Having more Stuff around also makes it *easier* for new people to jump in, because you need those one or two hooks that make their muse drop a rock on their head. So I wouldn't worry about it--you'll be fine if you just make it clear that there isn't any obligation (if inspiration strikes, great. If not, there's next time). Iron Superiors would be really cool, but /only/ if the ingrediants weren't completely silly. With silly ingredients, you would get a nonsensical Superior, because unlike with a plot seed, you can't easily work (say) marbles, the Song of Light and teen suicide into a *good* character concept. Perhaps if you gave seven reasonably serious ingredients and let people /choose/ three of them, it would give better Superiors... And people will enter if they have time, or not if they don't. Hey, all. I'm probably too late to enter honestly, but I don't care. I like this adventure idea. Iron Ref - Scavenger Hunt: An adventure for a "nice" demonic party. Intended Tone: Comedy! Background: It is well known that actually surviving long enough to meet an Archangel to ask to be redeemed can be extremely difficult. However, it has long been a rumor that Kobal arranges for easy shots at Redemption for choice Demons . . . All PCs are expected to be demonic PCs willing to enter into the contest and therefore wish to redeem. The Game Master should delve into depth with each PC the reasons he wishes to redeem. This is meant to be the emotional drive of the character to complete the mission. Each receives a message (ala Celestial Tongues) from Kobal, the message reads: "meet to redeem at Bitter Irony Cineplex in Shal-Mari, bring your own beer" and the PC senses it is from "Kobal, Demon Prince of Dark Humor" Upon arriving at Bitter Irony Cineplex, if the character has brought a case of beer, then he is approached by Shedite dressed up as a Jester and led into the back. If he has not brought any beer at all, he will not be approached by said Shedite. If he asks anyone about Kobal's presence, he will be given strange looks or uselessly vague answers. If he asks the Shedite/Jester, then he will be asked if he brought any beer. Shedite: "When you got the beer, I'll take you to Kobal." (The quality of beer is unimportant.) When each PCs arrives with beer, he is guided to a darkened theatre, where the Shedite instructs him to wait. There are several large Djinn Clowns guarding the exits and entrances. They are not funny. Really. Very, very serious. Two Clown Dogs, one Clown Weasel, and one Clown Seal. All evil Djinn clowns. When all of the PCs have arrived, then the curtains pull back and a film begins to play. The film is of Kobal, sitting in a lawn chair, wearing a very fine robe and smoking from a pipe. "As you all know you have been contacted because you all share a similar interest, that is why I have contacted you. "Why the beer? you ask? A simple reason really. I needed to ensure that you were at least moderately capable of acquiring items, of hunting, one might say. "Taped beneath each of your seats is a piece of paper, and each list is the same. Upon that piece of paper is written a number of things. "As soon as one or more of you has aquired at least one of each of the items on the list, you will be able to summon me easily. The paper is an artifact designed for that purpose. When I have arrived and verify that you have all the items, I shall summon Eli myself, and he will offer you a shot at redemption. "If you so much as whisper the chief goal of your mission to anyone else, or if the list is seen by anyone else but those in this room, I will have my Captains hunt you down and have you brought to me. You don't want that to happen." Kobal grins a truly horrific grin, sending shivers through the PCs. "Feel free to compare your lists with one another, you will find that the list of items is the same for each of you. And I *do* expect you to work together. After all, this is a quest for redemption, and therefore a chance to prove your ability to move beyond your innate selfishness. "You will be allowed to move down to earth through the Tether in this Cineplex. You will have 24 earth hours in which to acquire all the items on the list. Also, upon arriving, you will find a substantial amount of money upon your vessel. You do not need to return to this Tether to summon me. Know that the lists will be unable to summon me after 24 hours have passed upon your arrival onto earth. The Scavenger Hunt does not begin until you arrive on Earth and items aquired before you arrive will not count towards the list. "Good luck." The List: * A dog with three legs. * A pinch of basil. * Four hundred pounds of Cheese. * A pyramid of Egyptian origin. * A Chinese Lantern (authentic). * An Hemerobius specimen from the British Isles (that's a kind of insect). * A Holy Artifact. * The celestial Heart of a Demon (not your own, not broken, not one of Dark Humor.) * The corporeal heart from that same Demon's vessel. GM notes regarding the Hunt: * The other end of the Tether is to an Italian Seaport. * When they arrive, each Demon should find five new credit cards in his wallet, and the wallet stuffed with a lot of cash from many different countries. * The