This seemed too cheap to me - if you compare the costs against buying skills, this is pretty justifiable. But then I saw just how easy it is to lose Forces in celestial combat. So now I'm inclining towards the high prices for buying yourself up beyond your previous highest point, and the low prices for buying yourself back after force-loss. This seemed too cheap to me IIRC, the price break is a reward for delaying gratification. =====

While one of the demons may be dead, the other six still stood, and not one of them looked pleased with the panicked Oafnite. Pushing his resonance, he sought for the closest safe haven, and by the grace of God he felt the Symphony pulling him to what his resonance told him was a nearby Tether! Pushing past the crowds of people, Hodriul wondered why there was a Tether here he didn't know about. Then he spotted it. A small dusty library on the side street, doors lit only by a few solitary candles. Shedding his corporeal form, the Wheel blazed through the doors just as he felt the demons turn the corner and make a rush for him. He had precious few seconds left, and he burnt all the Essence he had to make it to the locus in time. The Light of Heaven bathed him, and he rose to his home just as the now-celestial Calabim flew through the walls, bearing down on him... Hodriul opened his eyes, and found himself in an unfamiliar place. He was in a small room made of pure crystal, in which his fiery form was reflected a million times. No light came into this place, and Hodriul worried for one brief second if some dark force had intervened and sent him to Hell. The Wheel did his best to get out of wherever he was, and soon found a long passage that led to a source of bright light. Spinning with joy, he flew from the dark chambers, and found himself once more in Heaven's skies, safe and sound. Turning, he looked down, and froze in place, cold with terror. The crystal dome of Lucifer's former Cathedral glittered in the celestial sun, and Hodriul realized what had happened. He had Ascended though a Tether of Light. *PHANTOM TETHERS* They remain a rarity, and a well kept secret among angel and demon alike. Few enjoy speaking of them, and being in the prescence of one has driven many celestials to tears with the overwhelming sadness of what they represent. Occuring every once in a great while, lasting for maybe a few minutes, or even years at a time, are Phantom Tethers. They are Tethers that spontaneously form just like regular Tethers... but to a Word that has Fallen or been long since soul-dead. In a small run down city, in the back roads on the northern side, an old couple lives together, where they have been married for 50 years. They love each other dearly, and have always helped one another through the diffucult years they have suffered, yet stay happy. In a small garden outside their house, a Tether to Love blossoms. In a small community, the resovoir is infected with a deadly parasite that makes the whole town sick, killing thousands. Where the super virus is born, a Tether to Disease infects the lake. A man witnesses a crime in progress, and against his better judgment, he bravely attacks the criminal, who stabs him with a knife, but also falls and breaks his ankle, and is later apprehended by the cops. The man survives, and where he fell, a Tether to Valor burns brightly. A small girl is born with a severe learning disability. But, through her own force of will and with the help of others, she strives to overcome it and teach herself all she can. One day, she succeeds. Where she reads her first book, a Tether to Knowledge comes to life. In Argentina, a young woman fights for the freedom of the oppresed people. She meets a man who also fights, and though they do not speak each others language, and come from different worlds, something blossoms in them both, and they fall in love, fighting together. In the park where they made love to each other, a Tether to Diversity springs forth. Phantom Tethers are different from regular Tethers in the following way- for one, they never have more than 3 Word Forces, and are always small in size. They -cannot- be stabilized by a Superior (though some say that a Superior who formerly held the Word the Tether comes from might be able to...). They give off no noise that can be heard by a normal celestial- only Grigori, Superiors, and those -looking- for a Phantom Tether can hear it. Lastly, though a celestial may go through it, it is not guarenteed that they will pull all the way through, or that the Tether will stay together from being used. Some celestials have been sent to Limbo, the Far Marches, or... elsewhere, when using these Tethers. Some remain well kept secrets, and many Superiors do their best to keep them together to be used as an ace-in-the-hole. And some, especially those who were once connected to the Word, see it as a sign of hope that the Superior, even if Fallen or long dead, may one day return home... --- Sirea, Free Cherub IST Destiny, Angel who Wanders, petitioner for the Word of Eternity (currently being ridden by Grapejuice, Renegade Shedite of the Game, and petitioner for the Word of Pranking Tightwads) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2003 18:39:40 -0700 From: sirea@softhome.net Subject: Re: IN> INverse Superior: (Part II) Laurence, Impudite Demon Prince of the Blade >> Michael, thou art a far wiser gamer than I. > > Nah, I just have more experience with power gamers. I've been far too long away from the gaming scene to remember just how audacious and numerous in number are those gamers who are out to rack up kills, and not roleplay, which is what I value far over the munchkin factor of gaming. I leave powergaming for my video games :D The mental circuit breaker is appreciated. If anyone ever game tests this stuff... please, give me feedback about it, so I can slowly but surely keep INverse revised and working well. It's ambitious, but I want to try to make it a companion online book to the canon core rules book, and nothing less than perfection is what I want. But on topic, yeah, people will stack them bonuses like there's no tomorrow :D (Sheidte of the Blade with 6 Corporeal Forces possess a great sword with a power of 5, and then uses the Blade Blessing for a total power of 16... eeek.) --- Sirea, Free Cherub IST Destiny, Angel who Wanders, petitioner for the Word of Eternity (currently being ridden by Grapejuice, Renegade Shedite of the Game, and petitioner for the Word of Pranking Tightwads) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 2003 06:55:54 -0500 From: BC Petery Subject: IN> Fluerty, Impudie Prince of Drugs? > "What, you mean you - the Demon Prince of Drugs - couldn't convince someone > to take a hit without using your mojo?" If you want to keep control of your PC's statistics maybe they should have to to to their Superior and ask if they can become stronger or more perceptive (ummm). After all if you're a Mercurian of Zadkiel masquerading as a Operator on a Suicide Helpline then you need a pretty good reason to be uping your strength to ten.... _________________________________________________________________ It's fast, it's easy and it's free. Even in my darkest, I wouldn't go that far... As a new GM to the whole IN universe I'm not the best to give advise (it's not going to stop me though) but I see a "dark" game and a "horror" game as two different things. I've been running a lot of White Wolf World of Darkness games of late and In Nomine is giving me an opportunity to run something a bit "lighter". Yes I could start a dark campaign with a Tether of Christopher being destroyed because of horrendous child-rape but I'm not going to. Just read what the diabolicals in LA get up to (see Fall of the Malakim) if you want dark (enough to turn my stomach). Horror is something else. Having a boo-jump-out-of-the-closet horror game could be fun. Imagine a Shedite of Nybbas possessing different students on Halloween. This could be a fun Scream-esque game. Turn it on it's head and it could be a horrific psycological thriller or detective mystery. If you truly want to have some fun it could even become a rip-off of a Buffy episode!! Dark stories with twists in the tale are always good. Have everyone thinking a Diabolical is behind a series of violent murders then make the culprit a Remnant Malakite who is seeing "demons" everywhere he goes. Making a game "dark" doesn't make it horror. The real world is "dark" (just open a newspaper and have a read). Horror is something else. Now where did I put that chainsaw and hockey mask? :) _________________________________________________________________ Stay in touch with absent friends - get MSN Messenger http://messenger.msn.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 2003 16:28:26 +0000 From: "Paul Kidd" Subject: Re: IN> Campaign Flavor- Phantom Tethers Fantastic idea. Loved the coloured text. Maybe rather then Phantom Tethers they could be Remnant Tethers. A Tether is only a proper Tether if it claimed and a Superior invests it with at least one force (I've bin doing my homework) otherwise they are just wild Tethers. I like the idea of a strong (say 30 Forces) Tether of Light slowly over the years dwindling to a 3 Force Tether. The Seneschal has been recalled. No demons are interested in it anymore. Who cares? Only the memory of the event that sparked its formation in the first place fuels its power(sniff, sniff). Kewl idea no matter how you look at it. _________________________________________________________________ Overloaded with spam? Of all the original Archangel’s, Michael’s Fall struck Baal the hardest. As the third Seraph created by God and the reigning Archangel of Valor, Baal held a unique perspective concerning his two older siblings, Lucifer and Michael. Baal admired them both, Michael most of all, and the Third Seraph spent many days seeking the council of the Firstborn and the Lightbringer as he championed the causes of his angelic brethren. When the time of the Fall came, Baal’s faith was shaken to its very core. Here stood Michael and Lucifer, two of the wisest beings in Baal’s eyes, speaking of rebellion against God. Many angels urged Baal to stand with his siblings, to champion the cause of all angels under Heavens sky, and bring victory to those who would mock the importance of the Firstborn. The pressure was immense… but Baal loved God. While he did not know why humans were so important, Baal understood that the corporeal realm was not his or any angels place, and that he would champion causes in Heaven and Heaven alone. Baal would not betray God, would not rise up against his fellow angels, no matter what Michael believed. He trusted his Creator implicitly. He could stand idle and watch the carnage unfold, or he could choose to stand against this, and make a difference in the conflict to come. Baal chose. The armies of Michael marched though the streets of the Eternal City that dark day, and Baal stood resolute with his followers to block the way. Michael had commanded his forces to stop, and walked up to Baal. With six eyes that burned like black suns, he told the Archangel of Valor to step aside, or forever earn the wrath of War. Baal stood his ground. With a black-fanged grin, Michael drew his axe, and the War of the Fall began. Baal fought with tears of white fire in his eyes as he felled those who had turned from God, and he felt his Word burn with a dark bent. The temptation to join Michael had been so strong before, but Baal now knew- Michael was gone, and a monster had taken his place. The battle drew to its bloody finale after several days, in the center of the Eternal City, under the glistening spires of Metatron’s Cathedral. Baal stood with Lucifer and several other Archangels, fighting the battle-mad Michael, whose celestial form was now blackened and dripping with the blood of the thousands he had slain. In a final act of desperation, Baal threw himself upon Michael, the Firstborn’s axe cutting deeply into his wings, and coiled himself tightly around the Fallen Archangel, as Lucifer delivered the final blow in a shining streak of light. Bloody and broken, Baal lifted his former brother from the ground, and called for God to cleanse Heaven of its impurities. Space and time warped, and Baal, still weeping, cast Michael down into the blackest depths of the celestial realm, and watched as all who had turned from Heaven were drawn into the eternal blackness. Slowly, the darkened skies of Heaven lit up, and Baal listened as the silence was broken as the first few angels began to weep, and then as all of Heaven was filled with the awful sobbing of those who had survived the slaughter. Baal helped Lucifer up, and they both walked to Jacobs Ladder, the Host trailing behind them, where Lucifer begged God forgiveness for having been so blind, for having been so prideful, for turning away from the very force that gave them being and purpose. Baal stared up the Ladder, whose top he could no longer see, for it was now dark. Valor was broken, heroes had become murderers, and innocent courage gave way to selfish bloodlust. His tears then became wailing sobs, joining the caphacony of grief around him. Baal had failed. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 00:45:20 +0800 From: "Janet Anderson" Subject: Re: IN> Campaign Flavor- Phantom Tethers I like this.
