Eep! Well done. Prometheus was a brilliant choice.
(Of course, the fact that Uriel gutted the guy who had Prometheus chained to

Subject: IN> Mirror In Nomine : Celestial Mechanics 1 - Angels
Mechanics
In this world, the fundamental division between Heaven and
Hell isn't about selflessness versus selfishness. Instead, it's more
about conformity versus choice. Heaven wants everyone to work as
their part of the divine plan, furthering along the course of the
universe as they see it. Hell feels people should be free to make
their own choices about how to lead their existence, and that helping
the greater good isn't always best if it causes large amounts of
localized suffering. It's meant to played with a fairly
authoritarian, ends-justify-the-means Heaven, and a freedom-fighting
heroically roguish Hell. In general, the contrast level will be
fairly low, though it can be turned up to really make Heaven into the
bad guys, if you so wish. The brightness, on the other hand, will
probably be mid-high, as there no overriding source of EVIL out to
have its way with everyone.
Also, the conflict between Heaven and Hell is much more low
key. Outright violence is rare, with propaganda and psychological
warfare being the primary vehicles of attack. Indeed, no superior
has ever been slain by the other side, though a few have gotten too
frisky and been put down by their own kind.
Destiny and Fate are also redefined. Fulfilling one's
Destiny involves being a perfect cog in the divine plan, and fitting
in with the expectations of society and others. It requires the
complete surrender of individual goals to the goals of the group
whenever such may be in conflict. Fulfilling one's Fate involves
thoroughly distinguishing oneself as an individual, and making a
unique contribution to the universe that has repercussions of some
sort, however faint and distant.
Heaven is relatively sparsely populated, as most souls move
on after a while towards the Higher Heavens, to presumably merge with
God, or move on to the next stage of the divine plan, or something
like that (no one that gets to Heaven questions this). For the most
part, the job of enforcing said divine will is left to the Angels, as
it was meant to be, though most souls do serve for a time, willingly
donating extra essence to the cause. Hell is an entirely different
place from that of the canon world. Humans aren't tortured for
essence, and there is a general order to the place, though by no
means a stifling one; it resembles an idealized anarchist commune
more than anything else. Anyone who doesn't play nice (attacks
others, steals things for no good reason) will soon have to face the
attention of some rather large and imposing beings who have an
interest in making sure that trouble doesn't break out on their home
turf. There's a fairly long waiting list of humans wanting to be
rebuilt into Evim, and people on it spend much of their time
providing essence for those at the head of the line, though they do
so voluntarily. There's also a bunch of people who don't have any
desire to go back to Earth, and who spend the now-infinite time
available to them pursuing whatever they fancy.
The Ethereals, being sprung from the minds of humans and not
having been designed by God (as far as anyone knows), are not
considered part of the divine plan and thus not looked upon too
kindly by Angels. They are nearly one and all closely allied with
Hell, which finds any idea that so enthused someone that it came to
life certainly worthy of attention.
There are two celestial tongues--Inflected, spoken by Heaven,
and Positional, spoken by Hell. Inflected adds shades of meaning,
emotions, and ambiguity by modulating the original form, while
positional inserts additional subtle subnotes between the chords of
the original. As it is actually a subset of the celestial languages
that they do use, all Angels and Demons know Archaic Celestial, in
which lying is impossible, and it is the only common tongue between
the two in celestial form. To a speaker of one of the two modern
celestial languages, the other sounds like fragments of gibberish in
Archaic Celestial, with no discernible meaning. While the modern
forms are used for most tasks, for something important the speaker
will use the Archaic form, to indicate the seriousness of the matter
and trustworthiness of the speaker. While Archaic cannot be spoken
in corporeal form, either of the modern forms can, but it'll sound
very odd, and not the least bit like speech, to any human listening.
(The additions of the new languages warp the original sufficiently to
allow its otherwise perfect notes to exist on the imperfect corporeal
realm.)
Castes of Angels:
Seraphim
Seraphim, in addition to being investigators of the truth,
are also charged with the duty of showing this truth to others. They
can be quite convincing speakers when attempting to bring about
someone to their side, as miraculously perceiving the convictions of
the person speaking to you can be very persuasive.
In addition to their basic resonance from In Nomine, Seraphim
may also impress upon a subject the Truth of any statement. With a
successful *Will* roll, the listener will see the Truth behind a
statement uttered by the Seraph (which must be true--the Seraph may
not lie here, or it automatically fails). Treat this as if the
listener were a Seraph that had just successfully resonated that
statement with the check digit earned by the actual Seraph. This
only works on statements made by the Seraph; it can't be used on any
third party source.
Cherubim
Cherubim are the appointed guardians of humanity, watching
over them and making sure they do not stray from the paths devised
for them.
Cherubim have the same resonance as in canon In Nomine, but
their dissonance condition is that they may not take any action to
help move their attuned closer to their Fate (such as encouraging
individuality or rebelliousness), or personally harm them. They will
try and prevent others from harming them, though it is not actually
dissonant for them to fail to prevent this, just emotionally painful.
Ofanim
Ofanim are as in canon In Nomine, though with the absence of
Malakim, their most common role is as the actual warriors in the army
of Heaven.
Elohim
Elohim are as in canon In Nomine, though they make up a
proportionally larger share of the Host. Their keen objectivity and
ability to determine what must be done to get a plan to operate make
them valuable to the Heaven of Mirror In Nomine.
Kyriotates
Kyriotates are as in canon In Nomine. In addition, their
hosts, upon return to their bodies, have a vague feeling of having
taken part in something bigger than themselves for some higher
purpose, though they have no specific memories. This sensation can
be addictive, sometimes to the point where not being possessed by a
Kyriotate can become painful.
Mercurians
Mercurians are as in canon In Nomine. Their job is to help
people realize how they weave into society at large through their
relations with others.
Grigori
Grigori are as in GURPS In Nomine (which has been translated
to In Nomine and put up on the web at a URL I can't remember).
Obviously, they were never outcast, and there's far, far more of them
than were ever created in canon In Nomine. Aside from watching for
demonic interference, they use their closeness to the human
perspective to try and engage people in thoughtful discussions about
why higher purposes are necessary for personal fulfillment.

