Beyond your work, I've always seen the sigils as the AA's way of saying "I'm not getting involved directly, but here, for propriety's sake, I shall be represented." With your work, the message is more "I really AM busy, even for a multi-manifestation, but here is my representative.." You've put a good spin on how I look at them. Here's how I figured it- it's kinda like Belial's dissonance conditions (Very very very kinda) where if you're burned by your own plan then you get dissonance. If Kenshiel doesn't plan out a scenario well enough to exclude innocents, and then one is taken hostage or, much worse, used as a shield then yeah, Kenshiel gets dissonant. >No wonder he has discord. :-) > Actually, precisely. There really I posted a few gadgets under the title "Vaputech Implants" on Jun 4 of this year if you want to poke around in the digests -- or I can email it to you. That was just a short list, and not a general ruleset for cybernetics. I think if cybernetics will be in general human use in your campaign, they can't be Relics or require Essence to work since humans that aren't Symphonically Aware can't consistently make relics. However, if you want to play them as taking away from someone's humanity in a more spernatural sense, I think that having them interfere with daily Essence recovery makes really good sense. Perhaps a simpler rule would work: each time someone would regain Essence, they must roll against their highest characteristic, with a penalty equal to the number of implants they have(large chunks of arm, leg, etc. perhaps costing more than one "implant"); failure denies them the Essence. With too many implants, they lack Essence entirely, and must live their life without that vital energy. Well, a cyber-surgeon has studied VERY hard to do what he does and would probably have a sixth force because of it, his cybersurgery skill would be a subjective variation of Enchantment and with enough machines (anything that can collect or give off essence, IMC I'm going to have celestials as batteries at a certain point for pulling essence from) including variations of the Nybbas Computer for Songs, I think that humans will be able to make them without really even knowing. I'll refine this system but that's the gist of what I want to do. > However, if you want > to play them as taking away from someone's humanity > in a more spernatural > sense, I think that having them interfere with daily > Essence recovery makes > really good sense. The reactions that the media are broadcasting - effectively, what you just said - are, IMX, limited to the people they're talking to on the broadcasts. It doesn't make exciting news to talk to the average person on the street, who - again IMX - is already doing what the experts say and going about with their lives, albeit while taking some small precautions. (On the other hand, this also seems to be troubling people *outside the region of influence* more than it's trouble the people affected. Of course, that could be the hysterics on the news...) It's frustrating and a little depressing that people are getting killed out here, but frankly, out of the Baltimore-DC-Richmond metropolitan complex, unless this sniper has an underlying MO that nobody's been able to figure out yet (this is why we need Batman), the odds of any single person being the next victim are literally ten million to one. One of the residents of this area is about seventeen times more likely to be struck by lightning. (And note that at least one of the victims *didn't even live here* - he was driving through with his wife and stopped for dinner.) If this is a Nightmares operation, it's a) ridiculously high-profile, and b) not doing very well. I doubt Beleth is going to be very happy with this particular Servitor. - -EDG ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Oct 2002 07:08:17 -0400 From: EDG Subject: Re: IN> The Angel of Snipers At 10:03 PM 10/23/2002 -0400, Randy Finder wrote: >I'd have thought so as well, if it wasn't with the interaction with the >news conferences and such. On the other hand, I also take issue with this. The Demon Princess of Nightmares might be a Djinn, but that doesn't mean that all of her Servitors are - and sometimes, it makes for better nightmares if the hobgoblin who's after you takes what you say or do and uses it against you. (Consider how Moose must feel: he can't say *anything* to the media for fear that the sniper will be listening and will take action *just to prove him wrong*.) >Besides no demon or servitor of Beleth would offer to quit for money. A >demon or Servitor of Nybbas would consider making such a offer. Why not? Again, it makes for a better nightmare if nothing you do will stop the hobgoblin, and we have no evidence that a) the sniper wrote the ransom note, and b) even if he did, he isn't lying. There's no reason for him not to accept the money and then keep killing people. - -EDG ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Oct 2002 13:17:23 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Seraph=20Descending?