Fiction. Even with a wiggly baby! - --- "You?" Michael asked, surprised. The robed Seraph in front of him gazed back blandly. "I thought you were against this. Didn't you say something about 'pride' and 'hubris' in the Council meeting when we announced it?" Dominic murmured, "I also said I needed to atone. Is this not a fitting atonement?" _Well, it *would* be interesting to finally get to put the Hyena in his place,_ Michael thought, rubbing his chin with his hand. "Done. Where do you want the contest? And no legal debates." "Of course not. As to where..." The other Archangel thought for a moment, then pointed. The radiance in Heaven is not precisely transparent, nor solid. Where had been apparent bright sky, was now a glittering dome... with a hairline crack through its center. "Trying to imply something, Dominic?" the Archangel of War said, low and not terribly pleased. The silent gaze from beneath the cowl lasted for a long moment, then the hood dipped. "It is deserted. I think it would not do well for morale to have the contest either in my Tribunal, nor your Groves. The great entry hall there is open." "All right. We'll go there." Neither Seraph mentioned the name of "there," even in the celestial tongue. They knew, they knew the other knew, and there are some Words and Names that are rarely said, even in Heaven. "What weapon?" "Whatever comes to hand, I think." *** The two Seraphim faced each other across the expanse of the entry hall of what had once been the Cathedral of Light. Completing the square were two Malakim -- Laurence and Bronwen, the Servitor, as always, as her Master's shadow. "Whatever comes to hand, eh?" Michael grinned, his hand twitching. He could feel his axe, knew every rough spot and every smooth piece on it. It would take only the slightest bit of Essence to call it to him. Dominic looked back, yet silent, and put a hand to the edge of his cloak. In a gesture that was not meant to be flashy, but could not help itself, he drew it off and it unfurled to cover the floor -- and cover the floor, and cover the floor, like a pool of ink over the crystal. Michael raised himself above the wash of black with a wary flip of his wings. "A trap to smother me?" he asked, anticipation of the coming battle making him cheerful despite the possible dirty trick. "No," came the reply. "But it would not do to bleed upon this place. The footing will be stable." The Archangel of War scowled slightly and landed again, deciding that he would have preferred a dirty trick. "Ready, then?" The other Seraph -- its humanoid form tall, lean, and not particularly gendered -- nodded. Laurence was in the very act of saying, "Begin," when the two sprang at each other. They met bare-handed at first, each gripping the fist of the other, and then Michael easily shoved the younger Archangel away. Dominic rolled, and came up with one hand outstretched. A whispered bit of Latin, and there was a shining blade in that hand, forged of shining air, nearly as long as his own form. Michael grinned ferally, pulling his axe to his hand with a Song. _Thinks he can pull a Heavenly Judgment on me and stand back instead of doing his own fighting? Ha. I'm not going to forget that my opponent is *him* and not his little toy._ Though he braced for the huge blade to be flung at him, Dominic charged while holding it. Sword and axe clashed together, and then the dance of battle began in earnest. Each circled for an advantage, each lashed out with weapon and parried or dodged, each fell back and advanced as if choreographed. _He's better than I thought,_ Michael thought, noticing that the Sword of Judgment was long enough that he couldn't try tripping his opponent. _But,_ he decided, matter-of-factly, _he's not as good as I am._ And he knocked the sword away for long enough to score a long line down the chest of Judgment. Dominic hissed in pain, but brought his sword back into line, and the dance continued, with each seeking a flaw in the opponent's defenses, each exploiting what they found. To the two black-winged watchers, the pair were nearly a glittering flicker in the middle of the hall, where the blows were almost faster than the ringing of metal on metal. Occasionally something could be seen separate from the blur: Michael ducking and somehow getting inside Dominic's guard; the other Seraph bringing up a foot and kicking the Archangel of War in the chest to get him away; a fierce grin on Michael's face; a determined expression on Dominic's; Judgment overbalancing and falling to the ground, rolling away just before the axe of War thudded where his neck had been. Finally, somehow Michael was behind his opponent, and the flat of the axe-blade smashed into Dominic's head. Before he could recover, he was pinned down, a knee on his sword-holding arm, and an axe raised above him. The pose held for a long moment, long enough for the watching Malakim to see that both were bleeding from cuts and scrapes -- though Michael far less than his opponent. "Yield," Michael demanded. The moment stretched very long, though it was not long at all. "You have won this battle," Dominic said, with the calmness of accepted Truth all that showed in his voice and face. _So why don't I feel happier?_ Michael wondered, as he got up and backed away. He pulled a cloth from the air and walked away, cleaning his axe. *** Dominic watched after him, as his Bronwen brought him his cloak. He took it from her silently, enfolding himself into the blackness once again. She looked at him, while he continued to gaze after Michael until had gone from sight. Dominic's shoulders slumped, apparently only now showing the defeat he felt. Laurence looked worried, and finally slipped away himself, to give the older Seraph time alone. So it was only Bronwen who heard her Archangel whisper, with grief and old, old pain, "I don't think it worked." - ---------------------- Bronwen is Maurice's. http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine/servitors/Bronwen.htm - --Beth, typing w/a uncoopertive baby (iolanthe) causing typos. "Are you quite finished, Marc?" he queried, a touch of acerbity entering his voice. "Very nearly," came the ebullient tones of the Archangel of