Subject: IN>Contest Idea
I was just sitting here thinking, and I came up with an idea that you
all might find interesting. For a while now on the list, we've been
talking about the fact that IN seems to be stagnating in the markets. I
think that perhaps I may have an idea that might jump-start it.
My idea is a design contest. Here on the list, we're always coming up
with new Archangels, Demon Princes, variations on themes, and what not.
In fact, Moe Lane has an entire alternate history (one of at least two
that I know of from him) running. Why not ask Steve Jackson to run a
publicized open contest, where people would submit their designs for new
Archangels and Demon Princes for the series. Please hear me out on this.
In the main books, we have at least eight unclaimed Words, four to each
side: Love, Laughter, Knowledge, and The Waters in Heaven's camp. Sloth,
Corruption, Oblivion and Disease on Hell's side. My idea is that an open
contest be run on the net and publicized as well, with the contest being
to see who could design the best Archangel or Demon Prince of one of
these open Words. The winner would earn a chance to work as a freelancer
with SJ Games in the creation of perhaps a new Cycle: the New Contenders
or something to that effect, and the resulting publicity should draw many
people who otherwise would not have heard of IN to the game, increasing
demand so that new books and supplements (the Ethereal Player's Guide,
anyone?) started getting written and published? What do you all think?
Charles Smith.

For the truly selfless, yes. But it occurs to me that
his Word also encompasses just punishment. To people who
deserve that, he wouldn't be quite so nice.
Great idea, BTW.

Subject: IN> A demonic parable....
*Done in Asmodeus's James Earl Jone's style voice to a group of gremlins and
newly fledged demons of the Game*
Once there was a Demon named Ahrimane....
Ahrimane was infamous as a Servitor of the Demon Prince of Corruption but to
limit his service to long dead Beelzebub was very foolish because the demon
made private pacts with Kobal, Baal, Malphas, and many others. Ahrimane did
not care that he had allied with often opposing Princes because he always
gave them what they wanted and made sure that he left his jobs with proper
scape goats for the Game and with pleasant bounty to serve the interests of
the words of the Prince he allied with. For Andrephalus he might leave a
woman berift of a loving marriage and devoted now to starting a sex cult
while offering her husband and family to Saminga and Belial in a terrible
blaze as he routinely confounded the angels of Uriel in capturing and
destroying him.
The demon whose band is irrelevant was gifted with a silver tongue and was
surprisingly always able to convince his Superior or the other superiors who
rewarded him that he was actually spying, allied, or somehow advatageously
positioned for them in the service of the other Prince whose distinction he
had. There was something innately likeable about Ahrimane and his simple
and joyful devotion to the cause of evil. To read his littany of titles
would sound like a listing of the distinctions Princes give on record and
would take several minutes of time that would be better spent seeking the
traitors among us. Beelzebub was pleased with his servitor though and
routinely offered him the chance for a word but Ahrimane graciously declined
saying that he believed he could better serve the Prince of Corruption in a
fashion without such tied down methods and of course told the truth to aid
in this lie in the hint he was working toward something grand.
Upon Beelzebub's death, Ahrimane commited such a grand series of evil deeds
that to this day it is forbidden to speak of them for fear demons would
destroy themselves trying to repeat the genius of the plan or lose
themselves in despair to such intricate weavings that they could never
match. Ahrimane then approached the ultimate evil Lucifer and finally
petitioned for a word as Lucifer relaxed in a den of poisonous substance.
Ahrimane to Lucifer's questions of what he would do if he was Granted the
Word he asked for; Sin, Evil, Temptation, the word was grand and many of
them might be the true one. I of course know the word but will not share it
with such creatures as you. His plans and schemes were intricate and
involved taking the word and it's resulting power far beyond what Beelzebub
had ever acomplished and dreamed of to tear down Heaven by it's roots and
manipulate his brother Princes to serve the cause fully of promoting
darkness and plague. Lucifer listened in a half daze from his chemicals
before looking at hookah and saying....
"You know this stuff is really bad. It's the stupid week old water at the
bottom."
and Ahrimane recieved his word.