= Subject: Re: IN> [fiction] "My Boyfriend, Jesus Christ" Grrrrr!!! He gazed out the passenger window thoughtfully, watching people as they passed through the parking lot. In the driver's seat sat another of his kind, straight-backed and facing forward, his eyes closed. "Merrick," said the driver finally, "you are certain that this is necessary?" The passenger blinked languidly. "To say that this is necessary is to say that there must be some casualties in any war." The driver nodded. "True," he said, "but I have never known you to be one to inflict casualties." "Correction, Alcron. I inflict as little collateral damage as possible." "True." The two sat in silence for several minutes more. Then: "There." The passenger squinted. "In the blue raincoat?" "No. Her escort. In the black windbreaker. Dark hair, mustache. See how familiar he is with her." The driver sounded mildly put out. "Is that a problem, Alcron? Many humans are familiar with one another." "Not that familiar," replied Alcron. "Ah," said the passenger, and reached behind him. "I assure you that collateral damage will be minimal." The driver concentrated for a moment. "If he is removed, she will be given a promotion, and he will stop harassing her. She has entertained thoughts of doing this to him herself." His lip curled. "They are not unpleasant thoughts, to her." Merrick stopped midway through his motion. "You are certain that he is the one?" "Quite," replied Alcron. "He is a long-term victim, and I can tell that it is still there." "Very well," said Merrick, and smoothly slid the rifle into place, half out of the window. Its muzzle had been blacked to avoid reflecting any light, and its scope was polarized for the same reason. "Brace yourself." The rifle cracked quietly - Merrick was sure that nobody in the parking lot heard it - and several hundred yards away, the man in the black windbreaker shook and fell. After a moment, disturbance rolled like long, low thunder across and around the van, but neither of its occupants paid it much heed; they were concentrating more upon the form that had slithered out of the dead man's chest. "There," said Merrick, a smile playing about his lips. "And now -" He cut himself off, and Alcron started the van up and began to drive off, as a horde of dark-winged warriors, invisible to the naked eye, descended upon the form. The whole thing is constructed of infinitely delicate parts, and is a perfect example of micro engineering. Tiny hinges and cogs allow the stem to bend and flex in a lifelike manner, and the flower itself opens and closes with the light. A gift from Eli upon her nomination to archangelhood, this serene and elegant sigil carries with it a subtle, yet glorious scent which instills calm, peace, and a feeling of intense, divine, love in all who breathe it in Corporeal Form: A hand crafted amulet, consisting of two leaves woven together, on a thong of Amazonian vine, and filled with sweet smelling dried leaves, herbs and flowers. Those in the presence of the bearer instinctively know that they can come to her for comfort, and are reassured by her presence. Abilities: By laying this sigil against the flesh of a wounded being, and spending one essence, the power of the lady of flowers instantly heals them, and places them into a deep sleep which lasts for 12 hours. It is almost impossible to harm the bearer directly, or indirectly if the intent is to harm the bearer (such as firing a rocket at a building that you know she is in) it requires a will roll at a penalty of –8 to do so. - -Oannes- Celestial Form: Made completely from water, drawn from the Tranquil Ocean that was once Oannes’ domain, this sigil was a wonder to behold. Forming the word Life in angelic, it could be seen to ebb and flow within itself in time to the ocean it came from. Set at its very center lay a sapphire of deepest blue, which glimmered like sunlight across the face of the deeps. The sigil itself was observed to dissipate into steam upon Oannes death at the hands of Belial, but the gemstone remains, and glimmers still. His mourning servitors placed it on a coral plinth in his grotto, at the archangel’s favorite thinking spot. It has remained there ever since, no-one daring to disturb this poignant memorial to one of the lost. Corporeal Form: Only the Blue gemstone remains of Oannes sigil and that is all that remains of its corporeal form, formerly a gilded trident. It has not been taken to the corporeal realm since its lord was slain. Abilities: No longer fully connected to the power of the word of The Waters, it has lost much of its power. Now, it’s only boon is that the bearer no longer needs to breathe to survive. Whether underwater, in a cloud of poison gas, or in a vacuum, their body will be at no risk. - -Raphael- Celestial form: A mighty book, which should weigh in excess of 400lbs from the look of it, Raphael’s diary and personal sigil charts all of his discoveries in the pursuit of knowledge. Written on sheets of quartz so thin that they flex like paper, and bound in ornately decorated leather, this sigil has resided on Yves reading desk since Legion was vanquished. Yves has been known to pore through it at times, a forlorn and yet deeply understanding look upon his face. One young servitor once inquired what the last entry was, and Yves told him, with a far away smile on his face, that it read “I go now to do my duty before God with joy in my heart. Do not grieve for me my friend.” Some amongst Destiny’s service, mostly former servitors of Knowledge, claim that it further reads “for we shall meet again upon this road ere all is done.” Corporeal Form: A small book bound in black leather and inlaid with silver. It bears the inscription “For those who would seek to better themselves and others”. It has a small clasp, with a lock upon it for which there is no key, but one who truly desires knowledge for its own sake will find the book opens for them with just a touch. Abilities: The bearer may specify a particular knowledge, spend one essence, and open the book. For the next day, he has Knowledge/6 in that field. He may specify another field before that day is up, and spend another essence, but the previous knowledge flees his mind. - -Uriel- Celestial Form: Uriel’s sigil is as pure as its owner. A huge, flawless crystal, with a studded iron circle around its center, it radiates a clean light which casts no shadows. At the stone’s