A boy of seven will >have the wrinkled skin, baldness and drooping nose and ears of a man of >ninety. > As I understand it, current thinking says the source of natural aging effects seems to be linked to the failure of your cells' natural DNA repair mechanisms from mutation. As you get older, you take more or more hits from various mutagens (and cell division itself is a source of mutation over enough divisions), so eventually you build up enough damage and incapacitate the proteins that keep such damage in check. Then damage kicks in like crazy, and with enough cells suffering this kind of thing you get aging effects, especially since they tend to suicide after awhile. Interestingly enough, such failures of DNA repair are also the source of cancer (which is also why older people get cancer more often), so it may be aging is a side effect of a process intended to kill cells before they go malignant. Those "protein caps", called telomeres, are in fact pretty much designed to degrade after each cell division; their linkage to aging may be that they effectively signal the cell "hey, we've probably divided enough times to wreck our DNA; time to pack it in". Anyway, premature aging disorders seem inevitably linked to some sort of innate genetic failure in DNA repair, so you start picking up the symptoms of aging much earlier than normal as damage accumulates faster (I think most such disorders also, of course, cause a heightened risk of cancer). OK, IN value to all of this? Well, a couple of possibilities present themselves with Eli, Demon Prince of the Cancer. First, all that human genome work has been looking for things like these inherited gene problems in DNA repair that spark cancer susceptability. Canonical Eli actually ducked out of Heaven just a little while before all those inventions which were necessary for our current research progress were conceived IIRC (today's stuff is basically the flowering of the new research tools like PCR which popped up a few decades ago); it's entirely plausible he may have had something to do with this outgrowth in biology research now. A Fallen Eli might well have continued this interest, but now for the purposes of discovering appropriate weak points for spreading his cancer. Imagine a virus tailored to infect and disrupt DNA in juuuust the right place to give everybody a suddenly heightened cancer risk a few years later. Considering how difficult it would be for the average person to determine a cancer research lab was working on ways to spread cancer instead of fight it, and such a lab makes a great place for PCs to investigate/fight. A rash of suddenly aging people near such a facility might be just the cue to Heaven what's going on in the first place. Oh, and given that a lot of research these days uses what are basically cancerous cells to model things in the test tube, hitting your players with *things* suddenly springing from growth plates in an Eli-run research facility is quite appropriate... Another thought would be that Fallen Eli would also probably be violently against gene therapies that were intended to cure cancer; indeed, with some of the fumbles along the path to successful gene therapy thus far, the hand of some Celestial party in making sure things backfired would actually explain quite a lot :). This would of course present a ready made problem for Jean and even Vapula to fight him over. A lot of this could be twisted to Vapula also in a more canonical game, so if you want a way to sneak current events in science into your game, here's one way to play it. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 04:20:22 -0500 From: "Brian Rogers" Subject: IN> In Search Of.... I'm not too concerned with having higher-powered characters since these are ancient beings who may be badly damaged in the war in Heaven. Here's what I've got: Cherub of Light -- Clarity The Angel of Clarity would get the Seraph resonance and dissonance, and would have an attunement named "See the Light" which would cause self-deluded beings to make a will-roll or temporarily have their self-delusion revealed. (This might be way too powerful because of the affect it could have on demons... then again, some self-deluded beings won't necessarily have a change of heart just because they know they are wrong.) Not sure of Word-forces or rites. Mercurian of Knowledge -- Scribes The Angel of Scribes would have a photographic memory and could instantly comprehend anything that's written, similar to the ability that Yves gives. I'm not sure of a secondary ability, Word-forces, or rites. Something you may think of doing is seeing how the celestial's particular choir affects the way they view their Word. For instance, having the resonance/dissonance of a Seraph is fine, but he's still a Cherub. He protects things. And