At one point, it seemed as though there would be no end to the pain; no end at all. Through eyes dimmed with tears, he glared – or tried to glare – at the tall, well-dressed woman smoking quietly in the poorly lit room. He was conscious of the cold metal collar around his neck, aware that it must be the artifact keeping him bound to the chair beneath him. The smell of his own blood was thick in the air; he almost gagged when he thought he smelled something else – this wasn’t part of the plan, not part of the plan at all. The woman smiled at him. "Too bad you weren’t born a Calabite, Merchiel, or you’d have that collar off in no time. In the meantime, why don’t we have a chat before the Malakim arrive...for old times' sake. It’s been ages." She blew a smoke ring in his direction. Merchiel blanched. "Ephesus?" he choked. "That’s right, Merchiel. And it’s time to settle old scores." Her eyes gleamed wickedly as she reached for the knife on the table. Ephesus began life as a Lilim of Secrets – bound to Gebbeleth at her creation and given only the briefest of introductions before she was shamed, hurt and broken at the hands of Merchiel, a Habbalite who would be her teacher and master for the next century. She worked hard to please Merchiel and Gebbeleth, and after years of back-breaking toil, she found herself on Earth, in a vessel, with none but the most fragile of Geases to keep her bound to Hell. She did the only thing she could think of doing, once she’d slipped past Merchiel’s watchful eye – run to the nearest angelic Tether and request asylum. She felt the light of Heaven burning her as she stepped into the Tether’s grounds, but the fear of being caught and the terror at returning to Hell as Merchiel’s plaything kept her from turning back. To her surprise, the Archangel Raphael herself was at the Tether when she came calling – prompted, she later learned, by the mysterious Yves, Archangel of Destiny. Raphael listened to her request with deep compassion, but in the end flatly refused Ephesus. There were too many unknown variables – Heaven had never redeemed a Lilim, she was still Geased to Gebbeleth, and clearly Ephesus was not seeking Heaven for selfless reasons. The Daughter was not turned away, however...two Cherubim and a Malakite were assigned to protect her while she learned to become selfless. A decade later, Ephesus became the first Lilim to be redeemed by an Archangel. As the first Bright Lilim, she set the standard against which all other Brights would be measured. While her Discord weighed heavily on her soul, she served the Archangel of Knowledge with all her strength...fearing only that her former Superior would one day call in the Geases she still owed him. Fortunately for her, the Prince of Secrets seemed uninterested in invoking her Geases, and left her alone. Merchiel, on the other hand, was said to be searching high and low for the Tempter who had betrayed him. Ephesus stayed in Heaven, educating fresh relievers about life in Hell and providing valuable insights into the mind of a Lilim for Heaven’s warriors. The death of Raphael was a wake-up call for Ephesus. There was a War being fought and while she was finally on the right side, she was not on its front lines. Quietly, she spoke to some Malakim of the Sword, who agreed to train her in the martial arts. She spent the next few years learning how to fight and adjusting to life under her new Superior, Yves. She still mourned Raphael, however, and swore revenge on Lucifer and his minions for her Archangel’s death. Ephesus currently spends much of her time on Earth, slaying demonkind wherever she finds it. She has a Role as a slightly batty history professor-cum-archeologist, which allows her some eccentricities and gives her enough leeway to hunt demons and to guide mortals to their destinies. While she serves a traditionally non-warrior Archangel, she has earned the respect of a great many Servitors of War and the Sword. Yves, for his part, understands her Need to kill demons, and even instructs his Malakim to work closely with her. After all, she knows the enemy better than they do. Recently, in what she considers a prime example of divine intervention, Ephesus’s most heartfelt prayers were answered. The first Bright felt her Geases to Gebbeleth vanish...and rejoiced, weeping, as she understood what it meant to be truly Free. (Ephesus is identified in the IPG as the first Lilim to be redeemed. Her attunement from Knowledge is conjectural and is calculated at 5 CP for point-balancing purposes. If the GM allows the Knowledge attunement, Ephesus can be considered a balanced starting character.) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 13:21:03 -0700 (PDT) From: Maurice Lane Subject: Re: IN> Amalgam Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 12:54:39 -0400 From: Jonathan Walton Subject: Re: IN> Amalgam > Even if there are Fires in his eyes now. >You can't do it, can you, Moe? > >You can't even go three months without coming up with >another heretical scheme to destroy Belial in some >horrible painful and soul-twisting way. Close examination of the whistle will find the words 'Manufactured on Earth - Where Else?' printed on the mouthpiece. Rashagal was an artificer for the Archangel of Creation back in the days before the Fall. Afterwards, he found himself in the service of Asmodeus, where he gained great skill (and notoriety) as one of Asmodeus's primary investigators. Rashagal often found himself in situations where we was working under the auspices of the Humanity Attunement, and as such could not use songs to inform his fellow agents where their target was. This proved to be a problem, as he more often than not found himself trapped by the very attunement that was giving him his cover. Rashagal soon realized that this problem could be overcome with a small amount of ingenuity, a small amount of essence, and a willingness to give yourself one _hell_ of a headache. After some period of trial and error, the 'whistle' was ready for its first trial run. In the middle of a group of outcasts who had figured out his allegiances, Rashagal gave it a 'little bit of juice' and blew... The results... were interesting. Soon after recovering from trauma, Rashagal was informed by Asmodeus himself that whatever he had done to get people's attention had been quite effective and that he was never, ever to do it again without clearing it with him first. Unfortunately this would not prove to be the case, as Rashagal had a mild rebellious streak and (more importantly) had sold the design specifications to a grateful Kobal. Copies and variations of this Relic can now be found throughout both Heaven and Hell, but all of them carry the name of the person who came up with the idea. (Mechanics - When activated, the user spends any amount of essence that they deem necessary. This activates the Song of Celestial Cacophony (pg 31, LC). In the initial trial run described above, Rashagal had 6 Celestial forces, spent 10 Essence, and got a CD of 6, for a grand total of 360 point of disturbance. No matter how the user tries to insulate himself, they are going to be at Ground Zero of a very _loud_ noise, which is guaranteed to cause the user Mind Hits, as well as one hell of a headache.) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 14:02:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Maurice Lane Subject: Re: IN> Apocamon Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 08:27:26 -0700 From: Ryan Elias Subject: IN> Apocamon >http://e-sheep.com/apocamon/ > >Enough said. An Attunement on a Servitor can't fall >into enemy hands the way that an artifact can, and the >commander of God's armies has got to know how undesireable >it is to have your own weapons pointed at you. Well, for a couple of reasons really. The first is that he is a Servitor of The Sword... meaning that a Sword is a very important item for them, much more important than an Attunement and so on. It was a personal thing, status and so on. In lieu of a Distinction. The second is.... ummm... the Ofanite is a bit, reckless with Essence and doesn't have a good nose for handling his personal store well. The Artifact is Laurence's way of saying, I don't trust you not to blow all your Essence *before* you need to invoke the Attunement that will possibly save your butt. But having said that, I realise that you require a little more grunt in battle. So here is a Fine Sword, blessed by me, with some Essence you can *only* use to invoke my power through the sword. Let it fall into enemy hands... and, you're toast. There is also a reason we call Gibrel "Snowchain".... but more on that later. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 10:03:32 +1100 From: "james walker" Subject: IN> Re: in_nomine-digest V1 #2217 > Hmm. Note that Ketsl is a virtuoso with Numinous Corpus, and frequently modifies these Songs to make them 'less obvious' ie more kittenish. Attunements: Seraph of War, Malakim of War, Mercurian of War, Proficiency(Claws), Sure-Footed, Vassal of War (Ketsl may "purr" in the Celestial Tongue"), the Angel of Big-Eyed Fluffy Kittens. Special Rites: Defend, or encourage someone else to defend a kitten (this is the only Rite which Ketsl will give out, as the others only work intermittently, depending on his current Word Forces), Comfort or defend someone while in a kitten host/vessel; protest against animal testing. Special Ability: Ketsl gets +4 to his Emote skill if he can make eye contact with his target. Malakite Oaths: (I) Never suffer an evil to live if it is my choice; (II) Never allow myself to be captured by the armies of Lucifer; (III) Never refuse a call to battle from a fellow angel; (IV) Never leave a comrade behind in danger; (V) Never leave a kitten in danger, or refuse to rescue a kitten. Ketsl was an ordinary, pyscho Virtue of War who made the mistake of asking Michael for a trivial Word which he could use to 'soak' the forces he kept losing while Soul killing demons. Unfortunately for Ketsl, Michael had manoeuvred Novalis & Christopher into allowing him to get his way on a number of issues if he put one of his angels up for the Word of Big-Eyed Fluffy Kittens. The continual laughter of his fellow Virtues did not concern him; he had what he needed, and the rate at which he soul-killed demons increased dramatically. What he hadn't considered was how his mindset would change as his Word influenced him. Years spent in kitten vessels, helping children of all ages (especially those who are supposedly 'adults') remember how to care, and defending them from drunken and abusive parents, have shown Ketsl how important his Word is to the War. 