Campaigns have to have a name? Mine doesn't. One of my players calls it IN: Philadelphia but he might as well call it IN: Princeton since the characters spend about an equal amount of time in each place. If your campaign has some obvious theme such as being a mixed angel/demon campaign, having all the celestials working for the same Superior, being a specialized team who find missing persons, protect politicians, guard a particular Tether, etc., then you have something to build a name on. If you approve, please give praise. If not, please give critique. Novalis, Demon Princess of Twilight "The world is in a calm twilight, comfortable in the still darkness." Novalis is the most pleasant Demon Princess you could possibly meet. And, in her own way, she's also the darkest. As the Cherub Angel of Flowers, she promoted peace and serenity her Word embodied. One would wonder why Michael made such an effort to get her to join his Rebellion, but the calculating and sinister Demon King appealed to her passive nature, saying that a world of bleak darkness would be preferable to the searing pain of Light; and so, she fell, and became the cold, callous Djinn she is today. She and her servitors seem pleasant from the start-of course, they are dark, but they do have a bit of brightness; they never yell, and rarely get angry. Inwardly, though, they take part in their Princess's nature; their souls are blacker than darkest night, like the calm before the storm. They try to maintain the status quo, while slowly bringing the world into Dark; Novalis knows that Twilight will precede eternal darkness, and a world of chaos-and she's waiting for is. Twilight is a passive word, the subtle backdrop of Darkness after light is diminishing. Her work is of a similar nature, slowly bringing the word to the Pit. She works closely with Kronos to drive the world darker, and spends much of her time combating the work of Lucifer, Archangel of Light, and Valefor, Archangel of Chaos. Combating Novalis is very frustrating to the Host, as she works in subtle ways difficult to combat directly. Novalis wouldn't have it any other way; you can't fight the Twilight; it's only a matter of time before it swallows the Light. DISSONANCE It's dissonant for a servitor of Twilight to be rash; they must be calm and generally non-violent, unless absolutely necessary. They must work in passive ways, and never show their anger. ATTUNEMENTS Balseraphs-Balseraphs serving Novalis emit an aura of darkness-these demons may make a Will roll to hide symphonic disturbance, at a penalty for ever note of disturbance. Djinn (Restricted)-Twilight envelops these Stalkers, keeping them from sight-they may sing the Corporeal Song of Shadows at no essence cost when they are following the subject of an attunement. Calabim (Restricted)-Novalis's Destroyers are comfortable in the darkness-after sunset, the Discord they take at the beginning of the game is reduced by their Celestial Forces. Novalis has few Calabim; they lack subtlety. Habbalah (Restricted)-Habbalah of Twilight have a special emotional effect, Dread; this makes the subject feel a constant impending danger of unknown nature, giving them a penalty to their will and perception rolls equal to the Habbalah's Ethereal Forces. Malakim-Novalis's Malakim have the ability to manipulate shadow, making it semi-solid. They can use this shadow to impede the progress of anyone walking in a shadowed area, making them move at half their speed for as long as the Malakite concentrates. Novalis has as few Malakim as she has Calabim; they're too rash. Dark Lilim (Restricted)-These Dark Tempters work from the safety of Darkness-if they fulfill someone's needs without their knowledge, they can use an intermediary, often a Soldier or servant, to collect their Geas for them, allowing them to work without being seen. Shedim (Restricted)-Shedim of Twilight can possess a person's shadow instead of the person themselves; this allows them to stay with a Host while corrupting it only twice per week instead of once per day, although it can't control the host's actions. Instead, with a Will roll, they can give the Host a dark suggestion, which the Host will then fulfill if he fails to resist. Impudites (Partially Restricted)-These pessimistic Takers have the job of instilling dread in humans; they gain a bonus equal to their Ethereal Forces to any roll to influence a depressed or worried human. Depressed humans are also less likely to spend essence, so they needn't charm a thoroughly depressed target-they can simply take the essence. Servitor Attunements The Quiet-A servitor with this attunement may spend one essence, become completely still, and become a shadow. They