Special Rites: Encourage a human to treat another human as sub-human; tell a tale about evil goblins. It's so much easier to hate, oppress or despise someone if you think of them as being sub or non human. As Demon of Goblins Urukia encourages people to dehumanise their fellow humans; she acquired her Word after persuading the Japanese to consider the Ainu goblins, but she has been successful throughout the world. If this was all there was to Urukia, she would merely be another of Malphas' favourite agents. However, Urukia is aiming for the big time. Rather than settle for people treating others as goblins, she's determined to breed goblins who will worship her as their creator. Her plan is quite simple - she is locating humans who have correctable deformities which in someway make them resemble goblins, and (after making sure they have the surgery necessary to hide the deformity) encouraging them to breed. (Her favourite trick is to Possess one of them, seduce the other and then swap hosts to seduce the original target). She hopes to end up with a 'race' of people who will look identical to everyone else (due to surgery) until society collapses, at which point a race of goblins will spring up and be taught to worship her. Of course, bringing people together is a dangerous goal for a Servitor of Factions, so Urukia is careful to ensure that her breeding program destroys the other social connections available to he breeding stock. Despite this, she'll be happier once her race of goblins are established, and she can limit herself to destroying relationships with non-goblinized humans. Now, this is something I was discussing with Maya, so really we cooked it up together, heavily influenced by the Bureau in INS -- for those who are familiar with that. *** - -- "What did you expect?" said the thin figure in the black suit. "I'm a demon." - -- "But you still came here." - -- She shrugged. "I had no choice." - -- "You had a choice." - -- "Please don't wind me up, Emil. You --" - -- "Please?" The man she was speaking to lit up a cigarette as he cut in. "Since when do your type ever ask for what they can take?" - -- The demon pressed the lips of her vessel together and closed her eyes; she looked tired and not a little desperate, however she tried to hide it. "You.won't.like.me.if.I.lose.control." Her face was a mask. - -- "It's hard to control, isn't it?" Emil murmured. - -- "I thought there was a deal on the table," she said eventually. Her voice was carefully neutral. "I was mistaken." - -- Emil grinned. Outcasts learned to treasure such illicit enjoyments as came their way, and irritating demons happened to be his personal hobby. - -- The woman plucked her briefcase from the chair, waving the cigarette smoke away from her face with a precise movement. "Good day," she said, meaning the exact opposite. - -- The office door swung shut before she reached it. It was heavy, and it was locked. - -- "Indeed," the man leaned back in his chair, his voice gravelly and precise. "Now sit down, Elea, Renegade Habbalite of Factions. You want to join Universal Exports, and I have the paperwork and the permission. But our Director doesn't like the word "deal", as that implies that you could possibly negotiate your way out of it. That won't happen. I'll go through the terms . . . " ~~~ Most renegades never redeem and join the ranks of the angels. Some have never heard of redemption and would dismiss it as a lie. Others are only interested in following their own selfish desires, unbeholden to any god or demon prince. Similarly, most outcasts are never located by the inquisition; many eventually Fall but a sizeable proportion simply go their own way. Really, there is a vast pool of celestial talent out there just going to waste. Talent that, whilst it has crossed the line and declared its independence, could still be useful to either Heaven or Hell. And come to think of it, sometimes jobs come up that truly require secret and expendable operatives. One would expect a longterm outcast or renegade to know a lot about working quietly . . . it makes sense to use the most appropriate tools for the job. So it should be no surprise that Jean has quietly operated a temping operation for such die-hard celestials for a long time. Disguised as a mortal corporation, employees are carefully headhunted and recruited into the secretive heart of Universal Export. The corporation provides roles, the corporation provides vessels, and the corporation provides work; not fulltime work, but employees know to expect the phone-call that means they have a job to do. In return, the corporation also provides security, a haven from Dominic and Asmodeus' watchful minions (after all, if the Archangel of Lightning can't organise ids and alter computer records on a whim, then who can?), and a place for these lonely creatures to finally mix with their own kind. It is even possible to arrange for dissonance and discord to be removed. No strings attached. Do the work and get the payment. Jean does have a sleeping partner, an influential infernal figure who organises paperwork and takes care of the demonic side of things. Only very high ranking managers in Universal Export even know that he exists, and none of them know who he is, although it isn't impossible to guess that a demon prince is involved. Indeed, some of UEs missions might be interpreted as serving Hell more than Heaven. But beggars can't be choosers, and neither can outcasts and renegades. There are some rules, of course. 1. Never speak about the real corporation. Even an Archangel is not immune to the Inquisition; Michael's trial proved that. Jean cannot afford for Heaven's less pragmatic superiors to find out that he works with demons. Universal Exports maintains its privacy by any means necessary. It is run by an Elohite, so that truly does mean *any* means necessary. 2. No recruiting. Employees include both outcasts and renegades. They are forbidden from trying to incite other members to either fall or redeem. Most employees regard this as a good thing; they are allowed to maintain whatever worldview they choose. The no redemption side of the contract, combined with the first rule, has meant that redemptions are vanishingly few. (In order to redeem, a demon would have to work out that an archangel was involved in running the show, and, of course, be willing to die in order to serve Heaven - - among hardcore renegades, this attitude is rare to say the least.) The only angel who did redeem whilst working for Universal also vanished soon afterwards. 