The Colorado actually has a LOT more earthquake activity than people think of...traditionally, I gather, we get one `big' one about every hundred years, though there are little ones scattered around from things like pumping nuclear waste into the ground and draining the aquifers. But a really major shakeup on the West Coast, and particularly in the midst of something like Armageddon which is also setting them off independently, really SHOULD give Colorado a serious reminder that, hey, those big mountains we're so proud of are here for the same reason as every OTHER mountain range in the world; tectonic pressure. I'd suggest Saminga goes through and fills it with almost as many Vampires as he did in all of Rumania and see how long people there keep considering them `romantic'...] On that note of it, I'll just put in a quick emphasis on that, "...like pumping nuclear waste into the ground." They're ostensibly cleaning up Rocky Flats, but there're things likely to come out in the ground around here that'd make for unpleasant living...especially when you consider just how few lifeforms the climate here is actually suited for. (Some scrub grasses, mainly, and mountain lions do alright. There's -one- form of tree actually native in any significant numbers to the Colorado plain; everything else is an import.) We won't be underwater, though! Shaken, toxic, and with unlivable weather patterns, but...not underwater. That's Mile High Pride for ya. {Oh, what about Cheyenne Mountain? Most of the other AAs and DPs would keep their own agents and spies running hither and yon. A couple of ideas I had been tossing around was a Balseraph of Nybbas working as a new local talk-show host. In real life three of the biggest radio stations in Sac are controlled by a company called Chancellor communications. Chancellor owns the two big talk-radio stations (KFBK and KST), and a popular FM station 92.5 (light rock, pop). For those of you who don't rot your brains with talk radio, KFBK is the station that got Rush Limbaugh into the national limelight. Also, there is a chain of "adult" bookstores spread evenly throughout the area. Being originally from a small town in the midwest, I was rather stunned when, after moving three times, I found I was blocks from one of their branches. (If that doesn't SCREAM infernal influence, I don't know what does :) ). Their main store is in one of the more run down sections of downtown, near the railroad tracks, sort of a "one-stop-shopping superstore of smut", and a Tether into Hell. Portland is built essentially on the flats where the Wilamette River meets the Columbia River. The Columbia is extensively dammed for electric power. With the amount of tectonic activity involved in the Dark Victory, Portland will be pretty much toasted through flooding from broken dams. He'd heard of these creatures and decided he wanted one... or two thousand, or some number, he forgets. Anyway, he cobbled Forces together and molded flesh and got a skinny woolen creature about eight feet tall with large claws, large feet (nine toes on the right foot, eight on the left- unless the hidebehind is left-handed, in which case the reverse is true) and a total lack of any courage at all, ESPECIALLY when it knows it has been seen. A Hidebehind is so afraid of being seen that -it takes a Soul Hit every time someone sees it!- It's scared to death of Jerseys- if you find a Hidebehind, there won't be any Jerseys around for about twenty miles in any direction. Celestials and humans terrify it almost as badly, but it has a compulsion to stand directly behind them- as close as an inch!- without touching. It does this -only- when these people are alone with nobody around, so nobody sees the giant fluffy pink thing with large terrified eyes flinching back from the person it's walking in step behind... You -can- look at a Hidebehind using a mirror- the Hidebehind just assumes you're looking at a different Hidebehind. Their intelligence is only rudimentary- the following is a sample of what you'd get from one if you used a Song of Tongues on them. "No, I see nothing, not want to see nothing, I'm a good hidebehind, notseen, not -see.- You not see me, yes? Don'tlook, notsee me!" (Presumably Hidebehinds can bear to be seen by other Hidebehinds... their numbers are growing...) There has been only one case of an agressive Hidebehind... a specimen with three Celestial Forces became infatuated with a blind person living alone in upstate Kentucky. When a group of bandits barged in, the creature actually - -charged- them, scaring them off before they realized just how ineffectual a combatant it was. All other Hidebehind sightings have been peaceful affairs. Still, when you get the forboding feeling something is standing *right behind you*, you might want to check that hand-mirror... not everything that hides behind you is a Hidebehind... One of the players in my demon game (which hasn't started just yet) is a Shedim. Thinking about it last night, I have a few worries...the corruption and evil parts don't bug me a bit (I wouldn't be running a demon game if they did), but just game balance-wise... How is a