can blend into existing shadows, but a perception roll will let a careful observer know that something is amiss, although they won't know what. The demon can stay in shadow form indefinitely. Aura of Stillness-This allows a demon to spend three essence and fill the immediate area, three yards per Celestial Forces, with a sense of calm; no one will raise their voice, shout, or be violent. This will last half an hour. However, as time progresses, the atmosphere will Crescendo into a subtle panic; people present must make a will roll to avoid gaining a -1 penalty to their perception for every five minutes they spend in the aura, preoccupied by the dread they feel. Sunset-In the presence of any light source (lights being turned off, a fire burning out, etc.), a demon with this attunement may prevent one other light source from being seen the next day; a light bulb will burn out, clouds will cover a star, or a fire simply won't be able to start. This won't work on major light sources, such as the sun. Mask of Gloom-With three essence and half an hour, a servitor may make a mask, which, when brandished, will fill the area with a sense of depression; everyone in the immediate vicinity of the demon will be overcome with a melancholy similar to the Habbalah's sadness emotion for two hours. DISTINCTIONS Knight of Shadow-Novalis's Knights can inspire calm in any human they speak with for more than five minutes; the human will gain a penalty to their agility, precision, and perception equal to the demon's Ethereal Forces; they get a will roll to resist. This will last for thirty minutes after the demon finishes speaking. Captain of Darkness-Demons with this distinction can put out any light source smaller than a spotlight with a touch. Baron of Impending Doom-Barons of Twilight can keep ANY human calm no matter what is going on-they will simply be quiet and calm, and not react. RELATIONS- Novalis works closely with Blandine and Kronos, twilight being symbolic of both Despair and Fate. She likes Zadkiel for keeping humans from becoming excessive and violent, and Eli for filling the world with his Cancer. However, the more violent and passionate Princes are not on her good side-they disturb her stillness. The only Princes she cannot abide by are Gabriel and Khalid, as they rouse too much anger and chaos. Allied-Blandine, Kronos Assosiated-Zadkiel, Eli Hostile-Laurence, Dominic, Jordi, Janus Enemy-Gabriel, Khalid Base invocation-3 Modifiers 1-A source of light going out 2-A room filled with shadows 3-Just as the sun dips over the horizon 4-A human trying to reach a distant light in vain 5-Someone experiencing impending dread 6-5 or more People standing calm in the face of disaster-a car accident, a building exploding, a declaration of war, etc. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Jan 2003 19:38:52 -0600 From: "Prodigal" Subject: Re: IN> In Nomine List & Arisia... Enjoy. - -Vaughn * * * There was the signal. My signal. Gotham had need of me again. I am flowing from rooftop to rooftop like a shadow. Effortless. Fearless. The streets below are empty and cold. The sky above dark with clouds, only the pale light of the moon to guide my way. I have no need for light. I know where I am going. I have been there a thousand times on a thousand other nights. He will be waiting for me on the rooftop. With my mission. With the name of my prey. I live for these moments. When the shadow on the clouds calls me. It calls me to hunt, and every night I hunt, I grow stronger. I have trained my entire life for this purpose. I could do this all night. Sometimes I don't sleep for weeks. Evil never sleeps. I climb up the ladder where he is waiting for me. He is worried. Afraid. The mad man is lose again, and only I can stop him. The mad man. My nemesis. He who started it all. He took away my happiness, and I hate him for it. I hate all that he represents, and I must stop him before he does to someone else what he has done to me. What he has taken from me. A thunderclap tears through the cold night air. No. Not thunder. An explosion. Somewhere in the city the mad man works his lunacy. Through the rumbling echoes I can hear him. Laughing. Always laughing. I must go. I must find him before he destroys more lives. He will not escape me for I own the night. I take to the air and see the smoke of the explosion curling into the likeness of his face. His vanity is his weakness. He must always leave his mark. He is always trying to get my attention, trying to get a reaction from me. I am not laughing. There is nothing funny about his tragedies. I arrive at the waterfront and survey the scene from the beams of a nearby construction site. The warehouse