demon whose Heart they locate should be moderately powerful. * Provide enough angelic threat to make it difficult to accomplish the tasks (for instance the cheese truck/train car they choose to highjack is being driven by an Ofanite of Trade). * The pyramid need not be particularly large. * The insect does exist in museum collections in England (probably with angels of Jordi in the country-side surrounding it, or an angel of Yves working in the museum) as well as in the wild. * Feel free to have the characters persued by a mindless malakite hoard once they steal the Holy Artifact (unless they cut a deal for one, and even still . . .) this will help to push them forward. * The group is likely to split up, which is fine. In fact, if the GM has planted an NPC to help guide the party (another Demon seeking redemption), he might suggest doing just that. * Feel free to have them have to complete tasks for angels who are willing to help them (I'll let you have this Holy Reliquary/1 if you go scare the Hell out of the local gang bothering this church.) And, if this sucks them into local poltics, so much the better. * the PCs should be reminded that travelling on earth takes a fair amount of time, even by air. The Ending: Once the PCs have collected all the items, they can summon Kobal. At this the point, the GM has many different options. Kobal might summon Eli, as he promised, and the PCs are allowed to redeem. On the other hand, Kobal might summon Asmodeus and hand them over for treason. Or, Yves might appear (as Eli was out) and offers them all a chance to redeem. Baal arrives and offers them a chance to join his ranks (as they have shown quite unusual team-work), or be destroyed. Or, whatever else you like. It's just an adventure. Alterations: This could also be run as an adversarial game, either where there is another PC group serving Asmodeus sent to round up and arrest the other PCs. This might work quite well as a PBEM. Instead of Kobal, it's ELI who sent the message and appears in the film. AND/OR whatever else the GM likes. :) Of course, the list can be altered to fit whatever the needs of the GM. anyway, that's it - -Perry, Kyriotate of Flowers serving Creation perrylloyd@hotmail.com pl312993@oak.cats.ohiou.edu http://www.geocities.com/llloyd.geo "As long as people will accept crap, it will be financially profitable to dispense it. I seldom agree with ChuckG, but I share his distaste for any game where the PCs can't win and can't break even. Once was enough to last me the rest of my life. I think what I'm feeling about the St. Athanasius seed is the fact that you're being unfair to the PCs because the *players* (not the characters) are making an understandable assumption -- not that there must be celestial influence over every religious organization, but that the *GM* must have something in mind because that's the premise of the game. I don't think that's metagaming; I think it's a fair assumption. You gather together Friday night with a bunch of books and assorted food; your characters are told to investigate a convent; well, then, there must be something there, and if you don't find it the first time you must have missed it, so look again and harder. I can see a party feeling somewhat misused if they spend the entire evening looking for something that isn't there while the GM snickers behind his hands. Or is it just me? It might seem obvious to *you* but then >you have the answers, besides--why should we trust your clues--you're out >to get us. What this tells them is that investigation is a waste of >time and not very fun. Now this is a legitimate complaint and one I regularly have with some of my GMs. I personally love finding things out and following clues and patterns. Background research is my characters' middle name. But many GMs stomp on this kind of initiative, either because they don't like it themselves, aren't prepared for it, or think it slows down the action and want to get to the fighting. >Similarly, if you continue to have the >players ambushed, taken hostage and bad things happen to them and their >friend or wards, they are probably not going to be a little trigger happy. This is also true. Our Shadowrun game is run on the style of "Mission: Impossible," where the team sneaks in and removes everything valuable, including the guard's gold teeth and silk underwear, and sneaks out again, and the guard doesn't even notice anything has happened until he goes to the bathroom and notices his underwear is missing. Other Shadowrun games are run in a fashion that would make World War Three sound quiet in comparison. It all depends on what kind of behavior is reinforced by the GM. He told us he would reinforce subtle, intelligent play and discourage blatant stupidity, with the result that when we get into a fight, unless it's one we planned and expected beforehand, we consider it's evidence that we've been incompetent somehow. Canon Laurence would probably figure it out in a bit (maybe after an adventure by the PCs -- nice hook, Michael), and would then promptly disregard future gifts. He'd *accept* them -- it'd be rude not to -- but not respond in any way. Given his opinion of Ethereals -- "figments" -- he'd