if he has Clarity, then it's because he's protected it for so long, or woven it into his very existence as a Cherub. And if he's around the time of the Fall, he could possibly use the power to convince a few of his fellow Light servitors not to Fall along with Lucifer. Or even convince several new demons to quickly self-redeem? You can also find modified versions of these on the Tattered Symphony site. DISSONANCE Angels of Light cannot promote darkness – either literally or metaphorically. They would no more extinguish a light source than they would allow ignorance to go unchallenged. Not interfering with natural cycles of light and darkness is all right, as is letting a temporary light source expire naturally. It is Dissonant for these angels to learn (let alone use) the Songs of Shadows or to give out false information. CHOIR ATTUNEMENTS Seraphim Seraphim of Light are immune to anything that would blind them or obscure their sight. This includes darkness, smoke, fog, sand in the eyes and sight-based illusions. Cherubim (Restricted) Lucifer’s Cherubim can, at will, create a mystic line-of-sight to an object of their Resonance. The link ignores distance and visual obstructions between the angel and the target’s location, but visual conditions at the target’s location still apply. Anything viewed through this link is treated as if it is only 10 feet away for the purpose of using Songs and Attunements, but the angel is unable to see anything at her current location. The link may only be used to effect the person or object to which the Cherub is attuned –- no playing a Song of Shattering on the demon who’s attacking your buddy! Ofanim (Restricted) No other Ofanim can move like the Wheels of Light – they can use their Resonance to move at the speed of light while in Celestial form! This power can be used for up to one minute per day per Celestial Force that the angel has. Elohim Lucifer’s Elohim, true bringers of light, can play the Corporeal Song of Light at no Essence cost and without disturbing the Symphony. Malakim There were no Virtues before the Fall, so there is no Malakite of Light Attunement. Kyriotates (Restricted) Lightbearer Dominations can create Vessels made of light (luminescent clouds, swarms of glowing motes, burning bushes, etc.). Such a Vessel costs Essence equal to the number of Forces that it can contain and lasts for a number of hours equal to the angel’s Corporeal Forces. Kyriotates of Light gain a note of Dissonance if they allow a light-Vessel to be destroyed. Fortunately, light-Vessels are immune to physical damage (but not to Songs or damaging Attunements). These Vessels can also pass through any barrier that is not opaque. Mercurians Lucifer’s Mercurians are adept at helping mortals from behind the scenes. They can play the Ethereal Song of Form with no Essence cost and twice the normal duration. Grigori As with Malakim, there were no Grigori before the Fall. There is no Grigori of Light Attunement. SERVITOR ATTUNEMENTS Clarity A simple touch from the angel (either bare-handed or with an implement) permanently cures blindness, regardless of the cause. The subject of this Attunement can resist with a Will roll, though it’s hard to imagine why anyone would. Enlightenment With a touch, the angel can allow another being to see what he sees. This applies both to literal sight and to “seeing” in the sense of understanding... arguably the most powerful Attunement that Lucifer granted! Borrowed sight lasts for a number of minutes equal to the recipient’s Ethereal Forces. Understanding, once granted, lasts indefinitely (but somehow you can’t get a demon to understand that it’s better to serve God...). Guiding Star An angel with this Attunement is never lost as long as she can see a natural heavenly body (the Sun, the Moon, any star, etc.) with her unaided eyes. Using the Songs of Sight counts as unaided eyes for this purpose. On the Ethereal and Celestial planes, Blandine’s tower and Gabriel’s volcano count as heavenly bodies. Light Sculpture This potent Attunement causes the illusions made by the Ethereal Song of Light to become solid. Light Sculptures act just like the Corporeal objects that they resemble – a bridge could be walked on, a chair could be sat in, a sword could do damage, etc. Size and duration limits are normal for the Song. Note that Light Sculptures can make no sounds and have no scent or taste; the Attunement only makes them tangible. Illusions also lack the special powers of the things that they represent –- for example, an illusory dragon could not breathe fire (its teeth still work, though). DISTINCTIONS Vassal of Light The angel is able to see the light or darkness within souls. With a successful Perception roll, the target’s aura is revealed to the angel. If the subject has the Aura