Trade. "Just one more thing, and I think you'll be as excited about this one as I am!" "This is a confession, not an advertising opportunity," the Archangel of Judgement repeated patiently. "What is it?" "I call it -- Soulbay." Marc's voice suggested that there should be trumpets in the background, or at the very least an enthusiastic tv jingle. "You'll love this one, Dom, you'll absolutely love it. It's the idea of one of my brightest new guys, and he's really got something good running here." "Soulbay?" Dominic queried mournfully, already dreading the worst. "It's really simple." There was a tinkle, as of a mobile phone being unfolded. "I'm buying people's souls on the Internet." A horrified pause. "You are WHAT?" "No, no, Dom. You've gotta look at it this way. Any human being is capable of disposing of his soul however he wants, right? So leaving aside the question of how we personally want them to dispose of them, or, like, they should all be devoted to God in the first place, I know that one, no problem with that one, there is absolutely, and I mean, absolutely, no philosophical or ethical objection that I can think of to putting together a contract where they agree to put our soul under our care and direction in exchange for money. Legal contract, man, legal contract." Dominic lowered his head. This had to be the absolute nadir. "You are openly encouraging the grossest habits of pecuniary obsession in connection with matters that should be purely spiritual. Marc, how could you be so . . ." "No, no," the Archangel of Trade broke in, "you don't get it yet, Dominic. The contract includes a deliberate agreement to obey commandments delivered by personal representatives of the divine power to whom they've sold their souls. Pure gold, I tell you. Diamonds. Platinum. Think about it." The pause that followed was pregnant with slowly dawning thought. The Seraph said, slowly, "So, by the terms of this contract, they are legally bound to -- for instance -- obey the ten commandments? Pray? Worship? Go to church on Sundays? On pain of losing all that money?" "You got it, dude," came Marc's voice. "And for a purely nominal surcharge, I'll give you lists of the people who've signed up." "Surcharge?" Dominic's voice was horrified. "You would ask me to pay money in order to further the work of God?" Marc's voice sounded equally horrified. "You don't think I'm doing this for free, do you?" "You will present me with the lists," Dominic hissed, "or by the living God, I will unionise your Cherubim!" "I'm sure we can come to an agreement on this one," Marc commented cheerfully, after a gasp of pained shock. "In the meantime, what about the confession aspect?" "Oh, yes. Go thou and sin no more." There was a pause. "The world is beautiful." Kobal is certainly one of the last Princes that an Archangel would have expected to redeem. The angels had been under the impression that Kobal enjoyed his job, that Hell would freeze over before Kobal retired; nothing could be farther from the truth. In truth, Kobal was getting weary of being the Prince of Dark Humor. All of the pratfalls had gotten old, the pranks stale... and he had started looking up, and remembering. Remembering how his jokes had made people happy. Remembering how he hadn't had to fight to keep himself alive. Remembering how he had been loved. Maybe, he thought... maybe there was still a chance in Heaven for him. He left Hell a day before the Game arrived. One of Kobal's servitors had noticed that he had been brooding a lot lately, and had asked Asmodeus to, ah, look into it. When the Prince of the Game arrived and found Kobal's throne of skulls empty but for a note which read "Out for a while, will send coats and mittens", his enraged scream destroyed most of the Principality, and levelled fully a third of Shal-Mari proper. A year after he left Hell - in which time he maintained fleeting contact with his servitors, much like Eli was doing with his own - Dominic began his series of confessions. Kobal saw a chance, found a Triad, and managed to pull together most of his Awe-Inspiring Demon Prince act. Of course they did not run away, as they were Angels of Judgment; all the same, two of the three were frightened out of their wits, and the third was demonstrating to himself that it's very difficult to sing the Celestial Song of Tongues when you're also trying to not bite your tongue off, and when Kobal handed them a letter to give to Dominic, they nodded and vanished promptly. Kobal promptly started making his way to Spain; he didn't want to stick around for when Dominic himself showed up. The confession went much as Kobal had expected. Dominic was quiet and respectful while he was in the booth, but once Kobal had left the cathedral, he could /feel/ the orders being given out. Still, he was determined to perform his penance; and when he had done so, a month later, he discovered that the way to Heaven was no longer barred to him. God had forgiven Kobal, and in humility Kobal ascended to the dusty plains outside of Heaven. His horse, robes and weapons conjured from dust, he rode for the Eternal City. There he found Michael and Laurence, and summoned the rest of the Archangels; he noticed Eli in the back, though nobody else seemed to. And after the short fight, when Dominic had fled and Kobal had been welcomed into the Eternal City, he was sorely disappointed to not see Eli in the crowd welcoming him. In the week since his return, Kobal has been granted the Word of Laughter again, and he rejoices in it. His servitorship to Novalis is no less a matter of joy to him; her kindness, he can tell, is unfeigned. Michael, likewise, and Blandine welcome him with open arms. Only Laurence and Jean remain even the slightest bit skeptical, and even Dominic has taken him out for a drink. Nobody has yet asked Kobal about the affairs in Hell. Whatever their reasons, he is glad of it. The War is nothing compared to the joy of being /home/. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2000 19:32:45 -0400 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: Re: IN> Michael's Challenges: Cloak and Axe At 11:44 AM -0400 10/21/00, Whistling in the Dark wrote: >Coooooooooooooooooooooooooooool.