is burning. The dock workers are trying to put out the fire, all attention on the flames. This is just a diversion. The real target will be nearby. Close enough where he can gloat. My senses warn me of the danger long before I hear the laughter. I am rolling even before there is even time to think. I see the bullets ricochet off the beams and turn to sparks. The muzzle flashes come from below. There. Behind the cement mixer. Typical coward. Hiding and striking from safety. I fire my grappling hook. Even before its claws wrap around the crane behind the mixer, I am diving off the ledge. He is firing again. I can see the flashes, but his weapon will not avail him. I am just too fast for him. I will have him soon. The crane is moving. Pulling me off target. No matter. He cannot escape that easily. I let go of the hook. Falling. I will land on top of the mixer and strike from above. No. The mixer is moving. How? I do not remember landing. Darkness is all around me, suffocating darkness. Echoes from the walls tell me I am in a tight space. Some kind of mud is weighing me down. No, not mud, cement. I remember now. I hear him laughing as the cement mixer begins to turn. A wall of cement crashes onto my back. Face in the muck. I cannot breath. Must escape. Must move. The cement is weighing me down. I cannot get out. The laughter is everywhere. I cannot hear anything but laughter. I cannot breath. The laughter is overwhelming. I am dying. I am not suppose to end in laughter... I am screaming. Someone is talking to me. Soothing me. Holding me. "It's was just a dream, honey. You're OK now. Shhh, It was all just a dream." I am trembling all over. Just a dream. Thank God it was all just a dream. I am just nervous. Knowing that I will face him. Tonight. How do I know that? He will be at the construction site. Yes. Just like in the dream. I will meet him there tonight, but he cannot hide from me. I am prepared. * * * "Did you read the paper?" He knows damned well I read the paper, but I will not give him the satisfaction of losing control. No, I have something far worse planned. "Stock prices are dropping again." "Yes, I suppose they are, but where's the challenge in that? Now here's something I can get behind." He wants to tell me of his success. By all means, damn thyself. "What is that?" "Well... it says here that a construction worker, one Bruce Mason, had a rather nasty falling out with his boss last night. Stuffed him into a cement mixer and turned it on..." Look at that smile. He is not even trying to hide his hand in this. He has crossed the line for the last time. Not even He can protect him this time. "Gruesome, but hardly original, and not really all that funny either." "Ah, but you judge too early, sir. There is more to the story, which you have not heard." I know much more than you think, but am I impressed that you could keep me ignorant as long as you did. Someone will pay for that mistake. "Go on." "Bruce had an alternate identity you see. A secret identity you might call it. An identity that involved dressing in tights and a cape and relentlessly pursuing his evil nemesis. Why I do believe that poor Bruce thought he was... Batman." How juvenile. It is just like him. "And? I fail to see how the ranting of a deluded simpleton make a great story." She knows that we are here. She is coming. "Oh, I heard a thing or two that didn't make it into the papers. Like that this 'deluded simpleton' as you call him, had friends in high places. And not just your average run-of-the-mill friends in high places neither. No. Old Bruce here was to be something special. You might say that he was the foundation of a bridge. A bridge whose plans someone rather artfully redesigned." "And just how were these plans... redesigned?" She is here. "Someone took something which did not belong to them..." "Ah Bella, you are as beautiful as ever, but you can always hope for a better tomorrow." "You dare to speak of hope..." She must not kill him. Not here and not now. "We can add it to our list of grievances, Lady, and can I assure you there will be a reckoning. Go order something, and join us once you have had time to ... wake up." "Yeah, go scare up some coffee for us. My cup is running dry." Her wrath will be all the sweeter if she must wait. "I can see that you are quite proud of yourself. Have you considered her reaction to all this?" "Her? She's just jealous she didn't think of this idea first. But really, this was a part I was born to play. Frankly, I regret not acting on it earlier, but I am my own worst critic." Not for long. "Yes, well, I have a review of my own. One that I have waited a very long time to deliver. You are nothing but an