(drum roll......) _______________________________________________________________________ Vagarog, Demon Prince Of Recklessness From humble beginnings as a Knight of Vapula, Vagarog gained his Word after aiding several humans in the invention of gunpowder (a substance which has caused far too much suffering for Heaven's taste). Vagarog originally requested the Word Gunpowder, but, on a whim of the Dark Lord, was instead granted Recklessness. Needless to say, The Prince Of Technology dreaded having the Demon Of Recklessness working in Hell's R&D department. Vagarog quickly proved his usefulness, however, working diligently to aid mortals in developing repeater rifles and several wonderful types of bombs. One of Vagarog's greatest early achievements came in assissting humans in the creation of the automobile. Hurling around in these two ton steel machines of death, people grew more and more reckless. As auto death tolls rose, Vagarog gained in power. Vagarog gained his Princedom (Princehood?) during the Korean war, when an American pilot attempted to perform a barrel roll before landing. The resultant crash into the flight control tower and explosion of fuel reserves caused the loss of twelve troop planes, seven food transports, and a total of 2,300 lives. The delay in supply convoys prolonged the war for over a year. Lucifer was so delighted that he immediately granted Vagarog his own Principality. Vagarog is the new kid on the demonic block. His Word is steadily growing in power as mortals discover such joys as bungee jumping, parasailing, demolition derbies, and professional hockey. Being a Calabim, Vagarog dearly lovs the destruction so often caused by his Word. During his frequent times of relaxation, he can be found cackling with a soft, maniacal glee as a forty car pileup on some freeway clover causes humanity that much more misery. Politically, Vagarog is something of a slacker. He doesn't actively support anyone except Nybbas (the new guys like to stick together). He gets along well with Baal and Belial (for obvious enough reasons). His former master, Vapula, deeply resents Vagarog's success. The Prince of Technology, remembering the fate of the Prince Of Sloth (mmmmmmmmmmm.... Sloth.....) is now worried about payback attempts. Vagarog's success is one of the reasons Vapula banned Calabim from his service. His servitors have been instructed to thwart Vagarog's whenever possible. In reply, the demons under Recklessness have been told to be especially 'uncareful' near Vapula's high tech little toys. Vagarog is also on the bad side of Asmodeus, who feels that the prince Of Recklessness' lack of political ambition must mean he is plotting something. BAND ATTUNEMENTS Note: GMs should use their own judgment about what constitutes a 'reckless' act. Balseraph- Vagarog's balseraph's are especially adept at 'truth alteration' where danger levels are concerned. Whenever trying to convince someone that an activity is 'perfectly harmless', the demon may add his Celestial Forces to the target number of his Resonance roll. Djinn- Djinn serving Vagarog have the ability to tell whether or not an object of their atunement will be injured or killed as a result of a reckless action within 24 hours. These Djinn also gain the ability to extend the Servitor Attunement Wild Thang (see below) to any rolls benefitting an object of their attunement. Note that Djinn still have to purchase Wild Thang normally. Calabim- As the favored servants of Vagarog, these Calabim are granted increased 'control' (if such a term can be used) over the recklessness that is entropy. They may add their Celestial Forces to the check digit of any successful Resonance roll! Haballah- These demons are granted the ability to cause a target waves of reckless emotion. If successful, this ability causes the target to to proceed upon his/her course with little or no regard for personal safety. They also become highly susceptible to suggestion. Lilim- Vagarog's Tempters can treat a Geas as one level higher when 'calling in the favor,' as long as the request is something of a reckless nature ("Oh, you're so sweet. Now remember that favor you owe me? If you could just drive your car over that drawbridge....") Shedim- These Corrupters have a tendency to be even rougher on their hosts than usual. They gain an additional number of body hits equal to their Corporeal Forces plus their Strength immediately upon entering a host. When they leave, these hits are lost. Note that is this drops the host into negative hits, they may die and cause the Shedim a point of Dissonance. Impudites- Impudites in servoce to Vagarog gain the ability to steal Essence from a victim without charming them first, so long as the victim is engaged in a reckless activity (these guys often take Roles as sky-diving instructors) SERVITOR ATTUNEMENT Wild Thang- These demons always seem to pull out of dangerous situations at the last minute, whether it be swerving the motorcycle away from a tree or jumping from an out of control roller coaster. In any dangerous situation