You be the judge. Ryan R. ************************************************************************* It is said Jordi created this attunement in celebration of the diversity of the world's ecological sphere, long before the human problem began to great its nerves. It makes use of the fact that Jordi's angels, on average, tend to have more vessels than other angels. This is one of Jordi's older attunements, but it doesn't give it out nowadays (well, not often anyway). The reason is that the attunement can cause problems when used in areas where humans live, and Jordi has grudgingly learned that angels usually need to be s u btle around them. In addition, the wide spread use of this attunement in the early days of human civilization was noted to cause more than a few Ethereals to come into existance. Many of Jordi's older servitors still have this attunement though, particularly his Seraphim, who can use it frequently without being observed. CROSS-EVOLUTION In order for this attunement to work, the angel must have two accessible Vessels at his disposal (Vessels in Body Bags are not considered accessible). The vessels should also be of different species, but this is not a requirement. The vessels must, however, be living creatures. Kyriotates cannot make use of this attunement unless they have the means to have vessels of their own. When used, this attunement allows the angel to reach out to his alternate vessel, as if to switch between them, but instead of pushing his existing vessel into null-space, he keeps it, and fuses the two vessels together. The result is a hybrid vessel, which can access the natural abilities of both species. For example, an angel with a human vessel and a fish vessel can fuse them together to create a kind of 'fish-man' vessel, equipped with improved swimming ability, the ability to breathe water, and opposable thumbs. Any two natural species can be combined in this way, allowing for some truely bizzare combinations. The advantages gained can mimic the NC songs, but only does so at an effective level of 1, unless the angel also knows that song and is willing to spend the essence to activate it as well. The advantages can also increase certain skills by +2 for general skills or +4 for specific skills (such as Tracking by scent alone. The GM is the final arbiter of what advantages are gained, but no more than three are possessed by any one hybrid vessel. Each use of this attunement can generate a different collection of advantages; the angel can pick which advatages he incorporates into the hybrid when he creates it. Examples of advantages include, but are not limited to: - -- Water-breathing vessels: gills, 50% increase in swimming speed - -- Reptilian vessels: Fangs (as per NC:Fangs at level 1), Scales, Climbing skill bonus +2 (For tree dwelling lizards, geckos, etc) - -- Canine vessels: Tracking by scent (+4 to Tracking skill), Fangs - -- Avain: Wings (NC:wings/1), increased visual perception - -- Primates: Tail (NC:tail/1), limited tool use, Climbing bonus - -- Humans: Ability to manipulate tools and environment The angel cannot pick an advatage which is not naturally possessed by one of the existing vessels (so the ostrich-man isn't able to pick Wings, despite being Avain; he can run really fast, though). The hybrid vessel lasts until the angel ascends to the Celestial Plane or switches vessels normally. It is in effect a third vessel. Using this attunement costs two Essence to fuse the vessels, plus the rather stiff requirement of having more than one vessel in the first place. For game mechanic purposes, the effective level of the hybrid vessel is the average of the two vessel levels, rounded down. It is impossible to combine more than two vessels in this manner. Should the hybrid vessel be killed, each of the vessels used to create it each lose half their vessel rating, rounded down. An Example: Rover the Malakim of Animals needs to track down someone. He is currently residing in his doberman vessel (Vessel/4), but also has a hawk vessel (Vessel/3). He decides to combine them; since he needs to find his target quickly, he incorporates into the hybrid Wings, Tracking ability and increased visual perception -- three advantages is his limit. His doberman body sprouts large wings and its eyes increase in size as he takes off, scenting the wind for his prey while scanning the ground visually for his target. The doberhawk is effectively a Vessel/3. If he is killed while in the hybrid, his doberman vessel will be reduced to a Vessel/2, and his hawk vessel becomes a Vessel/1. Had his hawk vessel been a Vessel/1, the doberhawk vessel would be Vessel/2, and killing it would destroy the hawk vessel. It should be noted that Angels of Animals who use this attunement to incorporate a Choir animal into the hybrid do not gain their immunity to distrubance unless that is selected as one of their three advantages. It has been shown that using this attunement to fuse together to animals of identical species can be done. This gains the angel no advantages, but the hybrid does take on an apperance which is a combination of the other vessel's (e.g. mixing a collie vessel and a golden retriever vessel will result in a dog hybrid that appears as a collie-retriever mixed breed.) If done with two human vessels, for example, the hybrid will look like a different person, although features of the other two vessels will be apparent, as if the hybrid vessel was a child or relative of the other two. This use of the attunement is rarely used by Jordi's people, as it is uncommon for them to have a human vessel, let alone two. Finally, while Jordi rarely gives out his attunement anymore, some of his higher-ranking Word-bound have come up with their own limited versions. The Angel of Fish, for example, can give out this attunement with the added restriction that one of the vessels must be a fish of some kind. Jordi encourages all his Servitors to be cautious with this attunement; it doesn't want to see one of his servitors caged and dissected by human scientists trying to understand how evolution created such a creature. