He is basically a variant of Marc, but sufficiently different to make him interesting (I hope), and he should make a good complement to a campaign based in a major tourist centre. A Mercurian of Marc, Martin joined the first settlers to America, ensuring some standards of fair trade were carried to the New World. As more and more of the world was made available to Westerners, Martin travelled with them, sometimes as a fur trader, or a travelling merchant. After a time, he became aware of the concept of travel as a trade itself, and devoted himself to ensuring fair condtions for travellers. In the early Twentieth century he was awarded the Word of Tourism, and in the 1960's surprised many in Heaven (and Hell) by becoming an Archangel. Martin took his ascendence to the big boys with grace, however, and tends to defer to Marc, whom he still considers to be his boss. Martin spends little time in heaven, preferring to handle business on earth, and can often be found in large tourist centres, watching the crowds and smiling. Dissonance: Martin sees tourism as a way to rejuvanate local economies, and keep money flowing globally. The role of his servitors is to encourage tourism wherever they go, both on a local and international scale. It is dissonant for them to act in a way which would discourage tourism; to be involved in a firefight at a major airport, for example. It is also dissonant for a servitor of Martin's to go a number of days equal to his Celestial Forces without making a mortal think about a foreign culture, or the joys of travelling. Servitor Attunements: For the purpose of these attunements, a tourist is a person who is travelling for reasons other than strictly business. The GM, of course, has ultimate authority to judge. Seraphim - With a touch, Martin's Seraphim can tell where a person would most like to visit. Cherubim - When a person or object of their attunement is travelling as (or with, for an object) a tourist, the Cherub's resonance automatically works. Ofanim - These Ofanim may add their CF to a resonance roll to determine direction while in a major tourist centre. Elohim - With a touch, Martin's Elohim can see how a person feels about a particular country or its inhabitants. The country must be chosen before contact is made. Malakim - Martin's international police, these Malakim are the scourge of drug smugglers and football-hooligans the wotld over. With a glance, they can detect who is travelling with the intent of causing harm (GM's discretion who this affects). It is dissonant for the Malakim to allow such people to continue on their journey. Kyriotates - Martin's Kyrios have access to all of the host's memories of travel as a tourist. With a successful Will roll upon leaving the host, they may also implant a strong desire to travel. This counts as fulfilling Martin's dissonance requirement. Mercurians - Often acting as guides to travellers in the big cities, Martin's Mercurians can add their CF to resonance rolls towards tourists. Servitor Attunements: Tourist Attraction - At the cost of 5 essence, the angel may turn an area upto one mile in radius into a tourist magnet. Any travellers passing within 200 miles of the area wll find themselves drawn towards it, and any locals preparing to travel will change their intended destination to the Attraction. If the area isn't actually interesting (GM's discretion), the tourists will leave within a day or two, and will stop arriving after the attunement has worn off. If the area is a previously overlooked tourist gem, however, word of mouth will turn it into a genuine tourist attraction. Servitors of Martin sometimes use this attunement to establish tethers, drawing tourists to undiscovered areas of beauty or interest, then quickly capitalising on the sudden tourist boom. Travellers Check - Upon entering an area (usually the confines of a city) the angel instantly knows how many tourists in general pass through the area every day, and how many are currently there. Distinctions: Vassal of the Tourist Trade - With a glance, the angel knows the places a person has visited as a tourist. Friend of Travellers - A glance reveals the above information, as well as how much (if at all) they enjoyed the trip. Master of Globetrotting - With a Will roll, the angel may implant CF people per day with a strong desire to travel, as with the Kyriotate attunement. The angel must talk to the person to do this. Relations: Martin is generally popular, though some Archangels accuse him of eroding cultural differences, and cheapening historical monuments. Jordi is particularly hostile to Tourism, accusing it of impinging upon many animals' natural environments, and of encouraging the exploitation of animals in zoos and circuses. Allied - Marc Associated - Janus, Christopher, Novalis Hostile - Jordi Rites: Spend 1 hour discussing the merits of a foriegn culture or the joys of travel with a mortal, without boring or annoying them. Spend 3 hours meditating in a major airport, or place where 300 plus tourists visit per day. Convince a person to book a holiday that day (3 essence). Chance of Invocation: 3 Invocation Modifiers: +1 - A tacky souvenir bought on holiday +2 - Photo album containing 50 or more holiday photos +3 - At a major airport during holiday season +4 - $1,000 (or equivalent) in travellers cheques +5 - Hand-wrtten travellers journal, detailing at least 12 months of travel +6 - Over 2,000 tourists in one place Richie H-R - -- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2001 20:26:56 -0400 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: Re: IN> Intellectual Property, Derivative Works and IN-Community Etiquette At 8:23 AM -0600 8/9/01, Julian Mensch wrote: >[...] So I put some italic text at the top noting that this >aspect of the writeup is adapted from other authors' work, and gave credit >where it was due. A attunement of the Metatron's from many years back. Special Rites * Alleviate someone's mental anguish significantly * Cure someone of Insanity +2 