Khalid Abdullah (Sophomore): Quiet, eloquent, and a _terror_ on the field, but with a notoriously quick temper, Khalid is one of the more legendary figures at Higher Heavens, stemming from his role in having resident bruiser "Mag" incarcerated, with David's help, when "Mag" started going over the line. It was widely expected, after the "Mag" incident, that Khalid would become captain of the Team when Mike finally stepped down... ...but then Larry came along. After that... Khalid became more of a recluse, partly because most of _his_ friends were also Larry's friends... and Khalid did _not_ get on with Larry, seeing himself as having been 'passed over' for the golden boy of the moment. Larry's devout Christianity was also a sticking point between the two, with Khalid's equally devout faith in Islam often leading to vehement arguments between them. It's rumoured (largely by the Bad Kids - Mal in particular) that he was inspired to convert to Islam by a particularly impassioned article by Gabrielle on the faith in the school newspaper. Khalid refuses to dignify such rumours with a response. (Oddly enough, it was shortly after that article was published that Gabrielle was removed from her position as Editor. It's whispered - very , very quietly - that she actually stormed out of Mr. Dominic's office after he accused her of publishing offensive material. Gabrielle has no comment.) Khalid eventually convinced himself he'd been overlooked because of his religion, and that the others were secretly taunting him about it... with not a little help from the Bad Kids, who _were_ bullying him about it. Which led him to become more fanatic and impassioned on the subject, which led to further bullying, which led to... ...It's _rumoured_, but never to Khalid's face, that the Bad Kids almost - _almost_ - persuaded him to help them 'fix' the last Big Game. Khalid rarely talks about it. Still, whatever happened at the Game, Khalid has started to mend his bridges with the other Good Kids, and is calm, but expressive as ever, when it comes to the subject of his religion (despite the best attempts of the Bad Kids). He's also noticed the ...disturbing... effect that "Beli" is having on Gabrielle. He's not sure what to do about it - not yet - but Gabrielle _is_ one of his oldest friends, and he's not about to let some little psycho pyromaniac drive her over the edge. He's been there himself... The other Good Kids are still worried about him, though - while he's decided to attend counselling sessions with Mr. Yves, and he's become less of a recluse, (not much, but a little less...) school gossip has it that "Mag" has finally been released from prison, and that he's returning to Higher Heavens. And when he does... Imran ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 19:42:45 +0100 From: "I. Imran ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 13:53:26 -0500 From: "Charles Glasgow" Subject: IN> Higher Heavens High Plot Seed -- The Lure Of Flame In addition to characters, let's do storylines/adventure seeds... Everybody knows about the Bad Kid "Bill", the pyromaniac. And how Gabrielle's been acting even more erratic recently, going from her usual mood swings and flaring temper to verging on extremes of behavior that are starting to make her friends wonder if she doesn't genuinely need help. What none of them know is why. Gabrielle's dark secret is that she, herself, is a pyromaniac. She's known this ever since she was a little girl, but she's kept it repressed because she knew that setting things on fire (except when helping light the charcoal grill, or with little pieces of paper in the bathroom sink, or by collecting candles, or burning incense, or...) was Just Plain Wrong. Part of her mood swings and erraticism are simply because that's how she'd be anyway, but some of them are because whenever Gabrielle started thinking about fire too much she immediately rushed out and found something, *anything* else to focus all of her attention on, to sublimate all of her building obsession onto until the urge to Burn Something passed. This has worked for her most of her life, even if it's meant that she got a little twitchy sometimes. But then Bill came along. Bill, who's always lighting something up. Bill, who does party tricks with fire. Bill, who lights firecrackers, does impromptu flaming gasoline performance art in the parking lot, and who's *always talking about burning, burning, burning...