"Lord," prayed Dominic, before settling into the confessional. Oh, Dominic prayed. Not often, but sometimes. It might seem odd that an Archangel wouldn't often pray, but the Archangel of Judgement should never petition. His is the place of decision, not invocation. Yet only in God's true Justice could Dominic find solace of his own, even as he offered it to others, where he possibly could. "Lord," he prayed again. "Please. In Your Name, let me have a penitent who truly seeks to confess, in good faith and with good heart. Please, Lord. Let me reach and help a man today." God, they say, does not play dice with the universe. But Einstein may have been wrong, and sometimes the three dice all come up with the same number on the top. Even Dominic would do well to remember this. There was a shuffle in the confessional, then, as someone settled within carefully. "Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. It has been eight point six seconds since my last confession." "Well then," Dominic said smoothly. "Come, and let us... um... did you say eight point six seconds?" "Yes, Most Just." Dominic paused for a long, long moment. "Litheroy?" "Why, yes, Most Just." "You... have Sins to Confess?" "But of course, Most Just." "That have gone unconfessed?" Dominic's disbelief echoed in the small confessional. "Oh -- oh no, Most Just. That would be the height of sin itself. But there is a difference between confessing and confessing to the Archangel of Judgement himself. And as I have always said to my Servitors and to those who would listen, in the confession and revelation of our souls might we find solace within ourselves." "Well... yes, Litheroy. But still, I--" "May I begin, Most Just?" "Um... certainly, old friend. What have you to confess." Litheroy took a deep breath. "Three days after receiving my Ethereal Force, my Corporeal Force and my Celestial Force, making me a Reliever, I had thoughts of envy as I watched the Archangel David stride purposely through Heaven. Envy for both David's clear strength and his beauty. I coveted his Black Wings and firm, strong presence. Then later that same day, I saw my future Superior, Raphael, being attended by a Mercurian, and I felt envy towards the Mercurian for serving such a glorious lady and a certain degree of pride that I had not stammered when she asked my name. Not long after that, I took the drinking cup she had been drinking from. Oh, it was not truly a theft, as she was Knowledge and I did not hide, but still one should be thorough, and strictly speaking I never asked for it and dare not deceive myself of the implications. Now, on the fourth day of my life, I was walking through the glade when I tripped over the soul of a newborn kitten, and I cursed at it, taking the name of you, Most Just in vain and frightening what should have been a protected and blessed soul...." Dominic was an Archangel. His strength was legendary. And as he realized the totality of the confession that was to be laid before him -- thousands upon thousands of years of the Seraph's existence, from creation to fledging to service to Word to prestige to Archangel... he felt something inside him almost shiver, but he never complained. He simply listened, to Litheroy's complete, total, utterly unforced, completely honest, one hundred percent complete confession. We said the numbers on the dice were all the same. We never said what those numbers were. - -- I have a broken hand, so spelling errors, capitalization errors, and extremely slow response times should be treated as precious things, not errors, because I'm not about to correct them. Probalby a Balseraph -- she told so many different lies in such short order that she herself forgot which fork of the strategy tree she was on that particular minute. And it tripped her up in the end. I see Miles as a Servitor of Destiny, myself. Ever notice how everybody Miles has taken into his personal service has achieved a hell of a lot more of their potential then they would have otherwise? Read the last chapter of _Komarr_, where Miles is detailing his love life to Ekaterin... and then add in all the male members of the list, and see that the pattern isn't just among his old girlfriends. Elli Quinn -- goes from a common merc trooper to Fleet Admiral. Taura -- went from a mutant slave on Jackson's Whole to a free and happy woman, and made Master Sergeant in the Dendarii Free Mercenaries. Baz Jesek -- started out as an impoverished deserter stuck on a planet not his own, ended up a happily married man and co-owner of his own starship, after a long and honorable career as chief engineer of the Dendarii, as well as an Armsman (*major* step up for a Barrayaran soldier, especially among a service where deserters are considered to be lower scum than mutants and the penalty for such is being quartered alive.). Elena Bothari-Jesek -- an NCO's daughter on a planet where her only acceptable social role (in that decade) would be 'married off', ended up a starship captain. Rowan Durona (and all her clone-sisters) -- starts out as a technical serf/slave of House Fell, ends up a free woman and a co-owner