group of angels supposed to deal with a Shedite in the body of some innocent 13-y/o? Any angel with half a heart won't just kill the poor kid to drive the demon out, and (barring Song of Possession or a nearby tether), there's no way to force out a Shedite. On that matter, if a Mercurian attacks that Shedite, do they gain dissonance? I mean, they ARE hurting a little kid who IS a part of the Symphony... Does it generate disturbance? If a Shedite inhabits some construction worker and you pump a few bullets into him, does the Symphony ring out? And finally, how DO you stop one in combat if there are mortals around? Let's assume the Shedite has 28 hits (my player has 40, but that's atypical for Shedim). You pump 21 points of damage into him with your Uzis; on his turn, he posesses someone else...if they're within line of sight, he can do it (maybe at a penalty, but most PCs buy around Will 10 for their Shedim anyways). So next turn, the angels will probably not even realize what happened (no disturbance, no visible effects), and will keep attacking the human until disturbance rings out (unless the answer to the above question is 'yes', in which case even THAT won't clue them). If and when they finally realize where the Shedite is, he's back to full hit points! I'm not going to just say "don't play one", because I like Shedim (and Kyriotates). I would just like some advice on keeping this Shedite under control when I have to... It lets celestials do the sort of damage that I think they should be able to do, it makes the combat tilted towards offense so you get a result and if you do the same with Ethereal and Celestial combat, where I believe fighting is the appropriate skill (John, Beth??) then it really sort out the celestials who have chosen to sepcialise in combat in one Plane, and makes those who can do it all even nastier. I realize no offense was intended, but I wanted to get that off my chest. End of rant. I now return you to your regularly scheduled mailing list. Christopher B. I may have to beef him up some before next session.<<< 21 Forces should be fine for a Duke. When I told Redneck that a demon who, as he described him, can crush PCs at will and is one of his Prince's most powerful Servitors on Earth, should probably be a Duke, I didn't mean to imply that ALL Dukes are at that power level. But given the power and influence this particular character was supposed to have, I was just surprised that he'd be a mere Baron. Again, there's no official correlation between Forces and ranking....there may well be a few Dukes with only 15 Forces or even less. They'd have to be very cunning and have some neat tricks up their sleeves. I'd say it depends a great deal on how "physical" the demon's organization is. Any Duke of Fire who isn't beefed up in a big way will be fat sizzling on the grill. But a Duke of Lust might be very modestly endowed (celestially! Jeez! ;)) but have so much cunning and influence that he runs a major segment of Andrealphus's organization. He doesn't *get* in slugfests with demons that have more Forces... Cases in point: Hamet, the Duke of Secrets in "Feast of Blades". He's only 15 Forces. Furfur, a Baron, is also 15 Forces before he becomes a Prince. Looking at their character sheets, you'll see that Hamet actually has considerably more skills, Songs and attunements than Furfur. But in a fight, Hamet would probably get waxed, because all of Furfur's skills, Songs and attunements have a heavy combat orientation, while few of Hamet's do. You better believe you need some serious ass-kicking ability to climb the ladder in Belial's organization. Hamet serves a minor Prince who is very much NOT into direct confrontations, so he can get away with having fewer Forces. But you'd also better believe that a Duke of Secrets isn't going to GET in a fight with a Baron of Fire....no, if he decided to go up against Furfur (again, this is all pre-Prince Furfur) he'd use all of the experience and resources and wiles he possesses as a Duke of Secrets. Furfur wouldn't have a chance, because he'd never even see his adversary.... - -David ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 19:53:29 -0600 (CST) From: redneck@txdirect.net (Redneck Gaijin) Subject: Re: IN>DV Mormons > I don't want to start a fight here, but . . . > > I have to say I kind of resent being labeled a >racist xenophobe simply by virtue of my religion. The Seagull Society are a militant pro-Heaven group based in Utah. Though they are mostly Mormon, they are in IN proper a fairly small group and the Mormon Church has distanced itself from their actions and stances. The Seagulls bear about as much relevance to Mormonism as the KKK does to Baptists, Methodists and Lutherans, IMHO. Maybe less. In DV, the Seagulls will help defend Deseret (Mormon-ruled Utah), but not all Mormons in arms are Seagulls, and not all Seagulls are Mormons. The Seagulls have a significant white-supremacy minority, almost a majority. They do not allow non-whites or females to join. For more information on the Seagull Society, check out 'Night Music.' Again, the Seagull Society is not meant to be synonymous to Mormonism.