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 09:48:00 -0500 From: Earl Wajenberg Subject: Re: IN> Two unrelated questions Eric Bertish wrote: > > 1. I was just wondering about the future of In Nomine. I've been playing it since the very beginning, am still playing it, and I love it. But it clearly has become a low priority for the folks at SJ. Where is it going? I mean, I'm not going to stop playing if the EPG is the last book we ever have, but I still LIKE to get new stuff from time to time. :) So here are my questions/musings: 1. When will that EPG come out? I've seen the playtest files, they look great! It really blows the doors open on the range of stories I can make. The Affinities and Dreads section have some interesting implications for Angels and Demons and creating new Words in game, if you want to go that route. But it's been languishing so long in playtest... 2. Has there been any discussion of what's to come AFTER the EPG, or is it more like "well, we'll see how the EPG does before committing further." Personally, I'd like to see (a) more Superiors books that expand on Superiors that HAVEN'T already been covered in other books (i.e. I don't need another Zadkiel write-up), (b) a Places book that gives setting and campaign starting info for different places (like Austin and LA - those were great and still useful parts of the Revelations series), and (c) a Campaigns book (different ways to have groups that mesh well, even some story lines/campaign frameworks and jump starters - what DID ever happen to Eli? What about those Grigori?). 3. I was reading Siroz's FAQ boards the other day, and someone had asked whether the original INS/MV would ever be translated into English. The reply was that SJGames had the license for any English version. So my thought was - why not produce an English translation of the old game? It may not be terribly expensive to produce: SJ already has translations of GURPS, so he knows people who could/have interest to do it, and there is a lot of art that you already have even if you can't just use the INS/MV art for whatever reason. With the publishing of Vigilante, it's not as though SJGames is terribly concerned about offending anyone (I mean, have you read Vigilante? It's some REALLY MESSED UP satire), if in fact that was part of the reason for the style differences between games. I think a lot of people would be interested in buying the translation, if only to see how it's different that our beloved IN. 4. Is there any serious interest in doing a full-blown 2nd Edition? It would be a good way of reinvigorating the line amongst the gaming community. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! My first impression would be to say that the wings would come in addition to the existing legs by default, since the point of the attunement is to use the natural advantages of both vessels. If the doberhawk only had one set of legs, it wouldn't be able to run very well, I'd imagine, which would limit the doberman's natural abilities (as well as making the hybrid look _really_ strange). However, things like this might vary for each use of the attunement. The angel has some degree of control over the final resemblence of the hybrid thought the selection of the advantages. If the forelegs weren't needed, they wouldn't necessarily have to be there. I guess the best way to work it would be to have the player describe the advantages he wants to incorporate and let the GM decide what the hybrid vessel looks like based on those decisions. I'd encourage any GM to be a little wacky with the final result, though, and never let the same fusion look _quite_ the same as previous uses -- kinda of accounting for the randomness inherent in genetic mutations. From what I gather, the Superiors books are as high a priority as anything else (and while their order is malleable, they've pretty much been laid out already in the LE's mind), but yes, quite a bit depends on the success of the EPG. As far as the other books you mention, almost every book has plot seeds in it, and I'm not sure that SJGames is keen on publishing a book of adventures and adventure seeds. As for the Places book, have you checked out You Are Here? >3. There are two reasons I can think of off the top of my head: 1) If SJGames released a wholesale translation of INS/MV, they'd be competing with themselves. 