The Metatron is a figure that is spoke usually only of in reverent tones by the Angelic Host of Heaven with those who might remember him getting a awed and shaken look on their face when recalling him. His name is almost never brought up in Hell save in the boasting of taverns as to why Lucifer is the most powerful entity in the universe but any Pre-Fall born Prince and more than a few elder demons react to such statements with a mix of quiet anger and ruthless retribution. The Metatron's name is not to be taken lightly in the Symphony for it is feared to still has power and none among the Darkness wish to bring up the name's memories and few in Heaven wish to blasphem his figure by speaking in a common manner of him. The Metatron's actual creation time is unknown but most believe the being to have spoken the Words "Let there be Light" and thus brought forth the universe. There is some quiet scholarly debate in the Halls of the Library and Archives about whether Yves, Michael, Lucifer, and Baal actually existed before the Metatron and his spoken words or whether they dwelled in chaos and darkness for God knows how many years until the universe was created. No one yet has developed the desire or courage to try to broach the question with any of the ancients over such a trivial matter. In the end the truth likely matters less than that he existed and he existed before many, serving as the Mouthpiece of the Lord thy God over all Creation to bring forth unto reality the Will and Work of God. It is known indeed that once the building of the Heavens and the physical realm began in earnest the figure was in constant contact with the Archangels of the Host and many of the lesser angels who embodied either words or served as their Archangel's servants. No one ever truly *SAW* the Metatron in one of the more endearing mysteries of Heaven but only felt his presence and heard in every fiber of their being the awesome portenteous words that conveyed mysteries in ways that most Seraphim only wish the Heavengly tongue could replicate through them. He often came without warning but he and his servants had an uncanny sense of when a angel in Heaven were having a crisis of faith or momments of despair. Such things were not as uncommon in Pre-fall Heaven as one might imagine for the Creation of the universe was a daunting task and many Angels if not all felt themselves at some point or another unworthy of the task set before them and upon them. A time with the Metatron or his servitors was usually enough to dispell the doubts of any and the Metatron never turned away those who needed his comfort. The Metatron was awe inspiring, holy, and never spoke anything but the truth of God as far as any could tell and thus most believed him to be a Seraph despite his invisibility, achieving a union with God most angels could only dream about. Other angels have their own fancies about the Metatron including that he was a union of all choirs or something different like Yves but with his destruction, disbelieved by some who hold fast to his memory, it is likely a mystery that must wait til the aftermath of Armageddon to solve. The Metatron's counseling was also mixed also with other duties which all the Archangels of Heaven that remember the Fall and most Elder Demon Princes remember well. The first of these other duties was the Metatron's missions, it was if not expected it was politely ignored that the Metatron could pull any servitor of any Superior away from his duties in order to have him pursue some mission in the universe or Heavens which the Metatron may or may not deem to inform his Superior about later. It is believed that such things as Jordi creating vessels, Saminga witnessing the destruction of the dinosaurs, and Lucifer descending to the Earth with Jean to bring humanity fire might have some trace of the Metatron's hand inside it. Another duty of the Metatron was far more important to the Celestial Host and one which is still missed by the Seraphim Council for it was the Metatron's place to dictate God's awarding to words to Angels who deserved them. One would either feel his presence and here the announcement that one had been selected for the honor or one could petition the Word of God to make the transformation. The Metatron's judgements were final and irrecoverable and no angel could argue with a decision of God that the Metatron dictated. Merely accept. The Metatron's downfall came with the decision that humanity would be left alone by celestial intervention. While it Yves who dictated God's will in the matter the Metatron fully endorsed the decision and did his best to make sure every celestial in Heaven accepted it in their hearts. In this he was less than sucessful. Try to understand that while every angel in Heaven was bound to God's service and their words in very intimate and enjoyable ways the Earth had been a prodject many had been working on for at the very least centuries for many more millions of years and in some cases billions of years. To suddenly be cut off from the vast prodject and cede a still untutored and newborn humanity the prodject immortals had a great deal of their very EXISTANCE tied up in was not only painful but to many it was completely insane. Lucifer the Archangel of Light was particularly hard struck as he believed with all his heart and soul that it was a supremely BAD idea and argued fully against it with the Metatron in the guise of counselling to accept God's decision. It is believed Lucifer, Baal, and Ophis were working even then to overturn God's decrees and Ophis's tainting of the Eden experiment, the Metatron's ordered attempt to teach angels about humanity, made the Archangel of