded Angel of War There are some concepts that, while quickly understandable to a human and concisely expressible in Angelic, are somewhat too complex to state simply in any human tongue. This is the Word of one such concept. It has been around, in a primitive form, since humanity realized the obstacles inherent in its world. It's something like: "I am so ready for this, that the very knowledge of my readiness is the last thing I need to complete my preparations. Challenge me, if you dare. It will be a fight to tell tales of, but I will emerge victorious." A good attempt at a shorter version is its modern incarnation: "Bring it on!" - ---------------- Phinehas("bold aspect") Cherub Vassal of War Angel of "Bring it On!" ST 17 IQ 10 DX 16 HT 15 Advantages: Howl, Combat Reflexes, Vessel(Extra Hit Points: 5, Zeroed), 12 forces(6 Corporeal, 2 Ethereal, 4 Celestial) Disadvantages: none (except for base Cherub/Vassal/War package, of course) Angel of "Bring it On!": By expressing his Word in whatever language he is currently using, Phinehas can extend the effects of his Howl to any foe who can hear and understand him. Rite for "Bring it On!": Hear the Word expressed, in whatever form, 10 times (Gain 1 Essence every 10th time; 10 at once will count). Skills: Axe-18, Karate-15, Knife-16, Knife Throwing-16, Staff-15, Guns(pistols)/TL7-16, Guns(semiautomatic rifles)/TL7-16, Tracking-10, and 4 points (probably by the half-point) in sundry skills a GM might find it useful for Phinehas to have, such as Driving, a smattering of languages, and Acting or Stealth. Phinehas is a remarkably focused angel. Equipment: Other than some clothing, a vehicle, and some petty cash, Phinehas has very little equipment, as a Zeroed "roving troubleshooter". 12 points are invested in an artifact axe(level 1, Summonable) . This is a fire axe -- blade on one side, pick on the other -- that Phinehas grabbed one day, in the bowels of a building, facing down a mob of demons and desperate for a weapon with which to protect his Attuned. Background: Phinehas is a Vassal of War, but he doesn't do much commanding of other angels. He's still more of a front-line combatant, although this status is modified by the fact that Phinehas is typically assigned to charges that need *serious* protection, preferably on the quiet. He's also not the brightest bulb in the Host, though humans find him decent and of average brains, with a very broad and experienced outlook. He tends to focus on being prepared for trouble when it comes, which is another personality trait that makes him more suited for the front lines than command. On the other hand, after thousands of years of faithful and effective service, he had this particular trait so honed and focussed as part of his plans that nominating him for the Word was a reasonable reward and an effective tactical move. Phinehas is certainly happy with any ability that can keep his foes a longer way away from his Attuned. Character creation notes: Phinehas is a 200-point GURPS character, plus whatever point cost the GM wishes to assign to his Word abilities. Standard IN players, this is an angel with double the usual starting points, plus enough additional points to pay for a Word. If assigned to a group of PCs, he can make a powerful physical ally who is unlikely to override PC actions unless they endanger a third-party Attuned. As an enemy, Phinehas is fearsome in a fight and has long experience at his job, but is of low enough intelligence that he might be duped by a clever foe. Or even Hammond organs. In fact, making jokes that involve sexual organs of any sort, or even organ grinders and their monkeys, gives me an orgasmic rush of lust. You cleared out of your base earlier this morning, and cleaned up well enough to defeat a search team. You feel pretty safe, so you're passing the time in an agreeable way, and you didn't bother to close the curtains. There's a screech of brakes outside, a crunch of metal and a disturbance, so you look out the window. You see a car and a van that were obviously the collision - not a very bad one - stopping. The van sits still for about 20 seconds, and then takes off at high speed as the car driver stalks towards them. So, you'd better get dressed and go down so you can check out the car driver, but that 20-second pause looked a lot like the time for a small group of angels to bicker. Uh-oh... ((The Malakite of Lightning, with the oath to "Always drive in accordance with the Highway Code", took his eyes off the road to look at the house as they drove by. With his Perception 4. And Lucifer intervened, on his 666 cue, which left said Malakite staring through the safehouse window, and a fine Keystone Cops routine in the van as one Offanite tried to haul him out of his seat without undoing the seatbelt, and the other one tried to seize the wheel while the Malakite was clinging to it. As someone said earlier, "It's not the /best/ plan, but half your team are bored Offanim...")) - --- John Dallman jgd@cix.co.uk ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #2670 ********************************