amateur and your antics hardly more than a distraction. I have only tolerated you because it was His whim for me to do so, but now you have crossed a line that even He cannot ignore. Not only have you destroyed plans of mine that you could not hope to understand, but you have crossed, unbidden, into the Realm claimed by another. That is a violation of our rules, and you know what happens to those who break the rules." Time to play your part, Lady. I do so love watching her work. "Are you afraid, buffoon? You should be. Since you enjoyed playing dress up so much last night, I have something for you to wear on our trip home." Yes, I see that he recognizes the chains she lays before him. "Bella, I never knew you were so... kinky. I have to stop by the Tower more often. Rawr." "He is trying my patience, Lord." And he will have all of eternity to regret it my Lady. "Put those on. I assure you that refusal is not an option." "Old man, you're forgetting the rules. Rules aren't your Game. Why if I had broken the rules, we'd be hearing sirens all around us right now. And you know about sirens don't you? They drive men to their doom." He is up to something. "The only doom to be had here, fool, is your own. Put those on. Now." "While I appreciate the gift, I really don't deserve all the credit. In fact, I don't think I can accept your offering in good conscious unless you are willing to give one to him as well." Him? Who is he talking about? No, it can't be. "Bright Lo..." "Let us dispense with the formalities, Kronenfeld. What a surprise to see everyone here. I guess I am not the only one who cannot resist the temptation of a good cup of coffee in the morning. I trust everyone approves of my new project?" "New project, Luc... Lucius?" Your master cannot protect you forever. "Yes, it is a study in cooperation, although enlightened self-interest might be a better term. Cob here came to me with the most delightful idea to test it out, and I must say it has worked out much better than I expected. Do you agree, Bel?" "Yes, your plan was full of surprises, Lucius. I never knew... Cob... could use my realm so effectively." "Bel here was just thinking of the right thank you gift when you arrived, Lucius." "I am sure Bel giving you free reign in her realm is gift enough, Cob. Let us not be too greedy... yet." No. He cannot escape so easily. "Lucius, I had plans for..." "Yes, I know Kronenfeld, but I have plans of my own, and Cob's idea helped me where yours did not. You do not mind the change, do you?" "No, I will..." "Good, good. And you Bel?" "I should be the one doing this plan. It is my..." "Bel, I think Cob here did a fine job. Besides, while any clown can put on a cape and call himself Batman, there is and can only ever be one Joker." "Don't worry Bel. If you want, I'll let you play Harlequin..." Kobal's laughter was overwhelming. Even now I can hear that God forsaken laugh. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jan 2003 12:19:13 +0800 From: "Janet Anderson" Subject: Re: IN> The Place: Arisia. > You tempt me to try to get everyone together again for a sequel next year... Well, not really (SILLY). (Crossposted to Pyramid) Hey, we've all been there. Comments welcome. :) Moe Go Ahead, Break Your Mother's Heart (Divine Fire, Dreams, Flowers, Judgement, Protection) This Attunement is never given out lightly. Let me repeat: it is never given out lightly. It may be necessary enough for it to exist (as five Superiors have - reluctantly - concluded), but that doesn't mean that it's enthusiastically endorsed. Quite the contrary, really. GABYMH is otherwise commonly known as Guilt Trip. Someone with this Attunement is capable of taking any existing shreds of guilt and shame that exist in the target to bloom into full intensity. This has the practical effect of making the target exceptionably amenable to following the desires of the user: treat this as a successful reaction roll with a CD equal to the user's Celestial Forces. It should be expressly stated that PCs do not get any sort of mystical free ride when it comes to this Attunement. The effects last until the target fulfills one stated wish of the user, to the user's satisfaction. PCs get no free ride on that, either. Yes, this sounds like precisely the sort of thing that Habbalah would enjoy doing. Don't think that people haven't noticed that (one reason why it's not that common). Of course, there are indeed differences between GABYMH and the Habbalite resonance. First off, it only works on a target that the user has a legitimate, positive personal relationship with (at least at the level of 'personal friend'). Second, this Attunement cannot be used to force the target to do