Just wanted to say that you wouldn't have my insightful banter or walljarring dent enlargment for a few days, as I will be at an anime convention this weekend( ^_^ ). But I do have a bit of something I'm working on thats going remarkably well. Another IN adaptation, and one that I decided to work out completely before I assaulted the List with. But, a thought struck me today, so I figured I'd share this bit of obIN with you to justify this otherwise incredibly egotistical post: Relic: Harp String It's surprising how close the mortals have come to figuring it out. I mean, they're starting to get the superstring theory, its just that they're coming at in from the completely wrong point of view. I mean, the strings aren't a part of quantum physics- they're instruments of the Symphony. The Harp Strings (and they actually can appear to be anything from guitar strings to piano wire) are extremely flexible pieces of wire about a foot in length. They each contain the Celestial Song of Healing/6 and a small reliquary equal to the bought level of the relic. As usual they gain one point of essence per day which can only be used to power the Song they contain. This is done by taking an end of the string in both hands and snapping it tightly, causing it to make a small melodic *twang* sound, and use all of the essence it currently has stored to that day to fuel back Will points. Eli, before his walkabout, was quite liberal in handing these out and usually used them for his instruments, meaning that there are a great many still scattered on Earth. After he began his tour of the Corporeal, his servitors IST Flowers told Novalis about the relics and she was quite happy to provide them, though perhaps not so absentmindedly as the Archangel of Creation. She was especially happy about the minor flaw Eli had worked into them. If ever one of these was used in a violent manner upon anyone by anyone, that string would permanently break, both as a relic and in any possible use as for an instrument. The strings had another noted strange effect, which would explain why Eli was quite willing to let them fall into the hands of demons. The string operates, on a basic level at least, by singing directly from the True Symphony into the soul of the entity using it. Even demons. Now, the first and even the second use would be fine. Every use after that produces a note of dissonance for the demon. Now, this only worked with that one particular string. Another string could be used twice without any illeffect for the demon. After all, each string represents a different note of the Symphony. It was also observed [mostly by Lightning, who keeps tabs on *everything* (they know where each of the three Elvises are)] that demons who accumulated dissonance from the strings and attempted to roll it into Discord were quite embarassed to find themselves suddenly afflicted with Merciful and Selfless. Odd that. Cost: 4/level of reliquary Josh ^_^' Oh, and I'll explain the broken shoelace later, in my eventual post- "Fire Alarms: Belial's Revenge Upon Humanity... In Particular- College Students." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Nov 2002 09:13:40 +0100 (CET) From: Unni Solaas Subject: Re: IN> I boggle... Much better than the dry picture I had of him of just he's there to reveal the truth. Thanks! I also loved the various relationship portrayals, especially Lawrence and Khalid. Two friends who just have different outlooks instead of 'I'm of X religion and you're of Y and are wrong.' It was also interesting how they interacted about Uriel, two trusted lieutenants, concerned, not blind, but still loyal. Enough babbling, I could go on about Jean's better outlook, I mean its the same as canon, but you made it palatable and even sympathic, Raphiel and Yves and I'm doing it again. Seven is a lot of players, in my experience. > Can anyone give me advice to give them on making > deep characters that can be roleplayed well? Get the players to ask the cliched actors' question: "What's my motivation?" When the player knows why the character does things, it's easier to RP well. They should also be encouraged to give their characters goals -- this provides a direction for IC actions (as in, anything that doesn't take the PC closer to the goal is undesireable). Undesireable actions can still be done, but a certain amount of angst should result. A good guideline used by the WW LARP club; give a PC three goals -- one social/personal, one professional and one supernatural (getting a Word works as a supernatural goal in this case; make the player specify which Word and why the PC wants it). Lastly, encourage the players to give their PC's unique quirks (nervous habits, distinctive speech patterns, strong preferences/opinions about certain things, etc.). This adds flavor for everybody. =====