core, three lambent flames burn brightly. The central one is silver-white, and the flames on either side which sweep out and up are jet black. A solid chain is attached to either side of the iron band around it. It was only ever carried by the purest of Uriel’s servitors, and currently resides in Laurence’s offices, casting its light upon proceedings there. Corporeal Form: A beautiful silver lantern, with a single pure-white candle inside it. The candle burns with a clean and bright flame, which grows brighter in the presence of impurity (Dissonance, Discord, or Demons). Abilities: Any being touching the sigil will immediately start losing discord, as the sigil forcibly purifies them. It is not a pleasant process, since each level of discord removed inflicts D6 soul hits (which can strip forces). Many who have touched it thus have been consumed by its white fire. - -Yves- Celestial Form: An archaic looking plate of stone, cracked with age and weathering. It bears an inscription in a language which is older still than Angelic, and which has only ever been spoken once. Only one being in heaven knows how to read this tablet, and he’s keeping it to himself. The tablet itself hums and pulses with raw energy, and observers say it tends to move around on its own every once in a while. Irreverent as always, Yves keeps it on his desk, next to Raphael’s sigil, and has been known to use it as a simple paperweight. Corporeal form: appears as a small round amulet, carved from jade, with two letters inscribed upon it, Alpha on one and Omega on the other. The script around the edge of the disc is indistinct and unreadable. It is attached to a thin cord of wire woven from platinum, copper, and gold. Abilities: Whilst wearing this sigil, the bearer will find himself inexplicably drawn to places where he can help others, although this pull is not felt. It will simply affect decisions the wearer makes, such as causing him to wait for the _next_ bus because this one is too full. And if that bus contains a woman who needs comforting because her husband passed away two days ago, well, that’s just coincidence, right? - -Zadkiel- Celestial Form: A circular shield, similar in appearance to Zadkiel’s Aegis, cast from beaten bronze, and in a celtic style. It bears the words “Sanctuary”, “Solace”, “Love”, and “Strength”, inscribed around Zadkiel’s name in the angelic tongue. Though it appears heavy, it weighs little, and is easy to use. Corporeal Form: A small bronze clasp, which shows a stylized mailed fist holding a circular buckler. Anyone within sight of the brooch will know that its bearer can protect them. Abilities: Should a being come to the bearer and request sanctuary, the bearer may spend 1 essence, and state “By the grace of God, I grant you protection” If the supplicant is genuine, they immediately gain Protection 10, which remains whilst they are in the presence of the bearer. phew. done. now to switch my mind into Eeeeevil (kitten) mode for the DPs... - -FallenSeraph +++Thou shalt not worship false Billy Idols+++ http://www.geocities.com/archangel_nine/innomine.html __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Rurouni Kenshin: Tales of a Meiji Swordsman. I'd *HIGHLY* reccomend (and how DO you spell that never-to-be-sufficiently-damned Word anyway?) reading the manga, although there are currently no plans for an official english translation of it. Short synopsis: during the Bakumatsu Civil War that birthed the Meiji Era, creating a form of democracy instead of the rule of nobility (correct me if I'm grossly inaccurate, japanese history isn't one of my subjects), there was a particularly skilled assassin called the "Hitokiri Battousai" (a direct translation would be "swift-drawing man-slayer" but that wrecks the effect. In a Western, he'd been called "Killer Quickdraw" or something similar. Oh, and can someone who knows the Song Of Exorcism *PLEASE* get Ehnhywael, Shedite Demon of Going Off Into Tangents out of my head?) first worked as a shadow assassin, slaying one government official after another, until a sequence of events that I won't go into so as not to spoil one of the best arcs, after which he functioned as the main bodyguard and general guardian angel of the leaders of the Revolution. Then, after the last battle, he simply vanished into legend... And that's where the story starts, 10 years later, where a shiftless vagabond named Kenshin wanders the land, with a reverse-bladed katana by his side, a cross-shaped scar on his cheek and an Oath never again to kill a human being. Oh, and a raw skill at kenjutsu that leaves most people who see it gaping... LIS, it's a good series. I expect the three frogs come from the book of Revelation 16:13: "Then I saw three unclean spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and ou of the mouth of the false prophet." The dragon is Satan and the beast is the Antichrist. Even the choice of red may come from Revelation, where red is the code color of evil (e.g. the Scarlet Woman; the Beast is also scarlet). I would be interested to read any other descriptions for IN beings that you might have. Surely Michael and Gabriel were given devices? How about Raphael and Uriel? Just to let you know, the good people at the Internet Wayback Machine (http://web.archive.org) have snagged, among other things, several versions of the late, lamented INcyclopedia. While I think there was one revision following the most current one they have (it seems to me some of the Superiors celestials were logged into the system at one point), this at least gets us current to October of the year 2000. The archive is sometimes slow -- perhaps this can be rescued and put up elsewhere? I'm not sure what copyright restrictions might