I think maybe the more powerful celestials are able to appear more human, Yves and Kronos are perhaps the two most powerful celestials (or at least closest ones to God) and they have human celestial forms. It may have something to do with that, as that entire in God's image thing has been mentioned before with regards to Yves/Kronos's celestial form. So for example, Gabriel can appear as either her variations of the flaming lady or as an exceptionally powerful Ofanim. The signature forms don't grant any quantifiable benefits or debits, they merely mark the closer attunement to an aspect of the Symphony itself. But I've always been under the impression that celestial appearances were very subjective in nature. The book Heaven and Hell points out that different people see the places in heaven differently. A Seraph would see the Eternal City much differently than a human soul. So I suppose that celestials appearance might vary according to the individual viewing him. However-Comma! Even if a starting celestial could alter his appearance, (which I wouldn't allow) he would not be able to disguise himself. If you went to Heaven and Michael walked up and said Hi, you'd still be able to tell instantly that he was a Seraph and an Archangel, even if he'd made himself look like Jennifer Love Hewitt. It's one of those weird little aspects of the Celestial plane. I've always pictured it thusly: You see Forces and Celestial objects. The shapes that you see them in are simply constructs of your mind that allow you to come to terms with them more easily. So no matter what shape you see the guy your talking to has in your perceptions, you still see him for what he is. An angel, a demon, discordant, etc. But since this is mostly based on the perception of the viewer, not the wishes of the person being viewed, you really don't have much control over what they see. Some basics will always remain constant. Seraphim: winged serpents Ofanim: fiery wheels. This answers another question I've been asked regarding Celestial forms. How do Cherubim or Seraphim or especially Ofanim manipulate objects in Heaven? Simple! Through Will! Ther is no canonical way for a celestial to change the appearance of their celestial form.