the Word lose considerable face and trust in his wisdom throughout the host. Finally on a particularly portenteous day Lucifer came one last time to the Metatron's cathedral to argue with him about humanity, his wisdom, the nature of God, who knows. The contents of that discussion are lost to history and any among the Metatron or Lucifer's servants who might know the truth of the contents of the conversation are either not talking or destroyed in the Fall. All that is known is that the Metatron's attempts at convincing Lucifer of his position failed and only incited the Morningstar further to the point that the Lightbringer attacked the Voice of God somehow and succeeded in scattering his forces to the wind. The crime was so abominable, so unexpected, and so shocking that Lucifer was given more than enough time to gather his followers together for the War in Heaven when he might have been destroyed early on and the War not yet consume so many angelic lives unused to battle. The death of the Metatron actually caused many of Heaven's would be warriors to despair and either Fall or stand idly due to the mind numbing shock of being deprived the Voice of God. Some suggest even to this day that the Seraphim Council is a poor substitute for the Voice and it is certain his loss is still regarded as one of Lucifer's greatest triumphs. Former Servitors of the Metatron The Metatron never particularly had many servitors as the supervisory roll that they played in Heaven was always less taxing than the mammoth tasks that were often levied on the servitors of Eli, David, Gabriel, Lucifer and others to bring the universe under full control. Still argueably the Metatron couldn't be everywhere and recruited or created a small number of angels to serve as carriers of his will and handlers of lesser angel's problems. Thus the servitors of the Metatron tended to be old, individualistic, and wise. When the Fall came a number actually did Fall due to the horror of their Superior's death and a number actually took it to be God's will that Lucifer triumph, Camael the first Habbalah is indeed believed to have been one of the Metatron's former servitors. A larger number indeed were destroyed during the Fall or after as vented anger against the Superior who had dictated God's will was vented upon those who had served him. Most remaining servitors of the Metatron took eventually to Yves, Uriel, Gabriel, Raphael, and a rare few to Dominic's service. Noted members PCs might yet encounter and all which are now upon the Seraphim Council include Urriah the Olfanim Angel of Guidence in the service of Gabriel who led the Hebrews as a burning pillar to the Red Sea on their flight from Egypt, Jael the Seraph Angel of Covenants who watched over Abraham now in the service of Faith, and Requel the Mercurian Angel of Counsel who is now in the service of Yves. Metatron Theories and Rumors As odd as it may sound the unbelievable theory that the Metatron was not destroyed may actually have some basis in reality as God's decrees have still managed to whittle their way down to the Heavengly Host on occasion despite his abscence. God's voice indeed has pardoned Michael, recalled Uriel to the Higher Realms, and shown through Miracle that the new Commander of the Host was to be Laurence. Whether this implies the Metatron is still alive or some other fancy of the Seraphim Council is a subject of much more common discussion among the conspiratial, apcolyptical, or simply gossipy members of the Heavengly Host. Other conspiracy theories about the Metatron include that a remenant of his still exists on the Earth which is extremely unlikely given that such things were banned at the time, that he passed along his gift of God's word to the Archangel Gabriel and/or Yves just before he died, that the Metatron is recovering in Uriel and later Laurence's cathedral and slowly being fed forces until he is at full strength again, that Lucifer suceeded in winning the Metatron over to his side and thus he became the Demon Prince Kronos, that Lucifer keeps the Metatron imprisoned in the Lower Hells and that is the sole reason he can grant words and a number of other horrofic/odd/hopeful stories. Given the mysterious nature of this figure it is quite likely the conspiracy theories will abound about him for many more milleniuia to come. The Metatron's Cathedral The Metatron's cathedral is one of the few Cathedrals that was not abandoned with the destruction of it's Superior and indeed remains one of the most active and visited places in Heaven. The Metatron's Cathedral is actually the Halls of Worship in Heaven in which all Superiors before humanity came to pray and give communion to God. The spot in which the Metatron was slain is one of the few rooms not visited in the Halls as while it has since been cleaned and the subjectivity renders much of the original form unseeable the place holds a faint trace of omniousness and powerful feeling that is too much for most causal mortals seeking wisdom to bear to stand in the presence of. Automatically all choirs recieve the Seraphim dissonance condition for lying and Seraphim themselves take DOUBLE the normal ammount for violating the truth of God's symphony with lies. The typical servitor of the Metatron attempts to make his every word and verse an important work towards the furthering of wisdom and dislike anything which detract from such. Choir Attunements The Metatron's servitors may not have their master's connection to the Lord God but they do have the Metatron himself and thus their attunements mainly reflect the enforcement of God's will and truth upon the world and Heavengly society. They're attunments make them excellent