This turned out to be insanely useful the day the Mercurian took the slumlord at gunpoint to meet each of the people in his tenement building. Presumably things like tarot decks, M:tG cards, and anything else with evocative pictures would be cool. I am tempted to use my Shadowfist cards next time around: "Hm, I just drew Slo-Mo Vengeance. The man in front of you is a CIA assassin who is lent out to the Mafia as needed. However, he's only doing this because the CIA injected his grandmother with a deadly poison, and they give him an additional dose of the antidote each time he kills someone for them." And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years." - -- Revelation 20:4-6 * * * * * * * So Heaven has won Armageddon, the wrong failed, the right prevailed. Now time for the ultimate happily-ever-after, right? Well, yeah, but there's still plenty to keep an angel busy. Here are ideas, not so much for adventures, as for settings and campaigns. * * * * * * * Roleplaying seed: First Resurrection There's a new government to set up. Christ rules in Jerusalem over the whole Earth. Ruling under him are the Saints, each with different talents. (The rest of the blessed souls remain in Heaven.) Then come the mortal survivors. Angelic and Saintly PCs will be given a task and a place to go -- possibly by Christ, less overwhelmingly by the Metatron, an Archangel, an angel, or a senior Saint. The number of possible tasks is vast. Many are not glitzy, but they could be good roleplaying fodder from their human interest. Possibilities include: - Lots of angels will be sent as assistants to Saints. - Food, medicine, and shelter and urgently needed all over the world. It has to be delivered. Heck, it has to be *created*. - As with any mundane government, lines of communication and supply, and centers of authority, need to be set up. This time, it's all over the world. Fortunately, the population is relatively small, historically speaking, and all on your side ... theoretically. - The ecology is devastated. Everything that mortal science and conservation efforts can do, must be done. On top of that, nature itself has to be guided along. At least, no one has to worry about Disturbance any more. How many of those ark space stations *did* Jordi get built? - Lots and lots of people are either heavily traumatized, or expecting instant paradise, or both. The new, improved, but still not paradisal, reality needs to be explained. Sometimes, it needs to be explained to the violently disappointed. * * * * * * * Roleplaying seed: Return of the Raptured What about the Raptured? Do they come back now? Do they get a choice? Do they come back in the bodies they left, or in vessels? They might be able to help a lot. They might be pressured by the remaining mortals to pass information back and forth between Heaven and Earth. They might be very different, after more than three years in Heaven, to the possible consternation of people who knew them before. This could be very striking with children. * * * * * * * Roleplaying seed: Divided. Conquered? Satan was locked up in Hell, but it doesn't follow that all the Demon Princes were. You can continue the War at a less cataclysmic level by supposing that some subset of the Princes are still loose. With Lucifer gone, they're probably not cooperating with each other much. They might be trying to establish their own realms in the remote Ethereal Plane, in the astral gap between Heaven and Hell, or in remote parts of the Corporeal Plane, like other planets. The surviving Princes may have given up the idea of conquest, but they're cut off from their Essence-farms of damned souls, now, so the urge to predation will always be struggling with their sense of caution. And some Princes -- Saminga, for instance, and Vapula -- are probably nutty enough to go on fighting. Baal would go on fighting even if he thought it was totally hopeless. So might Asmodeus. At the other extreem, some Princes might be trying to cut a peace deal with Heaven. * * * * * * * Roleplaying seed: Refugees, Renegades, and Outcasts Some demons are locked in Hell. Some are still following their Princes, outside Hell. But the number of new Renegades must be huge, especially if you include the involuntarily abandoneed. Life for a Renegade must be very different, now. They don't have to worry (or not nearly so much) about the Game getting them. They are much likelier to get pressure to Redeem. (Should Novalis set up a Purgatory in which to incarcerate them while she tries to convert them?) They are also likely to get caught by the Tsayadim or some other branch of Heaven and thrown into Hell after Lucifer (whole or in pieces). Should they seek out one of the remaining Princes, or just run, run, run? * * * * * * * Roleplaying seed: Mortal Resistance Heaven rules, but not all mortals are necessarily happy about that. All the actual hellsworn were killed at Armageddon, but there are some people who just want to be left alone -- if the universe isn't indifferent, they wish it would become so. Not all these people are necessarily evil, either. They may be clinging to goals that have no place in the Millenial world, or they may be the victims of the less adroit members of the Heavenly hierarchy. The result can be situations that require careful spiritual/diplomatic handling. * * * * * * * Roleplaying seed: Shut-Ins and Visiting Hours Speaking of purgation, what's going on in Hell? Suppose that Apollyon can let select spirits in and out. There could be regular patrols of warden angels, keeping an eye on things. They could escort "missionaries" trying to redeem human and celestial spirits. There could be attempted prison breaks. What's life in