If the players get there in time to do something, they get to face off with a gang of skinheads, led by a dark man in a leather jacket - this man actually performs _the_ action that defaces/destroys the Tether, and disappears in the blast of Celestial power, which should strew the PCs around the place. Who is the man in leather? A Malakite of David. Who are the gang? His Soldiers and followers. What's going on? Ah, that's more interesting. Alternatively, the above actions have already taken place, and the PCs are asked to look into it by Superiors (David, or their own bosses, or whoever the Tether belonged to.) What's Really Going On - ---------------------- Slugs of Vapula. Really. Your local dubious and unwise Scientific Laboratory (I'm sure there's one around) has been experimenting, with diabolical inspiration, with these slug-like creatures the size of a sausage or so, that can link to the brainstem and control a person's actions. These slugs could theoretically be controlled remotely. Wonderful. At least, the Shedites who are possessing the slugs think that it's wonderful. They're in the slug, the slug is in the human, and they're almost totally hidden. Also, no will struggle, as the slug controls the body autonomically, and they control the slug mentally. So we have a Balseraph of Vapula based in the Evil Lab, a Djinn of Vapula there guarding the Mother Slug (you know, the one that lays all the eggs, the _big_ one), a Lilim of Haagenti in a local diner (more on her later) and several Shedim of Vapula having fun. Their intentions: to trash the Heavenly Tether (doing/done), to establish (another, if there's already one) an Infernal Tether, to field-test the slugs, and to breed more. Assuming nothing goes wrong. ("If it weren't for those meddling kids and their Kyriotate!") So what happened? - ----------------- The Malakim and several of the gang were eating at the local diner (their usual hangout). The Lilim of Haagenti spiced their food with some slug eggs. At an appropriate later moment, the slugs seized control: during the confusion, one of the possessed gang managed to put a Nifty New Device on the Malakite, which stopped him going Celestial. Why is this important? Going Celestial dumps the slugs. It's the easy answer for Celestials, which is why they used this new and bug-ridden prototype to stop the Malakite doing it. Why did they send him in to trash the Tether (and thus lose their convenient Celestial guinea-pig)? They needed someone of Celestial Forces to do the final thing which stopped it being a Tether. (Suit to your campaign.) Where is the Malakite now? A Remnant. All his Forces gone, but the slug gone too. He's currently wandering the streets aimlessly, void of purpose or most of his memories. If the remains of the still-possessed Gang run into him, they'll do their best to kill him permanently. If found by the PCs, he has enough memories left to direct them to that diner that he remembers... Probable Events - --------------- The players are likely to find their way to the Diner: given that the Lilim of Haagenti hanging round there is not stupid, she'll notice obvious investigating Celestials, and _will_ recognise the Remnant Malakite if they're dragging him along. Cue (a) attempt to egg the PCs, and Malakite, if possible (a Lilim of Haagenti serves _good_ food, and they want to blend in, no?) and (b) probable arrival of gang to try and grab the Remnant, and (c) interference by Geased random bar members. It's a tough bar, with truckers, gangboys, the like. The Lilim has probably built up a few geases by now. This done, the players should possibly have as clues (a) a Lilim was around, (b) a squashed slug or two, (c) the Remnant, (d) an example of Vapulaic technology that stops someone taking Celestial Form - either from the ruins of the Tether, or from one of the gang-members who intended to use it on them, (e) the possible babblings of an overconfident Shedite, (f) anything else. Why build an Infernal Tether (the demons, that is)? Well, what better way to celebrate when you control a hapless (and tough) street-gang of David's? Hm, perhaps there's someone from Kobal's mob on their team too. Besides, it makes for a nice scene - possibly a good finale. Hopeful solutions involve removing the slugs from innocents, stopping an Infernal Tether being established, utterly trashing the Lab and the Slug Mother and any relevant documentation, and kicking those Demons back down to Hell. The first is likely to be the most awkward: possible solutions include (a) Celestial Healing, (b) earthly surgery, (c) some possible allergy of the slugs to a particular chemical or food, (d) using the tech that the slugs were originally bred to work with to order them to leave the bodies and then self-destruct. Ka-Splat. With thanks to the Archangel Beth, Tyler@Ambermush who created a certain set of slugs, and various films (you know which ones). Opinions welcome. Dear David, Kingsly and List I posted this sometime before, but for those who have joined us recently. What happened to Purity and it's Angels after Uriel was removed from office. A few things have suggested themselves to me and I would be interested to hear what others think. Firstly there may not be too many ex-Servitors of Purity left around. The Angels of Purity were involved in a longish fight against the remaining major non-celestial forces. Given the passion with which this crusade was pursued, the nature of the foe and the desperate edge a fight for existance can give there might have been considerable casualties amongst Uriel's Host. Secondly they might have gone to work for other Archangels. Particularly Lawrence and Khalid. It is sort of in the nature of Angels to be part of a team so they might have just looked around for a new team to play with. Word-Bound who had worked for Uriel might also have chosen to try to further their Word without the support of an Archangel. Thirdly given our experience of Purity in the last