Sacrificing maidens to a closed volcano somewhat defeats the purpose. Besides which, the object is to pervert Tethers to Divine Fire, and Vesuvius is rarely - if ever - seen as anything other than a font of destruction, even without Infernal influences. - -EDG ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Nov 2002 22:12:57 +0800 From: "Jeffery Watkins" Subject: Re: IN> Greetings Hi, I'm the one most likely to make the most non-canon remarks and do feel welcome here. Now's I don't gotta send Guido round wit' a baseball bat. ;D - -EDG ObIN: The Baseball Bat There are a few of these around, most of them in the hands of low-ranking Servitors of the Game. Asmodeus occasionally needs to make a more... direct impression than his usual 'monolithic, aloof dictator' image allows, and on these occasions he sends in demons with Baseball Bats. It's said that the relics were created by Valefor himself for Asmodeus to use, and rumors run wild as to what exactly Valefor could have done to require that kind of appeasement. A Baseball Bat has no overt powers, requires no activation roll, and consumes no Essence. It is an unbreakable and concealable, but otherwise unremarkable, wooden* Louisville Slugger. It provides no bonuses to Power or Accuracy (beyond a standard bat's own statistics), and in fact will do no more than 1/4 of a victim's total hits in the appropriate realm (yes, as it's a relic it can take form on all three planes); once the total damage inflicted by the bat reaches that point, it will do no further damage to that victim in that realm until he is healed. However, any hits that it does deal will be applied to the victim's nearest limb joint (shoulders, elbows, wrists, knuckles, hips, knees, ankles, toes), regardless of where the Baseball Bat strikes. (If the victim doesn't actually /have/ limbs, apply damage as normal, but still only up to 1/4 of the victim's total hits.) A variant Baseball Bat has been developed, comprising perhaps ten percent of the active Baseball Bats, which deals damage only to the knees; however, this damage can be up to 1/2 the victim's total appropriate hits. (If the victim has no limbs, all damage is done to the center of gravity instead.) Asmodeus typically only assigns this variety of Bat to large, Italian Calabim, however. In fact, that's the point. Each of this set of marbles is of a different kind: some cat's-eye, others mirrored or iridescent, but all of them actual, honest glass (the originals were dropped early in this century by a mortal glazier who managed, somehow, to capture Kobal's esteem, and the newer marbles have been manufactured in Hell by the same glazier). The shooter is almost perfectly clear, but has a single (deliberately-introduced) flaw: a mirrored bubble in the precise center of the marble that reflects everything around it. Kobal keeps the shooter with him at all times. The rest he is known to give out to Servitors both meek and strong - even occasionally demons serving other Princes, and at least one mortal - although the type of marble given seems to be fairly random. Their function is simple: they effectively provide their owners with the Rite: Do something Kobal thinks is funny. A demon serving Kobal with one of these relics can therefore potentially reclaim up to 3 Essence per day, which can be distinctly beneficial for a demon in a war against Heaven. There are, of course, practical considerations and consequences to take into account; the reader is invited to discover them on his own. Better! More Taste! Not Really... (Beelzebub Revised) (I know it's not INverse, and I'm sorry >_< I got fixtated on fixing my old Beelzebub writeup, and decided to repost it to see if it was up to snuff. Tell me what you think :D) Beelzebub, Djinn Demon Prince of Corruption "The world is tainted... a rotting husk..." Lord of the Flies, Prince of Airs, the Grand Tainter. All of these were titles for Beelzebub, the first Prince of Corruption, and what many say was the first Cherub to ever Fall. Beelzebub was created by Lucifer long before the Fall, as one of the first Cherubim of Light. He served Lucifer with a blind faith, and hung upon the every word of the Lightbringer. He was a prideful and harsh being, displaying Djinnish tendencies long before they even existed. When Lucifer began to doubt the will of God, Beelzebub was one of the first angels to know, and the Cherub agreed implicitly with his beautiful master. With the aid of Lucifer, Beelzebub began to spread dissent and doubt among the Host, and slowly but surely twisted angels into Lucifer's mindset. When the Fall finally came, Beelzebub was right at his masters side, fighting with bitter hatred, deliberately attuning to angels and hunting them down to be