The idea of IN RoS is still intriguing. (For those who know not RoS... Think "Terminator times 17." The future depicted from the first movie; I never saw the second. And look here: http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/books/ReignSteel/ ) Not to give any spoilers, the premise is that a paranoid AI wakes up, decides that humanity is going to blow itself to smithereens within 50 years or so, and doesn't want to be blown with the little apes. (It's a secret military comp, and would be ground zero...) So it infects a bunch of other supercomps with its AI virus, and they wake up, with personality twists depending on the other data in their banks, as well as interactions with previous programming and personal experiences. E.g., while "Overmind" is pretty rabidly anti-human, Zone London is an intellectual who doesn't mind humans so long as they don't interfere with it, and Zone Mexico City wants _no_ biological life at all. (Cooties! Cooties!) The computers plot together, get control of giant factories and key military production plants, release plagues, yadda, and eventually take over. Some of the AIs created then perish. (Some get trashed by the other AIs for being soft on humans...) New AIs are created to take over administration of other zones. As it happens, one of them, Brisbane, would get along swimmingly with Vapula... (Whereas Saminga and Zone Mexico City would be cute together if Mexico City could stand all the nasty drippybits in corpse-hosts; "Zombi Earth!" "No! MechaEarth!") Now... To fit into IN... Clearly this needs to slip under the nose of Lightning somehow; this is easier if the supercomp invention had no infernal influence. (Yup, once again, humanity done it to ourselves!) Keeping it under that radar probably requires that Jeanite Kyrios possessing the supercomps need more than the 1 Force usually required -- call it 4-5 for an unawakened one, 6+ for an awakened AI, and they can't trivially access protected memory banks. Letting Overmind awaken: The site where Overmind (Manilla?) woke was ground zero for a couple of celestials -- a Vapulan and a Sparkie. Any weirdness in the computer was attributed to the other, until it was too late. (Maybe an infernal intervention was involved -- maybe not. Does it really matter? O:> ) Some of the supercomp sites would have become Tethers -- demonic and many angelic sites might not have noticed, and Lightning strongholds might not have realized what they were seeing, or where it came from. (Jean himself probably figured it out quickly, and put in defenses, but thought that it was a Technology plot -- so some of the defenses had gaping holes for an AI.) Lightning begins an investigation... Sometimes "slow and careful" loses the race. The Zoneminds release the plagues and while celestials are wasting time investigating each other, the AIs take the production and military points they need. (Some celestials may _agree_ that, with all the humans sick, it's a good thing for 'bots to be defense forces. After all, their side has Vapula/Jean, so it's clearly more advantageous for celestials, right?) A certain amount of time is spent chasing after Jordi and trying to get him to do more than snicker; Dominic is near to calling for a trial of the "anti-human" Archangel, while in Hell, Asmodeus is casting around for signs that Saminga might have moved prematurely. There is talk about elevating a new Wordbound of Disease, and likely a contest started for infernal candidates. When the Zomeminds make their move openly, war on Earth nearly provokes Armegeddon. Awakened supercomps in angelic Tethers are either pro-human and destroyed, or anti-human and wipe out their own Tetherstaff. (Ones in demonic Tethers are more likely to be anti-human, and wipe out the staff...) When Jean and Vapula are accused of trying to bias the prophecied "contest of champions" to themselves, they glare at each other across the battlefield and say (paraphrased), "Nuh-UH! It's not _me_ behind any of this." Seraphim hear this as true and there is much bogglement. While the celestials run around trying to locate powerful rogues who might be behind this, or powerful human hackers pulling the supercomputer strings, the Zoneminds consolodate their power. There are larger pockets of "no man's land" in some areas, where celestials (likely including Belial himself, and Saminga) decided that the situation warranted getting out of hand, and other areas have isolated pockets of survivors, where other celestials (possibly including Novalis and Eli, and definitely Jordi (for animals)) interfered with the destruction. Doomsday cults and survivalist nuts all feel vindicated. Davidians are in their element. So are Malphans. Beleth is giggling disturbingly to herself, and Blandine is being scarce and tear-stained. Baal and Michael are taking more computer programming classes. Asmodeus is sitting on Vapula, who is howling, "Wanna PLAAAAAAAY." (Well, maybe that's the Heavens Elementry setting. Ahem.) Jean is gulping Motrin by the handsfulls as he tries to figure out what is in the best interests of the Symphony, which isn't helped by the other Superiors clamoring for him to DO something. He's taken to vanishing almost as much as Eli, leaving stickynotes on his door saying, "I WANT TO DESTROY THE ZONEMINDS TOO! BUT I'M NOT SURE I SHOULD. GO