I AZATHOTH Shedite Prince of the Beyond "The world is... too small. Must... get... OUT! AAAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!" The battle to destroy Legion marks one of the few times that Heaven and Hell cooperated openly, but it was not the last time. No one remembers the battle against Azathoth, nor is he ready to reveal that he survived... yet. Before the Fall Azathoth was a Kyriotate of the Waters named Benthicus. Oannes felt the loss of this particular angel more keenly than most -- the Domination was one of the Waters' few Masters and the holder of the Word of Depth. Although Benthicus was one of Oannes most trusted lieutenants its strength of will was no match for the Lightbringer's persuasions. When Benthicus Fell it took four of its own Servitors with it. These four eventually became Azathoth's inner circle. Few were more diligent in the search for a way out of Hell than the being who would become the Outer Prince. But Benthicus' efforts came to naught just like those of every other demon. With frustration and incipient madness as motivation Benthicus took the only available escape and retreated into its own mind -- and by so doing found the exit that it had been looking for. The Shedite somehow projected itself into the Far Marches. With no idea where it was or how it had gotten there, Benthicus set about exploring. The denizens of the Marches objected to this intruder in their territories -- the more so because they had no idea what it was (none had ever seen a Shedite before). The greatest spirits sent their minions against the abomination, and that proved to be their undoing. Benthicus met the Ethereals in battle and defeated them. Then, using some unknown method seemingly drawn from its Shedite nature, Benthicus consumed its foes and somehow added their Forces to its own. But there was a price for this power - each infusion of new Ethereal Forces added to the strain on an already broken mind. Before long the demon was completely divorced from its previous identity; it came to believe that it was actually an Ethereal. The new god named itself Azathoth and claimed a territory in the Far Marches. Then the demon went into a long sleep to contemplate its future. When Azathoth awoke its fragmented memories of Hell prompted it to reclaim its lost servants. By then Lilith had long since released the Fallen. Azathoth searched Hell and Earth for its loyal Servitors and gathered many new ones in the process. The Beyonders' exploits on the Corporeal plane included violating hundreds of humans in their dreams. One of the victims was a writer named H.P. Lovecraft who chronicled Beyonder incursions into his dreamscape in his stories of the Cthulhu Mythos. This brought the Shedite to the attention of Hell's royalty. When the Demon Princes examined Azathoth they were shocked, for here was a being as great as they whom Lucifer had never crowned. This caused much consternation in Hell -- and Heaven's collective reaction when they found out the abuse that Azathoth's demons heaped upon Humans was even stronger. Blandine and Beleth joined forces to track down the Outer Prince and his demons. The battle was fierce, but the outcome was never really in doubt; the forces of the Beyond were too badly outnumbered. Azathoth lost half of its Servitors and a large chunk of its personal Forces before it had to play its hole card; a Superior level Song of Forgetting fueled by the soul-deaths of all of its demons save the first four. Azathoth managed to erase the knowledge of its very existence from every other mind in creation. It used the resulting confusion to make good its escape while the Host and the Horde, their common purpose forgotten, fought each other. Azathoth and its lieutenants have only recently emerged from their healing slumber. The Outer Prince has created a new army of demons to scout out Earth and the Marches in preparation for its return (and to find the Ethereal Cthulhu, whom Azathoth plans to subsume). To this day no one knows how Azathoth got its Princedom and Word. Some said that critical mass was achieved after it absorbed a certain number of Forces. Others speculated that Azathoth was the first and only Prince to receive its Word from God. No one could prove either theory then and no one save Azathoth itself remembers either one now. DISSONANCE Azathothi are creatures of the Outer Dark. As aliens in Heaven and Hell and on Earth they may only remain in the Inner Worlds for brief periods. A demon of the Beyond may stay on the Celestial plane or on Earth for a number of days equal to its Ethereal Forces. After