killed. But Lucifer lost... and Beelzebub went screaming into the void, clawing at the fiery airs around him. In his famous conversation with the Fallen Lightbringer in Hell (as recorded by Milton), Beelzebub realized that his pride had led him nowhere, and that his love for Lucifer meant nothing. Bitter and angry, the powerful Djinn went about the quiet (aside from the screams of the Fallen) planes of Hell, and slowly let the cold apathy wrap around his already black Heart. He worked to twist the demons into Lucifer's mindset still, as he had nothing left to exist for. When Lucifer called for his most loyal servants at the foot of Sheol's volcano, Beelzebub came, mindless, apathetic and bitter. Lucifer began to crown demons as his Princes, weeding out the weak and reinforcing the strong. He walked up to Beelzebub, a hideous and hateful being, and spoke with soft acid in his voice, twisting his former Servitor's will to his own once again, promising power and glory far beyond what he had once known. Beelzebub simply looked with rotted eyes at the Lightbringer's face, and spat upon him. Many of the gathered demons gasped in terror, but Lucifer, his face cold and emotionless, only wiped the spit from his face, and crowned Beelzebub the Prince of Corruption, for his tireless works to pervert that which was beautiful and glorious, much like Beelzebub himself once was. The Djinn immediately took to his new role, and for the first time his obsessive side shined through his apathy, as he worked hard to promote his Word. Beelzebub made a dire enemy with Uriel, the Archangel of Purity, and the battle between the two was legendary. Beelzebub sought to taint the world, to bring it to Hell's knees, while his opposite number worked hard to keep clean that which was so easily corrupted. Eventually, in a grand final battle in the Roman colleseum, the beloved city of both Superiors, the mighty Djinn met his end, impaled upon the white sword of Uriel, his own black blade tossed to the side, as his twisted and diseased Forces bled away into the Symphony. On the corporeal plane, he appears as a tall and brooding man wearing a stained white cloak, and underneath his skin was black, covered with yellow sores that bled diseased fluids. His eyes are rotted and cruel, and he speaks with a gentle and whispery voice, his every word spinning new perverions into the minds of those who listen. Celestially, he appears as a massive creature with the hindquarters of a black dragon, the body of a blue skinned man, and the head of a white goat, with seventeen wings of darkness spanning from his back. Large chained hooks of yellow metal bite deeply into his skin, and wherever he walks things that are pure turn black with corruption. *Dissonance* It is dissonant for a Servitor of Corruption to not pervert and corrupt something that is pure at least once a day, much like the Band dissonance for Shedim. If one day is missed, then it can be made up the next day and the note erased. But if two days are missed, both notes become permanent. *Band Attunements* Balseraphim: For every level of Discord/disadvantage that the target of the Balseraph’s resonance has, they have a -1 to their Will roll to resist. Djinn: Every time that a Stalker of Corruption makes a suggestion to their attuned, they must make a Will roll to not consider doing what the Djinn suggested! Some rumors speak that this is what Beelzebub did originally to help angels along to Lucifer's cause during the Fall... Calabim: These Calabim can let the flow of their entropy slowly degrade instead of instantly destroy. The Calabite can choose to double the check digit of his resonance, but the damage done will come at one point per hour instead of instantly, and the entropy will manifest as black and yellow sores. Beelzebub has some of the most patient Calabim in all of Hell. Habbalah: If the target of one of these Habbalite's resonance fails his Will roll, the emotion that he is inflicted with will become a temporary Ethereal Discord or a disadvantage, at a level equal to the check digit of the Habbalite's resonance, lasting for 24 hours. Only one Discord/disadvantage of this type can be inflicted at a time. Honorium: An Honorite of Corruption can engulf her body in a hellish yellow-black flame whenever she fights in celestial form. For every successful hit landed, her targets Will goes down by one, recovering at the rate of 1 every 2 rounds. Lilim: Lilim of Beelzebub can automatically see Needs that relate to any Discord the target of their resonance possesses. Shedim: Shedim of Corruption always succeed in possessing anyone who had a disadvantage. In addition they add their Celestial Forces to all resonance rolls they make. Impudites: For