In my New York City campaign, the Empire State Building hosts a Tether that shifts from divine to infernal and back, depending on who has control of the city at the moment. A campaign feature that will probably be contradicted by official canon....but I am using it anyway. :) I have also placed a dozen Tethers in Manhattan, and several more in the outer boroughs....but New York City is defined (in my campaign) as THE most active city on Earth as far as celestials are concerned. Most large cities have only a couple of Tethers, while very old and important cities usually have several. - -David ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jun 1997 23:17:18 -0400 (EDT) From: Mark Kinney Subject: Re: IN> Ofanim to Calabim? "Tonight on Channel Ten Late Night News. Long distance swimmer breaks world record, Michael Jackson harrassed by look alike fan and the Missing Link or just another Hoax?" There are a number of hooks you can use to open this adventure. An Academic acquanitance of the characters' might put the information their way, they might hear about it on the news or in a local paper, they might hear some disturbances in the Symphony or they might get some inside word through a Celestial contact. From a Corporeal contact the Characters will be told that evidence is mounting that a "prehistoric" anthropoid is wandering the wilderness near to the character's City. Even the more serious and sceptical sources will be of the opinion that this is more than the usual hoax. Those close to the Wilderness might pick up faint disturbances in the Symphony of the type made by the focused use of Essence. If one of the characters has a connection to Laurence then he might be approached to assist with a "situation". The Celestial contact will tell the characters that an Angel suffering from Celestial Amnesia has projected himself to Earth in an unusual Vessel. Since he was under the care of Laurence's Servitors they would like him found and returned to Heaven as quietly as possible. What is going on Here. Once upon a time there was a Cherub of Uriel named Shinar. Shinar was a very old Servitor of Uriel having had a long career and being one of the small number of Angels who visited Earth before the rise of modern man. During Uriel's crusade Shinar had a number of his vessels destroyed and suffered some reduction of Celestial forces through clashes with pagan and impure spirits. The losses pushed Shinar deep into Trauma and in the reorganisation after Uriel's withdrawal his Heart was put in the care of Laurence, along with a number of others who were in tramua at the time. Recently Shinar recovered from his Trauma very confused. With the loss of over half his Celestial forces Shinar had lost a reasonable chunk of his memory and waking in a strange place decided to get out of there and figure it all out later on. He raced off into the Ethereal Marches where he lost his pursuers. Looking for a way off the Ethereal Plane Shinar wandered into the dreams of a group of teens on a camp who had been telling each other stories of the local "Bigfoot". Shinar followed the dreams back to the Corporeal Plane and took on the last vessel he has, a gigantopithicus. After awaking all the teens, and starting the rumours of a bigfoot/missing link Shinar lost himself in the wilderness. Finding himself back in a wilderness setting and in a vessel and role that brings back deep memories of his first experiences he has fallen into the role of protector of the lost and helpless. Unfortunately his reactions to some aspects of the modern era have drawn decidedly mixed attention. Where do we go from here. Well the rest of the adventure is basically finding Shinar and talking him in. Not too difficult if you are left alone. He will be very suspicious of anyone using Songs, not highly regarded in the neolithic era, or using modern technology (ie anything a person from 1 A.D. wouldn't recognise/understand). Besides that he is a very reasonable Celestial. The only thing likely to make him really jump is the news of the "ascension" of Uriel and anyone who harps on it might get a neolithic knuckle sandwich. Complications Mortals - There are a range of Mortals who may be in the Woods hunting the missing link / beastman. Scientists, media sensationalists, occultists and big game hunters might all put in an appearance. The characters should be trying to put them on the wrong track, and if possible provide them with answers to the sightings that they will accept. Celestials - Local Servitors of Jordi might not be happy about the characters tromping around their home, even if the situation is explained to them. The characters might also have to come between teh Jordites and some of the Mortals mentioned above. - Demons - drawn by the similar clues as the Characters. Perhaps sent by Asmodeus on a tip off. Servitors of Asmodeus could even be included in one of the groups of Mortals. Grigori - who better to find the lost Angel then those who where here when he