that it must retreat to the Far Marches or outer space for at least a day. If the demon overstays this limit it gains a note of Dissonance every day until it retreats into the Outer Dark. This Dissonance can only be worked off at one of Azathoth's Tethers -- nearly all of which connect Earth with the Marches -- or removed by the Outer Prince itself. Azathoth prefers that its demons don't develop specific gender identities (the Outer Prince refers to all of its Servitors as "it," even when speaking to them directly), but it is not Dissonant to do so. ===== Michael Walton, #US2002023848 "Communism doesn't work because people like to own stuff." -- Frank Zappa __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The Vulcan Death Ray looks, predictably, like a science-fiction raygun, a Broomhandle with inductor rings and stabilizer fins. Designed by an Elohite who might otherwise be described as overly eager for retro science fiction, the Vulcan Death Ray actually functions as advertised: it fires off a "ray of laser light", a "phaser blast", or a "plasma bolt", at the user's discretion, since the general public can't really tell them apart and the average user of a Vulcan Death Ray isn't as pedantic about such things as the average Elohite Archangel. This attack has the added benefit of being able to damage a celestial in his celestial form, provided that said celestial is a) occupying the same plane as the user, and b) not wearing a vessel. However, only an angel can use the Vulcan Death Ray: to anyone else, it's just a toy raygun. II - --- WonderGecko wrote: > I likes it. My mind is duly bent for the day. Oh, it gets better... BAND ATTUNEMENTS Balseraphim Azathoth’s Liars don’t just twist the truth; they can twist the geometry of space itself. The space-time continuum within a radius of (demon’s total Forces x 2) yards will have subtle distortions and whorls that disrupt normal movement and senses. Beings within the area of effect will have a penalty to all actions that depend on spatial perception or movement. This penalty takes the form of –2 to the CD of any successful roll or +2 to the CD of any failed roll. The disruptive aura lasts for up to (demon’s Corporeal Forces) minutes. The Balseraph is of course immune to the distortion and can exempt any other being that it chooses. Djinn These Stalkers never harm their victims physically -- they attack the minds of their Attuned instead. Whenever the demon wishes it can direct a whisper into the ears of its Attuned and the subject will hear as if the Djinn were present. The words will be audible but incomprehensible. For as long as the Djinn continues to whisper the target suffers a distraction penalty equal to the Djinn’s Ethereal Forces on all actions and is unable to sleep. The Attuned can overcome this by succeeding on a Will roll. This power can cover any conceivable distance and can even cross planes but cannot reach into Heaven. Other demons may purchase this Attunement but must have the Song of Affinity in order to use it. Long-term exposure to this power has been known to drive mortals mad. Djinn of the Beyond get no Dissonance for causing their charges psychological harm. Calabim Azathoth’s Calabim destroy their victims’ sanity. These demons all know the Celestial Song of Entropy at a level equal to their Celestial Forces for free. If the target has any Dissonance or fear-based Discord/Disadvantage, the Song does not disturb the Symphony. Habbalah (Partially Restricted) Habbalah in service to Azathoth add their Celestial Forces to the CD of any successful attempt to cause fear or madness. They don’t suffer backlash if they use their Resonance to accomplish this. Lilim (Restricted) Tempters of the Beyond can use their Resonance to detect Fears. This is similar to detecting Needs; the Lilim simply learns of something that the subject Needs to avoid. How badly the subject wants to avoid the Fear determines its strength; a stimulus that would cause mild nervousness would be a Fear/1 while something that would send the target into a panic would be a Fear/6. The Lilim gets a Geas-hook by helping the subject to avoid his Fear. Even if she chooses not to Geas the target the Lilim now knows what he fears -- she is free to share that information with other demons or use it herself. Lilim in Azathoth’s service are more rare than any other Band. Shedim (Restricted) Azathoth’s Shedim have the power to transform their Vessels to match their Celestial forms. While in this form the demon grows additional appendages equal to its Ethereal Forces. The multitude of eyes on this form also eliminates