every time an Impudite of Corruption successfully Charms a human, his target has a -1 to resist him the next time he Charms him, often snowballing into people who can never tell the Impudite no. However, if the Impudite fails any of the resonance rolls, or the target resists, the penalty is lost. Skulkers: These Dark Grigori add their Celestial Forces to their resonance when they are trying to mask a disturbance caused by a demon corrupting someone. Also, when they impregnate or are impregnated by a human, the child will always be a Nephallim. *Servitor Attunements* The Black Hand: For 2 Essence, whatever the demon touches is subtly corrupted, softening humans for more serious depravations, and ruining objects. When used upon a human, they must make a Will roll. If they fail it, then they will do something in the next 24 hours that is totally out of their moral realm. A priest might speak a blasphemy, a pacifist raise his hand in anger, or a fasting monk gorge himself on food. When used upon an object, it does damage equal to the demon's total Forces, doing one point of damage per minute, slowly degrading the object. Heart of Darkness: At the cost of 1 Essence and a successful Perception roll, the demon may look into the soul of a human and know which sin will drive a human into corruption- and just how low the human can go, barring celestial interference. Note that this is not the same as seeing a human's Fate, although it certainly may be a part of it. *Distinctions* Knight of the Yellow Eye: These demons are part of the reason why Uriel was so eager to destroy his opposite number. Knights of Corruption can spend 2 Essence and mimic the Malakim resonance with an automatic check digit of 2, but only to see the most ignoble thing the target had done in the last week. Captain of the Rotting Heart: Beelzebub's Captains can temporarily increase the power of a Discord in another celestial, with a cost equal to the new level of the Discord, and a duration equal to the demon's Forces appropriate to the type of Discord being increased in hours. For instance, a Captain increases an angel's Anger/2 Discord to Anger/5, for a cost of 5 Essence. The demon has 5 Ethereal Forces, so the increase will last for 5 hours. Baron of the Fall: Masters of corruption, these demons could give a gentle push to those angels already on their way to a Fall. For Essence equal to the amount of Forces of the angel they are affecting (who must have a minimum of 3 notes of dissonance), and a failed Will roll on the part of the angel minus the amount of dissonance he has, the Baron could pervert the angel's resonance and dissonance into that of their Fallen counterparts, for the Baron's Celestial Forces in hours! If the angel uses their new resonance anytime, they incur a note of dissonance, and slide even closer to a Fall. The point was, if the angel can resist using their dark new gift, they can avoid further corruption. If the angel succeeds the Will roll, the Baron can not use his ability on anyone again for 10 minus his Celestial Forces in days. Example: A Baron with 4 Celestial Forces perverts a dissonant Mercurian who has 5 notes of dissonance, and a Will of 8. The angel fails to roll the target number of 3, and for the next 4 hours, he has the resonance and dissonance of an Impudite! If he uses the resonance at anytime, he will incur yet another note of dissonance, and his soul goes even Darker. *Higher Distinctions* The Fallen: This is a unique distinction that Beelzebub gives out to nearly all of his valued servitors. It supposedly stops anyone who bears it from ever Redeeming, much like how Uriel's angels could never Fall. While this seems redundant, it has a valued effect. First, if the demon refuses to accept this "gift", he obviously has thoughts of Redemption in mind, and is destroyed by the Game. If it is accepted, then no matter how selfless said demon becomes, this permanent mark will never let the demon become an angel, he will instead soul-die in the attempt. Novalis had been heard weeping more than once after the tortured cries of an attempted Redemption of one of these demons... *Relations* Associated: Andrealphus, Mammon, Meserach, Gebbeleth Hostile: Kobal, Asmodeus *Basic Rites* -Corrupt something pure (usable twice a day) -Sit in a pool of waste or filth for 2 hours -Eat the flesh of a decomposed and decaying corpse -Kill a Servitor of Purity (+2 essence) -Help an angel Fall (+3 essence) Chance of Invocation: 1 Invocation Modifiers +1 A rotting garbage heap +2 A Servitor of Purity (another +1 if it's a Malakite) +3 A field of snow, completely defiled +4 An uprooted graveyard +5 An angel on the verge of a Fall +6 The highest point in the city of Rome --- Sirea, Free Cherub