caused by their own reckless behavior, any Essence spent by the demon to increase his chance of success on a die roll counts as double. Note that this only applies to the demon's attempts to save their own hide, not anyone else (exception being the Djinn, see above). Basic Rites Run a red light at a busy intersection. Watch a human die of his own reckless behavior. Watch a group of ten or more humans dies as a result of someone else's reckless behavior. Convince someone to act recklessly, with an end result of over $100,000,000 in damage. (+2 Essence) RELATIONS Allied- Nybbas Neutral- Belial, Malphas, Baal Hostile- Asmodeus Enemy- Vapula Chance of Invocation- 2 Invocation modifiers: +1 A bungee cord. +2 A gun, carried fully loaded for twenty four hours with the safety off. +3 10 kilos of nitroglycerin +4 A traffic sign/light removed from a busy intersection +5 A traffic accident involving more than twenty vehicles +6 Site of a jumbo jet crash, with no survivors. ____________________________________________________________________________ ______ Well, there he is. This one had to happen. I haven't seen him on any web pages, so I don't know if anyone has already done this. I'm writing him basically off the top of my head, so no hard stats appear below. I'll try to fill in the blanks later. Leath. - -------------------------------------------------------------------- CUPID - ANGEL OF LOVE. Servant of Eli. This mischieveous little Angel has been around for many a millenia, appearing in many guises. The Cherub (obviously) appears suddenly near people who need a little love in their lives, so that he may attune himself to them more readily. Once attuned to his target he may automatically sense which people the target thinks he or she could most readily fall in love with. He then uses his Bow (see below) to cause these people to fall in love. Although he only really needs to shoot the object of his target's desires to cause a love bond to form, he usually shoots both to ensure that the love will last for a long time, therefore greatly furthering his Word. Cupid, while normally acting like a child, is an intellectual, and focuses on his targets gaining emotional and intellectual love, rather than simply the lustful love that is so fleeting (and serves Hell). Cupid has not seen his master for several hundred years now. Eli feels that Cupid is doing a fine job, and doesn't wish to disturb the Angel. If Cupid chooses to summon Eli, the attempt will be practically automatic (+1 modifier if over a year since last summoned, and the two haven't seen each other in close to 400 years), but he sees no reason to talk to his master at this time. In Celestial form, Cupid appears as a chubby human infant with small wings. He was a llittle less than careful during the renaissance period, and many gifted humans saw his celestial form, resulting in the portrayal of Cherubs as fat babies. The other Cherubim aren't overly impressed by this effort on Cupid's part, but the image seems to be permanently attached to human perception. Cupid's corporeal form is generally of a small child with a loveable face who gains the trust of adults instantly. His eyes express a wisdom beyond his (seemingly) young years. He also keeps a female Dove vessel, for keeping an eye on those lovers he has brought together. Althought the Symphony is supposed to dictate the ebb and flow of love bbetween humans, Cupid isn't above going back to his targets who are having a little trouble, and 'shooting' them again. He has also been reported to have an influence on the Destinies of some of the greatest lovers of all time, and many suspect that he has performed some services for Yves in the past. CUPID'S BOW- Celestial Artifact. This small, almost cute short-bow always appears in Cupid's hands when he assumes Celestial form. He may cause it to disappear at will, and may summon it just as easily. It is essentially a part of him, a gift from God when he was granted his Word. He can sense it's location, and almost never parts with it, but there have been occassions when he has allowed others to use it for his amusement. For a cost of 1 Essence, he may create an arrow for the Bow. This arrow is approximately 1 foot long, with pure white feathers on the shaft, and an arrow head in the shape and colour of a bright red heart symbol. Cupid may shoot this arrow at anyone he can see, and almost always hits (there have been memorable occasions when he missed, but no one really gets hurt, and it's all in the name of fun). If the target fails a Will roll with Cupid's Forces as a negative target modifier, they will fall madly in love with the first person they see for a duration of CD months. After this time hopefully real love will have developed and Cupid won't need to shoot the person again, but as noted above, he will if he has to. Over the years, Cupid has become rather adept at causing distractions to make sure that the target sees the right person after being shot, so as to avoid annoying mistakes. Another power of the Bow is that for the cost of 1 Essence, Cupid can cause the bow to take on a Corporeal form, similar to a celestial inhabiting a vessel. This form is identical to it's Celestial form. Cupid uses this power to occasionally summon the Bow to his Corporeal vessel, so that he doesn't cause as much noise. