Asmodeus is a Latin-ization of the Hebrew name Ashmedai, which is how the Hebrews rendered the Persian Aeshma Daeva. In Zoroastrian myth, the evil principle Angra Mainyu has as his lieutenants seven archdemons -- the daevas. Aeshma Daeva was the "fiend of the wounding spear", representing the principle of fury. He was also a spy, travelling daily to heaven to eavesdrop on the councils of the angels. The Jews picked him up and morphed his name a bit, but kept him as one of the most powerful demons. In that mythology he became a demon of wisdom and lust, is perhaps most famous for building the First Temple in Jerusalem and corrupting Solomon the Wise. The story goes that when building the Temple, Solomon realized that no human could build a structure worthy of God, and so he prayed to God for help. The archangel Michael went to visit Solomon, and gave him a magic ring inscribed with the name of God. Solomon used this ring to conjure up Asmodeus and forced him to use his magic powers to help construct the Temple. Unfortunately, Solomon continued to use the ring and surrounded himself with demons, and eventually fell prey to their bad influence. The Christians took Ashmedai and Latin-ized it into Asmodeus. He was still a major demon, and was widely held to make men unfaithful. Medieval demonologists claimed that he could teach people to turn themselves invisible, as well as teach them geometry and all the sciences. (Sorry for the rant; Asmodeus is the IN demon prince I find most interesting.) Some Christians claim that Jesus clearly wanted to start a new religion representing himself as the Son of God, and the only way to salvation, but there's no proof of this. Muslims accept Jesus as a divine prophet, equal in stature to Muhammad (theoretically -- in practice, most Muslims treat Muhammad as nearly divine himself). In Nomine is already pretty "heretical," so there's no reason why Jesus couldn't have sponsored a new faith for the Arabs. I doubt the real, historical Jesus (if he existed) would have found anything to fault in Islam. - -David ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Sep 1999 14:13:45 -0500 From: Shadowstar Subject: IN> [Semi-Fluff??] Next Week's Xena. . . Diana: Archangel of Beauty "The World is Beautiful. Only the Infernal is Truely Ugly" When one first hears of the Archangel of Beauty. One thinks of a rather Superfical being who is concerened olny with aesthetics. One meeting with Diana or her Servitors quickly changes on mind. Beauty can be found thoughout creation. From the elegant looks of starlet to the kind heart of an old man looking after the neighbourhood cats. From the Sistene Chapel, to the Grand Canyon. Anywhere in the Symphony where Hell has not twisted to it's own ends, Diana's word is there. A Mercurian, Diana was one of the First Archangels. She helped Uriel, Archangel of Purity moniter the Symphony as it was bieng first formed. She was also the lover of Andreaphalus Archangel of Love. When the Fall came she could only watch frozen as the events unfoled. The beauty of the Symphony being wraped into a terriable cacophony, to describe it she uttered a word never before uttered in Heaven "Ugly". The her love Andre sided with Lucifer only added to her greif. After Lucifer Andre and the rest of the Fallen were cast out of Heaven. She was overcome with sorrow. Only Uriel, no longer Seraph now first of the Malakim could console her. She now Hates Andre for what he has become and Lucifer for making him that way. As time progressed, Diana, with the help and encouargment of Uriel, devoted herself to the War against Hell to protect the Beauty of the world from being devoured by the infernal. In time their freindship became more. For centuries, nay milleniea nothing could break the love between them. Until the Purification Cursade. At first when only the Etheral "gods" and Malevolent Etherels where targetted, she supported it and encouraged her servitors to join the crusade. When Uriel expanded the campaign to include *all* Etherels. She withdrew her support and became one of the Crusades greatest oppents. Both tried to change the others mind, but in porved futile and led to terriable arguments between them. It all came to head during a meeting of the Seraphim Council, when Diana gave a heated, vicious, speach denoucing Uriel for his actions. All were stunned when she spoke of someone she once loved more than her own Word in such a