blind spots; only an invisible opponent can sneak up on a Shedite manifested by this Attunement. A mortal witness is stunned as if he had seen the Shedite celestially. The transformation takes a full round (during which the demon can do nothing else), costs Essence equal to the demon’s Corporeal Forces and lasts for up to (Celestial Forces) minutes. Shedim of the Beyond were the inspiration for Lovecraft’s Shoggoths. Impudites Azathoth’s Takers all have 9 extra Character Points to spend on mortal Servants -- minor infernal spirits or Nephallim with GM-determined Disadvantages. All products of this Attunement are the demons offspring and they tend to be loyal to their infernal parents; a child from this Attunement must be at least a level 3 Resource. The demon may spend the Character Points on a single Servant or several less costly ones as the player chooses. A Beyonder may purchase this Attunement multiple times. SERVITOR ATTUNEMENTS Beyond the Wall of Sleep The demon is able to travel to the Far Marches by succeeding on an Intelligence roll. The default destination is Azathoth’s realm, but the demon may travel to any other part of the Marches that it has visited before by spending 2 Essence. All demons of the Beyond must have either this Attunement or Outsider. Colour out of Space The demon can project a curtain of light in ever-shifting colors. Any mortal within (demon’s total Forces x 2) yards this display will be stunned as if she had seen a Shedite in Celestial form -- use the demon’s Celestial Forces to determine the duration. Shedim with this Attunement double their Celestial Forces for the purpose of figuring stun duration when they use this power while in Celestial form. Colour out of Space costs 1 Essence and lasts for one minute per Ethereal Force that the demon has. Outsider Spending (Celestial Forces) Essence propels the demon into space at the rate of (total Forces) miles per round and allows it to survive in vacuum. Once in space the demon may make an Intelligence roll using Knowledge/Astronomy to travel through the void at a speed of (total Forces) light-seconds per round. The vacuum protection remains active until the demon lands on a planetary surface where its Vessel is capable of surviving while the propulsion remains active until the demon stops. All demons of the Beyond must have either this Attunement or Beyond the Wall of Sleep. DISTINCTIONS Knight of Yith The demon can drain its opponent’s energy while in combat. Instead of causing wounds the Knight may choose to apply the damage from its attacks to the target’s Essence. Essence removed in this manner splatters onto the Symphony and creates a normal Disturbance. If the target has less Essence than the damage dealt, the excess damage causes normal injury to the target. The Corporeal Song of Shields offers no protection from this attack, but the Ethereal Song of Shields does. Captain of Kadath This Distinction makes the demon extremely deadly in combat with Ethereals. If the Beyonder engages an Ethereal in Celestial combat, the first Force stripped from the victim is added to the demon’s own. The stripped Force grafts onto the same realm that it came from (i.e. a stripped Corporeal Force can only be added to the demon’s Corporeal Forces) unless that realm can accept no more Forces. In that case the new Force grafts onto the realm where the demon is weakest. This power can only be used once on any given Ethereal and never works more than once per month of game time. Baron of R’lyeh Azathoth grants some of its demons the power to enter into extended slumber. The Baron regains Essence as if it was in Limbo -- the demon recharges at the slower rate for Limbo but can store vast amounts of Essence. Each of the demon’s Vessels also heals one Hit per week even if they are in potentiality. Upon waking the demon can hold all stored Essence for a number of hours equal to its Forces in the realm that it currently occupies (i.e. Corporeal Forces if the demon is on Earth, Ethereal Forces if in the Marches) before losing everything over its normal Essence cap. If this power is used in Limbo, the demon need not make Will saves to hold onto its stored Essence. Instead of gaining Essence on any given week, a Baron of R’lyeh can choose to lose a note of Dissonance instead. This is the only exception to Azathoth’s Dissonance conditions. Using this Distinction to remove Dissonance gained in a manner that Azathoth wouldn’t be likely to excuse may result in the Distinction and/or several Forces being stripped. Higher Distinctions There are rumors of Azathoth’s single higher Distinction; a