Discord the Discord level is added to the TN. Treat the subject as being under a Corporeal Song of Nimbus except that the angel won’t suffer the negative effects of seeing an opposing halo. Friend of Radiance A single word from the angel tears illusions asunder. All illusions (the Ethereal Songs of Form and Light, the effects of hallucinogenic drugs, Balseraphic Resonance, etc.) within the angel’s total Forces x 3 yards are disrupted by a burst of heavenly light if the angel succeeds on a Perception roll. Master of Illumination Lucifer’s few remaining Masters are divine logicians and instructors. They add their Celestial Forces to any attempt at logic or persuasion. This bonus applies to both the TN and to the CD of a successful roll, but the real power is that the bonus is contagious; a person who hears the Master’s arguments first hand has a bonus of (Master’s Celestial Forces) to the TN when persuading or teaching a third party! This talent is what made Lucifer’s arguments so persuasive just before the Fall. Basic Rites *Light a family dwelling. *Spend two hours basking in natural light from the Sun or the full Moon. *Spend three hours watching the stars. *Teach something new to someone who resists learning. =====

Well, tragic or hilarious, depending on how your feeling at the time. Espira, Djinn of Corruption, Demon of Redemption Corporeal Forces: 4 Strength 6 Agility 10 Ethereal Forces: 6 Intelligence 12 Precision 12 Celestial Forces: 6 Will 12 Percison 12 Word Forces: 14 Vessel: Human female/6 Discord: Selfless/6, Merciful/6, Stigmata/3, Fear/6 (Asmodeus), Need/2 (Love) Skills: Fast Talk/5, Escape/6, Seduction/4, Lying/6, Dodge/5, Knowledge/6 (Redemption) Songs: Affinity (All/6), Charm (Celestial/5), Healing (All/4), Shields (Corporeal/5), Enslavement (Corporeal/4), Freedom (All/2), Stalking/4 Attunements: Djinn of Corruption, Djinn of the Game, The Black Hand, Dissonance Binding, Humanity, Fated Future, Knight of the Yellow Eye, The Fallen, Demon of Redemption Demon of Redemption: Espira has many powers that stem from her proto-Superior Word. One, she can roll Perception to see how much potential a demon has for becoming a candidate for Redemption. Second, any demon she attunes to must make one Will roll everyday, given a modifier by the GM based upon how selfish the demon is. If the demon makes three Will rolls in a row, then he never has to roll again, even if Espira re-attunes herself. If the demon -fails- three Will rolls in a row, then he will move towards Redemption and gain one level of the Selfless Discord, without his knowledge. Lastly, Espira has the power to Redeem at any time, -without Superior assitance-. However, she can't due to The Fallen distinction which Beelzebub gave to her, described below. The Fallen: This was a unique distinction that Beelzebub gave out to a large number of his valued servitors. This distinction supposedly stopped anyone who had served Corruption to ever Redeem, much like how Uriel's angels could never Fall. While this seems redundant, it had a valued effect. First, if the demon refused, they obviously had thoughts of Redemption in mind, and were destroyed by the Game. If they accepted, then no matter how selfless they became, this permanent mark would never let the demon become an angel, they always die horribly in the process. Novalis had been heard weeping more than once after the horrid cries of an attempted Redemption of one of these demons... *HISTORY* The the Symphony could ever be said to have a dark sense of humor, many cyncial celestial agree that Espira would be it's poster child. Espira was a Cherub that fledged before the Fall, when Novalis gave the Reliever one of her Forces, so she could fledge properly. Espira served Novalis happily until the Fall, when she witnessed Lucifer and half the Host go to Hell in a handbasket. Although stricken with grief, she soon recovered and went on serving her Mother. When the Horde broke out at last, Espira felt the call of duty, and asked Novalis, now an Archangel, to allow her down to earth so that she may do God's duty as best she could. Although reluctant, Novalis allowed her to go. Happy, Espira found a large village on earth and went about spreading peace, love, and selflessness to it's people. Soon she grew complacent, and let herself become throroughly connected to the humans she loved, ignortant of demonic danger. And it would have stayed that way, happily, if not for the 6 demons of Corruption on assignment from their Prince to damn and destroy the people of Espira's village. The Cherub didn't realize what was happening until it was too late, and she could only watch with stunned horror as the demons tortured and defiled the village. Dissonance screeched into her soul, and despite her Mother's Word, she ran to the aid of her