The stadium has a capacity of 10,000 and was completed in time to host the 1923 Cup Final, when Bolton beat local boys West Ham. It was also the main venue for the 14th Olympic Games in 1948 - something England will never see again. For a long time this place, with all the camaraderie and team spirit one might associate with the national game, has been a tether to David; if one is strong enough, the tunnel that links the dressing rooms to the pitch might just take you to the Groves. Seneschal The angel of Wembley is a Kyriotate. When the game isn't being played, he inhabits the body of the groundskeeper who lovingly upkeep's the pitch to its famous standard. This way he avoids the entire boardroom BS that comes with maintaining a high profile football stadium. However, when a game is in progress, he likes to inhabit the members of the spectators in order to rouse some conflict - evens possessing the various teams (and even the ball). Anything that will help the groups come together- even if that means coming together against the other side (if a few bones get broken, so what). His special rite is: +1 Essence for encouraging a team of supporters to band together. (Usually at the expense of another team - but this of course will cause two groups to join, and gain the angel +2 Essence!) The Ministry of Sound (A Tether to Creation) One of London's premier nightclubs; the Ministry, like Wembley, is more on an establishment than a building with it's own clothing labels, records, etc. it promotes a wholesome atmosphere with its no alcohol policy and all the finest DJ's in the world have been known to play here. Due to Eli's friendliness with Novalis, the Flowery one has granted her Dancing Rite to the Seneschal of this tether who may bestow it as he sees fit. Seneschal Adam is the angel of Breakbeats, the seneschal of the Ministry. Not only that, but this Mercurian is the celestial offspring of Eli and Marianne (the Seneschal of Flowers at Kew). The 'child' was left in the hands of Marianne to be brought up (as if Eli could act the responsible father), and only her, Novalis and the Archangel of Creation know about this. As such, Adam is constantly in fear of Dominic's inquisitors finding out. He is one of the younger generation, those who are more comfortable in their dealings with demons, amongst other things. Adam maintains the tether as a peaceful sanctuary fir any celestial (and mortal) who just wants to forget their troubles and party on! Adam's special rite is: +1 Essence for causing people to forget their troubles by partying. (Adam also has Novalis' dancing rite as well.) Heathrow Airport (A Tether to the Wind) Heathrow is one of the world's busiest airports, and, tucked away in the Lost Property Department, is a tether to the peaks of the Groves, just remember where you left your bags though. With access to the constant air traffic and the chaos of an international airport, Janus' servants are perfectly at home here. Many servants of the wind can also be found hanging out in places like Covent Garden or Portobello road; in fact the street markets of London are a haven for many a fleet-fingered celestial, including those of Valefor of course. Seneschal Parker is the Cherub of the Wind who maintains this tether. His role as Lost Property Clark is modest and unassuming, all the better for him to move amongst the crowds unnoticed - and to slip away as his resonance dictates. He comes across as a thoroughbred Londoner from the East End, and is fond of talking in Cockney slang. Despite his streetwise arrogance (he knows how to get just about anywhere and fond anything - lost), he is helpful towards his fellow angels, if a little cheeky. His special rite, as the angel of Lost Property is: +1 Essence for deliberately taking someone else's luggage in place of your own (this may be increased if the luggage was supposed to arrive in a place as far from London as possible, say New Zealand!). As the angel of Lost Property, Parker has a good chance of finding anything that might have gone astray; providing it was on a flight to/from Heathrow. The Science Museum (A Tether to Lightning) No one who enters this place will come out thinking that science and invention are 'boring', and for this reason the place is very popular with children, also because it is very hands-on. Amongst the many, and massive, exhibits here are: Focault's Pendulum, which measures the earth's rotation; George Stephenson's famous rocket; the Apollo 10 capsule is here, along with a recreation of a futuristic moonbase. Among its displays of cutting edge technology, the Science museum also has some of the oldest exhibits, including the clock mechanism From Wells Cathedral, which still works 600 years after its construction. Seneschal Savant is the Kyriotate who enjoys entertaining the customers with his tricks. Savant