philosophers, teachers, mystics, and counsellers both in such roles that God's will thrusts them into. Seraphim Seraphim of the Metatron have the ability not only to hear the truth in a person's words but also they are able to gauge the truth in comparison thus knowing while both subjects are telling the truth about a subject which is giving a more accurately truthful view. This ability allows them a great deal of judgementive power regarding beliefs and a unnatural ability to slice away to the heart of any subject being discussed. The Seraphim in the Voice's service are commanders and holy men of the highest order in Heaven with their respect matched only by their ability to awe. Bright Lilim There were no Lilim in the time of the Metatron....or at least any in his service Grigori There were no Grigori in the time of the Metatron Cherubim Cherubim of the Metatron are given remarkable insight into the condition of their attunements whether animate or inanimate and know instinctively whatever is troubling them whenever in their presence. This may be financial trouble, slow erosian, a crisis of faith or a similar difficulty the Cherub will know what indeed is their largest concern right now. No firmer counsellers exist in all of Heaven as friends to their fellow angels and few better caretakers among the Cherubim. Ofanim The Voice of God's Ofanim served as the Metatron's messangers and quick runners to deal with problems troubling the world. They are instantly blessed with the ability to sense where they are needed most in God's work and while they have no idea exactly what they need to do given God's motives are rather inscrutable at times they still know exactly where the word is beckoning them always. Elohim Elohim with their resonance are instantly able to detect what emotions affect a person's faith in and submission to God's will and depending on the success of their roll what sort of actions might aid them in affecting it positively in addition to the usual information. Elohim of the Metatron serve as mediators between factions in Heaven primarily and impartial confession takers amongst them. Malakim There were no Malakim in the time of the Metatron Kyriotates The Dominations of the Metatron may manifest inside a person with complete submission to God's will and not add this to the number of forces they must possess to posess a being. Dominations of the Metatron were commanders and the agents of the Metatron against the routine crises on the Earth to the plan, often possessing angelic vessels to handle it. Usage of the attunement after the death of the Metatron without an angel's permisson is automatic grounds for trial by Judgement. Some superiors in modern nights, most notably Khalid, Laurence, and Novalis, also take a dim view of use of it indiscrimantly on the faithful. Mercurians Mercurians of the Metatron are naturally blessed with insight into God's will that many in Heaven are often in awe of. With a sucessful resonance check a Mercurian of the Voice of God can detect if a person's current vocation and belief structure is in line with God's plan for them and may be able to dictate a better profession if they are willing to listen. Servitor Attunements Insight This belief requires a number of hours of meditation, prayer, and deep comtemplation as the Angel has forces. At the end of the period the angel must spend three essence and make a perception check to recieve a divine revelation about his current situation and how best to deal with it in accordance to the Will of God. This ability was not tainted in the time of the Metatron but infernal interventions eventually caused false visions to be crafted during this meditation that caused the absolute worst possible action to be taken and high profile difficulties of such have tainted the attunement's use in modern times. Dictation The Metatron was unquestionably the Word of God and the Word of God was not to be denied in it's fufillment. An angel with this attunement can make a sucessful resisted will roll to command any angel or mortal to any action which could reasonably further God's will though personally dangerous actions must be consented to by the person in question and no dictation can ever change a person's personal feelings on a matter (that is Divine Logic). This ability like insight has come under a bit of fire since the Metatron's death and it is considered grounds for a trial of pride if used on a fellow angel without extremely good cause. Word bound may add their word forces to their wills to resist such a command and usually take extremely dim views of being commanded in such a way. The ability is commonly only now used to charge angels and mortals with quests that they would normally be very reluctant to pursue. Sense God's Notes Because God's Symphony had dictated the Metatron to be the "conductor" of the orchestra much as God was the writer of the Symphony this ability was a commonly granted one to senoir servitors to be able to look upon a being who had been awarded by God with a word and know exactly what it was and what he had done to do to get it with a sucessful resonance check. This ability also allows a Servitor of the Voice of God to sense servitors of a specific Superior and identify which among angels as they are revealed as "lesser notes" of the vastly powerful Archangels. Though the Metatron did not survive to see it the ability also senses to an extent the dischordant notes of the Symphony imprinted on by Lucifer and the ability can with a 6 on the roll sense diabolical word bound as well. Aura of Authority This ability was usually awarded only to the Metatron's most trusted disciples and servitors as it gave them a