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ So there you have it. Just a quick outline. I'll try and get some numbers ideas, but I don't know if he actually needs them. If anyone has any thoughts, send them my way. Woo woo! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Mar 1997 00:12:49 +0000 From: "Bodhi" Subject: Re: IN> Disturbing the Symphony > Next question...Of those ordinary mortals, ignorant of the war, what stats > would you give to a typical policeman, and typical fireman? Actually, I think this question was dealt with a while ago. If I remember correctly, "regular" mortals come in a couple of sizes. Most mortals reach maturity with about 3 forces. The vast majority of them will gain another force later in life, through experience, and so on. Some of the more important/influential/experienced will gain a fifth force, and the very rare will gain a sixth force (through Celestial/Diabolical intervention, or through their own strength of character). If you think Policemen/Firemen are extremely experienced, then give them Five forces. If you think they're just regular schmoes, then give them four forces. Odds are they don't rank a mere 3 forces. Myself, I'd give them five forces. They tend to see a lot of life, and learn quite a few lessons, even if these lessons are subconscious. Their dedication to their work gives them a lot of character in my books... I'd say 5 forces is good. (suggestion... 3 corporeal, 1 ethereal, 1 celestial... they're known for being physical types, with just enough smarts to do their job well, and enough spirit to be highly dedicated). > Also regarding fate and destiny. Is a mortals fate fixed or ever changing? If > it is my fate to be a political lunatic who touches off a war, then is it a > given war or just any war that's handy? If I die and don't achieve fate or > destiny, then if I reincarnate will it be the same or can it change? Say > something happens to make achieving my destiny impossible, do I get a new > destiny? or am I eternally screwed? What an interesting question! Well, for my two cents, I'd say that a given individual's fate and destiny represent the type of life that they could lead should they choose to learn divergent lessons from their life experiences. Thus, Hitler could've learned to love life and enjoy it, and simply fulfilled his destiny as a painter. Instead, he learned the lesson that Life is a power struggle, to be Won and not to be enjoyed... thus he went on to almost fulfill his Fate as a maniacal Tyrant. Thus, if you learn One type of answers to Life's Questions, you go in the direction of your Destiny. If you learn the Other type of answers to Life's Questions, you go in the direction of your Fate. If you don't really learn the answers, but instead just mill around trying to figure it out, and never really commit yourself to one path or the other, you get re-incarnated to try it again. Only when you "choose a path" do you get locked into your destiny, or your fate. You can never NOT fulfill your Destiny/Fate, so long as you've committed yourself to a certain type of Lesson that you've learned from Life's Experiences. Thus, if you learn that "Life is supposed to be the dedication of your sacred honour to fulfilling the Public Trust", your destiny could be to become President. If "something happens" such that you cannot fulfill your ultimate destiny, you still dedicate your life to public office, you still learned the above-mentioned lesson, and you still fulfill at least a part of that lesson. Maybe you stop at Senator, or only Mayor of a City. However, you do that job with extreme dedication, pinache, and loyalty. You are a true Servant of the People, whether or not you achieve your maximum Destiny of "President". So in your "War" example, I guess you'd be a War-Monger, who gets involved in whatever war is available at the time. This merely represents the types of answers you chose to learn to Life's Questions, and the type of personality that developed accordingly. Whatever WAR happens to be brewing at your Time will be the war you get involved with. ... and if you never lean one way or the other, if you never really dedicate yourself to learning one type of Answer, you basically slip through this lifetime as one of the "boggled and the botched", and merely get re-incarnated again to see if you can make something of yourlself the next time around! Does this make sense to anybody else? Walk in Beauty, Rob Wolff / Bodhi rob@v-wave.com Nicholas Copernicus, Master Astronomer Stood up and Shouted, addressing the throng, "Abandon poor Ptolomy, Stand up and follow me, Heliocentrically, Ptolomy's Wrong!!" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Mar 1997 01:06:43 +0000 From: "Bodhi" Subject: IN> The Crow... yucky, non-original, stupid spin-off story Okay, here's an idea that I don't really like, but it's been knocking around in my head for an hour, now, and I can't get rid of it. I figure if I write it out I can exorcise it, and be done with it once and for all! Personally, I'm not fond of stealing ideas from movies, books, or what have you, but I figured I'd just get this one over with, okay? Read it once, discard it, and let me get back to work on my own stuff. This "creative retro-fitting" doesn't sit too well with me. NOTE: I apologize to all of those who liked the movie "The Crow". (... and I feel sorry for those who liked the sequel ;-) ). Adventure Seed: Hell hath no Fury like a Woman (... forget the "Scorned" part...the original was mis-translated...) Essentially, the PC's are hearing a lot of disturbance in the Symphony, and when they go to investigate, they find that a series of murders is occurring. The murders are all linked, through PC investigation, to an incident that occurred exactly one year ago. The murder victims all belong to a gang of thugs/gangsters/terrorists, who were involved in the rape/torture/murder of a young couple. The woman was raped and killed, and the man died in hospital a few hours later. Now, it seems, someone is coming out from hiding to wreak a little vengeance for the untimely deaths of these two young lovers, Eric Draven and his lover, Sarah. The PC's eventually discover that the murderer is, in fact, Sarah, the woman who was murdered a year ago. She has come back as a Revenant (see below, please). She has a mission to complete before she can return to her final reward, and that mission involves the murder of those that ruined her life. Thus, she has been given dispensation to finish off those that ended her Life and her Love, because killing these individuals is for the greater Good. The One who allowed her to come back, and gave her the ability to finish her enemies off, depends upon the GM's preference. I prefer Dominic. Some examples follow: A. Dominic, the Archangel of Justice, feels that a grave injustice has been done. As he is not normally a fan of such atypical measures, the PC's may be surprised to find that he has condoned this activity, and has supported Sarah in her Righteous and Just Vengeance. However, his motivation lies behind the fact that her actions will bring about a balance in the Cosmic Scales, and a furthering of the word of Justice. Her "marking her territory" after each kill means that people get the message that Justice has been served. If she strays from the path of Justice, then he will revoke her status. (although I'm not overly fond of Dominic sometimes, I can really get behind this version of the adventure, simply because it shows Dominic in a slightly more complex light than the one-dimensional Neo-Nazi that he sometimes appears as)... I know there are equally strong perspectives from which Dominic would never condone this sort of action, but I think that I'll choose to paint him in this light for this one, okay? B. Azrael, the angel of Vengeance, could be used as Sarah's superior. Fit the story accordingly. C. David, the Archangel of Stone, is a supporter of humans protecting and serving one another. Thus, he might be the one motivating Sarah. D. Michael, the Archangel of War, could be Sarah's Superior. ......... The PC's may attempt to help Sarah finish her job, if their personal motivations run parallel to hers. The PC's may attempt to destroy Sarah, if their personal motivations run opposite to hers. As well, different PC's in the party may feel differently about her, and this could be the most fun of all!!! Rules for Revenants Sometimes Bad things happen to Good people. If somebody is Wronged, and as a consequence dies, their story automatically catches the attention of certain high-ranking Celestials. Sometimes, the Wrong is so great that a Celestial will not sit idly by and let the transgression go unpunished. If this is the case, the Celestial may bring the mortal back, as a limited type of Soldier, known as a Revenant. A Revenant doesn't belong as part of the Symphony anymore. Their time has passed. Furthermore, they now generate Disturbance whenever they interfere with "regular" mortals, since these regular mortals are part of the Symphony and the Revenant is not. Sensitive individuals (like the spooky Sister in the movie) can sense the disturbance that the Revenant makes. A Revenant is given an extra Force for the duration of their earthly visit. This visit lasts exactly long enough to fulfill their mission, at which time they return to their final reward. If they fail in their mission, they are doomed to never rest again. Thus, unrestful spirits will gladly "cut a deal" with a Celestial to come back to Earth, right their personal Wrong, and then return to Heaven in a more restful state. However, upon their return, they know nothing of the time that they spent in Heaven. They return confused, alone, and filled with the pressing need to fulfill their mission. However, should they fail to complete their mission before they are destroyed, they