can often be found inside one of the exhibits, making it come to life to the delight of the audience. He is wordbound to the museum itself and prefers possessing devices to living beings. There is more than a little PT Barnum within savant; he came over to England from America where he served at the Epcot centre in Florida. He is more showman than scientist at times, but can be relied upon to serve Lightning when necessary. Savant is very progressively minded and is always looking forward to the future. He's come into conflict with many of the London traditionalists for his views on modernisation, especially those that conflict with servants of Novalis and Jordi. To him it's all innocent, he means no harm, but doesn't really value some of the old ways and things in life. Technology blinds him a little to the value of things. His special rite is: +1 Essence for explaining something technical in a way that definitely entertains; the listener must understand as well as be excited. The Cenotaph (A Tether to War) This is the nation's chief memorial to the dead of both world wars. It is the site of an official ceremony attended by the Queen and senior politicians of all parties. This ceremony, marked by the wearing of poppies, encourages the remembrance of those who gave their lives to serve their countries. Amongst the names listed on that solemn memorial are those celestials that gave their lives in the service of Heaven and hell. This is neutral ground, and as such, isn't really a tether. Servants of Michael and Baal have agreed to keep their word alive by means of a truce so as not to damage such a place. To that end, the local seneschal of Novalis fashioned a special kind of commemorative poppy that will prevent the wearer from committing violence inside the tether. The celestials in charge have decreed that no one may enter the area (this also extends to other war memorials in London, such as the Imperial war Museum, Cabinet war Rooms and HMS Belfast) without wearing one. This rule they enforce very strongly. While they angels and demons of wear may have no real love for each other, they both respect their aspects of the Word and do whatever it takes to ensure that is upheld. Seneschal As the Cenotaph is not really a proper tether (one may not ascend to the celestial plane), it has two beings, one angel and demon, who serve as 'seneschals' for want of a better word. Duffy is the Elohite of War while Morgan is his Impudite counterpart. Both maintain the truce equally while working against each other elsewhere. At least one of the pair will be on hand if anyone attends the site, but sometimes they delegate responsibility to their servants when the situation isn't so needy. Their servants have had problems adjusting to the situation and both have had to deal harshly with a couple on occasion. Their rules extend to their servants equally as to celestials and mortals. Even a cat that 'marks it's territory' here is just as likely to be dealt with. Upon entering any of the sites, a known celestial will be given a poppy; they may not know why, but they better not find out the hard way. Anyone ejected from the site may not return; if they try to do so, they will face the combined wrath of both heaven and hell. They take their job very seriously. Duffy and Morgan are regarded curiously by their respective peers; some like Marianne find it honourable, whilst others like Nergal find it reprehensible, but the situation hasn't caused any damage to the celestial balance so far, so the arrangement is tolerated. Their superiors feel the same way, but wont hesitate in disciplining either servant if they step just a little too far. Dominic has been kept in the dark, but given the peaceful nature of the situation may well allow it to continue so long as it too doesn't risk heavens position (naturally, Asmodeus takes a similar line - both have got bigger fish to fry anyway). Kew Gardens (A Tether to Flowers) The Royal Botanical Gardens are luxuriant to see at any time of year. There are plants here from every corner of the globe, all lovingly tended by the local Seneschal of Peace and Love. Combining two royal estates in 1772 created the gardens; under the patronage of George III they became one of the world's foremost centres for horticultural research. Kew is involved in sending seeds all over the world, and was actively involved in introducing rubber to Southeast Asia. Seneschal Marianne is the Cherub of Flowers in charge of Kew Gardens, but it's a place she finds a little stuffy at times, and is more likely to be found somewhere more fashionable. Her role is that of a sixties veteran, like Twiggy, who has sunk a lot of her corporeal wealth into the Gardens. This gives her an excuse to poke her nose around when necessary; but more often than not she is happy to let the staff get on with things. They