Mariel could have defended herself against Haagenti's attack. Instead, she chose to let him devour her... because she wanted to experience (?) non-existence, to merge with her Word. For a while. But now she's coming back. There was always a backup plan in place, and it's just been activated. Plot seed: One of Mariel's former Servitors is quietly leading the effort to resurrect her. The details aren't known, but the conspiracy will require at least two items to proceed: the Finger of Oblivion (from the book of Relics, the last surviving piece of Mariel, Haagenti's table scrap) and the Ethereal Horror called L'Mellner (from the book of Servitors, the ugly dream-eating thing from the Marches). GMs can add other requirements to taste, of course. Several of Mariel's other ex-Servitors are involved; the rumors of a continuing association among ex-Oblvionists turn out to have a grain of truth. And at least one Prince (probably Malphas) is aware of the conspiracy and quietly supports it, though without going out of his way; either he believes the revived Princess will be a useful ally, or he simply wants to upset Hell's applecart. Reviving a lost Superior! It's never been attempted before, but if it comes off, the potential consequences are... large. If it can be done for one, why not others? But not everyone is going to favor this. Most of the Princes didn't like Mariel to begin with, and most won't care to see Hell's balance upset. The status-quo Superiors in particular won't like to see a hardcore fanatic confrontationalist put back on the board. And Haagenti, of course, will be VERY unhappy... much of his prestige and power comes from being the only Prince to have killed two Superiors. If he gets wind of this, he'll be at his _least_ amusing. Most of the Archangels won't like this one bit either, of course... though there might be a couple of exceptions. Michael won't mind having an honorably (if mad) opponent brought back for a rematch; Jean might be fascinated by the technical challenges involved. And Novalis likes to see _everyone_ have a second chance.... PCs could get involved in the "scavenger hunt", the effort to find the Finger and capture L'Mellner (alive!) and bring it back to Hell... either helping or hindering. Over time (say, a couple of sessions), they should gradually figure out what's going on, and decide whether to assist or not. If Mariel is brought back, she might be inclined to confer vast rewards on those who helped her come back... though relying on the gratitude of a Demon Prince is usually not a great idea. Freakish plot twist: Jean, or perhaps Yves, has determined that it might be possible to revive Mariel _in her original form_ -- that is, as the Elohite Angel of Memory, without the memories of her subsequent Fall. The trick here is to spike the mix with some powerful remnant of the pre-Fall Mariel. Any such remnant would be found in the Library, though... and the Library has strong feelings on the subject of Mariel, who was once its patron and then tried to destroy it. Anglic PCs can try to join the demons and help them, while waiting for the right moment to sabotage things. If the PCs are demons, they can try to figure out _why_ the angels are being so helpful... Figured I'd post it here in the hopes that other folks could use it... Jesus Crashed My Kegger! The Son of God has returned, and he likes to party. Steve Gardener, a sophomore at UCLA, says that Jesus Christ crashed the keg party he threw last Saturday for the members of his Fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha. “At first I thought he was a guest of one of the brothers,” said Mr. Gardener. “But nobody there knew who he was. He was real popular, though. The girls loved him, they were all dancing with him or laughing at his jokes or basically finding excuses to hang out with him. Some of the brothers got real mad at this, since he was taking their dates. Big Theo, he’s a Defensive End, and he was gonna throw down on him, you know? But he just gave us this look and smiled, and suddenly we were all cool.” But he knew his guest was more than pleasant company when they ran out of refreshments later in the evening. “Yeah, we’d been partying pretty hard, and we blew through that keg in nothing flat,” Mr. Gardener noted. “We were all bummed because we still had a lot of party in us, and a party without beer isn’t a party. But this guy, he just stood up, and smiled again, and said he’d take care of it. So he goes into the kitchen, and we hear the faucet running. Then he comes out with a handful of steins. We all thought he was joking, but they sure looked like they had beer in them when he set them down. None of us wanted to try it, so he picked one up, and chugged that sucker down! Then he cut loose with the biggest, fullest, most beer-smelling belch we’d ever seen. So