Revolutions tend to start with incredibly powerful - and often Heavenly ('liberty, equality, fraternity' - hardly Hellish) concepts which get ground underfoot when the bloodbath begins. Yes, these Words are 'stronger' than Madame's - that's why they have attunements while she doesn't - but that just doesn't cut it when the mob gets to work. >and I can't see Malphas giving > them up to Saminga. oh, he wouldn't. But reread what Malphas' organisational structure is like; a casual sidestep through a mutally Hostile Word isn't a problem. Also, Madame, as a Lilim, isn't going to object to working with Malphas. > Beheadings is the Word that the > Guillotine would be under; the holder of that Word would be > Madame's boss, not one of her underlings. And Novalis should be serving Plants, not the other way round. Should =/= is. The shock of The Terror would have granted Madame a short term degree of power which beheadings hasn't had since Richard the Lionheart. Also, beheadings isn't as clearly Hellish, bleeding power away, and is going to cause Laurence some Word clash, due to swords being the norm for beheadings recently - not a situation the demon can expect to survive. >If Madame tried > to co-opt Nightmares About Being Beheaded, Beleth would've > aced her long ago. On the contrary, most Words serving Dreams and Nightmares are going to have a close relationship with their corporeal counterparts. In Hell, that's going to be a power struggle. Why should Beleth mind? It's like fishing - your Wordbound is bait; a few centuries later, when the Word is fading from Earth, the other Wordbound comes crawling, begging for access to the dreamshades who *remember*. THEN past insults are 'discussed'. Also, getting the Word of Nightmares about Beheadings would probably require Madame's support. >Public Executions is one that Asmodeus > _will not_ let go of -- if Madame tried to get that one, > the Prince of the Game would get involved personally. She wouldn't have to - Executions (of any form) are about as fundamental to Death as you can get. I imagine that at least one Execution based Word was given to Saminga by Asmodeus, just to infiltrate a spy into Death - possibly all of them. > Lynch Mobs are largely about hanging, not beheading, and > thus that Word is of limited value to Madame. That's true, but is largely due to the etymology of lynching (after Captain Lynch), so the Helltongue variant, not being culture specific, would be more useful. And, of course, I couldn't think of a better Word for the mobs who were the 'face' of The Terror. One cannot be an Archangel (or Demon Prince) without being a Superior. In effect, a Word-bound angel who has not undergone the (strictly hypothetical - or at least, it's the non-canon name for it - both IIRC) Superior State Change is just a Word-bound angel. An angel who has undergone the Superior State Change is an Archangel, regardless of whether or not he has a Word. (cf. Michael, pre-Fall.) However, it's so rare for an angel to become an Archangel without having a Word first that it's barely worth mentioning (or, perhaps, more important than anyone thinks). On either side of the gate is The Wall, the Cathedral of Meserach, AA of Diligence. He watches over the vale and celestial beyond, repelling any and all diabolical attacks. Inside the gates is the Eternal City, which is surrounded on all sides by the other Regions. Inside the Eternal City are buildings from every age and era, all in perfect condition, bright and beautiful. It is here that blessed souls walk among the angels. Near the entrance is the Temple of Philia, once the Cathedral of Gebbeleth, AA of Trust, and now the Cathedral of his daughter Alaemon. In the west section is the Palace of Eros, Cathedral of Andrealphus. Here lovers of all kinds can find respite and counseling, and learn about the nature of love from Love's angels. A bit to the northeast of the Palace is the Grand Theater, Cathedral to Kobal. Here all sorts of entertainment can be found, but the true highlight are the classes and theaters where angels of Laughter learn their trade. To the north of Kobal's Cathedral, near the edge of the city stands the plain yet inviting white buildings of the Cathedral of Nybbas, the Metatron AM/FM Radio Station, with it's large blinking TV towers and multiple media centers. The whole Cathedral grounds has a very "50's" air about it, and while all the technology is cutting edge, is appears like it came out of the 50's. To the southeast of this area is the Lilim Guildhouse, Lilith's Cathedral, where her beloved Daughters trade favors and organize their efforts to promote Free Will. South of the Guildhouse is the official entrance to Yves massive underground Library, which manifests as a small bookstore. Boarded off within the Library are all the entrances to Raphael's former Cathedral... In the center of the Eternal City is the entrance