distinctly divine and powerful aura which immediately draws those who do not suceed in a resisted will roll to turn their attention towards the being radiating the aura and regard him as a figure of authority, power, and respect. Those who have a will lower than the Angel's Celestial forces fail automatically and the aura extends for three yard for every celestial force the person posseses. The power costs a single point of essence to use and lasts for for the duration of the scene. Distinctions No Distinctions yet existed in Heaven and the Metatron regarded each of his angels more or less equally save for a minor preference for the experienced which he rewaded with attunements and more difficult jobs. Relations The Metatron as the Voice of God was in some ways the defacto leader of the Heavengly Host as granter of words and sayer of the Holiest of Holies's will. He was universally respected or at least feared by the Archangels under his gaurdianship and numerous ones had a distinctly intimate relationship with him and did all they could to make his proclamations as swiftly done as possible. Unfortunately as time passed the Lightbringer eventually drifted from allied to associated to outright Hostile as time passed, a heartbreaking thing as the Morningstar was once closest to the Metatron's heart. Allied: Gabriel, Yves, Lucifer, Eli, Uriel, Michael Associated: All others Hostile: No One (Lucifer was hostile to him) Basic Rites * Follow a command of God and fufill it's letter and spirit (+3 essence) * Convince an angel of God's infalliability and perfection of purpose Chance of Invocation: 5 The Metatron's purpose is distinctly to aid the forces of Heaven and the ability to summon him is fairly common that he is known to appear to even those not serving him fairly regurarely. Moe Short version: somebody's stolen the statue of Lincoln - - and the chair that he's sitting in - from the Lincoln Memorial, and nobody can figure out why. David's whipped up a convincing mockup (actually, one of his Kyriotates of Stone, who's getting very bored now), but it really would be a good idea to get the statue back anyway. The PCs get to go look for it. Aside from a lot of disturbance, there isn't a clue in the world. Until reports start coming in of Poseidon holding court in the ocean... That's the short version. The slightly longer version is, well, David's the one who actually grabbed the statue in the first place. You see, it occurred to him that, come The Day, it would be really helpful (and somewhat amusing) if the very statues themselves could come to life and began to Smite unwary evildoers. However, to do this, he'd have to actually take a statue and experiment with it a bit before it could serve as a vessel. Early tests seemed promising, so he went ahead and grabbed a suitably humanoid figure, adapted it and assigned it to an Ofanite of Stone with David's Kyriotate Attunement. Unfortunately, something went really wrong in the final part of the process. Wrong enough that the Ofanite's Heart cracked, sending him Outcast and gifting him with a galloping case of Paranoia. Needless to say, the Ofanite ran away. Said Ofanite is currently cruising around underneath the ocean (that statue happens to be huge, remember?), and by now Abe's gotten a fairly decent crop of seaweed attached to himself. Really, the effect does look like the King of the Sea on his throne. It's a shame that there isn't an Archangel assigned to the oceans anymore (and David's going to push to rectify that little oversight as soon as possible): the PCs are simply going to have to learn how to swim for this one. They'll also have to figure out how to pacify, capture and retrieve a large stone statue without either damaging it or it's possessor. It'd also be a good idea if they kept their mouths firmly shut about any clever deductions that they might have made. Still, it could be worse. Moe Howard Drummond Corporeal Forces: 1 Strength: 2 Agility: 2 Ethereal Forces: 3 Intelligence: 6 Precision: 6 Celestial Forces: 1 Will: 2 Perception: 2 Charisma +1 Skills: Artistry/6 (writing), Emote/3, Knowledge (Roman customs/6, Research/3), Languages (Latin/3, Greek/2) Professor Drummond is your stereotypical academic: very smart, very focussed on his own interests, and not particularly interested in much outside of them. In this case, his interests begin and end with the ancient Romans. However, the Professor is a little worried about modern life, and the way it seems to ignore the past and its lessons. Especially troubling to him is that nobody seems to have any continuity anymore: for example, for a culture that has such a definite interest in death, Western society seems bound and determined to discard everybody that actually has experienced that state permanently. The ancient Romans were wiser: they would have holidays where the dead were honored, respected, and most importantly, remembered. If modern man spent less time obsessing over the mechanisms of death and more time trying to get a perspective on its meaning, people would probably be happier. They'd certainly be able to handle their own eventual demises better. All of this wouldn't be important, of course, if it weren't for the fact that Professor Drummond happens to be a good public speaker and a better writer. His book on the subject hit the nonfiction best seller lists immediately, not to mention solid critical and academic acclaim (something not seen every day), and his suggestion of a national day of contemplation seems to have stricken a chord with the public. Being a Roman scholar, naturally he picked the Festival of Faunus as a suitable date - and that's where the trouble started. Celestials are suspicious