way, espcieally Uriel. As everyone else breathed a sigh of relif as God called Uriel to the Uppper Heavens. Diana was said to have told one of her servitors "I still love him, but I can never forgive him." Her servitors are charged with the portection of beauty in all it's forms, a park ranger is just as plausable as the owner of an art gallery. A warm kind hearted grandmother may be more likely to attract their attention than a supermodel. Artist are common, but so are scientist, engineers and architects. One thing they have in common is that they see their Supirors word throughout the Symphony. Only Hell and those who serve directly or inderectly are hideous and must be snuffed out to restore the world to it's former beauty. This is a major sticking point between her and Novalis. Her Servitors can be as militant as Micheal or Laurence, though with a strong prefrence for rapiers, katanas, engraved handguns and the "softer" forms to the Martial Arts. As one would exepct she is strong supporter of Eli, and has defened him against Domonic's persecutions. Obiviously they do not get along well. Diana also sevral of Creation's angles in her service. As stated she works with Novalis, and Jordi and Blandine as well. Her relationship with Laurence is best describe as "complex". Dissonance: It is Dissonant for any of Diana's Servitors to destroy any work of beauty (Works of art are the most common defention but not the only one) or allow a work of beauty to be destroyed through inaction. It is also dissonant to fail to take action against a known infrenal threat (calling in a legion of Malakim will suffice) Chior Attunements: Seraphim: A lie is a hideous thing, any Seraph will tell you that. To one of Diana's Seraphim such hideuosness cannot be allowed to go unnoticed. If a Seraph spends one essence before useing his ressonance, and the target is lying, anyone who can hear will know along with the Seraph. Cherubim: If an object of the attunement of one of Diana's Cherubim is not touched by Hell (ie, not a demon, Soldier of Hell, sorcerer, undead, or simple mundane bastard), the divine beauty within him will shine though and it will become difficult for pepole to act against him, in fact it will become hard not to come to his aid should anyone try anything (will roll to resit in both cases). If the guy *is* touched by hell however, he gets no dissonance if he gets hurt. Ofanim: Diana's Ofanim move with unatural grace. They add their Corpreal forces to both the Target Number of all Agility rolls. Elohim: There is beauty in everything. None know this better than Diana's Elohim. By speneding 1 Essecnce and making a Preception roll. The Elohite can determen the Most beautiful aspect about a person (honesty, good parent, etc.) Malakim: The Servants of Hell Embody all that is hideous. Diana's Malakim know this. They can detect *any* servant of hell, not just Balserphs on a CD 6 of a resonance roll. Kyriotates: Even the odd Celestial Form of the Kyriotate is beautiful in it's own way. Mortals suffer no ill effects when looking at the celestial form of a Kyrio of Beauty. Mercurians: Mercurians Start off with +1 Charisma free, they can have negetive Charisma and it may exceede +3. Servitor Attunemt: Divine Awe: By spending 2 essence a servitor of Diana may bring forth the Divine Beauty within himself. All eyes will transfixed on him and those attracted to his vessel's gender may start thinking of him...in a cretain way, his effective Charisma is increased by 2. Distinctions: Vassal of Beauty: By spending two essence and succeding on an artistry roll. The angel may describe a person, place or things beauty in such a way that the audience will find the thought of harming it abhorrent. They may roll Will to resist. Freind of Spelndor: The angel me now walk the earth in his true beauty without disrupting it. That is can go Celestial with disrupting the Symphony. Master of The Wonder of Creation: By touching a person spending 5 essence and succeding on a Will Roll at -3 difficulty. The angel may elighten him about the true beauty of creation. The effects depend on the individual but more or less the effect person will have a increased respect who the world and those who dewll within it. They are less inclined to..I don't know serve Hell. This mabye used to recruit Soldeirs of God or Redeem Soliders of Hell, or sorcerers that might be wroth saving. It can also affect Demons but it is only temporary (10-Celestial Forces Days). Demons and reluctant mortals may Roll Will to resist (Demons at +3 diificulty). Relations: Allied: Eli, Blandine, Jordi, Novalis Associtated: Michael, Laurence, David, Jean, Gaberiel Hostile: Domonic Rites: Spend one hour admireing the beauty of the world. Create a work of art. Kill a Servant of Hell to rid the world of his hideuosness (+2 Essence) Spend the Day with someone you love (+3 essence) Chance of Invoction-5 Modifiers: +1 a bouqet of Roses +2 a beautiful sunrise/sunset +3 a concert/art show +4 a ploace of great natrual beauty +5 No demons in 100 miles +6 inside the Sistine Chapel Comments, Questions, Ridicule Bradley Paranial Mercurian Vassal of War, Temporaliy in the Service of Diana. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Sep 1999 01:15:41 -0600 From: Tim Groth Subject: Re: IN> New Superior Just for you Hmmmm, an Archangel of Beauty may well exist, but one of the first? I like the write up though, though sorcerors are getting a bum rap again (not all sorcerors are bound for hell, the Word of sorcery for hell is interpretted very narrowly like most demonic Words, but I'm not going to rant). Being bored, I decided to see if I could come up with anything interesting vesselwise for each of the superiors. I decided to work along a combat orientated line, because I can, and so I can have something unusual to throw at pesky powergamers, so most of these are appropriate for Malakim and Calabim. Note: these can be quite unbalancing, so don't consider using them. Archangels Bladine: Creatures of myth and legend e.g. dragons, unicorns, fairies, etc. Rumors that Bladine is, in fact, involved with ethereals are denied strongly. At least when there are no Seraphs around. David: Turn to gargoyles, bronze giants, men of stone, etc. For an example, see his Kyrioate choir attunements. Domonic: Very few of Domonic's servitors ask to be given alternate vessels as it's usually considered a sign of deviancy. Eli: Eli usually likes giving out vessels, but doesn't have any favourite set vessel, preferring to give them out on an individual basis. One of his servitors spent 300 years as a vase in Ancient Greece for example, where he was owned by a series of brilliant artists, mathematicians, and philosophers. Gabriel: Gives out vessels of living flame to her trusted warriors. This gives them permenant, essence free NC wings, halves all damage except for water, cold, foam etc. which do damage equal to vessel level as song level, and causes vessel level times celestial forces damage each round as per an explosion. Janus: Gives out vessels of wind or gas, incapeable of taking harm, but unable to do any more damage than a gust of wind. Rumors that El Nino is caused by one of his servitors are deinied as are teh rumors that he's given out tornado vessels. Jean: Considers alternate vessels illogical, but may give them out in special cases as cars, computers, or other such objects. More likely to give a relic though. Jordi: Many people forget that dinosaurs are once under Jordi's domain, as are ethereal beasts, which does include dragons, unicorns, and Godzilla. Many of Jordi's Malakim long for a werewolf vessel. Laurence: Usually gives out archtypal Christian Avenging Angel Vessels, with wings and Bright Shiny Armour (tm) and Bright Shiny Swords (tm). Many Lillim are fascinated by these vessels, as they all ususally have Charisma 3 (commanding). Lusties especially. Marc: Has no fixed archetype, as it's so much easier to hire one of Laurence's boys to stand in a corner and loom (and distract the Lillim) Gives out vessels on a case by case basis, but expects a good return on his investment. Michael: Realises that these, like anything else, are weapons to be used in the war, and usually gives his servitors who have proved themselves vessels with a permanent song. Retractable claws are very popular, as is wings. His Elite Malakim are given multi-armed creatures from a surrealists nightmares. Jordi helped him design them. Novalis: Novalis' Malakim prefer Triffids. Yves: Anything he damn well likes, the ineffable bastard. Princes Andrealphus: likes to give his favoured servitors vessels which can't really be discussed out side of an X rating, and even that's pushing it. Permanent versions of his unique Numinus Corpus figures prominantly, as does NC tongue. Asmodeus: Gives his proven agents shapeshifting vessels ala Celestial song of form that