to the Council Spires, the next Region. But just outside the Spires is the sacred Jacob's Ladder, where blessed souls Ascend to the Higher Heavens. Slightly south of the Ladder is the last Cathedral in the Eternal City, the Well of Souls, and Saminga's province. Here the angels of Transcendence work to regulate the flow of souls in the Symphony, and can observe the beautiful harmony that the souls of the corporeal plane creates. Inside the Council Spires there are two Cathedrals. To the east is the Cathedral of the Fallen Dominic, the Celestial Tribunal, now taken over as the Cathedral of Asmodeus, Archangel of Justice. In the west section of the Spires is the Cathedral of Light, Lucifer's Cathedral and the first Cathedral ever made. Inside the mighty crystal dome is filled with pure light and beauty, where the humble angels of Light work hard to fight back the Darkness of Michael and the Horde, and to enlighten the human race. Stretching along the west side of the Eternal City are the Domains of Commerce Park and the Halls of Progress. In the Halls of Progress is the Cathedral of Vapula, The Grand Laboratory, a massive collection of buildings with technology from every day and age- and ones yet to come. Here the angels of Science work upon the unique art mankind discovered. They also work to fight the primitive demons of Thunder, minions of the Fallen Jean, who seek to return mankind to nothing more than dirty god-fearing animals. In the north part of the Halls is the abandoned Halls of Creation, Cathedral to the Fallen Eli... North of the Halls, stretching along the northwest part of Heaven, is Commerce Park. The rolling hills and gentle parks is where the Archangels Mammon of Equality and Malphas of Individuality stay. Mammons' Cathedral is the First Celestial Bank of Heaven, where the angels of Equality handle the karamic and financial matters of the Symphony. To the northwest is a large collection of beautiful parks, home to Malphas, former Archangel of Diversity, now the Archangel of Individuality. His Cathedral is the Tree of Being, a colossal and beautiful tree with an endless amount of unique leaves, each representing a unique note in the Symphony. Here the angels of Individuality work hard to promote self-esteem, and a careful balance between healthy selfishness and angelic selflessness in humans. On the right side of the Eternal City are the Groves, a Domain that consists of large trees, mighty mountains and windy canyons. No one occupies the forests however. For in there are the Cathedrals of the Fallen Archangels Janus, and David. Also, to the south, in a small clearing of pure snow (that has since melted and turned muddy) is the cold and empty Castle of Purity, the abandoned Cathedral of the Fallen Uriel. A huge mountain stands over the abandoned entrances to the Catacombs, and this mountain is home to the dual Cathedrals of Magog and Beelzebub. At the base of the mountain is Magog's Cathedral, Death Mountain, where the angels of Fortitude weather incredibly harsh conditions, training all day in brutal conditions to make themselves as strong as possible. If you climb up the icy mountain and manage to reach it's peak, you'll find yourself in a rocky but grassy area, with quiet brooks and gentle waterfalls. At the peak is Sanctus, the Cathedral of Beelzebub, Archangel of Absolution. It is a giant pagoda, forever bathed in golden sunlight above the celestial clouds, where angels of Absolution work hard to find new ways to save the Fated and Redeem the "slaves of the Serpent" (as they call demons). To the north of Death Mountain, on a high and rocky cliff, is the red and white Castle of Valor, Cathedral to Baal. Here, soldier angels and Saints train everyday to fight the Horde, under the watchful eye of their Archangel. To the west of the Castle, beyond the abandoned treetops of Janus, is the Valley Discordia, a deep, ever changing and multicolored valley where the angels of Valefor, Archangel of Chaos reign. Here among the wild and windy crags, the angels of Chaos seek to keep the eternal flow of ever changing events going smoothly. They also passionately fight the minions of Janus, Demon Prince of the Storm, who seeks only to promote change for the worse. The last Cathedral in the Groves, and the most recent, is bravely nestled in the clearing in the center of the abandoned areas of the forest. Here lies a stark black and blue building, called The Academy, where the jack-booted and flannel-shirted angels of Zeal train themselves day after day to promote religious fervor and hatred for the Horde and it's evils. Furfur is the Archangel of this Cathedral, and the youngest Archangel in Heaven (only 20 years old!). To the north of the Groves, in the northeast corner of Heaven, are the Glades where the more peaceful Archangels make their home. It is almost entirely low rolling