do find her knowledge of plants and flowers, though, irritatingly perceptive. Marianne is also the parent of Adam the seneschal of the Ministry of sound (a place that's a little too young for her - she was around to help Jesus in the garden of gethsemane). She is protective of her secret and her child and will do anything to ensure his survival against the likes of Dominic. She has long since given up any hope of Eli ever coming back to meet his child. However, Novalis helps her out, she isn't bitter about it. At times Marianne acts distracted and some believe she has a hidden agenda that only she knows about. This is true Marianne only cares for peace and operates only according to her scruples; she has the full support of her Archangel on this as well, but her demeanour can seem a little off-putting at times to those in need of her help. Marianne is wordbound to Kew and has the following special rite: +1 for helping an endangers species flourish (this also extends to non-plant life; this is art of Novalis' friendship with Jordi and her wish to see the animal kingdom flourish in urban environments here Jordi has no real power; like London). Great Ormond Street Hospital (A Tether to Children) The famous hospital for sick children ahs grown in power ever since it became popular through it's many appearance on TV, not least of all for the sterling work it does in healing the young. The place has a real reputation for truly caring; but one sad part is a plaque commemorating those youngsters who have gone on to play with the Archangel in Heaven, may they rest in peace and play forever. This plaque is found at the back of the Victorian Chapel inside the hospital. It is here that Christopher's cathedral can be reached in the Glades. Seneschal Simply named Angel, this Mercurian is the seneschal of the hospital. She often appears in her role as head nurse and is always, always kind and helpful to children. If she is ever angry, she never shows it in public making her wrath all the more frightening. Angel is the youngest seneschal in London, serving the youngest Archangel to have a tether. With her, children always have priority and she will likely take their side against anyone else's - be they angel or mortal, firmly believing in the innocence and purity of the young. Her special rite is: +1 for making a patient of the hospital genuinely smile or laugh. Lesser Infernal Tethers: The Monument (A Tether to Fire) Located on the embankment, the Monument commemorates the Great fire of 1666; a day when the Calabite of Destruction walked calmly through the burning streets, laughing at the dead and dying as London collapsed around him. The gilded bronze urn at the summit symbolises the flames of the Fire. Below the urn is a viewing platform that is enclosed by an iron cage because of the number of people who killed themselves in the 18th century by jumping from it. Seneschal Ashbel is the rather old, albeit somewhat dissonant, Calabite in charge of looking after the Monument. For him it's a job that's losing its appeal. No one even comes here to commit suicide, now that the fence has been erected. Belial only keeps him here out of fear he'll lose the tether to Gabriel, even though it has little significance in the corporeal world. Ashbel maintains the tether more out of fear of punishment from Belial (and possibly punishment from Gabriel if her angels ever took the site!). The Great Fire (started by Ashbel - this was his reward) ended centuries ago, in fact the blitz was a long time past as well. He's bored and may well be on the verge of turning to the light. Ashbel's special rite is: +1 Essence for committing arson in the City of London. Madame Tussauds (A Tether to Dark Humour) The first and original Madame Tussauds (the company having now opened similar displays in cities all over the world), none is quite as interesting as this one, because of its range of historical exhibits. These include the genuine blade from another famous Madame - the Guillotine! A grisly reminder of how this museum began. Madame Tussaud perfected her craft during the French revolution by taking death masks of guillotine victims. She fled Pairs later and arrived in Britain with her macabre collection, first touring the country, then setting up an exhibit of historical figures. The collection is continually extended to encompass the famous of every age. However the bizarre nature of the place has never failed to nearly amuse the Jaded One in all its history. (Nor fail as a link to the Archive as well!) Seneschal Tussaud, the Habbalite who takes his name from the Madame of the title, is the demon in charge here. He enjoys the way 'his' toys capture the public's imagination. He likes to use his powers to prey on the odd straggler in the crowds (the member of the schooltrip lagging behind the others or the pregnant