3. No exit. Once in, never out again. This rule isn't necessarily stated up front, although it could be deduced. ~~ The silent partner is of course Asmodeus. Who can say how many renegades have been classified as "potentially useful" and steered deliberately into Universal Export's clutches? Demons of the Game don't know, of course. Even those involved in tracking down renegades who were recruited don't know that their failure to catch their prey was preordained by the Prince of a Thousand Eyes; and they are still tortured for their failures ... *** By the way, I received my Karmic Revenge for having organised the first IN Iron Ref based on the original Pyramid competition, because I got tapped to write a horror scenario for Iron Ref2 this week (Pyramid subscribers will be able to peruse the results at their leisure; for everyone else -- you're not missing much with mine, but the other scenarios were pretty good and definitely worth the price of admission!) jo _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Aug 2001 14:11:17 -0500 From: Earl Wajenberg Subject: Re: New Group (Was Re: IN> Iron Rev III: The Demon of Yogurt) Thank you, now I know what Universal Exports is. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since man has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake. The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed." - -- Revelation 16:18-19 * * * * * * * The Archangel David knows immediately when a society is at a peak of demoralization. He also knows all about geology. Very shortly after the Two Witnesses rise, as shown by Litheroy on global television, David leads an attack on Rome -- from below. Fissures from an earthquake split the city into three big chunks. This is, in fact, plague number seven, and is topped off by a rain of hundred-pound hailstones, provided by Oannes and Janus. PCs may take part as in the Plague Duty seed, or as part of general warfare. The surviving civilian population of the area, together with some of the military, responds with a massive looting spree. But Therrian himself is unharmed. He isn't there; he's on the Plain of Megiddo, in Israel, with Baal and his gathering troops. * * * * * * * "But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped his image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur." - -- Revelation 19:19-20 * * * * * * * Roleplaying seed: Where Were You at the Second Coming? Frankly, there probably isn't a lot of roleplaying at this point, except, perhaps, for creative reacting. In terms of game mechanics, The Battle of Armageddon is just some more combat for the PCs, unless they are close associates of their Archangels. But they are present at cosmic events, and should see some of them, and hear about others almost immediately thereafter. Even should some PCs be killed, they should probably be allowed to watch in a visionary dream, while in Trauma. * * * * * * * What happens: In Heaven, Christ has stood before the Throne in the form of a Lamb for seven years. He now also manifests a human form and leads a mass descent to Earth, touching down on the Mount of Olives. Christ leads the 144,000, followed by every Saint in Heaven, followed by every mortal human in the area, Soldier of God or not, who stands with Heaven. In parallel, Michael leads the angels. All of them. On the other side, Baal and Therrian, with Kronos at their side, lead the legions of Hell, every last demon, undead, and hellsworn. It soon becomes clear that Heaven just plain has Hell out-gunned. Yes, there are more demons than angels, even including the angels that have come back from the Upper Heavens. But there are *lot* more humans, Saint and mortal, who are willing to fight for Heaven, than there are active supporters of Hell. Christ captures Therrian. Michael captures Kronos. Both are vessel-slain on the spot and cast into Hell, into the Lake of Fire, where they are obliterated in an access of agony and horror. * * * * * * * "And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time." - -- Revelation 20:1-3 * * * * * * * What happens, continued: Michael then turns his attention to Lucifer. They're well-matched, but Michael has many friends among his fellow Archangels, while, by now, Lucifer has only Baal. In a fight that is mainly on the Celestial Plane, Michael seizes Lucifer and turns him over to Apollyon. Eli then presents Apollyon with a very special chain of his own devising. Michael and all the other Archangels hold Lucifer while Apollyon binds on the chain and sings a Song of imprisonment. (And, somewhere out on Megiddo, Lilith, who was given the Word of Freedom and made a Princess for releasing Lucifer from Hell, screams and falls down dead, killed by the Word-damage she's taken. Her Forces go whirling down into the Lake of Fire.) Apollyon throws Lucifer into Hell. Christ and the Saints slay all the mortal and Undead hellsworn. The remaining Princes, demons, and Ethereals flee, routed. Armageddon is over. But the Apocalypse isn't. Songs: Attraction (1/3/3), Charm (1/5/5). Demonic kindness is very, very simple. "Are you wearing your warm underwear?" sums it up; it's the use of the appearance of caring to destroy relationships and trust. Chari was bright enough to figure out this idea, which had obviously been a part of the word of Factions for - oh, *years* and has put it into action so beautifully that Malphas had no real choice but to sponsor her for the Word. Chari loves cities; she can skip from host to host, having them doing something out of character - but not too much - and moving on. Twenty per day is an average score. Naturally, any angel that discovered her work would be thinking in terms of dragging her to a nice strong tether and giving her a major force-stripping. Given that, she isn't a demon for the long haul or the intricate plot; she reckons that doing her Lord's work wherever it finds her is enough for the day. And if you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you. Yes, she loves cities, and yes, she skips around. That's self-defence because her tactics rely on rarely being discovered, and fleeing celestially whenever it happens. But she has a interesting arrangement with a Belseraph of the media, who commands a freelance scriptwriter. He works on implanting the social situations where kindness causes disruption into as many media scripts as possible; she makes them believable via real-life events. You'd never believe how many family shootings start because Mother has an extra turkey leg for her favoured son, when the father's still hungry. Overall, this arrangement benefits both Words, but that doesn't mean it would be approved of by the demon's superiors. Still, Malphas knows that Chari is pretty well a personification of a real human tendency, so he isn't going to worry. Demon of Kindness: The demon gains +1 to +6 (GM's decision) to the check digit of any roll intended to disrupt a relationship by means of ostensible kindness, according to the strength of the relationship. One reason Chari skips around so much is that repeatedly adjudicating on this attunement tends to make GMs depressed and annoyed at her. - --- John Dallman jgd@cix.co.uk ------------------------------ End of in_nomine-digest V1 #2326 ******************************** The material here is (C) 2001 Steve Jackson Games, Incorporated.