planes with bright fields of grass and flowers. In the west section is a small city made of wood and mud, and towering above the cities inhabitants is the Grand Hospital, home to Genubath, Archangel of Healing. Here, angels, Saints, and anyone else who bears a wound is treated to and healed, and there is endless research on new and better healing arts that can be used to heal the Host and it's allies. Behind the mighty Hospital is The Pharmacy, the modest and simple Cathedral of Fleurity, the Archangel of Medicine, and another young Archangel. Here, in the small white building and among the expansive plant gardens, her angels work to find new cures for disease, new drugs to help heal, and better substances to enhance performance and ease the pains of mankind. To the west of both these Cathedrals are the Halls of Joy, Cathedral to Haagenti, Archangel of Gusto. The large and welcoming log cabins go on for miles, sprawling in and out of the exercise centers, party halls and recreation centers. Angels of Gusto work there to help humans to enjoy life and do everything they can to LIVE it, but without harming others selfishly. In the very upper right corner of the Glades, and Heaven as a whole, is the Endless Ocean, the Cathedral of Vephar, Archangel of the Ocean. The ocean literally is endless, and an infinite amount of caves and grottos can be found among it's beautiful and bright shores. Oannes abandoned Cathedral is to the far right of the Ocean, it's cold and black grottos never visited... Stretching along the right side of Heaven is the Savannah. In the north tip lies the Eternal Fields, Cathedral of Makatiel, Archangel of Life. Billions of flowers, one for every human who has lived, bloom and grow here. IN the middle area of the Savannah is the abandoned campfire of Jordi, former Archangel of Animals... to the south though, is a beautiful field of pure white snow that can never be soiled. This is the Field of Purity, Cathedral to Legion, Archangel of Virtue, which is overlooked by the abandoned Castle of Purity on a cliff high above. To the south of the Field, bordering on the Vale, is the Memory Keep, Cathedral of Mariel, Archangel of Virtue. This mirror covered building is where the angels of Memory work hard to preserve the memories of all thing, lest the importance of God's work be lost. Lastly, on the southwest tip of Heaven is Beleth's side of the Marches, where a few other Archangels make their home. Foremost is Beleth, Archangel of Awe, where her Tower of Awe stands in mystical glory, reflecting the majesty of the Marches. The ruins of Beleth's former Tower of Dreams lay near Beleth's own. To the northwest of the Tower of Awe are the Pits of Fury, Cathedral of Belial, created right underneath the ruins of the Fallen Gabriel's Volcano... inside the fiery pits, angels of Fury train themselves to fight Hell and make sure that mankind doesn't "wuss out" when they get mad. *HEAVEN* -Eternal City- The Wall: Meserach (Diligence) Temple of Philia: Alaemon, formerly Gebbeleth (Trust) Palace of Eros: Andrealphus (Love) Grand Theatre: Kobal (Laughter) Metatron AM/FM Radio Station: Nybbas (Communication) Lilim Guildhouse: Lilith (Free Will) The Library: Yves (Destiny) Well of Souls: Saminga (Transcendence) Halls of Wisdom: Raphael (Knowledge, Fallen to Power) -Halls of Progress- The Grand Laboratory: Vapula (Science) Halls of Creation: Eli (Creation, Fallen to the Cancer) -Commerce Park- First Celestial Bank of Heaven: Mammon (Equality) Tree of Being: Malphas (Individuality, formerly Diversity) -The Groves- Valley Discordia: Valefor (Chaos) Castle of Valor: Baal (Valor) Death Mountain: Magog (Fortitude) Sanctus: Beelzebub (Absolution) The Academy: Furfur (Zeal) The Catacombs: David (Stone, Fallen to Assimilation) Treetops: Janus (the Wind, Fallen to the Storm) Castle of Purity: Uriel (Purity, Fallen to Perfection) -The Glades- Grand Hospital: Genubath (Healing) Halls of Joy: Haagenti (Gusto) The Pharmacy: Fleurity (Medicine) Endless Ocean: Vephar (the Ocean) The Grotto: Oannes (the Waters, Fallen to the Heavens) -Savannah- Eternal Fields: Makatiel (Life) Field of Purity: Legion (Virtue) Memory Keep: Mariel (Memory) The Bonfire: Jordi (Animals, Fallen to Genocide) -The Marches- Tower of Awe: Beleth (Awe, formerly Fear) Tower of Dreams: Blandine (Dreams, Fallen to Despair) Citadel of Fire: Gabriel (Fire, Fallen to Wrath) Pits of Fury: Belial (Fury) -Council Spires- Celestial Tribunal: Asmodeus (Justice), was Dominic's (Judgment, Fallen to Condemnation) Cathedral of Light: Lucifer (Light) --- Sirea, Free Cherub IST Destiny, Angel who Wanders, petitioner for the Word of Eternity (currently being ridden by Grapejuice, Renegade Shedite of the Game, and petitioner for the Word of Pranking Tightwads) ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #2852 ********************************