apply. Still, if someone were to pick the grand work up, this at the least would take care of the earlier works.... In one way the vital energy, the Essence can also reflect one's humanity, which cybernetics in the classic cyberpunk sense, is reduced as more implants are added. Comes from the Latin: re- "again", commendare "to entrust, to commend". It has been entrusted/commended to you by someone else, and you are now re-commending it to still another person. >with a reverse-bladed katana by his side, a cross-shaped scar on his (Now that I think I've got everything down...) To clarify this: A katana (for the one person out there who doesn't know this already) is a Japanese sword, used and popularized by the samurai class. Its plural, like most other Japanese nouns, is the same as its singular. (One katana, many katana.) It has a very stylized grip - usually a diamond pattern but occasionally a flat wrap - which is usually wrapped either with cord or with eelskin, a decorated guard which surrounds the entire grip (it does not simply protrude off in the same direction as the width of the blade, as in so many European swords), and a long, slightly-curved blade with an angled tip (many katana look as though they've been cut off at the end, at first glance) and only one edge, on the outside of the curve. In addition, to make the blade supple and resilient, it is forged using two metals, one soft and one hard. Properly done, this preserves the strength of the hard metal and the give of the soft metal, while minimizing the weaknesses of each. (Improperly done, a katana will either sag (too much soft metal) or shatter (too much hard metal) when struck.) An interesting note is that this approximates the manufacturing process of Damascan steel. The inside of the curve is used for blocking blows: the logic is that if one of your strikes is blocked, a blunt edge won't chip the blade as badly as a sharp edge, and if you are blocking, you don't want to run the risk of chipping the edge of your own blade; in addition, since the inside of the curve is used to block, you can catch the other warrior's blade inside your katana and strike with your wakizashi (a short sword that accompanies the katana) while he is trying to disengage his katana. Further, the edge of the blade continues up the angle of the tip, in order to make piercing strikes more effective and in order to make the disengagement of a "trapped" blade easier. With that in mind, a reverse-bladed katana has the edge on the *inside* of the curve, and the blunting on the outside. This makes it slightly more difficult to strike, and much more difficult to pierce, since the edge *does not* continue around the angled tip. In addition, the blade is more difficult to disengage from a block, since the wielder has to deal not only with the lack of an angled tip but with the interaction of the inner curves of *both* swords. However, the damage done by such a weapon - because of the curve of the edge - is slightly more than would be dealt by an ordinary katana. ObIN: In Nomine approximates with its weapon skills. While Large Weapon (Sword) will be good enough for most GMs, it should be noted that each blade has a different style of combat associated with it, and katana are no exception. Someone proficient with European swords can *use* a katana, but to use it properly requires the user to roll at (Default + Skill) rather than (Characteristic + Skill). (In other words, someone with LW (Sword/4) and 6 Strength will be rolling against a 7, not a 10, to use a katana.) (I seem to recall that Power and Accuracy for katana are listed in some book or another; since I don't have that book handy, I'll use Long Sword from the core rules.) Large Weapon (Reverse Katana) is a different story. Even characters proficient with katana will have difficulty using a reverse katana: anyone with skill in LW (Katana) may roll at (Default + Skill), anyone with skill in LW (Sword) may roll at default, and anyone without any sword skill at all rolls at (Default - 3). Reverse katanas have the following characteristics: Slashing Accuracy: -1 Damage: 6 Piercing Accuracy: -2 Damage: 5 Further, there is a skill practiced mostly by samurai which involves the assessment of another warrior's prowess relative to one's own simply by judging the draw of his blade. This skill is known by various names (I'll call it "Iai" here, since that's the last term I heard for it); for alternates, consult GURPS Japan (maybe?) or Legend of the Five Rings. Iai (Perception; cannot default; pre-requisite LW (Katana or Reverse Katana)) A character's skill in Iai can be as high as the GM allows, but can only be used when wielding a katana or reverse katana, and the character's skill level in Iai is reduced to his skill level in the weapon which he is wielding (again, either katana or reverse katana). In addition, this skill can only be used in a contest of skills, and then only against an opponent who *also* possesses this skill. Both characters participating roll Iai, and at the same time draw their weapons; the character with the better success is considered to have defeated the other. (Failure indicates that the sword was drawn improperly - snagged on a sleeve, made too much noise coming out of the sheath, etc.) By agreement - for this is what Iai is used for - the victorious character is seen not only to have won this contest, but to be likely to win any duel that the two swordsmen might fight, and the defeated swordsman should (in feudal Japan, this is usually read as "must, to avoid dishonor") stand aside and not impede the victor. A tie usually results in a physical duel. - -EDG ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #2832 ********************************