Hell like, cut off from Earth, minus several Princes, but NOT minus Lucifer? What's Lucifer up to? Is he consumed with sheer spite, planning to do his worst at the end, just for the satisfaction of hurting God as much as possible? Is he contemplating an apology, in the hopes that someone else will take over the position of the dragon that gets thrown into the Lake of Fire? Is he scheming to survive in the Lake somehow? * * * * * * * Roleplaying seed: The Wheel Some people have been out of the loop during Armageddon -- the ones due for reincarnation. As the population starts to climb again, they'll start showing up. Will the angels of Death and Destiny be more accessible now? Will people be given the options of remembering past lives? For that matter, how about all the human souls in the Marches, the ones who went to pagan afterlives? Does Heaven want them on Earth now? Or in Heaven? Or can they stay put? Are Blandine and Uriel going to have another tiff about all this? * * * * * * * Roleplaying seed: Old Words Shall we have a new Archangel of Light? or Laughter? or Valor? Or at least angels with those Words? Anyone want to try for one of these? * * * * * * * Roleplaying seed: Utopian Fantasies The goal of the Millenium is not just to recover from Armageddon, but to spread the paradisal conditions of Eden all over the Earth. If you, the GM, have a pet political or social theory, this might be the time to showcase it and see if you can convince your players. Is Christ a communist? a libertarian? a monarchist? Or is Heaven going to cultivate a unique glory in each land? Make America the Land of the Free and China the holder of the Mandate of Heave and France the home of the Divine Reason, etc. Will Jean now open his files to humanity? Will Jordi and Novalis play lovely games with evolution and ecology? What's life like on paradisal Earth? Here endeth "And I Feel Fine." Gets even more fun with a Laurencian! A couple of thoughts - one is pulling minor characters from fiction. if they've got more than a cameo, you should be able to remember 3 (ig)noble deeds for each. That also makes it easier to bring the character to life. The dice rolling must be slowing the game down somewhat. For minor characters, you can always just say 'nothing major, it's mostly family/work related/the neighbours/hobbies/church' as appropriate, and only fill in details if he's interested. Also, is he interested particular forms of (dis)honour? (other than for finding targets, of course). If so, including the Song of Virtue with his next set of rewards may make your life easier - if he's only looking for one form of [dis]honour for CD game hours, you won't need to be nearly as creative. Hope this helps, James. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 23:32:46 -0400 (EDT) From: "Rev. Sorry. ;) Moe Wave Motion Gun Yup, Sparky only *thought* that he had cleaned out Vapula's stash of vintage anime tapes. Incidentally, the VCR of the Prince of Technology is a s u b tle and frightening artifact, indeed ... but that's for another time. The Wave Motion Gun is a sonic weapon, more or less: anyone with a firearm Ranged Weapons skill may use it at -2. The target, if hit (Celestial Shields will protect, but not Corporeal) will take 1d6 Body Hits for every level of the relic. If Stunned, the target will also be knocked back 1d6 feet by the sheer force of the blast. The user may choose to set the device on area effect, causing half damage in exchange for targeting anyone within a 30-degree forward arc. If this option is taken, all Dodge rolls made by those targeted gain a +2. Also, those with the Damaged Sense (Hearing) Discord may s u b tract 1 die of damage for each level of the Discord. Range is a straight 100 yards, with a wrinkle: the beam will harmlessly pass through anything that is not Symphonically Aware: this includes all inanimate objects and most animate ones. A shooter could use this relic to sweep a crowd for celestials or Soldiers, without risk to putatively innocent bystanders. Lastly, ammunition is effectively infinite and the relic is virtually indestructible. All in all, this item would hardly seem to be an item of Vaputech ... except for the minor problem about the composition of the beam itself. Strictly speaking, the Wave Motion Gun does not shoot sound beams at all. It shoots beams of Disturbance. Ignore the usual Disturbance rules when this weapon is in use: it's redundant. Every entity within (CD of the Ranged Weapons roll) miles that is capable of detecting Disturbance will automatically learn distance and direction. Everyone within a 500 yard radius with Symphonic Awareness must make a Will Roll at -4 or cringe at the horrific sound as the Symphony is casually whacked with large metaphorical mallets. This will include the user's own allies, of course - and the user, come to think of it. Again, having the Damaged Sense (hearing) will protect against the latter side-effect (+2 for every level of the Discord). This is not a s u b tle weapon, and there are a lot of entities out there that will be more than happy to take out their poor, abused ears on anyone stupid or brazen enough to use this relic on a regular basis. This only makes it more attractive to most Calabim and virtually all Servitors of Hardcore (the latter are usually half-deaf, anyway). Saner celestials just try to give a Wave Motion Gun to somebody _else_, then run like Hell before it gets used: it does make a wonderful distraction when one needs a quick getaway... Wave Motion Gun Relic/6 (unknown and obnoxious Song) 18pt* Self powered 0pt Disturbance: see above - 8pt (fair, I think) Fragility: Unbreakable, dammit +5pt Tracking: see above -2pt (but anybody can