* There's *something* about Bill makes the buried destructive urges within Gabrielle want to come out and play all the more, and more, and more, and MORE... In her calmer moments, Gabrielle is scared of what's happening. She's afraid that if her friends find out what's going on in her head, they'll all think she's crazy and not like her. She's afraid they'll take her away, and put her in some 'special' school. She's afraid of being called the freak, of doing something genuinely wrong, of burning something that actually broke the law or hurt someone... of ending up as one of the Bad Kids. She's afraid to tell anybody, and yet she has absolutely no idea what to do to solve this on her own. And every chance he gets, Bill's smirking face is right there in front of her, asking her if she wants to borrow his lighter... - -- Chuckg ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 15:10:24 -0400 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: Re: IN> An actual, non-weird question. Novalis has extremely few Malakim. They're too violent. Of course they are the Warriors of Heaven, but she prefers peaceful solutions. She loves Nature as it is. She's into(more accurately, probably started) the whole flower-child, Summer of Love thing. Vapula has extremely few (well, no) Calabim. They're too disruptive. Of course they are the Warriors of Hell, but he prefers more subtle solutions. He wants to remake Nature with his devices. He's into (and might very well have had a hand in starting) the whole techno-dystopia, Future of Neon thing. Back-to-basics hippies, people living in recyceld-material houses, holistic lifers cooking with solar ovens, people who buy and use clean solar power in general, "Keep Our Wilderness Untouched By Cities" protesters, sustainable living researchers... all except the furthest fringe protesting the unrestricted use of technology as an ill, but in favor of finding out new, *planet-friendly* technologies as the appropriate means of advancing humanity. And all of them in Novalis' corner. Jean, frankly, is hampered in his efforts to combat Vapula, since they're so similar. The same would go for any almost-opposite pair of Superiors. Belial was able to smack down Oannes, yet is in virtual stalemate with Gabriel. But who better to oppose the Demon Prince of Technology than a nature-loving Archangel who even concentrates her forces, as does he, on the non-warrior types? Vapula, of course, thinks Jean is his primary enemy. It's reasonable, and Jean obligingly supports the fiction. But in the end, if he's brought down, it may not be because humanity figured out how to love only good technologies, but rather because humanity has taken an altogether more selective approach to what technologies they use, leaving Vapula virtually no inroad. While Vapula's fighting the batle with Jean, Novalis may just quietly sneak in an win the war behind his back. Some students have said that, after one of Song's performances, even Mr. Dominic was seen to cry... According to rumour, Mr. Dominic very, very gently asked the teacher to leave, just before Song was suspended. With Song's suspension (indefinite, as far as the others know), one of her friends, Izzy, has taken her place. Izzy's good - not as good as Song was, but still a talent in her own right (she's thinking about going into a solo music career). One such involves the predecessor to the two Beths. Before the 2Bs came to HHH, the school librarian was Rafe, or Mr. Rafe if ole' Blood-and-guts Dommy was around. Before Sheol High was shut down and the students were... integrated?... into one school, Mr. Rafe was the school librarian, and like T2Bs, he knew everything about where to find any tidbit you needed for a report or special project for a class. Mr. Jean St. Dieux, one of the Science teachers, especially enjoyed getting together with Rafe after hours in the Library, to work on his Doctoral thesis with the one person who valued research and finding new knowledge as much as Jean. Friendly and an easy-going extrovert, nearly everybody at HHH liked Mr. Rafe. Which is why the whole school went into shock and mourning when the PA came on to announce that he had died in a tragic car wreck with one of SH's students. Ian de Lege was nobody's friend, one of the class bullies who liked to take his meanness on the road, and was especially fond of picking on the "kids" at Terra Corporea Jr. High. Rafe was driving to the University Library to check out a new immunology book for permanent loan to HHH's library, when he crashed into Ian's battered broken-down wreckmobile, a rusted piece of Detroit steel that was still solid enough to kill Rafe, but not solid enough to protect Ian from the wreck. The fire and destruction from the resulting fireball [firebug Bill was seen in the area at the time, but nobody was ever able to pin anything on him, as usual] left nothing but charred steel -- no bodies were