2) If SJ had wanted to release a wholesale translation of INS/MV, he'd have done that instead of reimagining it as In Nomine. I don't imagine that offensive content or translation difficulties have very much to do with it; rather, it's the fact that a lot of time and energy has been expended on the US game, and it doesn't make a lot of business sense to release a product that directly competes with it, especially when people are upset that the US game itself isn't getting enough support. >4. Is there any serious interest in doing a full-blown >2nd Edition? It would be a good way of reinvigorating >the line amongst the gaming community. There's a lot of serious interest, but - again, as I'm given to understand - - the major stumbling block is that it seems like the people who are going to be interested in In Nomine *already are*, and so SJGames has no guarantees that a second edition will sell - at least not past the existing fan-base, many of whom will wait to buy the second edition until the rulebooks are re-released in compliance with the second edition, and so on... It's an interesting conundrum, a chicken-and-egg scenario: a second edition might drum up more community support, but it probably won't be produced without that community support. - -EDG ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 11:32:11 -0500 From: Earl Wajenberg Subject: Re: IN> Questions and Musings I'd like to take the opportunity to say that the EPG makes Ethereals far more interesting than they have ever appeared before. Given this, I would say the attunement is semi-limited by homology. To use your examples: Centaur: Possible combination of human and horse resulting from mixed advantages of human tool use and a horse's speed/running ability. But you could also end up with a horse that's able to stand upright and has hands where two of it's hooves should be. 8-legged Horse: Odin aside, I'd say yes with provison. You can't combine 2 horses to get a horse with 8 horse legs -- if you try, you get a normal horse that looks like it was parented by the other two. If really want an 8-legged horse, you have to combine a horse with something that uses 8 legs as an advantage. So SpiderHorse or ScorpionHorse or even OctopusHorse would be possible. (Imagine something as big as a horse, able to run as fast as a horse, able to spin webs and able to crawl up vertical surfaces...eck) Shiva: Again, you can't combine 2 humans to get an 4 armed human. You need to add an animal with 4 or more limbs. See that old Spiderman comic where he gets a couple extra arms -- that could result from combining a spiders limbs, its crawling ability and human tool use. But that combination could also result in a really big centuar-style spider. It's for fun stuff like that I encouraged GM's to randomized the final appearance of the hybrid in each use. Again, this is just how I would work it. Ryan R. When I've finished mangling it and it gets a printing slot. I'll finish mangling it soon, I hope, but I've been hitting a string of "Oh, ugh, i have no brainz" matters in Life that make me not want to give it so much less than my best. >2. Has there been any discussion of what's to come >AFTER the EPG, or is it more like "well, we'll see how >the EPG does before committing further." A little of both. The Superiors books are definitely the no-brainers. For the record, the Working Titles and groupings are: Superiors 5 (or 7): Pillars and Wildcards (Jean, Janus, Litheroy, Marc, Zadkiel) Superiors 6: The Manipulators (Beleth, Kronos, Lilith, Malphas) Superiors 7 (or 5): Peace and Nature (Eli, Jordi, Novalis, Christopher) Superiors 8: War and Death (Asmodeus, Baal, Belial, Saminga, maybe Magog and/or Furfur) Other stuff that depends heavily on the EPG would be _The Far Marches_ (something of a YAH for the Marches), and Pantheon books (possible 48-pagers). And, of course, another Cycle. (My current thinking is one fairly general-usage 128- or 144-page book, and 1-4 48-page books that go with it...) I also have my Sekrit Projekt, which would be a 48-pager, but SJ knows about it and I'm not going to harass him. If the EPG sells amazingly well, then there's a chance. If not... *shrug* That's just the stuff I _remember_ off the top of my head. But really, if the existing ones don't sell well enough, then a book will show up when there's space in the warehouse and enough free fundage to make it worth SJ's while to show the game's not _dead_. Nasty facts, makes it sound like I'm telling everyone to go out and buy,buy,buy... (Where's Haagenti's Consume attunement when I need it??) But those are the facts. *shrug* >(b) a Places book that gives setting and >campaign starting info for different places (like >Austin and LA - those were great and still useful >parts of the Revelations series), Those get a lot of flack, too. My current scheme... ...is to have two books, with two settings each. One would be Demon Controlled (probably LA with the GAPING PLOT HOLES patched somewhat), one would be Angel Controlled (San Francisco is one possibility, while I biasedly am thinking of Boston (as a recentish development)). One would be a Truce Situation (e.g., Austin) and one would be Contested (London? New York? Dunno). Add in a small dose of NPCs who aren't _too_ interwoven, some discussion on the similarities in the differnt _kinds_ of War situations and the differences that one can riff on easily. Voila! But that's way back in the pantry. You want that, you need to seriously pimp the line around your area. In the meantime, You Are Here is really a very nice little book, usable in non-IN campaigns according to at least one source. >and (c) a Campaigns >book (different ways to have groups that mesh well, Game Master's Guide? >even some story lines/campaign frameworks and jump >starters - what DID ever happen to Eli? Eli material will be with Eli's Superior writeup. But don't look for much canon about his little walkabout if there's anything planned for the future. On the other hand, KICK THE CANON. There will definitely be a lot of suggestions, if I have my way. >What about those Grigori?). They'd be a book all their own... >3. First, 1st edition, 2nd printing has to get to a point where it looks like it will be sold out soonish.