play) Use Restriction: Ranged Weapon roll -1pt Visibility: Automatically detected (hoo, yeah) -3pt Total Cost: 9pt *The Essence cost of zero adds 6 per level to the cost, and the universal reaction modifier of -3 per level takes it right back. ===== Liber Licentiae Moeticae: http://www.stormloader.com/users/moelane/innomine.html Last updated 07/29/01(this is usually way out of date) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? First, of course, I deliberately resolved several bits of Canonical Doubt and Uncertainty, like what Eli was off doing, and, most spectacularly, the status of Christ. This last was automatic in an IN rendition of dispensational apocalyptic. Second, I supposed that all those thought "soul-killed" were really still in existence, either in the Upper Heavens or in the Lower Hells. This is only somewhat non-canonical, since the GM's Guide points out, in the section on running denominational variants of IN, that immortality of the soul is a very firm Christian doctrine. Actually, I did more violence to dispensational theology, by making the damned be ultimately soul-killed after the creation of the Lake of Fire. Finally, there's a *little* but more to go. After the Millenium, Lucifer has one more chance to tempt everybody. Then he and his supporters are wiped off the Corporeal Plane by fire from Heaven. Then there's your actual Judgement Day, when every soul in creation is hauled up before the throne of God and judged, the rejects being thrown into the Lake of Fire. After that, there's a new creation. There are a few enigmatic hints about this at the end of Revelation, but very little material compared to all the colorful images used for the Tribulation. The most spectacular image is that of the New Jerusalem. Everyone has heard of the pearly gates and the streets of gold, but this city also has foundations of gemstone, and is more like a garden inside, being full of Trees of Life. Most spectacularly, it's cubical, measuring about 1,400 miles on a side -- about the distance from New York to Houston, London to Athens, or Rome to (old) Jerusalem. But this would only be the starting point for a whole new setting. However, I was thinking that perhaps there is, in fact, one last thing for people to do which would affect, in some way, the outcome of the Apocalypse. And it's Novalis' schtick. Could, just possibly, Lucifer (the previously-angelic soul) be in some way separated from the Dragon, the Devil, the incarnation of all Evil in the Universe, that which is going to be utterly and irrevocably destroyed? Could the Archangel of Light return? He certainly has every motivation to try it at this point, since the alternative is soul-death. And maybe that would be enough to fulfill the prophecies. Hey, showing mercy to your LAST worst enemy is pretty Christian itself. Redeeming the Devil is hardly something anyone with any brains attempts in a regular In Nomine game. But if a few hundred years into the millenium Heaven has nothing particularly else on its mind, and you know the Devil can't soul-kill you any more... Just a thought. You can probably assume that the average human has a track record of various mundane good and bad deeds, ranging from giving a bum some spare change or opening a door for an old lady or helping a coworker with a computer problem to being rude on the phone or parking in a handicapped parking space or trying to peek down a woman's blouse when she bends over.... None of these things are going to interest a Malakite, and the vast majority of humans will rarely rise above such banalities. So, after explaining this to him, you can probably get away with telling him "You don't sense anything remarkable" when he resonates someone who's just an average Joe with no remarkable sins or good deeds. I doubt the player will insist on an individualized catalog of virtues and sins every time he resonates someone, as long as you don't omit anything interesting or significant. (If you do this, though, you might want to still _occasionally_ provide some mundane results when he resonates someone...otherwise he'll start to assume that EVERY time you tell him something specific, it must be significant.) - -David ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Aug 2001 18:16:07 -0400 From: "S.D." Is he resonating a group (i.e., saying he'll just resonate everyone in sight) or picking out specific people (i.e., you mention a Random NPC and he resonates instantly)? If the former, you could just have him roll once and give generic actions at the appropriate level, as a 'sample' of what he picks up, rather than rolling once per person and/or coming up with specific ig/noble deeds for everyone. And you can add in something unusual/important if you need it as a plot hook or something. If he's doing the latter, you could change the 3/4 check digit results to give only one or two deeds, rather than three ig/noble or three of both. Pulling things you remember doing/seeing might be good, and making them extremely mundane could too (i.e., "The teenager over there signed up for a fourth year of history in high school when she didn't have to," "the man to your right yelled at his child because he was in a bad mood", etc.) Or you could just say 'you get the usual human actions' or note interesting bits ("the person over there might make a good Soldier of [insert AA here], judging from what he likes to do", "that woman's worst sin sounds vaguely diabolical", "that guy's so selfish he's got to be a Balseraph", "she's met her greatest potential; she's a Saint"). For Greatest Virtue/Worst Sin and highest potential/lowest depth, you could do whatever you do for human destiny/fate. Hope that helps. ~S.D.