IST Destiny, Angel who Wanders, petitioner for the Word of Eternity (currently being ridden by Grapejuice, Renegade Shedite of the Game, and petitioner for the Word of Pranking Tightwads) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2002 10:42:01 -0800 (PST) From: Michael Walton Subject: Re: IN> Greetings - --- EDG wrote: > The Baseball Bat What? Seriously? Sounded like you knew your marbles from the write-up. Steelies are basically ball bearings used as marbles (and would Calabim of Dark Humor ever love those...), clearies are plain glass with no decorations or inclusions (but can come in various colors) and boulders are supersized marbles (so you can have cat's eye boulders, cleary boulders, steelie boulders, etc.). I can see Kobal wanting plenty of variety in his marble bag; no two alike seems reasonable. =====

Interesting seeing the prejudice of Moe against the Undead being woven into a story. And when I say prejudice, I do not mean irrational dislike. Nah. Furfur's a minor Prince, and likely the first thing he would have done is found Oliyai, co-opted it, and made it the Seneschal of this minor but remarkably stable Tether that had been floating around for four or five years. After all, a new Prince needs all the Tethers he can get - and I'll bet this one represented the only press conferences he'd have been willing to watch... - -EDG Provoked? That's not provoked. (This is provoking. ;) Celestial Discord: Irrational Dislike of Belial Belial will be damned if he knows where this came from*. It just started showing up one day, both in his Servitors and in other demons, and started spreading. (In fact, when any Prince inflicts a Discord, the GM should roll 1d6; on a 1, the Discord inflicted is Irrational Dislike of Belial, regardless of what the Superior *intended* to inflict. When a demon gains Discord through dissonance, this Discord appears on 1-2 on 1d6.) Belial could remove it from his Servitors fairly easily - but all of the rest of the Princes, save Asmodeus and Kronos, are too busy laughing to do anything about it. Interestingly, it did not appear in angels at first; only when a demon with this Discord managed to come into contact with a squad of angels did it begin to spread through the Host - and the secondary "infection" seems to be *worse* than what the Horde is suffering. (This Discord appears as inflicted by an Archangel on 1-2 on 1d6, and from dissonance on 1-3.) The effects are fairly simple: when the Demon Prince of Fire is mentioned, by name, title, or implication, any celestial suffering this Discord must roll Will, at a penalty equal to the Discord's level, to avoid attacking the speaker immediately. When on the attack, the celestial is under the effects of both Berserk and Murderous, although the condition lasts only until the person who brought up Belial leaves the scene, at which point the celestial immediately returns to normal. In the presence of a known Servitor of Infernal Fire, double the level of the Discord for the purposes of penalizing the Will roll. Perhaps not so oddly, Gabriel refuses to remove this Discord in her Servitors. * Yes, he knows. He's not Vapula, for goodness's sake. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2002 16:47:43 -0500 From: "William J. Keith" Subject: Re: IN> Project Silence: DETACHMENT (Not from Mr. Cleveland...) My main problem with DETACHMENT is this: the process of conversion to an Undead doesn't work (or at best produces a zombi, with the original Celestial Forces, i.e. soul, elsewhere) unless the recipient understands that they are acquiescing to a process which will destroy a soul which otherwise would most likely have achieved an afterlife. The members of DETACHMENT don't believe this -- they explicitly think people are being captured, tortured and duplicated, not sent to Hell and rebound into demons. It might work if the equipment they use includes a Coffin of Undeath(an artifact which sure as hell will not exist in my campaign(which is back on! Yay!), or will at least be reversible if it does, because unwilling Undead feels counter to the whole concept for me), but this artifact never produces mummies and doesn't require any extra materials, unless DETACHMENT has come across a method of "improving" the Coffin (a relic personally crafted by Saminga) so that it can produce mummies some of the time. The concept is viable; in the Project's terms, though, I would think it would *only* work on those that accept the "superstitious" explanation, and have further understood the process, in light of the technical explanation, to forego any trip to the afterlife. Alternatively, have the equipment be a Coffin of Undeath, and the results *all* need the fluid. Final note: Ick. Ick. Ick.