of one of Escobar's thriving medical R&D businesses. (OK, Mark deserves shared credit for that one.) Arde Mayhew -- a busted-out tramp freighter pilot who starts out as only one step ahead of arrest and Betan psychotherapy, ends up as an Armsman, and a pilot officer among the Dendarii with an honorable career and distinguished record. Except for those near him who have already done it by their own efforts, Miles does this to *everybody*. People drawn into his orbit get pushed to their limits, and beyond their limits, as they discover that they can do things that on their own they would never have dreamed of trying. And they *thrive*. And then there's what Miles does to *events*, as well as people... I'm calling Ofanite of Destiny on Miles, meself. (Incidentally, while Barrayar is an 'authoritarian dictatorship', it is not a nasty one. Barrayar in Ezar's day, now *that's* a nasty place. However, Miles' parents, and then Gregor, made sure that that *changed*.) >Aral Vorkosigan >Let's see, first he was the Butcher of Komarr -- the man in charge >when dozens of civilians were murdered. I begin to see a pattern here... to wit, blaming Aral for events caused by other people. First off, while he was in command, he was not in control. The Political Officer ordered the Solstice Massacre without Aral's knowledge and against Aral's express orders. And paid for it with his life. >He started an interstellar war that left tens of thousands dead for the >express purpose of assassinating the legitimate heir to the throne of >Barrayar. Several facts that those who have not read the books may not know, and that were left out: a) Emperor Ezar Vorbarra is the man who started that war for the purpose of killing his son, Crown Prince Serg. Aral didn't start anything, and at no time before the death of Prince Serg and Admiral Vorrutyer was he in command of the Barrayaran forces. Neither was he in charge of drawing up the attack plans. (He was, however, in charge of drawing up the *retreat* plans...) b) Prince Serg was a homicidal psychotic -- and what's worse, an easily deluded homicidal psychotic who had somewhat saner but even more corrupt advisors and sycophants running him like a hand puppet, such as Admiral Vorrutyer and Minister Grishnov -- who, had he lived to take the throne of Barrayar, would have made the reign of Mad Emperor Yuri look like Utopia. And given that Mad Emperor Yuri made Caligula look like Marcus Aurelius... c) Aral Vorkosigan had volunteered to do anything -- up to and including the suicidal act of openly assassinating Serg with his own hands -- rather than have the Escobaran War happen. Emperor Ezar overruled that, and made it adamantly plain that with Aral's help or without it, the Escobaran War *would* go forward on schedule. (And given that Ezar was at that moment in a position to send Aral to the executioner's block with a word, it's not like the man was in any great bargaining position.) And in the end, the only thing that bought Aral's participation in the end was the knowledge that his being the man on the spot was what would make the war as short as possible and minimize the destruction to the greatest extent possible. Incidentally, you might remember what Aral's original plan was for what-will-I-do-with-my-life-after-Escobar, before Cordelia showed up and convinced Aral to change them. Suicide, out of guilt. Since when do Balseraphs feel guilt? >He murdered the son of an old and honorable man over a technical >violation of the law against dueling (a law that he himself had >broken much more comprehensively in his youth). Well, you finally hit something that he was guilty of. Admittedly, he thought he was doing the right thing -- by stamping out the custom of dueling. Incidentally, Fate (or Destiny) made Aral pay, and pay in blood, for having made that decision. Had he not sentenced Carl Vorhalas to die (or more accurately, failed to issue a pardon after the court convicted him), Carl's brother Evon would never have fired that nerve gas grenade through his bedroom window, and Aral's older son Miles would not have been born without those catastrophic birth defects. >All the while he paraded his own honor around in an arrogant and obnoxious >fashion. Actually, Aral's friends were always willing to parade his honor for him. Aral himself was rather humble about it, unless his honor was being directly challenged in a hostile manner at that moment. >Balseraph of the War. Besides, Cordelia *can't* be a Habbalite. Habbalites have no temper or impulse control, that's what defines them... and I think Cordelia's been seen even momentarily losing her temper only five times in thirty years, and all of those incidents before she was thirty-five. I don't think they'd ever find the body. At least, not all intact and in the same place. *eg* >Ivan Vorpatril >He spends most of his time running for cover from the other >characters, and occasionally saves Miles' butt, only to receive >cruelty and abuse from him. Ivan and Miles are like brothers. That is to say, they love each other dearly but they spend most of their time imposing on each other's generosity (and time, and effort) without thanks, insulting each other, saving each other's butts whenever the other one is in trouble, wrestling with each other (either physically or mentally), and in general doing all that 'male bonding' stuff that would make any observing stranger think that these two guys are massively indifferent to each other, if not mortal enemies. OTOH, we've seen Miles' response to Ivan being in mortal danger, and we've seen Ivan's response to Miles' (believed-to-be-at-the-time) death. At least as much as Mark is, Cousin Ivan is effectively Miles' brother. (Ivan definitely isn't *Mark's* brother, though...) >Human soldier, charmed by Miles. It sucks to be him. You're kidding me, right? 