probably ignore her rather in the way a human would ignore a virus inserted into his computer's OS which caused it to randomly declare that it loved him every now and then. (His opinion of lower angels who consort with Ethereals is probably tinged with notions of zoophilia....) It gets dark in a hurry if Laurence is even slightly more intolerant towards Ethereals. A cynic could see Athena's actions as a coldly-reasoned attempt to "sleep with the enemy" in hopes of a lighter treatment, or an attempt to distract him. This Laurence might respond to such an overture with a quick trip to the Marches, followed by a return to normal business, sans one Greek/Roman Ethereal. If the players are up for some serious orders-cause-soul-searching gaming, have him send them to do it. I can't see even a lighter Laurence as much more open towards an Ethereal's overtures, given his respect for Uriel. His opinion of other angels who choose to engage in relationships with Ethereals might be better, though. For Laurence to react positively to Athena's interest would, I think, represent a lightening of his attitude towards them and a brightening of the general setting. From there other developments could naturally follow - -- official efforts to recruit Ethereals away from Hell, support of Blandine's previous amnesty, and official corporeal missions for thoroughly-indoctrinated Ethereals. On the down side, other Archangels such as Dominic and David could frown on this activity, leading to fractures in Heaven's War Faction, so it's not all sweetness and light. And since Ethereals don't Fall, there are serious intelligence and counterintelligence problems with this whole line of activity. One problem with In Nomine is that each Choir and Band definitely requires a certain mindset, and certain players just aren't going to fit with certain types of celestials. This is not usually readily apparent, however. You get the gun-bunny who thinks that Malakim or Ofanim sound cool, or the Deep Roleplayer who thinks Cherubim or Mercurians would be ideal, and they simply don't foresee how that Choir's dissonance conditions (or sometimes their Superior) is going to interfere with their playing the character the way they envision it. This can be frustrating for both player and GM. It should be made very clear to new IN players that celestial dissonance conditions are going to put constraints on your roleplaying in ways you may not have experienced in other games, and you should think very carefully about what your character, whether it's a Seraph of Destiny or a Balseraph of Technology or whatever, is NOT going to be able to do. In fact, it would probably be a good idea to make a list of such constaints to show new players. E.g., "You want to be a Malakite of Fire with a Role as a police officer. OK, you realize that you are constantly going to be detecting cruelty that you MUST punish? You also realize that in your Role as a cop, you are going to run into evil individuals, some of whom will not be criminals, that you MUST kill? You realize that this means your cop ID is constantly going to be getting into trouble and possibly in danger of listing his badge?" Not to say that it can't be done, but if the player hasn't thought about how to work around it, he's going to be frustrated and pissed off when his character is being investigated by IAD and brought up on charges because the GM won't let him act like Dirty Harry. - -David ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 14:48:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Walton Subject: Re: IN> Iron Rev: Scavenger Hunt!!!! - --- Perry Lloyd wrote: > Iron Ref - Scavenger Hunt: An adventure for a "nice" > demonic party. However, what you really need is Soldier material, with the right kind of selfless personality, compatible with Dreams, and preferably a fan of the show. Well, after getting the bright idea to search conventions, they found one and moved her and her family to Japan. (Her dad's not a magazine editor, but we won't have a perfect correspondence with the manga anyway.) Blandine appeared to Serena in the Marches as Queen Serenity, explained the War, and proposed her plan. Serena thought it was fantastic -- she was moving to a great country, she got an angel in a cat body as a bodyguard and mentor, she was in personal contact with the most gorgeous, awe-inspiring being she'd ever known, met a great-looking guy with the same job, and had the opportunity to kick Evil butt in a major way. There is *nothing* bad about her life at this very minute. Except maybe schoolwork. ^_^; Tuxedo Mask Soldier of the Sword ST 10 DX 11 IQ 11 HT 13 Appearance: Young adult Caucasian male, blue eyes, short black hair, generally neatly dressed, tall, average build. Advantages: Attractive, Fashion Sense, Symphonic Awareness, Power Investiture (Corporeal) +1, Essence Control 6 Disadvantages: Partial amnesia(limitation: has only forgotten life before the age of 10), Struggling Wealth level(college student, part-time job), Code of Honor(strict adherence to orders; protect women and innocents, and those weaker than oneself; always give aid when requested; -5) Quirks: always carries a fresh rose when