entities. Professor Drummond practically screams "secret Pagan Soldier" to even the mildly paranoid. He's not (actually, Howard is a practicing Lutheran): the man has never heard about the War, doesn't really believe in angels or demons, and has no potential for a sixth Force. He is firmly and simply just a normal academic with no aptitude and less interest in the supernatural. Try telling that, though, to the ethereals, pagan Soldiers, Sorcerers and various Servitors who have begun to go over his life with a fine tooth comb. The more they vainly look for hidden affiliations, the more they persist in their delusion that the professor is a secret agent for someone. At the moment, the general consensus is that he's personally working for either a Superior or a major ethereal god: that, and the fact that everybody has a different agenda, has kept him fairly safe. Of course, that's no guarantee that such a standoff is going to be permanent. This is something that has lead me to go "Hmmmmmm" upon looking it over because of such creations as the Sun and other things of monumental Celestial achievement. *WHY* exactly have Superiors gotton so much weaker when they made this universe, I have some theories but I'd like some feedback A:) The Gradual Decline of Words Celestials are not meant to exist eternally like Humanity, best for a Heaven is Bad campaign, and God in his infinite love for the monkeys created a disposable Heavengly Host that is meant to decline with humanity's need for them and words. A celestial not so bound is much less expendable to the little slave market he's set up for the human race. Now that David's work creating the Earth is done he's had to expand to include loyalty so he won't sink back into the base forces God wants him to eventually do so, same for Gabriel (wrath), and others. God sustained a word's power before the Fall and now they must depend on humanity for the meager essence they need to live....hmmm rather like Ethereals which leads me to... B:) Archangels didn't create the universe They really are just trumped up Ethereals and the fact they did these monumental tasks is just a sign that dear old Yawhew is very fond of his creative writing skills. C:) Higher Heaven's Empowerment God before humanity arrived and the Fall empowered words that he bestowed in order to allow Archangels proper ammounts of time to train for usage of their word. Basically Valor didn't exist much in the time before War and while conflict was probably a big thing once Heaven and the Earth got started with animals and debates and stuff it wans't too much doing 13 billion years ago. Thus God kept the words going until the day he ceded them to humanity for whatever reasn. Thus a Archangel also had much vaster limits of power. D:) Entropy occurs in a fixed system The Big explosian of essence that occured at the Big Bang gave everybody a real big boost of essence that they could use as much of for as long as they wanted it seemed but now that 15 or so billion years have passed the essence flow is kinduv flowing down and the Archangels and Demon Princes are having to scrounge their essence suckers/generators (depends on how you view humanity) in order to survive. E:) The Superiors then were no more powerful or weaker then Basically it's the fact David worked for 15 billion or so years STRAIGHT gathering all his forces and essence and attunement study that allowed him his massive creation. Same with Gabriel and the rest, plus the fact that they weren't constantly battle demon princes also gave them time to stock up. Truth be told I expected him to react poorly to the decision that angelic interference was now forbidden but like all great artists, I believe he is willing to look upon his work with a smile and is thinking up new ones as we speak. A strong force for Order, Justice, his anger and his ability to forget it is legendary even in Heaven. The great master of water should mind well his pride however for his servants find his arrogance and gloating more than a bit insufferable. Still he is faithful, true, and a great lover of the life God has given him. "Tidal waves, Whirlpools, the great thunderstorms I wove with Jean and Janus! These are the things I love and rejoice in as the architecture of noble Metatron and the Lord our God. Let no angel or this still budding man believe he is anything but the nobliest and holiest among us! Those who dare I challenge on the spot!" Raphael: The first Elohim is the height of Logic for while she/he does not feel any less and feels perhaps more passionately than all the Host of Heaven combined she/he sees clearly the course of action must be thought without the tide of the momment guiding one but the firm hand of knowledge and foresight. God's will is far easier because of her presence. Saminga: The gentle scared Kyriorite is traumatized by what he has witnessed and developed a morbid curiousity I have noted about the bodies of animals and how they die. I believe his witnessing the sudden extinction of so many has made him withdrawn and introverted. I do not believe it's healthy. "Death is such a large part of life. Why does it exist? What is causes it? How can we avoid it? Should we? I lean towards the latter for life seems so...pale in comparison to that momment. I will continue my studies at the Cathedral of Light, perhaps there among the teachers and philosophers I can gain the insight the many books of the library do not give." Uriel: The Seraph of Purity is my firmest ally in spreading the truth of God's word though he has never been as "imaginative" as Lucifer in exploring it he has been much more firmer in his patience in gaurding what he and I both know to be true.