98% of the time, being Ivan Vorpatril is the cushiest job on Barrayar. *eg* - -- Chuckg _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. This strikes me as something of a problem. Correct me if I'm wrong on any of these details, but: 1) Angels can Fall by gaining Dissonance, while demons have to choose to seek Redemption. 2) For angels, gaining Dissonance is meant to be based on a moral decision--an angel who gains Dissonance has chosen to act either unlike an angel of that Choir, or unlike a Servitor of his/her Superior. Accordingly, the fact that Dissonance carries the risk of falling does not mean the angel can Fall due to just bad dice rolls. 3) For demons, gaining Dissonance is meant to be the result of failing to impose his/her selfish will on the Symphony, but does not carry the risk of anything as severe as Falling. The situation we have, though, is one where: 4) For a Bright Lilim, gaining Dissonance, which carries the risk of falling, is the result of failing to impose her will on the Symphony. Accordingly, a Bright is at risk of Falling due to bad dice rolls. I have noticed the same problem with Brights' dissonance, though. Perhaps they cannot Geas a person to do something that is harmful or dangerous to themselves. They can still be made to do inconvenient or unpleasant things. Or maybe they don't get that kind of dissonance at all, but simply get superior dissonance, and self-geasing dissonance. The self-geas dissonance can be a decent restriction. And maybe the abilty to avoid resonance-backlash dissonance is another benefit of redemtion. Reverend Brian A. Rebecca also can tell, with a Perception Roll, whether a particular group is being affected by Diabolical influences. Special Rites: Participate in a benevolent, non-mainstream event (may be done twice per day). Laurence insisted. After all, as he told the Seraphim Council when the subject came up, it was his Servitors who found Negabekki (the Renegade Demon of the Counterculture), hiding out at a Renaissance Faire. It was his Servitors who discovered that the Djinn had run away because she was tired of cheapening non-mainstream beliefs for the Media. It was his Servitors who convinced Negabekki that there was another path for her besides eventual destruction by the Game. It was him who Redeemed her, and it was him who carefully guided her to her current existence as Rebecca, a shining Cherub of the Sword. It was a Servitor of his who was acknowledged to have the best qualifications for the Word, and she didn't want to leave his service, so what was all the arguing about? Janus eventually stopped grumbling, and so it is that the General of the Host has now ultimate control over a Word encompassing weird, odd, and unusual lifestyles. He's not exactly sure what to do with his new toy. On the one hand, these people are rebelling against the norm: on the other, the norm is so infected by the Media that Laurence finds it hard to blame them much. On the gripping hand, "counterculture" can encompass such groups as "devout Christians" and "medieval re-creationists" (two groups that his Servitors often find useful), so the Word can be honorable and useful. The fact that some of these people set Laurence's teeth on edge is beside the point. Rebecca is pretty good with dealing with them, though. She likes them all (except for the various predators), and they like her. She understands that lots of them are profoundly lonely people, and tries her best to lead them to endeavors where they can meet like-minded individuals. She also enjoys tracking down Diabolicals (she knows all their tricks and strategies), and ripping them apart. Truth be told, she's sometimes a little lonely herself, but her fellow angels are starting to warm up to her. Rebecca gets very few marching orders (for a Servitor of the Sword). Laurence expects her to crack down on illicit drug use and violent behavior (even he doesn't expect her to make a dent in the rampant fornication, although adultery is a different story). Promoting ideals like courtesy, honor and keeping one's word is also part of her job, not to mention getting some of these people to attend religious services more often. Other than that, Laurence doesn't want to get too involved. If he did, he'd probably see things that would just bother him (like the fact that Rebecca doesn't bother ethereals at all, unless they're nasty), and make him have to do