mother sitting down for a moment to catch her breath for instance) by having the dummies 'some to life' somehow. All in all he just likes to laugh -0 at others misfortunes. The big joke is how ridiculous the whole idea is: strange figures half-resembling real life possibilities; plus the fact that amongst them are relics that do come to life when needed! Tussaud's special rite is: +1 extra Essence for every Kobal band-joke that includes waxworks in it Speakers Corner (A Tether to Factions) Here, on Sundays, soapbox orators can harangue the crowds on any issue thanks to a tradition dating from the mid-19th century. According to law, anyone can speak on any topic so long as they don't blaspheme, swear or incite racial hatred or otherwise breach the peace; but then demons of factions need little recourse to such primitive means. Seneschal There is a Shedite here who has a habit of possessing those who seem intent on causing trouble - or those who might actually have something interesting to say. Either way Rohgah, Shedite of Speakers Corner, subtly twists their efforts. Unfortunately for Rohgah, he is too filled with his own self-importance; he truly believes those he has affected will come away and sow the seeds of dissent in society as a whole. In reality of course, their little tirades are barely heard through the traffic noise, but sometimes there is the odd person who does make the odd listener think, and it's these people that Rohgah preys upon and savours the most. Rohgah has the following special rite: +1 Essence every time a speaker causes dissent amongst a crowd, or gets the squabbling - whilst obeying corporeal law (see above). The Set of the National Lottery (A Tether to the Media) With an audience of desperate, ticket waving hopefuls, this television spectacle (featuring guest stars form all round the world) is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. The set itself, graced by the inane presenters - - slave to Nybbas' bidding, is capable of transporting anyone straight to Perdition. The Balls used in the draw, along with the three, randomly selected, lottery machines (curiously named after King Arthur, Lancelot and Guineverre) are tools of the infernal. Seneschal What a happy day it was for the Balseraph of Media when 'his' idea to host a live lottery draw on TV netted him the job of seneschal for the burgeoning tether. With the popularity of the draw (And the live show around it), the set became a tether to Perdition - at least for now. Jaak, the seneschal, though, fears for how long the idea will last and in the small hours of the night plans vigorously and anxiously for his uncertain future. Jaak's special rite is: +1 Essence for every rollover week on the lotttery. Sotheby's (A Tether to Theft) The world's largest auctioneer, the place is a haven for stolen goods and high-priced deals (I didn't say that!). Recently, one of Mammon's most powerful servants has penetrated the ranks of London's infernal elite. He has ingratiated himself to the seneschal here and gained a position of trust by helping out whenever the seneschal has to leave. Unfortunately for Valefor, the demon of greed plans to take the place for himself; this hungry creature has his sights set on other targets as well, both divine and diabolical. Seneschal(s) Valefor's main man is Fagan, Djinn of theft. He has an attunement to the place that was foisted on him by Valefor. Despite his apparent ambivalence, Fagan does enjoy his job and certainly relishes the ridiculous prices that some of the artefacts that pass through the doors can fetch. He hasn't dome himself any favours with Pyotr however, as he ha made a name in the relic game for himself as well. This is bad for Pyotr's business and something he wants stamped on very quickly. Fortunately, Fagan has some help in the form of a Lilim of Greed named Hadadezer. She has persuaded Fagan that she can be trusted when in fact she has grand designs of her own - starting with the tether itself. Only her and Mammon know this, Mammon himself is taking a big risk with her plans; if confronted he doesn't have the power to faced down all the enemies Hadadezer will have made. Currently Fagan has delegated responsibility to Hadadezer whenever he has to leave town; his servants and fellow Theftites have started to question his policy and wonder whether or not he has been bewitched by another of Lilith's children. Fagan has the following special rite: +1 essence every time Hell acquires something nice (ask Valefor for his definition of nice, or the GM, if he's otherwise tied up!) James wrote, he did: >Nice write-up, but shouldn't there be a tether to Valefor somewhere in the >Museum? After all, an awful lot of the stuff we did basically pinch. May >have been for the better, but still ... I am not sure about that, the 'pinch' bit, it's probably true, but