ever found, but everyone agrees, except possibly Counselor Yves Toothayoo [writers note: too thayoo is the phonetic spelling of tau-omicron-upsilon theta-epsilon-omicron-upsilon -- koine greek for [of] the god, or less literally, of GOD], that nobody could have survived such a cataclysm. Rumor surrounding the event said that Mr. Rafe could have veered off and avoided the collision, but didn't since he was sandwiched between TCJH buses full of "the littles" -- veering off would have resulted in loss of human life even worse than what did happen. For this, HHH's students rightly view him as a hero -- the goodies because he sacrificed himself so others might live, the baddies because he removed the one SH student who even scared them. Song: Yep, that's really her name. Well, "Birdsong Moonbunny Smith," but Song will do. (Parents. Hippies. They're often blamed for her "loose morals." More on that later.) She's a junior now, but she's younger than the other juniors -- way back in their school careers, she was promoted up a class or so, partially because of her musical ability. She regularly ranks highly in state choral contests, and the school is... well, was... proud of her. Nobody talks about it much. When the juniors were freshmen, Song was drifting away. She hung out with some of the "other" kids in school as well as the junior high kids, whom she seemed to have a knack for. People wouldn't have minded so much, except there were rumors that she'd gotten pregnant -- worse yet, off one of the JH'ers. (And if she did, well... she never seemed to get *very* pregnant, which would in itself be a shocker back then.) She nearly got expelled by Mr. Dominic, too, for some other stuff. She's still in the school, but she doesn't socialize with the main cliques much -- too many uncomfortable feelings. The Bad Kids would have loved to have her join. She's pretty, she's talented, and you'd think she'd have a grudge against all of her former friends. But no, she's yet refused to say a single bad word about them. To anyone. Avoiding her old friends, who she *wants* to be with but is too embarassed to ask, she has to avoid the unwanted attentions of the Bad Kids as well, both bullying and propositioning. Put it all together, and most of the time she just wants to be left alone. You'll occasionally find her in the remote chorus room after hours, waiting until the whole room is empty. When she thinks she's alone, she'll practice her singing, or her flute. When the school is almost empty, and only a few people are walking the halls of HHH on their own business, the echoing sound of a sweet lament may carry through the school from a point that seems miles away. Said favor, of course, being a fresh delivery of Calabite gonads on a stick... Still, as a tactic it is better than accepting a rite from Asmodeus... *g* > And just hope that you don't feel the urge to be too > selfless to the Taker ... (Extra marks if you > reference the most recent conference in Kyoto on ozone xmissions) The Kyoto conference? Novalis? *LOL* Malphas had his grubby paws all over that, as far as I'm concerned. (Any event which, in the guise of 'preserving the environment', votes for economic sanctions that would effectievly cripple the economy of the Western World while conditions are such that the other half of the world would just sign the treaty and then blow off the rules, has just *got* to be working for or duped by Factions. Or maybe Dark Humor, if Kobal's branched out into political jokes. The Media could care less, just so long as somebody argues about something enough to make it good fodder for the talking heads on the newsmagazine shows to kick around...) Or maybe even Vapula himself did it, if anybody explained "reverse psychology" to him. Anyway, I really don't think that Novalis was involved in Kyoto, simply 'cause I don't want to think that she was that *stupid*. [1] - -- Chuckg [1] I do not believe in a poisoned, deforested, strip-mined world, OK? I just believe that most of the political activist environmentalists who we actually see on TV (which is not necessarily most of the political activist environmentalists period) can't do simple math. [2] [2] Given that one of my weaknesses is getting sucked into long heated political arguments online, it was most likely very stupid of me to post this. But have you ever done something you *knew* was really bad for you in the long run, but you just couldn't stop yourself... .. hey, waaaaaaaaaaait a minute... .. OUT! OUT, ACCURSED SHEDITE! *damn!