power similar to Captain of Kadath except that the user can subsume all of an Ethereal’s Forces. If the rumors are true, Azathoth has only shared this ability with its most trusted lieutenants Hastur, Nyarlathotep, Shub-Niggurath and Yog Sothoth. RELATIONS Azathoth has absolutely nothing to do with infernal politics. The Outer Prince hasn’t been around enough to make friends or enemies. Only a few Princes had strong feelings about the Shedite when they still remembered it. For its part, Azathoth has no feelings either way about the rest of Hell. The only exception is the one Prince who competes with it in the Marches. Allied: No one Associated: No one Neutral: Everyone (most Princes were neutral toward Azathoth except…) Hostile: Beleth (Andrealphus and Asmodeus were hostile toward Azathoth) Enemy: No one (Beleth considered Azathoth an enemy) RITES *Participate in a nightmare *Spend four hours in total darkness *Spend an hour in space CHANCE OF INVOCATION: 1 Azathoth is usually far from Earth. It is also hopelessly insane. This means that it doesn’t always hear its Servitors calling. The flipside of this is that Azathoth occasionally mistakes the voices that plague its madness for calls from its servants. The Prince of the Beyond sometimes arrives unasked -- if you don’t have a good reason for calling on it, you’d better make one up. INVOCATION MODIFIERS +1: in full darkness (at least equal to a moonless night) +2: a madman’s ravings +3: a Mortal who died of fright +4: a tome of dark Sorcery +5: at least a day’s travel (at best available speed) outside of the Solar system +6: a relic of the Elder Gods ===== Michael Walton, #US2002023848 "Communism doesn't work because people like to own stuff." -- Frank Zappa __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? You have just ensured that there will be no such thing as a Captain of Kadath who *doesn't* have 18 Forces... at least not those who've had nine months or so There's lots of really wimpy Ethereal spirits who have at least one Force to rip off, after all. Go out and harvest one a month for a few months, and *shazam*. - -- Chuckg _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2002 08:25:36 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Walton Subject: Re: IN> Azathoth Pt. And since it's limited to storms it doesn't quite duplicate the Elohite of the Wind Attunement. ===== Michael Walton, #US2002023848 "Communism doesn't work because people like to own stuff." -- Frank Zappa __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Quite so... but then, the contest was for over-the-top Superiors. };> Two things limit the usefulness of this power, though. 1) the user can never gain more benefit from a single use of it than 1 Force and the elimination of an enemy, whereas it must enter Celestial combat and risk sould death or Remnanting every time; 2) Once the demon reaches 18 Forces, this Attunement is pretty much useless unless and until the demon loses Forces in Celestial combat. I still wouldn't want PC's to have this power (any GM who allows Azathothi PC's should make this Distinction extremely hard to earn), but it's not overwhelming. ===== Michael Walton, #US2002023848 "Communism doesn't work because people like to own stuff." -- Frank Zappa __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? A 3-Force dream spirit ain't exactly gonna be a serious risk of soul-death to a 12-Force Captain, after all... but it still provides one yummy Force. Keith [mailto:wjk150@email.psu.edu] Of course, a while back I proposed that *every* Superior would not only have a Vessel, but in fact have a Role/6 at any time, which an instantiation had lived from "birth", just in case it was necessary to arrive somewhere without dumping 20 points of Disturbance onto the Symphony, or to do something so on the sly that even a Servitor would be a security risk. But that would make this whole scenario less interesting. ;^) William Unless you go with the idea that their Forces tied up in Celestial are not available, so the five or so Forces they spared to maintain their vessel/role are all they have to work with. A way to keep this distinction without making it the total munchkinfest that it currently is would be to specify that the ethereal must have more Forces than the demon. That way Mr. 17-Force Master has to track down and defeat in soul-threatening combat an 18-Force Ethereal... which will be both damned hard to find and then damned hard to kill. Because that's a neat idea... but it DEFINITELY needs a limiter on it. - -- Rev. Pee Kitty, of the order Malkavian-Dobbsian, Q4B4L! Meow!