possible; loves Serena (Sailor Moon); likes to make a dramatic entrance Skills: Blades(Corporeal)-15, Cloak(Heavy)-12, Fencing-14, Knife Throwing-14, Jumping-10, Driving-11, Karate-11, Performance(Modeling)-10, Appreciate Beauty-12, Japanese-11 Equipment: Transformation rose (enhancement - produces 1d new fresh roses with each use, ready for any purpose -- additional 2 Essence storage capacity for more roses); Cane (summonable into hand; Relic: Song of Blades(Corporeal), 2 dedicated Essence storage; limitation: the cane only); All sundries of a college student in modern-day Japan, including apartment, car, and part-time job. Story: Laurence had to be apprised of such a large undertaking involving Soldiers, of course, and he seems to expect Darien to be the mature influence on the girls when their Mercurian mentors are having communication problems. It helps, of course, that Darien was being considered as Soldier material already, and shows the Sword's dedication to discipline and honor. The fact that Blandine chose him apparently for the likelihood of his falling in love with Serena, an event that has come about, troubles him very little. While Serena is nominally in charge (heavily advised by Luna and Artemis, of course, and the eponymous Ethereal goddess has been strenuously advised to keep her hands off), the two are otherwise falling into an acceptably honorable pattern of chivalric interest leading to a patiently-awaited heartfelt marriage. Sailor Mercury Soldier of Lightning ST 8 DX 8 IQ 15 HT 9 Appearance: Teenage Caucasian female, blue eyes, short blue hair Advantages: Attractive appearance, Symphonic Awareness, Power Investiture (Celestial, taken from an Elohite of Lightning) +1, Essence Control 6, Unusual Background (major favor being done by Jean for Blandine), Composed Disadvantages: Shyness (Severe), Minor(age 14) Quirks: dedicated student; swims to relax Skills: Ice (Celestial)-17, Shields(Celestial)-16, First Aid-18, Diagnosis-14, German-14, French-14, Japanese-15, Hobby(Swimming)-14, Mathematics-17, Physics-14, Computer Operation-16, Computer Programming-15 Equipment: The standard Elohite Attunement computer has been enhanced with a sensor array which is summonable at will once the computer is in existence. Assume any reasonably TL10 portable sensory equipment (mikes, infrared, electroscopes, etc.) is available -- after all, if Jean's going to do something as audacious as this, he might as well go the whole nine yards. Also, all sundries of a Caucasian teenager in modern Japan. Story: Jean was opposed to Blandine's request originally. Transplanting a Force from an angel to a human is not done lightly. It took intervention by an angel of Destiny, who said that this was part of Ami's Destiny, to convince him to grant the operation. Jean was almost vindicated during the process -- the severe Shyness was not part of Ami's original personality. Indeed, it appears to manifest itself as an intense fear of expressing herself emotionally; sound policy for an Elohite, but a great interference with human interpersonal relationships. However, Ami had been willing to take the risk. Nobody said having a part of an angel's soul implanted in you was going to leave you completely yourself afterwards.... Her composure, however, is her own, if possibly enhanced a bit recently, and may have been one of the factors that allowed Jean to accept the request. I tend to think people can get more use out of a plot seed than a superior (if you look at the ones we have, some of them include cool new NPCs -- or new superiors -- or new relics -- or new ethereal entities etc.) and they also come complete with suggestions on how to use them, ie. in the plot seed. jo _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 18:22:23 -0400 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: Re: IN> Canon Question - Identification of First Redeemed At 7:47 PM -0400 5/8/01, Jo Hart wrote: >>I think Jo has a description of Oresto -- or proto-Oresto -- on her >>website. > >Wow, you have a good memory. I'd count that as a fable around the truth, perhaps, instead of What Happened Exactly. Maybe. Things may have been more mythic at other times. (And may yet be again? Who knows. Yes Dave I know you're on the list too - I don't mind *that* much the thought that I'm giving you ideas - I can't wait for next Sunday to see what sort of GM you are! I now have a nickname. According to FallenSeraph (Dave) who says he is a Balseraph servitor of Kobal, I'm a Bright Lilim of Creation (I have a habit, which I'm trying to break, of smiling nicely at people and asking "may I have some squash, please pass me my bag" etc. etc. and I thought the pictures of Laurence in S1 were cute, ergo, according to FallenSeraph, I am a Lilim) BrightLilim (the entity formerly known as Jinnie) - ------------------------------------------------------------ "And a devil in a black dress watches over, My guardian angel walks away" Sisters of Mercy, "Temple of Love" - ------------------------------------------------------------ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #2212 ******************************** The material here is (C) 2001 Steve Jackson Games, Incorporated.