charges, attacking the demons with viscious rage. It didn't help. More of her attuned died, more dissonance bit into her, and at the height of the battle, in a spectacular Infernal Intervention, Espira Fell. She was beaten into unconciouness, and dragged down to Hell by the 2 demons that survived her attack. She was brought before Beelzebub, and forced into his service. Espira had never -wanted- to Fall, she despertly wanted to go back home to Mother. But she was stuck in Hell, and planned her escape day and night as she was forced into the duty of defiling God's creations. Eventually, she got her break. The heavily discordant demon broke her Heart and ran for the nearest Tether to Flowers. But before she could reach it, an ambush of Game and Corruption demons attacked her and she was brought back to Hell. Before the cold stares of Asmodeus and Beelzebub, she awaited her final judgment and hopeful death. Anything would be better than having to suffer in Hell. To her surprise, Beelzebub gave her The Fallen distiction, and the two Princes whisked her before Lucifer, where they then requested that Espira be given the little-understood Word of Redemption. The Dark Lord was intrigued, and Espira was given the Word. She could feel the call of the true Symphony once again, and it's sweet melody filled her soul, promising the grace of God- but then the power of Beelzebub's burned her soul, and the demon let the light go, just beyond her reach. Asmodeus and Beelzebub were pleased. No matter how much Espira wanted to Redeem, it would never happen. If she did, the mark of Corruption would soul-kill her instantly. Today, Espira is the most misreable and hopeful entity in all of Hell. After Beelzebub died, Asmodeus took her for himself, finding her a unique and useful tool. The Game Prince uses her to ferret out suspected traitors, allowing the demon to befriend and even help Renegades escape, only to move in for the kill before Espira's greiving eyes. One would wonder why she hasn't killed herself yet... but the answer is simple; her Word does not allow for her to consider that as an option. Redemption also means hope, hope that there -is- a way, that somehow the love and grace of another being will save them no matter how low they are. The 4 Djinn of the Game atuned to her at all times prevents any Malakim from killing her by normal means. Novalis has forbid any angel from harming Espira, and the Archangel of Flowers toils day and night for a way to overcome the mark on Espira, and bring her daughter back home. Espira is a sweet, loving and gentle person; most demons mistake her for being an exceptional Cherub on sight. She desperatly wants to go home, or at least -help- another demon escape Hell, but her feared Lord is always watching. Lilith, disgusted at the treatment of this sorry creature, has taught Espira the Songs of Freedom, in hopes that it will somehow aid her in escaping her eternal torment. In a game, Espira can be used as flavor, or as a trap for potential Redemption candidates. She approches demons, trying to offer a helping hand, often falling in love with the escapee, only to have a pack of Gamsters descend at the final moment to capture the demon as Espira looks on in dull horror. Her immense fear of Asmodeus stops her from trying to tell the demons to stay away from her, and the remnants of her Flower nature prevents and violence she would inflict upon others to defend him. Even at the end of the War, Espira may not be able to Redeem. Only the grace of God may be able to return her home, and the Demon of Redemption looks towards the sky from the bottom of the Inferno, praying for a final release from her pain. She never wanted Fall. --- Sirea, Free Cherub, Angel who Wanders, petitioner for the Word of Eternity ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 15:38:36 -0700 From: Kish Subject: Re: IN> Espira, Djinn of Corruption, Demon of Redemption sirea@softhome.net wrote: > The Fallen: This was a unique distinction that Beelzebub gave out to a large > number of his valued servitors. Asmodeus removes dissonance if it gets too bad, but it's already turned into many Discords. She got Fated Future from Kronos (who enjoys how the "experiment" is turning out), the Song of Enslavement from Andrealphus (who seduced her and decided to tease her with a Song that mimicked the love she desires from people), and the Songs of Freedom from Lilith (who wants her to escape). The Knight of the Yellow Eye acts as a lesser version of the Malakite resonance. The Black Hand attunement allows demons to subtly degrade things. Not explained is the fact that The Fallen drew directly upon Beelzebub's Word and power, and that giving it to too many demons would reduce it's effectivness, or make it powerless altogether. Only the Prince of Corruption