something evil, or not in his or her best interests. Third, and most importantly, there is a carrot to the stick: someone affected by this Attunement that fulfills the user's wish will be rewarded by the Symphony with 2 Essence for being a good [insert endearment here]. Well, there is a fourth: a successful Will roll by an angel (mortals can't resist) will negate this Attunement... at the cost of 4d6 Body Hits to the user (other supernatural entities can resist without negative effects on the user). Every member of the Host knows about the last part, too, and aren't shy about commenting unfavorably (at least) about anyone who would be so heartless. All in all, it really isn't the same as a Habbalite resonance. You disagree? Fine: in that case, I suggest that you go and tell your mom that she's a Habbalite. What, you've suddenly decided to change your mind? After all, from their point of view it's a wonderfully efficient method of negative reinforcement. Wrongs are the mirror images of Rites: a sufferer from them loses Essence whenever he, she or it performs a particular action that is contrary (but not necessarily dissonant) to the Word that the celestial serves. Each level of Wrongs gives the celestial two conditions that, if performed, drains one Essence per day per specific condition: if the celestial has insufficient Essence, he, she or it will take 2d6 Soul Hits instead. The GM always chooses these conditions, and is encouraged to be as creative about assessing when a Wrong has been perpetuated as players are about claiming when a Rite has been fulfilled. For example, a Servitor of War acquires Wrongs/1. The GM decides that the conditions are "Don't stand up to evil" and "Support peace at a cost to the innocent" (neither of which are automatically dissonant for normal Servitors of War, but not conducive to Michael's mindset either). If the Servitor then walks past someone bullying another without doing anything about it, he loses an Essence (but only one, no matter how many acts of bullying he ignores that day). Participating (or just not stopping) a peace demonstration against a war might also be worth the loss of one Essence, depending on the war. Not shooting any power-mad dictator that happens to be within range would almost certainly be worth the loss of two Essence. As the above might suggest, this Discord is indifferent to political considerations, legitimate interpretations, personal safety, mission parameters and just about everything else. Furthermore, celestials that have perpetuated a Wrong suffer the usual Celestial Discord penalty on their next daily attempt to regenerate Essence. Reaction Modifiers: Thankfully, most Superiors don't actually react especially badly to someone with Wrongs/1 to 2 (although they'll be a bit reluctant to remove it). The Inquisition and the Game don't even take special pains to bother sufferers from it (probably because the universe is doing such a marvelous job on its own in punishing the sufferer). That's for somebody with Wrongs/1 to 2. Wrongs/3 and above is worth -3/level. There's a difference between being screwing up and being a screw-up. ===== Liber Licentiae Moeticae: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Last updated 09/18/02 (this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? How about "THE ATTACK OF THE FUNKYTOWN DOOM BOYS!!!!" I have no idea what it would be about. Any background, any idea. Well, I've used Mirror Symphony for what Sirea calls INverse. My on-again-off-again (currently off, alas) San Antonio-base campaign is Lone Star Falling. =====

It's hard to provide a name for *your* campaign without knowing what it's about. Our (non-IN) campaigns are logged, and the log titles are of the form [campaign] log #: [session title] Examples: Oz log 1: Diplomats in Oz Oz log 2: A Quiet Afternoon Oz log 3: On to Ancient Oz Oz log 4: Tygers in the Night Our general rule (adopted unconsciously) appears to be to name the campaign after the main setting. Once, when they were jaunting about on a spaceship, they named it after the ship. Not to say I don't like playing, but being a GM just appeals more to my control freak nature. I'm not saying I'll be at Arisia next year, though that'd be nice. - -- Casca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jan 2003 09:31:03 -0800 (PST) From: rob scwalen Subject: IN> The INverse heirarchy? i recently read a few submissions of superiors for an INverse campaign and i was intrigued, i was wondering if i could get a list of the superiors and there words for each side, also i was wondering what caused Micheal to fall instead of Lucifer in this campaign? __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
