It used to be called the WEEKLY WORD, but that was back when Gabrielle was the editor. She was removed from her position a year or so back, accused of printing offensive material and then leaving copies of the paper where the grade-school kids could get at it. She hasn't been seen in the Journalism office since, and the paper comes out twice a semester or so without her help. [1] That's not such a bad thing, really - it gives some of the underclassmen a chance to shine. Roy, for example, is only a freshman and still manages to be the paper's star reporter. You'll see him in the front row at all the staff meetings, promoting exposés of one controversial issue or another. These don't usually make it into the paper; the administration tends to exercise editorial control. Still, it's obvious he's sincere in his efforts - - the eagerness is written on his face. He might even make a good editor someday. That is, if Barnabas doesn't take it first. [2] Barney's one of those transfer students - he used to be part of the A/V club. Since his arrival at HHH, he's been busy joining club after club: the drama club, the debate team, the yearbook staff. Where he's most comfortable, though, is the newspaper. He's a very talented photographer and has managed to ingratiate himself into most of the major cliques by promising flattering spreads. On the other hand, he doesn't have much interest in the investigative side of things - if he had his way, the paper would be all photos and advertisements. He's had a freshman year most would envy - but it's questionable how long he can keep up that pace. [1] Rumor has it that May works behind the scenes to keep it a going concern. [2] Barney. That's so uncool. Maybe he could drop the first syllable instead, like Xander or Nifer or Liam. * * * * * Jason Schneiderman, Editor, EDITORIAL HUMOR. They get to read peoples' memories with touch and a Perception roll, right? It seems like a Kronosian touch would be to add a little bit of bleed to this ability -- every time the Impudite touches anyone, they pick up a vague impression of the single worst experience that person had. They still need to make a Perception roll to get usable data, but the sensation of shattering betrayal that the woman you are kissing felt when she found her son's suicide note comes right through. This can quite effectively kill the pleasure from shaking hands, kissing, sex, or even draining Essence. No doubt it accounts for much of the drug abuse among these Impudites -- it's the only source of pleasure that's not tainted with agony. - -- Neel Krishnaswami neelk@cswcasa.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 08:51:23 -0700 (PDT) From: Maurice Lane Subject: IN> Minor Choir/Band update status Hey, did we miss a new Minor Choir/Band challenge in the mass of new stuff lately? Sue me.) In every school, there are people who defy categorization. Georgie McCormick (Sopomore): A transfer student from a midwestern state with a lot of cattle, Georgie is terribly shy around people, much preferring the company of animals. Puberty is causing his voice to crack, which makes his antisocial behavior worse. Still, he has made a friend in Novy, who he met in Honors Biology and has stuck up for him on several occasions. He has since adopted her as a 'little sister', despite her being older. He has an intense hatred for 'Hawg', Sheol High's heavyweight wrestler, eating machine, and general John Belushi clone. One fateful day, Hawg ate Novy's lunch, then mocked her vegan status. Georgie descended into a berserker rage, frothing at the mouth, and had to be pulled off him by both Big Mike and Dave Stone. Georgie is a member of 4 H and Future Farmers of America, and can often be found volunteering to feed and clean the cages of bio lab animals. Marcus Nieman (Junior): Clean-cut. Preppy. Filthy rich. Marcus wouldn't be out of place in a private school, but in the public system he stands out like, well, a manicured thumb on a blue-collar worker. When asked why he attends HHH, he responds "The people here are much more interesting." He's practically made of money, and while not exactly shy about it, he doesn't flaunt it, either. He regularly buys lunch for those students too poor to afford it, who have their lunch money stolen, or whose lunch gets eaten by the Hawg. Marcus is Class President and Chairman of Student Government, as well as the founder of the HHH Young Republican Chapter. Eli Panentheus (Senior): Eli makes Ferris Bueller look dull. He rarely comes to class, never does his homework, and misses all the pop quizzes, but somehow still manages to get straight A's. Some teachers never see him except midterms and finals, and even then he comes in late to the test. How he manages to churn out college-level theses in under thirty minutes is a source of consternation to the straighter-laced faculty, as is the fact that while he has been offered scholarships to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Oxford, Caltech, Julliard, and Randolph-Macon Woman's College (don't ask), he's planning on taking a few years off to go backpacking around Europe. Eli is a member of every single club, organization, and sport HHH has to offer. He makes it a point to date every single girl in school at least once, and while he never takes advantage of them or pushes them farther than they're willing to go, after a date with Eli they're much better kissers. He has no steady girlfriends, preferring the girl of the moment on his arm, yet he apparently has some history with Gabrielle. The two dated heavily their freshman year, so the story goes, but the reasons for their breakup have never been made known. Still, it was after they split that Gaby started having mood swings. It's rumored that they get back together every so often. I'd like someone with a better grasp of Islam to do Khalid, the foreign exchange student. ;) - -- Casca "...I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above Him were seraphs, each with six wings: with two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying...At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook, and the temple was filled with smoke." -- Isaiah 6:2,4 _______________________________________________________ Are you a Techie? Addendum -- Despite the fact that Marcus is about the only guy in school who could afford to indulge Lily's expensive tastes every day of the week and twice on Sundays, and despite the fact that she'd really like to get her little mitts on any sizable chunk of Marcus' bankroll, Marcus won't go near her with a ten-foot cattle prod. Merely *mentioning* her or her habit of trading *ahem* for expensive dates and presents is one of the few things that can make