can, after viewing any demon (or angel) for 6 - celestial forces hours reliably impersonate them. It does, however, take an enourmous amount of effort to prove yourself to Asmodeus Baal: vessels to make the most hardened Malakim blanch, enourmous alien forms are given to Baal's elite soldiers. Some servitors, however, prefer to attack from ambush, as cute animals, children, and defenceless looking women. Get's the swordies every time - have a hideous "monster" menace an innocent looking woman, and 9 out of 10 of Laurence's Malakim will leap straight in. Beleth: Think of teh single most terrifying image you can imagine. Then multiply that several thousand times. Belial: Copies Gabriel's living flame warriors, except without the wings. Haagenti: Usually gives either enourmously tempting vessels, or vessels that are really, really, really, good at eating things. Kobal: Nothing is too sick, too perverted, or too off for Kobal's servitors. Common vessels include rubber chickens, mickey mouse, revered icons (jesus in a bikini, etc.) and aliens. For the abduction, don't you know. Kronos: Nobody wants to know, Nobody really asks. It's enough that they have to put up with him as a Prince, without having to look at what he can think up. Usually thouogh, it's just teh exact person/thing that someone would trust, that could be used to move them towards their fate, e.g. uncle sam convinces Billy Bob that all tehse foriegners are ruining the country. Billy Bob goes out to buy a high powered rifle. Malphas: Usually gives his servitors celestial form which he has them use to do outragous things which divide communities. Nybbas: Gives cultural icons, and famous media personalities. And copies of Malakim, which are used in the various entertainment regions of his empire - porn, bloodsports, and horror (Attack of the Malakim!) Saminga: What else? Dead bodies, or the forms of famous (and not so famous) serial killers. Valefor: Nobody knows for certain, but it's thought that he has servitors who can assume gaseous or wind forms, go into vaults, pick stuff up on their usual vessels then go out leaving none the wiser. Vapula: Has a different alternate vessel every week, if not day, minute, or second. Past successes include transformer like beings, borg like beings, and giant robots. Nybbas has a deal where he can use them in his programs. Anyway, this is just a basic set of ideas, if you think of any better ones, or are willling to work out any of the mechanics for any of them, or just wish to tell me how stupid my ideas are, please reply. Danger to themselves, they hear on a scale of minutes; they greater the circle of people that they know that will be affected by a coming danger, the greater the time they can hear it coming. Danger to a warhost they are bonded to may well be heard hours ahead of time; a Malak of Michael working in Hiroshima would have been bothered for several months or years before 6 August 1945, when a loan B-52, called the Enola Gay, dropped a single bomb.... Of course, knowing that *something* is going to happen, and knowing exactly what is going to go wrong are two very different creatures. Still, they do provide a valuable service. Wisdom and discernment is required to recognize what scale they are hearing a warning on; intelligence, foresight, and many contacts are needed to figure out what is about to happen, when it is going to happen, and figure out what to do about it. [hint: "plays well with others" is a good subject to get good grades in -- this is where the others in the Malak's warhost/circle of friends can get into the act, once the Malak sounds the initial warning. This Choir Attunement is a good plot-hook to use to start an adventure: a Malak the others know contacts them with the message "By the prickling of my thumbs... grab your gear, something is getting ready to pop" followed by a time and a place to meet. It is signed with a mark that is half flowing pseudo-Arabic, half musical notation that is my mental image of the Earthly transcription of the Malak's True Celestial Name]. later, Tom Timberlake, Cadre Cherub of Heaven - -- "Strange blood, howl again, for now we know to well Better a friend on paths unknown, than to be alone in Hell!" --"Strange Blood" "A Wolfrider's Reflection", various artist ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #1340 ******************************** The material here is (C) 1999 Steve Jackson Games, Incorporated.