was. It might be that the Grigori, or their Children, will be drawn to Shinar from some memory of relationships with Angels before they became corrupt. Aftermath If they have done well then Shinar will have been returned to Heaven to be re orientated and there will be no signs that anything unusual happened. More likely there will be some very confused Celestials and Mortals who will be trying to find out what happened and will be getting aroud to the characters to find out sooner or later. If they did get Shinar back, then he will remember them later, for good or bad, and they will likely have some sort of thanks from Laurence. But I think God is not just evil - He is *fair*. He is good to whom deserves goodness and evil to whom deserves it too. He has no moral. If he says 'Do that or I'll go berserk and destroy you,' and someone ignores Him, He goes berserk all right - but that's what was planned. God is surprised several times in the Bible (When Cain kills Abel, for example. He'd not forbidden murder yet, but He feels that what Cain did was wrong. Abel was the image of God, after all. Attacking him was the same as attacking God. That's why He went mad...), but He is always coherent from then on. At least IMHO... "Feel your Anger flow through you. Now you will feel the full power of the Force." Belial is not usually interested in emotion. Physical Fire has so much power to captivate that one hardly needs to go past it, but sometimes you get a Servitor who won't leave it alone and does such good work you have to recognise her. Such a Servitor was a Lil called Merq. Merq was used in a number of boring lowly assignments early in her career. Sat in a plain vessel watching Angels and Soldiers of God, but ordered not to do anything but watch. After a few of these assignments she got bored and started scanning her targets to see what their desires where. She found that many of them had very strong desires, especially the warriors. With a little bit of investigation Merq found that many people (and some Angels and Soldiers of God) have a tendancy to become so convinced of the rightness of their causes that they can be easily tempted to actions they would normally consider wrong. It became simple enough to arrange for a few basic Servants of Darkness to be fed to a Soldier of God and with a bit of practise Merq started piling up Geasa on a wide variety of Divine agents. Being an intelligent Lil, and a good trader, she quickly traded her flow of Geasa into a useful position with Belial, a lessening of the restrictions on her and eventually her Word. Merq has a long term plan to be free of all her chains, but at the moment is having too good a time getting and trading geasa. Merq has gathered a small number of Servitors, most of them Lil like her, but a few Balseraph and Habalah as well. Dissonance - Merq knows that her position relies on the fact that she has access to a valuable commodity, geasa particularly those on the "virtuous", and so she needs to keep people acting through Righteous Anger so her Lilim can bind them in new geasa. She requires that her Servitors prompt someone to act thoughtlessly or carelessly through Righteous Anger once every number of days equal to the Servitor's Celestial Forces. Attunement - Merq's Servitors can with a Perception Roll identify the Righteous. That is they can identify those who feel secure in the knowledge that what they do is right. Rites For One Essence - Kill an Innocent while consumed by Righteous Anger. For One Essence - Goad someone into committing an act more ignoble than any they have commited before. Horatio - Malakim of Gabrial, Scourge of Mass Murderers. Horatio is a force of destruction. He has served Gabrial for many centuries seeking out those who she nominates and destroying them. He is not particularly subtle or personable, sort of like a Cruise Missile. Horatio's favoured method of operation is to get close to the target (using the Ethereal song of Forms if necessary), to isolate them (and prompt others to leave) by setting the area on fire, to kill the target (after advising them of their sin), to devastate the area to reduce signs of Celestial involvement and then to escape by the Celestial song of Motion or just going Celestial. Outwardly a near perfect model of his Choir and Servitor of Gabrial, Horatio has several deep flaws. Firstly he is very proud of his special place amongst the Malakim of Fire. He regards his targets as being the most worthy of Heaven's Wrath and the most difficult of targets to deal with. Secondly he is beginning to love his work so much that he is seeing it as a thing in itself rather than a part of God's plan. Gabrial has used Horatio to deal mainly with mass murderers, and for this his approach has been reasonably effective. Horatio doe not know that Gabrial only sends him for a mass murderer after one of her other servants has failed to get proper contrition from them, and it would probably only make him prouder of his position if