mastered it, and now that he's dead, no one else can reproduce the effect (although they have tried quite a bit). Uriel may have been able to take it off, but he's gone. If Beelzebub gave it to all the Horde, his personal power and Word would have been stretched so thin that the distinction would become powerless. As it stands, Beelzebub only gave it to his -valued- servitors, which were few and far inbetween. --- Sirea, Free Cherub, Angel who Wanders, petitioner for the Word of Eternity ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 18:33:15 -0600 From: sirea@softhome.net Subject: Re: IN> Espira, Djinn of Corruption, Demon of Redemption Well, I hope you all liked her, and that my reasoning was plausible. His current vessel he's had for millennia, ever since he was sent to Trauma one time and chose to create this vessel when he left (being the form he took when ethereal). Since he rarely leaves the Marches, though, Eli didn't bother to make him change vessels back then, and now Eli's never around to 'fix' the problem anyway. Also, it is very much like the Beast, although, I had this idea long before I knew much about that show and Disney story (in fact, the original idea was for a character in a script I started writing some 10 years ago). - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I want to know where your views lay on this matter. Let's say I wanted to build a home in the Marches. Would I simply go out, with my trusty ethereal axe slung over my shoulder, go find an ethearal tree, unsling my ethereal axe, give the ethereal tree a few good wallops, chop up the ethereal tree with my ethereal axe, take the ethereal timber... you get the idea. Or would it be simply a matter of using one of the songs, or pure Will? (I suppose, if I did use Will, I could still create all those other effects too) I suppose what I'm asking is, is it possible to use the former technique of DIY Ethereal house construction, or are songs and Will the *only* way to affect the Marches? (I'm not talking about Dreamscapes either, just the Far Marches, Border Marches, etc) - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.381 / Virus Database: 214 - Release Date: 2/08/2002 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 20:17:42 +0930 From: "G N E Z D A" Subject: IN> Servitor of Eli Hmm... okay, reading through a book I have on the Holy Grail, the never-healing wound imagery of the Fisher King has *really* inspired me for my IN character. How's this? The character (a canine form, not a feline form now) is a *very* old celestial. He was created, as a servant of Eli, even before the Marches themselves came into being. Ever since he was first created, he was fascinated and obsessed with creating things. When the Marches first appeared, he was the first celestial to visit them and revelled in the Marches. Here was Creation at its fundamental level, not with the initial *act* of creation, but rather the *thought* of Creation. Very soon he was given a Word (unsure of exact Word, but something to do with Imagination, and he was responsible for furthering Creation in the Marches, or in the Imagination). Despite being an Ofanim, his devotion to his Word and responsibility was as strong as that of any Cherubim's and so his Ethereal self began to take on a shape of its own; that of a dog. The loyal, steadfast guardian who stands by his master no matter what. (his celestial form was unchanged, but his ethereal form began taking on metaphorical meanings, etc). He was often visited by countless celestials and ethereals and was a very hospitable host. Spending almost his entire existence in the Imaginary (ie the Marches) his personality began to change, becoming more like the stereotypical 'Arthurian Knight' (with all the mythical stereotypes that entailed, such as chivalry, honour, politeness, etc). In many ways, he seemed far more like the product of someone's imagination than a proper Celestial (if you get what I mean... :)). He was also an exquisite craftsman and made countless relics and talismans. Then something terrible happened- the Purity Crusade began. Tez (his name will probably change) was powerful, but was no warrior, and he had no way of combatting the coming horde of celestials. Every Ethereal spirit or domain that was wiped from the Marches, Tez felt a sharp claw slash across his heart. He failed as the guardian of the Marches (and Imagination) and that Word was removed from him (not from the Council, but some higher source). Consequently, just as the Marches is now a shadow of what it once was, so too is Tez. He still goes by his old form (a canine) and still retains much of his personality (albeit more muted), but he is a broken celestial, with a wound that can never heal. - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