From: "Charles Phipps"
Subject: IN> An Angelic Parable
*Said in Christopher's light whispy voice to a group of crowded relievers
with many hand motions and noises*
Once long ago there was an angel named Trinity who was a servant of Children
and she was filled with the Love of God and a passion for improving mortal
rights. Trinity's faith in the divine plan was absolute and never once did
she doubt her master's will was for the best. Eventually after many years
of service in our beutiful land she was chosen by me to go out into the
world and spread the joy of God.
The Earth was a frightening and terrifying place to her however because
instead of being a joy to help, many thought it was a burden. Children were
forced to live in conditions adults would collapse from, they're voices were
silent, and there were much worse things including terrible disease and
clouded skies that blotted out the sun even as humans prayed from the rain
that never came from it, at least with anything drinkable.
With all the power of Heaven she could not understand why they could not
simply end all of humanity's ills. If humanity needed food then why did not
Heaven give it to them? If they lacked love why did they not comfort them?
If a person slept in filth why was it not cleaned?
I took her then on a journey where there were many awful things from camps
where men and women were gunned down because they chose to say God went by
another name, I took her to a brothel where girls barely out of swaddling
clothes did acts they did not understand or could appreciate...and in many
cases did not not want because adults found it arousing, I took her to see a
demon who had butchered many and I made her watch it's head caved in and
soul-death from a servitor of Michael.
I showed her that humans caused terrible ills and possesed awful appetites
and I showed her what celestial also did to each other during the war to
stop or encourage this.
Trinity was shaken to the Core and for the first time she wondered why God
would have created a planet where such horrors would be done...why he could
create a race like humanity and the angels above them who could do such
things to each other. I said to her it was out of love for them that they
could make their own mistakes and horrors....
she said unto me "And does a mother let her child wander into the street
when he is first walking unaware of the oncomming cars?"
My response was that some mother's did and she broke her heart before
casting herself down onto the Earth, believing in the innate evil and
horrors of the world. She believed that God had created this world to
satisfy some sadistic joy for pleasure and was a Demon Prince worse than
Lucifer, she doubted even God existed for it seemed easier to believe random
chance created the planet I showed her than to believe an entity could be
made enough to make it.
Many years passed and the tales of Trinity, now called One were many. She
spoke to angels and demons both trying to get them to end their war and
ended many times in Limbo before she returned to lash out and butcher them
both, believing humanity should walk it's own path. She spoke to humans to
give of their plenty to the less fortunate but fearful they and their
families would suffer should they heed her beat and raped her. She
encouraged the less fortunate to rise up and destroy the plentiful but
afterwards they came to oppress others. Turning inward One did nothing and
eventually to glut her conscience slept with many mortals as she tasted of
their narcotics, power, and wealth.
Finally at my doorstep she emerged shaking with dissonance and asked if she
could return to my service.
"Why?" I asked.
"I long for some sense of purpose....I have none and remember dimly some
sense of who I was long ago."
"Then my answer is no. Return to me in a year and a day after observing
humanity. Abide by God's laws and listen to the Symphony around you."
A year and a day passed and through that time I kept watch with my minions
comming along occasionally to pass on advice or service.
"I come to you to return to god's service." she said.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because I choose to better myself by bettering the world. God I see is a
far reaching father who never left me in the Symphony....I chose to leave
him though and only by locking me up could he have kept me so away. I have
done all the things humans have and the fallen yet I am certain he still
loves me and hopes I may become bright and beutiful in a way that can only
be discovered and accepted not given. I believe he hopes it for all the
fallen mortal and elsewise." she said to me and was reborn a pure angel of
my service anew.
The Moral of the Story: We cannot allow evil to continue but it is a part of
the price we pay for growing up that we cannot destroy it alone. With
patience, love, and strength of will we can return to the childhood we pass
from God made us in and that childhood is everlasting.