until i find some interesting stuff on this io have a different take (some of which i mentioned previously): The place is too 'clean' to be 'Hellish' in my opinion; in my game (dunno about real life though) the place has not enough incidents of Theft to warrarnt it being a tether - despite what it says in H&H. if you take that line, then every street on earth, and probably every public place is a Tether to Stygia (am i being ridiculous?). I made it that from day one, newbie Theftites have set their sites on the Musuem (amongst other places) with designs on making it a tether to Valefor (and geting handsomely rewarded for their hard work). nobody'd been able to pull this off so far (Sneshcals are too powerful to let this sort of thing happen, which is another reason why i didn't make it a tether to Theft) adn its a bit of a sore point for Valefor's servants assigned to London who would rather see these 'kids' doing a proper job and not mucking around wasting everybody's time. That's not to say that the occasional item doesn't go missing, or that the odd exhibit is somehow dubious in origin! Just don't tell Belshazzar or Randolph! Jo writes: "The british library is actually split between several sites. I'm also told that they lose about 30% of the collection every time they move (or at least they realise that 30% got lost since the last time anyone did a full catalogue), but that might just be a librarian urban myth :)" Thanks, that's a good point! On the subject of : "What books and movies, not obviously connected to Canon, nevertheless make an interesting sort of sense when you look at them in the light of the IN world and system?" Have you seen Dark City? Baraka, also, could be (it'll get you in the IN mood anyway! Music by Dead Can Dance). I wonder if anyone has put together some kind of list with fictional characters and their IN equivalents. this would be a helpful resource to newcomers and people likewise trying to get a handle on the many characters in the IN universe. E. KUmar writes: "Lucifer is a Balseraph with immense power. Before the fall he managed to convince many Angels and Archangels of his plot to overthrow god and they believed him( because as far as the Liars resonance goes it doesn't get any more powerful than his.)!" This implies one of several possibilites: A)Demons already existed independetnly of fallen angels. B)Balseraph's are not demons or at least werent (thus Lucifer was a Balseraph, not a Seraph) "He than managed to use his immense power and even got God to believe that his spin on the Symphony was a viable one. God, being the Symphony, became tainted with Lucifers personal symphony" Don't forget, Lucifer is as much a part of the symphony as God; it flows in all things, etc. This theory of course supports the whole ineffability track as well. therefore God wasn't tainted. It's all natural; a bit like arguing that there is n such thing as something being 'artificial' because it all comes from natural sources in the beginning. I persoanlly favour the idea that God colluded (and perhaps still does) with Lucifer. "God is a circle in which the diameter is nowhere and the center is everywhere." Therefore there can be no duality of good and evil. it is all an illusion. have a cup of tea :) (you are dangerously close to sartori!) "Ignorant questions: Why wasn't Big Ben tolled for Victoria's funeral. Or is it usually not tolled for royal funerals? How many Anglican archbishops are there? I know of Canterbury and York. Have you done a write-up of Westminster Abbey? If not, will you? With all these saints represented -- George, Andrew, David, Patrick, Stephen -- are any of them actually hanging about, looking after the doings of their one-time flocks? Earl" Ignorant answers ;) Big Ben was tolled for other important funerals, according to my sources, but I don't know why Victoria got left out. I have no ideas on Anglican Archbishops (this is something i didn't concern myself with, so forgive me) Westminster is forthcoming, you lucky people! I fully intend to use the saints - Paul included (I think there may be a couple of others as well) in my campaign; as soon as i come up with stuff i'll post it. Anyone else got any better answers? I recently leafed through the new Trek RPG, the one with the Paramount label written by Last Unicorn Games. Curious to find out, I turned to the Alien races section to see what they'd write up on Q. What they did was create a subclassification on Omnipotent Beings and I'll paraphrase it here. Omnipotent beings are those powerful enough that game rules simply do not apply. Superiors (and I mean the ones with the major capital S) occupy the same positon in the game that Gods do in AD+D and Elder Amberites in Amber Diceless Roleplaying. If they're in a scenario, they're there to play a role you've assigned to them. If you have