It's like how the religions of some tribes in America call for men not to cut their hair short. It's a cultural thing, and as Khalid has been a zealous follower of Islam, and as he views a similar adherence to Islam in the angels serving him as the proper thing to do, it makes sense as an Oath for his Malakim. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 13:02:25 -0700 From: Sean McCarthy Subject: Re: IN> A Vignette, of sorts Stunning. One thing that complicates sorting out "official" (i.e., sanctioned by the Quran) Islamic doctrines and cultural traditions is that much of Islamic law is based on "hadiths" -- literally, "stories" -- which are the recorded sayings of Muhammad. Hadiths are not found in the Quran, but most Muslims consider anything Muhammad said or did to have nearly the same authority as Quranic scriptures. Of course, a lot of Islamic scholarship is concerned with evaluating the validity of various hadiths, since there are hundreds, if not thousands of them, some of dubious origins. And some Muslims discount the authority of hadiths entirely, since the Muhammad did say in the Quran itself that he was only a man and that only the Quran should be concerned the word of God. IIRC, the origin of Muslims being required to wear beards comes from a hadith in which Muhammad said that Muslim men should keep their beards, to distinguish themselves from unbelievers who shaved. (As with many such rules, one might surmise that shaving was becoming a popular practice, imported from more "fashionable" infidel cultures, and traditionalists thus didn't want Muslims doing it.) Of course I had to write a loophole for Khalid himself to go clean-shaven, since the damned illustration showed him beardless. - -David ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 17:16:48 -0400 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: Re: IN> Re: Tactics of Armageddon At 4:12 PM +1100 5/14/01, james walker wrote: B'gods, man! You can waste the Ofanite there, of course, though the Cherub will know and call the attack. OTOH, if the Ofanite was not the _only_ one to have gone there, then some previously-prepped angels can descend when the Ofanite is scrambling away -- a small group to guard and one to do the shielding Song(s). Around now, though, the demons start invoking their Prince and the attack is called off due to Prince, but hey. (Assuming the demons know what's about to come down upon their heads, that is. Your first statement is absolutely true. Sailors Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are definitely not bubbly cheerful. Regarding your latter statement, you may be speaking of the last episode of Sailor Moon S, "Second Chance," wherein Sailors Uranus and Neptune attack Sailor Moon rather viciously. However, this is merely a test for their future Queen -- Sailor Moon manages to win without striking a blow. How lethal they would have been... well, since it's fairly certain they're not Habbalah, the test is more along the lines of Stone. Lethality shouldn't be the *intended* result of failure except in a test of how good or evil someone is. They did want her to give up the throne, though, so how far they might have gone is a matter of interpretation. Sailors Neptune and Uranus strike me as the nastier stereotype of Elohim. They have a mission to perform, it's for the ultimate good of the world, and they're not going to let caring or sentiment get in the way. [ever play TFOS?] What if the War /wasn't/ being fought across the globe? What if only a single, small, american town was chosen to determine Humanity's worth . . . In this small American town there are two rival high schools. The first is Saint Mary's, a private religious school. The second is High School High, the public high school. They compete on the sports field, but also in other ways: Science fairs, Scholarships, and sometimes the rivalries spill over into harsh pranks in town . . . Saint Mary's This school is an old, old institution. When the town was first established back in the day, it was the only school in town. That was before a small group of parents and students rose up and demanded that a secular, non-religious school be established. They received support from the American government, and before long they had their own high school up and running. But this hasn't slowed Saint Mary's down in the least. Since then, they have improved their library, their student counseling, the computer services, and most importantly, their sports teams. Now, Saint Mary's boasts not only the football team, but boy's and girl's soccer, volleyball and women's lacrosse. Principal: Dominic, tough but fair Head Librarian and Guidance Counselor: Yves, who speaks little, knows much and encourages others to do the same Guidance Counselor and School Therapist: Blandine, who helps students discover and reach for their dreams Economics and Political Science Teacher: Marc, one of the best. Biology and Health Science: Jordi, woe to those who disrespect the animals who gave their lives to help students to better understand them. Physical Education, Self-defense and Meditation: Zadkiel, who helps students to defend themselves from other as well as from themselves. Chemistry: Gabriel, she's a bit loopy, but /man/ does she make science fun! Geology: David, a tough teacher, but very also very good Woodshop and Industrial Arts: Janus, who always has time to work with his students. Computer Science and Physics: Jean, who also is quite willing to give students individual attention. Spanish, French, and Arabic: Khalid, and you can't learn a language under Khalid, you probably can't. German, Latin and Greek: Litheroy, who reveals to students the essential nature of language. Home Economics: Novalis, known for her somewhat overly maternal attitudes. Music and Art: Eli, who devotes his entire life to the both. Trigonometry and Calculus: Michael, who runs his class at a fast clip, not quite sink or swim but close enough. Algebra and Geometry: Laurence, whose two classes are required of all students, also tough but fair. Psychology and History: Christopher, whose insights into the human mind are incredibly useful. Sports Teams The Saints (school mascot) play many, many sports, in which they complete with rival high school. Football: Laurence Baseball: Gabriel Volleyball: Janus Soccer: Michael Women's Lacrosse: Zadkiel, who works very hard to support her girls. Basketball: David ********* High School High Here, most of the students hate going to school. Most drop out as soon as possible, and with the faculty here, it's hardly a surprise. The school was formed when a group of students and parents decided that they couldn't stand to be involved in a religious institution. Eventually, they came to see themselves as cast out and turned to forging for themselves. And thus, High School High was born. Principal: Lucifer, who's never in his office, but is believed to be always roaming the halls, supporting his students and faculty. Vice-Principal: Asmodeus, known for his ruthlessness, strict interpretation of the school rules, and for being a big proponent of discipline. Head Librarian and Guidance Counselor: Kronos, a subtle individual, much preferred by students over the other guidance counselor. Guidance Counselor and School Therapist: Beleth, who scares students into shaping up, or shipping out. Biology and Health Science: Andreaphulus, who helps parents to teach their kids that sex at their age IS NOT acceptable. Home Economics: Haagenti, well known for his amazing culinary talents, a student favorite. History, American and World: Kobal, another favorite of the kids, in his class you learn how history can actually be a lot of fun. Political Science and Economics: Mammon, who helps students become strong individuals to compete in the global market, and to understand the important role that currency has had in the rise and fall of the powerful. Psychology and Film: Nybbas, helping students to understand the nature of the "Real World" Chemistry: Belial, who inspires his students to respect the powerful forces of nature, if only through fear of being scorched. Computer Science and Physics: Vapula, whose courses are known to be backbreaking, but those who survive are at the top of their class. Biology: Saminga, who is a strong believer in dissection . . . Art and Music: Furfur, who demands that students work to uncover their true emotions and express them in a manner no one can ignore. American and World History: Lilith, who helps students recognize the importance of individualism. French and Spanish: Alaemon, whose teaching techniques result in an incredible amount of student work. American and World Literature: Valefor, who encourages students to take the ideas of others into their own work. Mathematics and Physical Education: Baal, whose courses are sure to whip you into shape. Sports Teams The Devils play many sports as well: Football: Saminga Baseball: Belial Volleyball: Valefor Soccer: Baal Women's Lacrosse: Lilith, who strongly supports her "Daughters" Basketball: Malphus ********** anyway, the idea is that characters would be students at one of the high schools.