AWAY!" (Jordi wants the 'bots to have a virus in them so they won't shoot at animals. Novalis wants the AIs to be made nice. Dominic wants them defanged and tried by human courts. David and Michael keep hoisting sledgehammers meaningfully. Gabriel hasn't been around, but there are often slagged 'bots around -- however, she _hasn't_ yet slagged any of the Zoneminds themselves, which bothers those who believe in her prophetic abilities. Yves murmurs things about fates and destinies and free will that, as usual, are enigmatic.) Enter the "current day" of the RoS timeline, only now angels and demons are trying to figure out how to reverse matters, if they even _should_ reverse matters, and how to fight their own War in the middle of a war of AI against humanity. God and Lucifer are, as always/often, silent on the matter. - --emccoy@nh.ultranet.com // arcangel@io.com In Nomine Line Editor RPG links; Random name list, Art: http://www.io.com/~arcangel/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Oct 2000 09:27:55 -0400 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: Re: IN> Higher Heavens High -- The Faculty At 1:04 PM -0500 10/25/00, Charles Glasgow wrote: >----- Original Message ----- >From: > >> Excuse me while I take a shot at these. I was just browsing through the 2nd printing and appreciating how wonderful it is to have designations like "partially restricted" and such, when I came across one that confused me: Impudite of Death. Why is this one "partially restricted" and not "restricted"? I can't find anything in it that's not Impudite. They can suck essence from corpses (Impudite) and earn no dissonance from killing humans (which would only matter to Impudites). Asmodeus' Shedim are the same way. Both parts of their attunement deal with their resonance, yet it is "partially restricted." If this is because of Asmodeus' default ability to identify members of a particular band, then why is the Calabim attunement "restricted" and not "partially restricted" also. Does Asmodeus just not want his demons to be able to identify Calabim hit squads? Besides those little problems, I am loving this book. I think Smith's art looks much better in greyscale, actally, than in the overly bright 4-color scheme that it was in originally. I'm still crossing my fingers that Ramon Perez's pics of the AA's and DP's get in the 2nd Edition (whenever that comes out). The ones in Superiors 4 are just perfect. "Paranoia" is a black-comedy RPG in which the players play the citizens of "Alpha Complex," an underground bunker city, left after a nuclear holocaust. The Complex is governed by an insane bureaucrat of a computer, itself paranoid. Deviating from its orders counts as treason, punishable by execution. *Obeying* its orders is equally lethal, and is sometimes treason anyway. (I *did* sayt it was insane.) So being paranoid oneself is the only possible survival mode. The death rate in the game is so high, one doesn't really play a character; one plays a series of clones of a character, each run off by the computer to replace the previous hapless instance. Cf. Trauma and vessel death in IN. As they arrive as the new faculty members and possibly students for HHH in the Corporeal World. The town of Symphony is an extremely isolated place and worst of all the ENTIRE PLACE has similar undertones to it though on outwards it seems to be a fairly normal place with perhaps just a wee bit too much focus on their Football and cheerleading obsession. (comming from a football town this means alot) In truth HHH and the now closed down Sheol High and indeed the entire town of Symphony are a joint creation of Kronos and Yves using their powers to take fragments of each of the superiors they have had acess too in their long lifespan to craft vessels for them without their knowledge. This experiment is of the utmost and awesome importance to Kronos and Yves because it is an analylsis of the most intimate relationships between each superior and what will move them to their fate and destiny. With a very odd metaphor. An entire campaign can be set around this oddity given the bizzare adventure seeds such as a student's corruption/destruction leads to an odd effect on the main, the actual superiors finding out and reacting with BIZZARE methods (Nybbas: THE HELL! MY NOSE IS NOT THAT BIG! Laurence: Ummm Blandine I...swe..err...ummm.. Belial: Alright! I get to torch em all!), or preventing the town from being discovered, destroyed. More pratically I would LOVE to play the adventure leading to the... BIG GAME and the PCs can read anything into it, especially when in My game I'd prefer to see the BIG game as a scrimmage match between the Sheol students and the HHH kids to see who fill be on the final team for the next season. (brrr now that gives me shudders) A PC watching his Archangel get sacked has got to be painful....of course the Sheol students will cheat....and oh heavens what will happen if Lily or Gabrielle tries to seduce a teacher. - -Charlemagne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Oct 2000 10:57:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Walton Subject: Re: IN> Will the Servitor of the Media reading this list kindly stop plagarizing us? - --- Prodigal wrote: > From: "Maurice Lane" > > > > It has vampire cows. > > > > This actually frightened me.