will never again enter the kingdom of Heaven. A Revenant is given certain skills to help them fulfill their mission. A. The Revenant is taught the Corporeal Song of Healing, to be able to repair the damage done to their Corporeal Vessel while on in the Corporeal Realm agian. B. The Revenant is taught the Corporeal Song of Shields, to protect them from physical attacks while fulfilling their mission. The combination of these two songs makes the Revenant appear almost "unkillable", but in reality they are open to Ethereal and Celestial attacks. C. The Revenant is given a Familiar, which is a low-level Celestial in service to the Superior, Bound to an animal Vessel. This Familiar can transmit whatever they see to the Revenant. The Familiar doesn't communicate with the Revenant, except through a sort of Empathic link. Thus, the Familiar guides the Revenant during the early hours of their awakening, making sure that the Revenant fulfills their task. You could make the Familiar the weak link of the Revenant. Should the Familiar be killed, the Revenant loses the ability to perform the songs in question. Personally, this whole idea is getting too hokey for me... The Familiar could be a Crow, or a Cat, Dog, Snake, whatever... D. The Revenant gains two Rites, in order to generate essence for their mission, and to power the Songs they have been taught. The First Rite generates essence whenever they murder somebody who has Wronged them. Thus, killing a member of the Gang brings one point of essence to Sarah. The Second Rite generates essence whenever the Revenant leaves a symbol signifying the dedication of th above-mentioned killing to their Superior. Thus, leaving a symbol behind (such as a Crow form in blood, flaming lighter fluid, etc...) generates a second point of essence, since it furthers the word of the Superior by generating a "Buzz" in the community. You'd better be good, `cause there's somebody out there watchin' over us... E. The Revenant is given Fighting/6 and Ranged Weapon (pistol)(knife)/6 skills, to be able to kill their enemies. A Revenant's mission could be "kill all the members of the Gang that killed me" (like in The Crow), or it could be "Destroy the Corporation that murdered me" (lotsa bad movies about this...), or whatever. If GM's want to, I'm sure they can come up with various and sundry missions for different Revenants. However, once a Revenant's mission is fulfilled, they immediately go back to their final reward. The deal was simply to do one mission, then go Rest. They "Borrow" the power from a Superior, in exchange for furthering that Superior's Word during the course of the mission. They are NOT in it for the long haul. They do ONE mission, then they go back to heaven. NO PC Revenants!!! This sort of "not-living" person may trouble certain PC characters. Thus, while Sarah's mission may be "Just" or "Righteous", not everybody's gonna' stand for it. Yves is probably opposed to the whole thing. It shows a distinct lack of understanding, and an over-emphasis on the wrong sorts of Ideals. Novalis, Jordi, and Eli would probably view these sorts of creatures as "unnatural" in some way, and thus wouldn't support the creation of, or use or, Revenants. From my own ranks, I don't think Sunya, Amare', or Foucault would support Revenants, either. However, there are some Archangels for whom the Ends Justify the Means. For these Archangels, they would gladly create a short-term Revenant, even though it is a tad "unnatural", because the long-term gain outweighs the short-term problems. ____________________________ There you have it. "The Crow" now done for In Nomine fans. Thus, you could have PC's find out that there is a "night-stalker" out there, uncover the story, seek out and track down Sarah, and then ultimately decide whether to help her or destroy her. Lots of fun for fans of the movie, lots of chances for hokey role-playing and stylish gaming. As well, I'd like to emphasize that hopefully some of the PC's will be opposed to Sarah's coming back, so you could have intra-party conflict about whether or not Sarah should be helped, hindered, ignored, or destroyed! ... and of course, Sarah's gonna' be one messed up Lady, so the opportunity to play her single-minded, Darkly vengeful personality could be fun for a lot of GM's. _________________________ Good. That's over with. Now I can get back to some more original stuff. Blech!!! Thanks for your indulgence. Jean Miro - Renegade Undead, ex-servitor of Saminga Jean is a very experienced Soldier of Hell. Recruited just before WW1 he has had a long and reasonably distinguished career, as can be seen from his attumentments and distinction. A few years ago he opted out of further service to Saminga to try to seek a cure to his flawed immortality. In his quest he has sought out other Renegades and some Divine Celestials to try and find something that would ensure his eternal life. His original recruiter has followed him around dealing with the people Jean has uncovered, and gathering a fair amount of kudos. Jean appears to be in his