he was to find out. Introduction This adventure starts with the Characters hearing a vast disturbance in the Symphony with in their City. Those who investigate will find a community medical facility on fire and half demolished by some sort of explosion. The scene should be a fairly confronting one; dead and dying, injured survivors and stunned bystanders. Depending on how long the Characters take getting to the site there will be emergency services and media present. If the Characters do anything that gives a clue to their Celestial identity then as they leave the scene they will be approached by a tall athletic stranger who will ask them if they could assist him in stopping further incidents of this type. If the Characters can not get to the site, but later try to investigate they will cross paths with the same stranger. The Stranger is the Rahmiel the Angel of Mercy, a major Servitor of Dominic, see http:/www.sjgames.com/articles and look in the Rogues Gallery. He will tell them that a "manhunt" is soon to be organised by a number of Archangels against a wayward Servitor of Gabrial. The Angel in question is a Malakim who has "stumbled", but the Angel of Mercy feels sure that he has been led into error through his desire to do God's Work and would like the Characters to try to find the wayward Angel and bring him in before someone seeks a more permanent solution. Rahmiel can tell the Characters that the Angel they seek is Horatio, a Malakim of Fire, who has been Gabrial's Scourge of Mass Murderers for many centuries. He will counsel the characters against a direct physical confrontation with Horatio as he is in the ranks of Gabrial's most potent Malakim. Where do we go from there. The adventure should continue with the Characters trailing Horatio from one site of devastation to another. Given the size of the disturbances he makes to the Symphony it is not hard to see why certain Archangels (and Demon Princes) will want him stopped, nor is he that hard to follow. Horatio's targets vary, but not his tactics. He will hit a couple of prisons, seeking those convicted and confined by Mortal justice, and giving the opportunity for massive jail breaks. He might also go after the heads of some major companies and possibly some scientists. Good corporate targets for Horatio are tobacco and pharmaceutical companies, especially where those companies knowingly marketed products they knew would cause deaths. However, the majority of his targets will be doctors and medical facilities. What the Hell is happening here. Recently (by Celestial time) Horatio was wandering the edges of Gabrial's precinct of Heaven when he met another Celestial wandering the edges of Blandine's realm. The other Celestial said his name was Merq and he worked for Blandine soothing the dreams of those whose lives had been disturbed by the same mass murderers that Horatio hunted. Despite their other differences this close parallel of vocations prompted Horatio to strike up a friendship with Merq and they met to reminisce about evil doers who had met their proper reward. Knowing that his friend wanted no more than to punish those who truly deserved it and learning that Gabrial had for some reason chosen not to send Horatio to the Corporeal Plane for some time Merq made a suggestion to Horatio. Merq could show Horatio how to visit the Corporeal plane via a portal in Baleth's area of the Marches. In addition Merq knew how to gain strength from the pain suffered by the mass murderer's victims and could share that strength with Horatio to increase his ability to wreak vengeance on the unrighteous. Horatio accepted and, in thanks to his new friend, asked who his first target should be. Merq had no doubt, those who had caused the most suffering and the greatest slaughter of innocence were the Abortionists. Horatio was not immediately convinced, but after hearing Merq tell of the horrors suffered by those whose lives had been touched by these Murderers he agreed and left to remove this plague from the Corporeal Plane. What can the Characters do about it. There are two basic ways to catch up with Horatio; you can follow him across the landscape until he meets something that slows him down enough to let you catch up or you can stake out something he might hit til he does. If the Characters try to predict where Horatio might strike they will find that he seems to be operating relatively near to their City and that he is hitting more doctors and medical facilities than anything else. Some investigation will find that the medical facilities and people Horatio is devastating are involved in abortion. While pursuing Horatio the Characters might also have to deal with the aftermath of his actions. Coming on the scene of one of his visitations there are likely to be injured and dying to aid, Celestials (Divine and Diabolic) might be drawn by the disturbance and as the trail lengthens there could be other Celestials seeking Horatio for their own reasons or on orders of