I saw a news report about how the British Home Office plans to introduce a new computerized system next year to help judges decide what sentences they should give to convicted criminals. The system tries to determine how likely it is that the criminal will commit more crimes, based on criminal's personal data, including how employable he's likely to be in the future, what sort of friends and family he has, and whether or not he expresses any remorse for his crime. Would Dominic think: (A) This is a good thing because human judges need all the help they can get to judge properly? (B) This is a bad thing because if humans become dependant on machines to make their judgements, their capacity to judge things for themselves is likely to atrophy? (C) If even computers begin to develop a capacity for Judgement, maybe someday Vapula will to? Vapula's reaction, on the other hand, would no doubt just be pleased by another example of the inexorable advance of Technology. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 11:20:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Maurice Lane Subject: IN> Jeepers, this is humiliating... He was created shortly after the Eden incident and was a completely normal reliever until drafted by Janus (in about 2500 BCE) to receive the experimental Deep Cover attunement. He has been in active duty since. He is outwardly an archetypal Reliever of Janus, full of boundless energy, bright eyed and bushy tailed at all hours. He more than four millenia old, however, and is possessed of a certain degree of, if not wisdom than at least common sense and worldly lore. The younger Zephyrs (that is to say, all of them) know him as something of a mentor. He's not as fond of pranks these days as he was even five hundred years ago. He has taken hundreds of identities over the years, and possesses an often bewildering array of background knowledge. Raziel has three celestial children. His oldest is the Malakite Angel of Tornados, a Master of Motion and Raziel's pride and joy. His second (a Mercurian of Janus) was killed in 1006 CE during the disturbance surrounding Legion. His youngest (another Mercurian, and a mere three hundred years old) served Eli (the other "mother"'s superior) until the 50's when she transferred back to Janus' service. In fact, I'd like to ask you some leading questions, questions that most people who might be interested will want the answers to. So please, answer on the list.... What kind of PCs are you looking for? Angels, demons, or both? Experienced, inexperienced, or neither? Do you have a preference for or against certain Superiors? (I, for example, don't care for ethereal adventures, and tell my players that they'll probably get bored if they serve Blandine in my games.) Your campaign: High contrast or low? Your campaign: Cinematic or more realistic? How many players do you want? When do people have to have their submissions in? Is it first come, first served, or will you look 'em over and decide? When's the game start? (That covers all the info that anyone would need to decide if they wanted to get involved or not... just trying to help.) - -- Rev. He may gift someone else with this ability for 24 hours by spending 3 Essence. This ability is also available as a Servitor Attunement. Special Rites: : Brew a batch of beer and give it away to a group of adults. : Act as a designated driver. : Persuade a person to not use beer or any other alcohol as an excuse for inappropriate or self-destructive behavior. "As long as we Christians have our beer, there's nothing to fear." - old prayer Abvriel has been watching over beer and brewers since the Sumerians first came up with the idea. He has always been one of Eli's favorite Word-Bound Servitors, both for his charge and for his personality (Abvriel is jovial, methodical and endlessly patient), so his position in Creation's hierarchy was always secure, even when earthly events have temporarily dampened his Word. Dominic managed to grab hold of Abvriel during the Great Creationer Reorganization of 1957: whether it was because he wanted this Word under reliable control (in other words, Dominic's), or whether it was simply because the old Latin recipe "in vino veritas" lists beer as a substitute ingredient, is unknown. Either way, it hasn't worked out that well. Abvriel is about the most recalcitrant Servitor Dominic controls, and the only reason that the Angel of Beer hasn't formally left the Archangel of Judgement's service is because neither wants to deal with the inevitable political fallout. Both find it convenient to ignore each other as much as possible: Dominic's weekly visits are over amazingly quickly. Unlike most Creationers, Abvriel wants Dominic to try Eli: after God intervenes on Eli's behalf (well, He did for Michael, and Michael was infinitely guiltier than Eli, right?), Abvriel can get out of this tangle and go serve a Superior that can appreciate a cold one now and again. Until then, he tries his best to serve his Word without Judgement's interference (which isn't too onerous, really: most Triads find that a little politeness works wonders in getting Abvriel's assistance). It should be noted that Abvriel's Word is "Beer", not "Intoxication" or "Partying". Beer was first invented to provide a safe alternative to water (before modern germ theory, many countries and cultures had no real idea how to safely decontaminate the local water supply), and Abvriel emphasized this aspect of his Word for most of his career. Now that the modern age understands purification techniques, Abvriel instead promotes using beer, in moderation, as a chemical and cultural method of relaxation, not to mention brewing as a legitimate hobby and profession. He does not encourage drunkenness or alcoholism: like most Creationers, Abvriel believes that over-indulgence in anything is insulting to God and His works. Incidentally, there is a Demon of Beer. Actually, there have been several: every Prince of Drugs has sponsored that Word. They never last very long: Abvriel makes it a point to rip apart potential sources of Word-friction as quickly as they arise. One demonstration is usually enough per Prince. Haagenti might be able to better protect the demonic Word of Beer, but he finds it more profitable to "reluctantly" transfer the rights to such a potent Word (in return for concessions elsewhere, naturally) to each new Prince of Drugs. Fleurity is one of the few stubborn enough to try again: his latest Demon of Beer is a 16 Force Calabite bruiser named Grikplim who, nonetheless, is not expected to last out the year. Abvriel is a nasty, experienced fighter who protects his Word with all the zeal one would expect from an ancient Cherub, and no parvenu is going to just waltz in and interfere with his operation. *Yes, 15. I'm trying to imagine a world without beer, ever, and it would be completely different (NTM much less healthy, and a good bit grimmer). Pare down to taste, of course. :) ===== In Nomine stuff: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Everything else (not that there is, right now): http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/main.html Last updated 8/7/00 (this is a guess) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