early 30's tall, urbane and generally immaculately dressed with straight slicked back dark hair and an undisguiseable French accent. He likes to think that he is an expereinced and knowledgable player in the "Great Game", as he calls it, but in truth he is just a bit more fortunate than some others. Also his innate cowardice has saved his skin more than once. This rite is only effective for non-Celestials and is handed down from ancient Egyptian mummies. Discord - Cowardly 2, Gloating 1 (see below) New Discord - I hadn't seen this anywhere and thought it just had to be done. Gloating: Sufferer is a fearful gloater. When ever they gain an advantage over an opponent they will start to gloat reminding the opponent of how much better they are and how inferior the opponent is. Sufferer must make a Will roll at a negative equal to the level of the discord or gloat mindlessly. A successful Will roll lets the Gloater restrain himself for a number of minutes, or combat round if in combat, equal to the check digit. The Check digit of a failed roll indicates the length of the gloating fit as well as the degree to which the Sufferer becomes distracted from what is happening. On anything more than a 3 the Gloater may begin to give away vital information about his goals, actions and weaknesses. Thanking you for you indulgence. Yours Peter. "I use my Song of Healing on the wounded bystander." "The disruption to the Symphony could attract whoever injured him." "But I'll get to try to avoid it with my FaithHealer Role." How weird a role can you have? How about I take "Prophet of the Lord". It will be low status, because Prophets are never respected in their own time and country, and therefore not too expensive to take at a good level. You don't need any skills that I can think of and it is great for almost any Song or manifestation of power. "You just walked across that lake?" "Yeah I'm a Prophet of the Lord don't you know." "Oh well that's all right then." How about a Psycho Slasher? "You just slaughtered those four innocent people with a fire axe!!" "Yeah, but I'm a certified pschotic." "Oh well that must be all right then." Space Alien and New Age Mystic are similarly good for stuff, but perhaps not as direct. Thoughts and comments? Thanking you for you indulgence. Yours Peter. Dear List What happened to Purity and it's Angels after Uriel was removed from office. A few things have suggested themselves to me and I would be interested to hear what others think. Firstly there may not be too many ex-Servitors of Purity left around. The Angels of Purity were involved in a longish fight against the remaining major non-celestial forces. Given the passion with which this crusade was pursued, the nature of the foe and the desperate edge a fight for existance can give there might have been considerable casualties amongst Uriel's Host. Secondly they might have gone to work for other Archangels. Particularly Lawrence and Khalid. It is sort of in the nature of Angels to be part of a team so they might have just looked around for a new team to play with. Word-Bound who had worked for Uriel might also have chosen to try to further their Word without the support of an Archangel. Thirdly given our experience of Purity in the last few centuries has it turned more towards the Diabolic. A few of Uriel's Host might have gone over to the Dark Side, all the better to continue their Master's work now that Heaven has forsaken them. Alternatively an enterprising Demon might have picked up Purity as a useful weapon for Lucifer. Thanking you for your indulgence. Yours Peter. I can see a logic in this because anything that the Players buy is really with the approval of the person whom that power comes from. You can't force an Archangel to give you one of her Servitor Attunments or stop her taking it back if she really wants to. Is there any limit to this? Can Superiors strip their Servitors of Forces? Songs? Roles? Servants? Skills? Vessels? What can Outcasts and Renegades legitimately spend experience on as they no longer are part of this arrangement? And do they risk losing all those things that their Superior could take off them if they were still a Servitor? Thanking you for your indulgence. Yours Peter. Small point. I wouldn't get too tied down to the Forces thing. Work backwards to it. Just give your humans the stats you think they should have then and work their Forces back by dividing the total stats in each pair by 4. I would round halfs down and 3 quarters up. That means if you give a human "low-average" of 3 for everything they end up with 3 forces, one of each. And if you give them a couple of 4's "above average" or a 5 just below "excellent human" they get 2 forces in those areas, and consequently more total forces. If you are prepared to give your human one or more 2's "Poor" then he can have more 4's and 5's, or even a 6. Guess I am embroidering around it, what I mean to say is that you have to make the system work for you and not get caught working for the system. . Thanking you for your indulgence. Yours Peter.