something officially. After all, to be honest, one of the major reasons he went for the Word in the first place was to demonstrate that he wasn't entirely... isn't 'square' the term, these days? ===== In Nomine stuff: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Everything else (not that there is, right now): http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/main.html Last updated 9/5/00 (this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? He knelt at the alter before walking to the confession boothe, prayed for the souls he had judged, and prayed that he would continue to judge fairly and rightly in HIS eyes. Slowly he stood, crossed himself and walk to the boothe and took a seat to wait. **** The candles flickered and a presence was there in the other side. Dominic looked through the grate and saw a face he had almost forgotten. "YOU... HOW DARE YOU COME HERE YOU WHO ARE CASTIGATED, THROWN DOWN FROM THE HIGHEST OF HEIGHTS...." Dominic spluttered, a fury rising in him. "me? yes i was wasn't i, but here i am.... you wanted a confession yes? well i shall give you one." the sibilant hissing voice of the Light almost mockingly spoke "I am still the lightbringer am i not? this was never taken from me, have you ever wondered why? I am choice, I am 'other ways' you see me as heresy because i give all another option, i know there is an Almighty but i offer the choice to not worship, to live to your own code, to do as you will." Dominic tried to resonate Lucifer, he tried and not once could he see the truth. "YOU... YOU DARE TO TEST MY PATIENCE..." "no, not at all, i would never do that. do you know why? no, you don't do you. when did you last look at yourself? you should sometime, in a nice quiet place where no one can find you or hear you. discard your robes and marvel in your form, for you are shaped by god, marvel in that fact, for we all should, we should all find pride in the fact that we are 'his' children, even if he no longer looks to us. but, i can not be bothered to stay any longer, for i know that my light still shines for i am made by 'he above' and i do 'his' will." Dominic sat there as the presence left, he sat there and wept for many hours. **** He stood and walked out of his cathedral, walked through heaven, past each of the great monuments and abodes of the other archangels, finally coming to a stop outside another cathedral. A single candle burned inside, the windows stained and shattered to spiderweb patterns, no hymns were sung in this cathedral anymore. The doors were still in good condition and swung open with barely a whisper, he walked in and sat at a bench. Others had seen this happen but the doors closed when they gathered to see. **** They were still gathered around the doors when they opened again some hours later, they stood there as the holiest seraph walked out, his cloak drawn about him tighter and his hood pulled even further over his visage. Slowly he walked back to his cathedral and lit a candle and offered up a prayer to those he had judged to soon. =========================================== There you go, thats one from me. not a proper confessional tale but a thought provoking muse none the less. If any one would care to write about what happened in the light bringers cathedral... *evil grin* Nick Sands sandsnick@hotmail.com www.angelfire.com/goth/psyber (updated tonight at about midnight gmt) _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Hello, he again. Just a thought that came to me, i think i've seen it in the digest before but i'm not to sure. Right, here is my latest musing... How would the Superiors differ if they were a different choir? what if michael was for instance a kyriotate? or if gabriel was a seraph? what about if lucifer was a habbalite? How would the war differ, what would be your prefered superior/choir modification? Ok, thats my latest musing done with for now, toodles for now, the website will be updated by midnight gmt with some more stuff on it as well, mostly shadowrun, and any other links i can find in the IN site. The more visitors i have to thew site the more often i'll update it. Actually, since he _was_ commanding a bunch of mercenaries, he presumably either ordered humans to be killed or actually did it himself. He'd need the Impudite of the War (or Death, but he's got more class than Sammi) attunement. Now, his _brother_ was the Gamester, before he got (really) Discordant and went over to Mammon. Valefor? I'm not sure about that -- she doesn't seem to follow any of the dissonance conditions there. Consider, too, her behind-the- scenes manipulations (via Gregor, Alys Vorpatril, etc.). No, she's Game. >o Ekaterin > > She's not a person; she's just an inflate-a-date for our mutant > Miles. Nahhhhhh. She's just the latest human in his set of conquests. Presumably the one that he's going to settle on for the purposes of the Role. >o Ivan Vorpatril > Human soldier, charmed by Miles. It sucks to be him. One day, one day, he will unmask himself as a Gamester as well -- who has been in deep cover for aaaages, keeping an eye on these other high-profile operatives.
