Does that 4 additional essence *also* extend the radius of the song, or would he need to add additional essence to extend the radius? Same song, next question. The initial expenditure of Essence shows a drawing into the celestial's power to help insure a successful performance - and that's all. >Same song, next question. Now, I know that's a long shot, but is there any database of important NPCs anywere? I like to play Vampire, and one thing I like about it is: whenever you go in a specific area (or city), you know who has the most influence. For example, if you happen to spend a few nights in Paris, you know that any mistake will send you to Villon's court. And knowing his reputation, you don't want that to happen... I heard about a few NPCs that would be looking over some areas (e.g. New-York, Las Vegas, etc), but here again, there is no consistency. A central database of characters by area would be nice. It could contain the limits of the area, the main characters and their personalities (and maybe special powers). I think it would help us keep a consistent universe. If anything good cover art is much, much more important than good interior art. My guess is that except for hard-core players of a system at least 30-50 of sales is driven by cover art. If SJG is looking to increase impulse sales than the art is going to need to change, otherwise they will justy keep selling to the same group of people. Making a bomb "younger" just makes the physical materials of which it is composed younger -- it won't move the clock back in time. It's a physical effect, not a chronological effect. Art is way down on my list of things to consider in an RPG book. Of course, you want something to attract interest on the cover. And a *few* well-chosen illustrations insdie could help players in visualizing the events of their game. But beyond that -- RPGs are a matter of joint imagination, of making up your own pictures. Other people's pictures are very secondary. And they can be a problem. I have a couple of RPG books -- the "Liber Servitorum," with a picture of a tattooed, gun-toting demon on the front, and the "Over the Edge" rulebook with a woman wearing a hangman's noose, said noose being tugged by some unseen person's hand -- that I don't like to leave lying around the house, because the cover art is just plain too icky. Not badly done -- dark, evil-looking. Yeah, yeah, this is all very cool. It is not, however, a flavor of cool I want to leave around for my mother-in-law or my three-year-old to come across. Subject: IN> Re: A Fan's Concern: Cover Art All right. I'm just going to respond to several points, and leave it all in peace, so as not to start the fifteen digest long flame war this might turn into. a) I too buy rulebooks for their content, but one cannot deny that cover art is what gets some people to look at a rulebook in the first place, and actually look at the content. When there are so many roleplaying companies out there, each producing one or two systems, you have stand out somewhere. The reason VtM and WoD (speak not the acronyms) have done so well is not because they had a good system (let's be honest, it stinks), but they (1) had a seriously developed new style world (like a lot of other games) and (2) Made their books highly aesthetically pleasing. b) The concept for the Superiors II cover was fine, it covered it completely, with the exception of Kobal. But when I saw the cover and the *quality* of the artwork, I figured that was Kobal's joke, mainly to make us laugh at the publisher. c) As for the so-called chronology, it wasn't meant to be in chronological order. It was spinning outward from the starting point of the main rulebook and following in that order. (Yes, I consider the Libers to be more core to the gaming system than the APG and IPG, on most accounts, since the Libers introduce new rules and further develop the gaming system, while the APG and IPG are more roleplaying tips and are cursed with the Check Digit Table Discord, but that's another conversation.) That's for you nitpickers. d) So not to seem like I'm bashing every artist who works for SJG, interior art for In Nomine has definitely developed very well. It's gone from being a slight off-branch of GURPS-style artwork to it's own feel and style. Good job! e) And to the man who suggested an In Nomine Art Book, once there is enough art to do one, rock on! I'd love to just have the interior pictures for Superiors I and Superiors II, especially the title pictures for each superior, and the cover painting for the Revelations cycle. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 12:04:40 -0500 From: Whistling in the Dark Subject: Re: IN> Re: A Fan's Concern: Cover Art At 10:58 AM -0800 2/28/00, Matthew W. wrote: > >b) The concept for the Superiors II cover was fine, it covered it >completely, with the exception of Kobal. I thought the quality of SupII was extraordinary. I rather selfishly hope the same artist does the artwork for SupIV. What is it you find so poor about the execution of the artwork? Is it thematic? Anatomical? Perspective errors? Or do you simply not care for the artistic style? I ask because I simply don't see *anything* that suggests poor quality about the art. If you choose to allow characteristics to be bought during chargen, they cost 3 points per char point. It is strongly recommended that you DON'T allow Forces to be purchased, but if you do, they cost 10 apiece and do NOT increase the total number of points that can be spent. We've come up with a house rule about doing characteristics in my game that I think works quite well. First of all, no additional Forces or characteristics may be purchased upon character creation. Also, only Superiors may raise Forces. As XP is earned players may invest 3 points to raise a certain characteristic. Only 3 characteristics (9 points) may be raised per Force. The final point of Experience raises the not only the desired characteristic of that Force, but the Force itself. However, the final point may only be spent when the superior is there to 'raise the force'. Example: Izan, Ofanite of Wind has 3 Corporeal Forces, Strength 4, Agility 8. During play he spends 3 XP to raise Strength to 5. Later, he spends 3 more XP to raise Strength to 6. Again, he spends 3 addtional XP to raise Agility to 9. When it comes time to raise an additional Corporeal attribute he must contact his superior to beg for anther Corporeal Force. Should Janus say 'okay' and give the Wheel a Corporeal Force, the player spends 1 experience point to raise Strength to 7. This method compensates for the 10 point XP expenditure for a Force, and gives the character a reasonable amount of growth, rather than an immediate jump in power. This is just a house rule, it works well for us, but your style of game playing may vary. - -Erich S. Oh, The Final Trumpet *rocked.* I have no argument there. I don't mean to say SupII is my favorite cover of all time. I *did* like it quite a bit better than SupI, but that's all personal preference. Looking at it now, I like the vanishing points and the way Andre lies across them. It gives the room depth and the figure strength, and makes the perspective trick of flat screen with 3D arm work as well as could be expected. The "simple" trick would be to make Nybbas have depth as well, then suggest a television around him. Instead, the "flat to rounded" look works. And I'm babbling, so I'll stop now. - -- Eric Alfred Burns It was then I felt my heart break like a in-sabre@annotations.com fragile Scooby Snack upon the harsh teeth of http://www.annotations.com Reality -- and it's been broken ever since. http://www.annotations.com/~journal --Johnny Bravo ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2000 13:54:13 -0000 From: "Laurent" Subject: IN> Looking for names? I know there are programs to generate random names, but you can't always bring your computer with you during a role playing game. So I wrote 3 lists of common names (english) in HTML format: male first names, female first names and last names. IMHO, it is more convenient to have a table printed on a sheet of paper somewhere in your folder. You can bring it anywhere with you. I'm not sure wether or not attaching the 3 files to this message would cause Plain Text/Rich Text conflicts, so I'm asking for permission to post an HTML document on the list. If not granted, you can email me at cossonl@logica.com to get a copy of these files.