their Superiors. You might want to have the Characters encounter someone (Mortal or Celestial) who has witnessed one of Horatio's visitations so they know what sort of power he is throwing around. This should be a clue that something particularly odd is afoot. How the Characters are going to deal with Horatio, when they catch him, is upto them. I would suggest that direct confrontation is likely to be a failure, if they need further prompting away from this option remind them they were asked to do this by the Angel of Mercy. The resolution that springs to my mind is to get Horatio to use his resonance on himself. This should show him that in his rampage he has slain a number of innocent persons and should be sufficient revelation to get him to surrender. A surrendered Horatio pretty much brings the plot to an end, but hearing Horatio's story the Characters may decide to try to track down the mysterious Merq. This will require a trip through Baleth's Marches, accessible via the Portal Horatio used to get to the Corporeal Plane, to the edge of Belial's dominion. Horatio will be able to guide the Characters because of the flow of essence between himself and Merq. Depending on the temperament of your players you can then have a violent resolution with a number of Servitors of Belial and Merq, to make up for lack of action earlier in the adventure, or a more verbal facedown with an unrepentant Merq. Aftermath If successful the Characters will have stopped an out of control Celestial from doing harm while he was trying to do good. They will have the thanks of the Angel of Mercy and probably to a lesser extent the thanks of Gabrial and Horatio. They may have come to the attention of other Archangels as well, in either a positive or negative light. Loose Threads The Portal to the Ethereal Marches is somewhere near the Characters' City and may or may not be that easy to close. Gabrial will be looking to have someone else deal with Horatio's usual "Clients" for at least a while. Other Stuff I will post separately stats for Horatio and Merq, but to outline them briefly. Horatio is a veteran Malakim of Fire and has long been Gabrial's chosen punisher of Mass Murderers. He should be about 15 Forces, with all the bells and whistles. Merq is a major Servitor of Belial, a Lil, and the Demon of Righteous Anger. It is her vocation to fan the emotions of the righteous, especially warriors, until they fall from grace. She has one Rite that needs to be mentioned. For one Essence kill an innocent while consumed by Righteous Anger. This is the "strength of the victims" that she allowed Horatio access to. The one hang up your Players may find in this plot is How did Merq deceive Horatio about her Demonic nature in the First Place. Well Horatio was waiting to be deceived. He wanted to act more than he was concerned as to whether he acted correctly. Also they met not on the Celestial Plane, but in the Marches, which are the Ethereal Plane, where sometimes things are not what they appear to be. Even Kyrio's have limits on how many different beings they can control! - -- ___________________________________________________ / \ |John Karakash - Lucent Technologies (formerly AT&T) | | (919)380-4629 | | "A fundamental principle of economics is that the | | more you tax something, the less you get of it. | | In this country we tax success most of all." | \___________________________________________________/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jun 1997 09:26:45 -0400 From: "John Karakash - Lucent ASCC" Subject: Re: IN> Re: in_nomine-digest V1 #200 > <> > > Except that, IIRC, Austin's supposed to have 20 (!) tethers. > >(Can't wait to hear the explanation for that one...) > > > > Huh?! I'm not sure who said that, but wasn't another city supposed to have quite a few? How does Doc Savage cope with the changes of metaphysical landlord? His secret headquarters are on the 100th floor, you know. Any particular patch of ground can only have one Tether. There's a good reason... and it's going to be fun. - -- ___________________________________________________ / \ |John Karakash - Lucent Technologies (formerly AT&T) | | (919)380-4629 | | "A fundamental principle of economics is that the | | more you tax something, the less you get of it. | | In this country we tax success most of all." | \___________________________________________________/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Jun 1997 10:19:57 -0500 From: Earl Wajenberg Subject: Re: IN> Do the PCs know about forces? One reason I asked about the characters knowing about Forces is that the concept reminded me of the ten seferioth of the Kabbala. These are ten aspects of the divine, organized into a network structure called the "Tree of Life" and said to be a diagram of the Adam Kadmon, the archetypal human being. I know Forces are seferioth, but the seemed similar, and the seferioth are very definite, explicit, and individual things, comparable to the organs of the Adam Kadmon.