few centuries has it turned more towards the Diabolic. A few of Uriel's Host might have gone over to the Dark Side, all the better to continue their Master's work now that Heaven has forsaken them. Alternatively an enterprising Demon might have picked up Purity as a useful weapon for Lucifer. Thanking you for your indulgence. Yours Peter. I suggest the Device does the following, given a Celestial and a Celest Step 1: Remove all Ethereal Forces from the Subject, which are used to power the device for the following steps. The subject will then gain an Ethereal Discord. The machine prevents the subject from gaining troublesome Discords, namely Bound or Aura. All the other Ethereal Discords in the core book are permitted. Step 2: Destroy all Vessels the Subject has. Step 3: Bind the Celestial into a prepared Celestial Artifact, This artifact will function as a Vessel on Earth, and as the new Celestial Form while in Heaven or Hell. It also serves to hide the Subject's presence, such that the objectappears to be a perfectly normal artifact. Step 4: Apply the Bound Discord between the Subject and the Artifact. Apply sufficent levels to reduce the Subject's Will to zero when resisting commands from the holder of the artifact. And that's where Hell's Reliquaries come from. Removing only the Ethereal Forces tears away nearly all of the memory and personality, and the high levels of Bound are enough to reduce the Will of anybody but a Superior-Caliber Celestial low enough that he'll do anything the holder of the Artifact asks. The Vessel and the new Celestial Form are designed to Immobilize the Celestial on both planes, and cut it off from all sensory input, as Vapula would rather not have the converted soul of use to anyone if the process is ever succesfully reversed. All the lobotomized Celestial ever hears is the mental commands from its possessor, and it can't do a thing but comply. The average Human soul will suffice to make up to a Reliquary/3 or /4, the average Celestial will make a /5 or /6...and if Vapula wants one bigger, he takes one of his more disobedient Impudites and graciously allows him to keep his Attunement while he's being twisted into a Reliquary/12. And, if you want to get _really_ nasty with this sort of thing, you can allow the Celestial to continue to use his Resonance. This works better with Resonances that don't sense things, as the trapped celestial can't communicate. The Calabim Resonance can be used to break things, the Habbalah resonance can be used to force emotions on people, and the Impudite Resonance can be used to steal Essence. The only other problem with making this the standard manner of creating Reliquaries is that Celestials with Hearts will snap back there if the Artifact is destroyed. These artifacts might be constructed in a manner akin to the way Saminga creates undead, in that destroying the Artifact destroys the Soul. Barring that, the process could remove _all_ the Celestial Forces before killing the Vessels, and turn the subject into a Remnant. The Heart will then shatter, and the Machine can then replace the Celestial Forces once the subject has been successfully Bound. = http://www.io.com/~beholder ===================== nofori@pop3.utoled.edu === Nana-Yaw "The Fish" Ofori, Freelance Soldier of Heck, presenty serving Monty, Lilim Captain of Media, the Demon of Game Shows. ===== ><{{"> ============ "Life's a Fish, then you Fry." ======= <"}}>< ====== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 1997 09:49:41 +0300 (EET DST) From: Tapio Erola Subject: IN> Abyss&Redemption, Revised and Edited Here is the 2nd edition of these two. When demon starts to think about defection, she's just the person to talk to. She has solid 16 forces (as is befitting to angel this important) but she is not gunning for archangelhood. She also represents true repentance and redemption on mortals, persuading them to permanently change their ways. Her relations to her boss are good, and although there have been some rather spectacular failures, she does good job to merit this. She has a some distrust towards Dominic (Who she thinks is a little too hasty and sometimes denies being a chance to redeem himself). She is not above harboring a demon while negotiating with archangel(s) to arrange his final redemption. This distrust is mutual as Dominic keeps her under constant suspicion and surveillance for talking to demons but cannot deny the importance and usefulness of her office. She's little distrustful of Marc, due to his deal-making. It implies ulterior motives instead of true repentance. She appears as brown-haired, somewhat attractive woman wearing white-toned business suit. She exudes trustworthiness and help. The quintessential counselor, in legal and psychological sense. A real habbalah, he exceeds in emoting dark feelings and persuading his victims to take that fatal step... He appears as the quintessential smooth operator with engaging smile and _presence_. OK, it's often a good plan to splatter enemy celestials all over the countryside, but there's always more where they came from, and attacking *them* opens you up to their attacks in return. Risky. So the goal ought to be to deny the enemy some advantage that he gets from *having* the Tether. OK, well, what advantages might those be? Automatic ascension to Heaven/Hell, and... hmmm. There ought to be *some* advantage to a Tether. "A place of refuge and communion for its master's servitors and an earthly celebration of its master's Word", according to the rulebook. That seems to imply some pretty serious defenses, both corporeally and celestially. OK, you've got the Seneschal, who's probably the keystone of the defenses. Might he have certain artifacts to aid him in his defense, and Soldiers and more junior celestials to man those defenses? If so, what would seem reasonable? An entire platoon of Soldiers and a dozen assistant celestials seems excessive... Weapons would be logical, both mundane and celestial.