conflicting Omnipotent beings, you'll decide their outcome probably based on something the player characters will have done or failed to do indirectly. If you want to PLAY Superiors, junk the InNominee rules completely and read up the following for inspiring research. Primal Order... late of Wizards of the Coast, you might still find a copy lurking in stores like the Compleat Strategist (I think the NYC stores still have a couple) Amber Diceless RolePlaying... Technically still in print but nothings come out of Phage Press in a long while. Should be easier to get awhold of than Primal Order though. The World of Synnibar... The game of Power Gamers, has a good section on Immortals and Gods which might prove helpful. Be warned though, it's a rarefied level of play which will fail utterly without players who are willing to really work at putting real meat into their characterisations and willing to do the research to pull it off. - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | _ | | We are dreamers, shapers, singers and makers. /_\ | | We study the mysteries of laser and circuit, // \\ | | Crystal and scanner, holographic demons, \\ //___\\ | | And invocations of equations. \\ // \\ | | \\__// \\ | | These are the tools we employ. (no spoilers here!) I finally was able to get my greedy little paws on FotM. I should have waited. No, it's not that it was *bad*, it's just that I have to wait for the Final Trumpet! Still, I'm glad I got it, so here's the unofficial review: The vignette was wonderful, simply wonderful! The Superior write-up of David was excellent. Elizabeth did a good job on Lilith, but did a *fantastic* job on the Bright Lilim! The use of symbols to represent the various Choirs, Bands, and Tethers was a good idea. Kudos to whoever thought of it! :) Speaking of which, these are some of the best character write-ups that I have read since Night Music! Congrats to all those responsible! As for the layout of Los Angeles? I read it, and liked it. The adventures were good, especially Fall of the Malakim! The only gripe I have may not be a gripe, depending on how fast The Final Trumpet ships... So, do Malakim fall? I AIN'T TELLIN'! My rationale operates thusly: Habbalah are 'angels with tattoos.' Thus, tattoo an Elohite celestially, and it looks like a Habbalite (sorta kinda). This is how I thought of the effect. However, the Malakim have no infernal analog. There is no inverse of their celestial form, so inverting the perception of their form would do squat. Likewise for the Lilim, though there is at least precedent for those going Bright. Now that I think about it, a Seraph who uses the Celestial version of this Song could gain Dissonance under a strict interpretation. After all, it is lying about what its true form is.... - -- Casca, Seraph of Archives (bertishg@db.erau.edu) "...I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of His robe filled the temple. HAH! Heh. Heh, heh, heh. I believe I can account for at least half that amount, all courtesy of my trusty "F" key. There's also a small section for 'errata', where I revised a few band attunements that I felt needed revising. Today, I just feel like sharing. Maybe someone will like one of these better than the canon ones, and I'll have made their day just that much brighter... ] ANDREALPHUS' LILIM ] ] Andrealphus' Lilim are his favorite Servitors. He asked for a full page ] to extole their virtues (it boils down to, "If you EVER get a chance ] with one, TAKE IT!") They add their Celestial Forces to any Seduction ] attempt, and anyone who has consensual sex with one automatically owes ] her a Geas/2. I already posted this one once, but I like it so much more than the boring (useful, yes, but boring) one Andre gives in canon. It seems to suit them better, making them into true seductresses, not just powered-up vanilla Lilim. ] SAMINGA'S HABBALAH ] ] Saminga's Habbalah all know the Song of Possession, and always succeed ] in its use with a check digit equal to their Ethereal Forces! The target ] of their possession may resist normally, and the Essence cost is ] unchanged. With one simple change, brazenly stolen from Jean's Mercurians, Saminga's Habbalah are now quite useful. The resistance roll doesn't change, so I don't see this as being at all unbalancing...it just makes them natural possessors, for a fair price. ] VAPULA'S IMPUDITES ] ] Vapula's Impudites all get glasses that can detect how much Essence is ] stored in any being. In addition, they are walking Essence batteries, ] able to store additional points of Essence equal to their Celestial ] Forces! I just toned it down a bit. Sorry, but EIGHTEEN points of Essence? I mean, a reliquary/9 with a +3 convenience feature would cost 30 points, and this is handed out as a band attunement? Too much. I think this is still *very* fair. Any comments? - -- Rev.