* - -- Chuckg ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 17:57:30 -0600 From: "ben" Subject: Re: Novalis and threats (was Re: IN> The hopefully to someday be banned Kobal thread) > for or duped by Factions. You offend all true Kobal fanboys with your impertinent remarks. Kobal *invented* political jokes. He also invented amateur political punditry; nothing amuses him more than ignorant voters. So ironic! So devilish! A thousand curses on you for your out-in-left-field misinterpretation of the dark one! And regardless of one's political opinion of Kyoto (which is colored by half a dozen different factors; you can paint it as the saviour of humanity or the destruction of life as we know it, whichever your particular agenda requires), it's reasonable to guess that Novalis may have *initiated it*, but Malphas, Furfur, and maybe Haagenti *co-opted* it and made it theirs. She just couldn't take the tag-teaming and is now trying to salvage of it what she can, with an assist from Marc. > Chuckg Ben ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 18:58:40 -0500 From: "Prodigal" Subject: Re: IN> Higher Heavens High -- The Misfits From: "Casca" > On Wed, 25 October 2000, "Prodigal" wrote: > > > "Further" (sophomore): Biff got his nickname by willing to go further than > > Personally, I would have made his real name Francis. ;) I resent you for thinking of that before I did, Casca. ;) Although what was the real name of Brendan Fraser's character in Airheads? That would work really well, too. OK, so we've got Brendan as "Further," Steve Buscemi as Bill, and before this degenerates further into another casting thread I really do apologise to everybody... ;;;) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Oct 2000 23:48:30 GMT From: "Jo Hart" Subject: Re: IN> Re: Pathetic little leeches (was Thoughts About Michael) >From: "Krishnaswami, Neel" >Oh, I like this! I like that a lot, Neel. The other thing I was thinking about Impudites of Kronos is that there is a Catholic notion that going to confession is somewhat proof against the wiles of Satan. To use this in a game, I'd say that Impudites of Fate can only read a victim's history from the present back until his last (genuinely contrite) confession. Anything in the past beyond that is considered to have been absolved and wiped from the record, by the grace of God. So soldiers of God who know that they are facing demons of Fate will always be encouraged to go to confession regularly, partly for the good of their souls, but mainly to avoid sensitive information about Heaven's plans from inadvertently falling into the hands of the enemy. (Still think Laurence is a nut for pushing Catholicism so hard?) Whilst the Impudites might prefer to mix with people who don't have anything more traumatic in their history than arguing with their spouse about which film to see at the cinema the previous night, encouraging one's servants to go to confession is definitely courting dissonance for Fate's demons. jo _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Is giving people choices of what they'd like to use bad? No. Does the creation of a different version invalidate the previous version? No. I saw Lily, and I personally thought it applied more to an Andre/Andrea-type character. Nothing against that version, just my personal preferences. I felt that offering a different take on it was perfectly acceptable. I don't think that there is a "dibs" call on this list and that going first means that what that person does is set in stone. Even if I'm wrong, I'm sure that the list administrator won't come kick my door down and take all my In Nomine books. I don't hold anything against Charles for this, but I think that sort of attitude is damaging to the whole list. It discourages lurkers or rare posters (of which I am one) even more than flamewars over the L-girl. So, now I'll provide another alternative version of a HHH student. Andre/Andrea (juniors) Andre and Andrea are fraternal twins. At least, they're thought to be twins, no one has actually seen them together. They are considered to be the most desirable members of either sex at Higher Heavens High (people may want to date Big Mike, Larry, or Novy, but they _want_ Andre or Andrea). Both of them know all the less conspicuous spots at school where teachers are not likely to come upon them and their companion of the moment. Both of them have the reputation of going through significant others (neither one seems to be too terribly choosy about the sex of their companion) like kleenex. The one person who has really kept their interest is Novy, though even she has felt the power of their charms. (Most disturbing to Big Mike is that Novy seems to have more of a reaction to Andrea than Andre, making him think that maybe Novy isn't quite like the rest of the girls at school.)