Marcus visibly lose his cool. And the fact that Lily is in every Honors Business class that he is, is neck-and-neck with him in class standings, and sits right alongside him every day only makes him boil over even worse... - -- Chuckg ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 12:46:34 EDT From: Galen Silversmith Subject: Re: IN> An actual, non-weird question. > Return-Path: moelane_1999@yahoo.com > Believe it or not, I'm actually working on a PC > (online only, but what the heck). I got inspired on the metro last night. :) Librarian Beth (the good one) Librarian Beth is a sweet and helpful woman who knows exactly where everything is in the library. Give her the beginning of a quote, and not only will she be able to finish it, but she'll give you the title, author, and Dewey decimal number of the book it's in. When she's on duty, the library is a place that students can do anything, provided they're not being too noisy or rowdy. Librarian Beth (the bad one) In contrast, the other librarian Beth can be, well, grouchy sometimes. Like on days ending with "y." If a student ever has an overdue library book, it's this Beth who seems to be on duty, with blood chilling glares. She tolerates no noise in her library above a very low decible rating (and she has equipment to measure it!). Woe to any students who try to replace a book on the shelves, she's always caught them in the act and given them a lecture on proper shelving technique (along with detention for ignoring the "Do not reshelve books" signs scattered throughout the library). If you have any questions of her, make sure they are posed in perfect grammar and clarity, otherwise you will be the recipient of what has been termed "death by a thousand nitpicks." Co-principal "Archdean" For some reason, this co-principal is always referred to as the "Archdean." Nobody seems to quite know her real name, not even the other faculty members. However, she's almost uniquely suited to running Higher Heavens High. She always seems to know exactly what's going on, and asks students for their version of what happened so she can get an idea of whether the student is really remorseful over what happened or whether it is just trying to weasel its way out of something. She's considered to be fair by the "good kids," but the "bad kids" would much rather see... Co-principal Lilith Robinson Co-Principal Lilith always dresses smartly and has a smile on her face. She's considered a pushover by many of the kids, because she's willing to let them bargain their way out of just about anything (provided there weren't too many witnesses). Her office is unique in that it has no door. On her first day as co-principal, she had the door removed. Nobody knows why, and most people are afraid to ask. Despite a pleasant demeanor, she's often thought to have a dark side to her that she doesn't let out in public (at least, not where any students could see it). And, one student... Nybbas (freshman) Nybbas, or "Nyb" as he's sometimes called, is one of the few "bad kids" who has dived into an extra-curricular activity at the school. Prior to his attendance, the Higher Heavens High school newspaper ("The Voice from Above") was a small paper, devoted to school issues. It was a bit bland, but people generally respected it. However, Nyb came in and took it over. Within a month, everything in the paper was much more sensationalist. Somehow, he even instituted a secret "page 3" insert that the school printer claims he never printed. (Larry did get a glance of this insert, and he went as red as Nyb's hair.) Despite being somewhat of a small (and unconventional looking) teen, Nyb constantly has a group of kids following him, telling him what a great guy he is, how cool he is, etc. One thing that even the "good kids" will give him credit for, is that he managed to get the school newspaper reporters real equipment, rather than the stuff from the 50's that they were using before he came. Of course, this eq uipment immortalized some rather embarrasing moments (there was an article on cheerleader bloopers, as well as an expose on 'Behind the Bleachers' which showed Novy in a somewhat compromising position with Andre). Nyb has also taken over the yearbook, and he's working on tapping into the school PA system (aided in this by his friend Vap) to start a morning announcement program. Give her an expensive date and nice presents, and she'll take you anywhere. She's also an Honors Business student (right up alongside there with Marcus Nieman, the school's chief Young Republican) and an extremely sharp little minx on the make. If there were PhD's in gold-digging, she'd have earned one before she was out of junior high. Her ambition in life is to marry rich and w/o a prenup, then skin him alive in the settlement and move on to the next deal. > And, one student... > > Nybbas (freshman) > > Nybbas, or "Nyb" as he's sometimes called, is one of the few "bad kids" who > has dived into an extra-curricular activity at the school. She was the head of the cheerleading squad at the school the "Bad kinds" transferred from, and has set her sights on taking over the HHH squad, when she isn't trying to seduce whatever boy or girl has struck her fancy this time. The fact that she has not yet managed to get her claws into either Larry, Big Mike or Dave Stone infuriates her, and anybody who makes the mistake of seeming to like Gabrielle more will earn her wrath. Bill (senior): Almost never found anywhere other than the smoking area, Bill is the one to go to if you want to learn the finer points of pyromania. While there have been rumors that he was responsible for the series of fires that helped close the other high school down, nobody has ever managed to prove anything. Has been trying to date Gabrielle ever since he transferred to HHH, but she refuses to have anything to do with him. Thinks "Further" is a punk. "Further" (sophomore): Biff got his nickname by willing to go further than anybody else, in anything else. He devotes far more hours to making his battered Cobra convertible louder and faster than any other car on the road, has challenged Hawg to more eating contests than either can count (the contests consisting of how many freshmen each can bully a lunch away from, then eat,) keeps his car stereo turned up loud enough to set off car alarms (when the rumbling from his exhaust pipes doesn't do the job,) and despite not being nearly as talented as he thinks he is, is convinced that his thrashmetal garage band is destined for greatness. Thinks Bill is a wimp. ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #1875 ******************************** The material here is (C) 2000 Steve Jackson Games, Incorporated.