we all took a drink.” “It was beautiful, man! We’d been getting tanked on cheap Milwaukee brew all night, but this was definitely the best beer we’d ever drunk! Better than Heineken or Michelob or any of that crap. The best part was we didn’t have a hangover when we woke up in the morning!” The miracles didn’t end there, however. “Later on we were running low on chips and pretzels and stuff like that, but no one wanted to make a munchie run. But this guy, he just laughs and says it’s no problem. He has me get the biggest bowl I can find, and he starts emptying bags into it. We didn’t think there was anything in there but crumbs, but they turned out to be, like, half full! And the chips weren’t broken, either. We ate that stuff all night long. Killer party mix.” The actions of the uninvited man are strikingly similar to the miracles performed by Jesus: the turning of water into wine at the wedding in Cana, and the feeding of the 5,000 on the shores of Galilee. But what does Mr. Gardener think? “I think he was the coolest guy I’ve ever met. All my life, I thought Christianity was for uptight Republicans who didn’t know how to have fun. But seeing Jesus at my party.... man, it changed my life! Like, now I know that Jesus is a real guy, and he understand us. That’s so cool! I get the whole dying on the cross thing, too. It’s sorta like having a designated driver: someone’s gotta make that sacrifice so that others can enjoy themselves, and you’re more likely to do that kinda thing for your buds than just some stranger. So Jesus, he came to live with us so that we’d all be his buds.” “Besides, it’s also real cool to know that God likes parties. Sorta gives me an idea of what Heaven’ll be like. Hey Jesus, next time you’re in town, give me a call, man! You can crash my party any time you want! — Reported by David Hawkins; photos by Sarah Barstow - -- Eric "Casca" Bertish (ericasca@hotmail.com) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2000 12:09:42 -0600 From: Tim Groth Subject: Re: IN> Tabloid Adventure Seed Hmm, sounds like Eli's hasn't been keeping that much of a low profile. Out of Print might mean there'll be an In Nomine second edition (be still, my heart!) that many have clamoured for. Yes, a reprint (but not, unfortunately, a second edition) is in the works; errata *will* be incorporated (as is the usual SJGames policy on reprints), and I believe the "restricted" notations will be added to Choir/Band Attunements where necessary. A couple of other minor changes that arose during GURPS IN's writing are also being included, I think -- a rewrite of the Vassal of Fire distinction which clarifies the actual effect, and some slight changes to Gabriel's Master distinction which make it read as more fire-oriented (as opposed to light-oriented, which was really more appropriate to Lucifer's Word, pre-Fall). And, no, I don't know why a reprint rather than a new edition, though I can think of a number of reasons. - ---Walter ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2000 17:23:46 -0400 From: Walter Milliken Subject: Re: Corporeal Song of Shields (was Re: IN> The look and feel ofthe Ofanite, with a good backbeat...) There is a classic (read, 60's) plot arc (yes, a plot arc in a 60's comic book) of the Legion of Super Heroes where Our Heroes are caught terribly short handed when a Sun Eater is seen by astronomers approaching Earth. They see its approach by stars going out, one by one. This, by the way, is *exactly* the same as the tabloid article from the WWN referenced at the beginning of this thread. The Legion is forced to recruit the most powerful villains in the galaxy (inadvertantly forming them into a team of their own -- the Fatal Five) to combat the menace. Even Superboy didn't begin to be enough to stop the creature, however. Finally, they built a bomb that would destroy the monster by absorbing all its energy in its second stage, the first stage blowing it apart. But "there was no time to build a propulsion device." Finally, the Legionnaire Ferro Lad carried the bomb by hand into the Sun Eater, and detonated it himself, dying but destroying the Sun Eater and saving the Earth (and ultimately the galaxy). Further, he did it so Superboy wouldn't, because Superboy had a Destiny (sic) to become Superman. I think it's safe to say Ferro Lad had a Destiny fulfilled. I also think it's safe to say that I'm a big ol' geek with a sponge memory. - -- Eric Alfred Burns It was then I felt my heart break like a in-sabre@annotations.com fragile Scooby Snack upon the harsh teeth of http://www.annotations.com Reality -- and it's been broken ever since. http://www.annotations.com/~journal --Johnny Bravo ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Apr 2000 00:35:23 -0400 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: Re: IN> Core Book out of print?