'Evil' doesn't just mean demons, and many a child molester has died under Ketsl's claws and fangs. As the angel of Big-Eyed Fluffy Kittens, Ketsl has a special loathing for Vapula - the use of kittens in animal testing is now often fatal, although the researcher will normally die in an 'accident'. THAT has attracted Dominic's ire, as many researchers ARE trying to make the world a better place, and don't deserve to a lingering death in one of Ketsl's traps. Of course, as a Micheline, Ketsl couldn't care less about Dominics' problems. What he should care about, but isn't yet aware of, is that Iolanthe has demanded that Kronos arrange his Fall, so that she can have him as a pet. Other racers, or racing fans, will also automatically react to him at +3. Finally, he can detect whether or not a race has been fixed if he makes a Perception roll: he won't know who is doing the cheating, but he'll get a general idea of how badly. Well, the thing that you have to remember about Laurence is that he's a Malakite: that Choir likes the entire concept of honorable combat, even when it's nonviolent honorable combat. Malakim can see quite clearly the Honor involved in testing one's self against one's peers, and racing of various types has always been a good way of doing that. Skill, nerve, discipline - these are virtues that the Virtues have always thought good things to encourage among humanity. The fact that the practice can also bleed off excess energy that might otherwise be used to raise unnecessary Hell is merely an added benefit. Then again, maybe it's just the fact that even an Archangel can appreciate the fun involved in taking a souped-up automobile and making it go at an appreciable fraction of Mach 1. Anyway, now you know why the Angel of Racing officially works for the Sword. He's had the Word for about a hundred and fifty years, and been assigned over to the Wind for most of them: Sizouse might have switched Superiors (he and Janus get along just fine) if it weren't for the Wind's dissonance requirements. So it goes: Laurence isn't a bad absentee boss to work for, anyway. If you kill demons when you see them, do whatever assignments he gives you without fuss, send over a Soldier for recruitment now and then and generally keep your nose clean, Laurence won't micromanage. What Sizouse does for a living, oddly enough, is not join every corporeal race that he sees. It would hardly be fair, really: there simply isn't a human driver that could consistently beat him in a fair race (Sizouse treasures the memories of the rare times that he's ever lost). What the Ofanite does instead is to keep the races fair. His usual Role (one of the better freelance mechanics on the auto racing circuit) allows him to keep a close eye on mundane and supernatural corruption in that particular sport. There's a good deal of money to be made in stock car racing: Sizouse isn't fond of spectator gambling, but he helps out those Servitors of Trade that watchdog that pastime anyway. It's necessary work: Servitors of Greed have been trying to regain lost territory, and the Traders can use every hand that they can get. The Ofanite isn't fond of demons, either, so it all works out. In fact, Sizouse plans to use the goodwill that he's been building up with Trade to eventually do something about the corruption involved in horse racing. That, however, is going to be an epic job, so Sizouse needs to get his ducks all in a row first. The day is, however, young. Sizouse loves racing: in fact, it's just this shade of an obsession for him (even by Word-bound standards). His only real regret is that he almost never gets to participate himself against a worthy companion. PCs with Driving/6 that encounter him might as well accept the fact that eventually they'll have to demonstrate just how good they really are. Aside from that, he's got that patented Ofanite energy and cheerfulness going for him. People like him ... but it's the rare person that will drive with him _twice_. Surprisingly for a Servitor of the Sword, Sizouse treats traffic laws as something that happens to other people. He's never gotten into an accident, after all, so obviously he knows what he's doing... ===== Liber Licentiae Moeticae: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Last updated 04/29/01(this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Driving (Horse). ;) Riding (Agility, -3): The character can ride a particular sort of animal. Said animal should be about up to the character's armpits at the shoulders, although larger and smaller animals can be ridden at -1 for each foot shorter or taller it is. (Thus, a character whose armpits measured at 5' could ride with reasonable ease an animal from 4'1" to 5'11" at the shoulders. Any larger or smaller and the character would suffer penalties.) This skill must be specialized by type of animal (horse, dog, mule, griffon, etc.), although riding other animals only inflicts a -1 penalty to the TN. Although it is not strictly necessary, the skill can also be sub-specialized by saddle (no tack, bareback, sidesaddle, western, English). ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 22:17:59 -0500 From: EDG Subject: IN> Listrules (Was Re: in_nomine-digest V1 #2217) It's not an official rule, but it is out of the listrules. All enemies within sight have to roll against Will-2 to even try: even if they succeed, they get a minus to all combat rolls equal to (the Will Roll's CD) for the next minute. If the opponent fails, double the penalty. Unfavorable Interventions on the Will roll will cause the opponent to burble at Hemah, no matter what, for the same period of time. All of this nauseates the angel, but the utility of this Attunement in combat cannot be denied. Rites: Curl up with someone for an hour, while in B-EFK form (Actually, Hemah doesn't mind this Rite at all, in sharp contrast to everything else about this Word. It's had an interesting effect on his social life). Oaths: "Never suffer an evil to live, if it is my choice." "Never surrender or allow myself to be captured by the forces of Lucifer." "Always act in the best interests of my Superior." "Never allow personal dignity to interfere with my duty." (Hemah had these oaths /before/ he got his Word. They seemed safe enough at the time...) Have you ever seen the results of an unfavorable Intervention when a celestial gets a Word? It isn't pretty, let me tell you. Now, there's supposed to be these angels around and singing the Trisagion (thus supposedly eliminating this from happening), but, well, it looks like somebody screwed up. Or maybe they all rolled unfavorable Interventions themselves. It's all low-probability, of course, but even low-probabilities come in sometimes. None of this makes Hemah feel any better. He was _supposed_ to be the next Angel of One Bad Mother... (Shut Your Mouth), but there was this weird twanging sound, everything went all bluish-purple for a moment and suddenly there was a small white kitten sitting on the floor of the Seraphim Council chambers looking around and desperately trying not to swear. The red bow around the neck was the worst part. That was just the fragging icing on the fragging cake. Anyway, it took six months for the Council to even find out what went wrong (and give Hemah access to his old vessel again). They might have tried a fast Word strip-and-replace, except that Michael had made a horrifying discovery in that time. Well, horrifying to Hemah, at least: the angel actually had an effective Word. It was the cuteness, you understand. The angel's kitten form was somehow insanely engrossing to the Enemy. Anyone that faced him would be hindered - often fatally - by waves of guilt from the idea of even thinking about hurting such a cuddly little ball of furry goodness. It was just like Novalis' Seraph Attunement, except that the good guys could continue to kick ass and take scalps without any problems. OK, that means that it isn't really like the Seraph of Flowers Attunement at all, but the point remains valid. Michael *wants* this added to his arsenal. He's a fair Archangel: Hemah was given the option of having the Word stripped anyway. Unfortunately, the Malakite's own sense of Honor forbade him from depriving his Superior of a useful tool, no matter how personally undignified it might be. There was no guarantee that the Word could be ever fully duplicated, after all. God help him, it was in Heaven's best interests if Hemah stayed the Angel of Big-Eyed Fluffy Kittens, so the angel refused. Oddly enough, by any objective standard Hemah's done very well out of his accident: Michael has an even higher opinion of him now than he did before, and his fellow Warriors don't even snicker at him anymore. No matter what he looks like, his mere presence in a combat means that the Enemy is distracted. That's worth respect. He's also a bit more of a hit with certain angels, which is nothing to sneeze at. Not that everything's rosy, of course. By now, Hemah can actually use his original vessel, but there are so few occasions where it would actually be more useful in a fight. He's had to learn a lot of Songs to compensate (and get at least a little quality combat-time in). More troubling is the fact that the current strength of the Word is insufficient to give similar abilities to anyone else: Michael has thus logically decided to try to inflate the Word's potency. Watching a bunch of combat monsters attempting to make Big-Eyed Fluffy Kittens more important to humanity may be hysterical, but not when you're from the inside looking out, as it were. But the really bad part ... well, one of the problems with being in a particular vessel is that it affects your thinking after a while. Hemah _liked_ being a huge bruiser, thank you very much. He _liked_ pounding demons into the ground. He was good at it. He was seriously looking forward to encouraging humans to beat the crap out of the forces of Evil by his mere example. Now, he's most effective when he just looks at some demon with big, unblinking, soulful eyes. True, he's usually quickly preparing a laser beam shot at the same time, but it's just not the same. It doesn't bother him quite as much as it once did, though, and that sort of scares him. Especially since he started to catch himself... Well, he's been catching himself _purring_. ===== Liber Licentiae Moeticae: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Last updated 04/29/01(this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