Word Forces: 13-15 Noman has memories of passion unbridled of justice most fierce and truth insilating every aspect of his form when he was the consort of Gabriel and the Angel of true Perception of the World. They had seen each other and he had been a she then with a seeress's form that had been greatly attracted to the Revelator's ability to bring forth the true message of God that he alone was privy to with perhaps only Yves as an exception. When the Metatron fell though the task of dictating the Lord's word fell to Gabriel and they drifted apart with the angel of sanity entering the service of Blandine who could appreciate the titanic feeling of seperation from one's love. In truth the being who would take the name Noman could not give her love to Gabriel anymore out of the twisted word strife that was occuring due to the horrors of the Fall and the sudden influx of so many people who saw things "wrong". It was centuries until the trial which sent the next shimmers of word shock through his word and caused him just as much agony. The madness of Gabriel drove the angel thus to shatter his heart and seek out a cure for his beloved's madness. Effectively he could not stomach Heaven's reaction to his lover's action. Shamed by the necessity of it she changed her persona to that of a man's to represent paternal nuturing and took the name Noman to represent that he was no one until he had recovered his Lady's mind. Only then will he allow himself to face restitution for his crimes. Surprisingly Noman does not particularly believe that Belial is solely the cause of her affliction but has diagnosed his beloved with a variety of "stress based contributing factors" including the fact that the Metatron is no longer present to dictate the Lord's commands, the absence of Uriel, the burden of Illuminating the World without Lucifer, and quite possibly Raphael's duties. Litheroy's elevation Noman whole heartedly supported as best he could and believes it's a step in the right direction for curing his lady of extreme overwork. Khalid's return is equally pleasing because of the support Noman believes he can give the Lady and also he believes an affimation of Muhammedian Islam will greatly cut down Gabriel's feelings of abandonment. His part in either of these events is best left to subjectivity. The restoration of the Temple Mount to the service of Fire and rediscovery of the Bethlehem tether is a current project of Nomans who believes that the Lady will feel greatly comforted by these physical reminders of her roots. Noman is unfortunately extremely hunted by Dominic who views the word bound's self taken outcasting as an extremely bad example of neglecting one's duties and considers him one of the first causalities of Gabriel's madness affecting servants of other angels than fire. If not for the fact that Noman is remarkably adept at concealing himself and convincing servitors of Judgement to speak with him before they bring him to a tether he would have been caught long ago. Dominic is currently viewing also a number of his actions as an outcast included repeated contact with demons as grounds for soul-killing though Noman considers them necessary for his cause and also his duty as an angel of sanity. - -Charlemagne ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 05:43:53 -0700 (PDT) From: Michael Walton Subject: Re: IN> The Archangel of Tourism An interesting idea, but he seems more appropriate as a high-ranking Servitor of Trade to me (Master level Distinction, definitely). Martin was originally going to be the Angel of Tourism in the service of Marc, but one character wasn't big enough to include all of the elements I thought the angel of tourism should contain. I wanted someone who could act as a guide to tourists (like Mercurians of Martin), remove "undesirable elements" from tourist centres (like Malakim) and act as Celestial travel agents (Seraphim). I also decided that there were too many major tourist sites on earth for one angel, even a powerful one with the Celestial song of Motion to a high level, to coordinate successfully (and I certainly couldn't think of a reason why he'd spend all of his time in Liverpool, where my game is set), so I made him into an archangel. The idea is that he's essentially a high leve l Trade servitor who's been very recently promoted due to the enormous popularity and scope of his word, but still tends to think of himself as a trade servitor. If you're still not convinced, though, persuade a coupe of players to play Malakim of Martin, and send them to the airport looking for drug smugglers. It's an adventure in itself. This does bring up a question about the Word-bound angels, can they give distinctions and abilities like Archangles, or are such abilities only for Superiors? All Word-bound have one or more Rites which they can choose to share (or not) with other Celestials. Those with more powerful Words may also be able to grant Servitor Attunements (I allow no more than three, and only really strong Words get that many). Choir/Band Attunements and Distinctions are the sole province of Superiors. Words also come with Dissonance conditions. Non-Superiors can't impose their Dissonance conditions on other Celestials -- but IMC, they can make the voluntary acceptance of those Dissonance conditions a prerequisite for granting their Rites and/or Attunements. ===== Michael Walton, #9805-068 What came first -- the orange, or the color? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Good question. I assumed that only Archangels can bestow ablities, distinctions, dissonance conditions etc., as I've never even any canon examples of a Word-bound servitor having that ability. However, it does make sense that a really powerful Word-bound, whose word covers many lesser aspects, eg. tourism should be able to bestow Word specific attunements. To stick with the example, Marc's own attunements have little to do with the tourist trade; servitors of Martin, even if he was just a powerful WB, would still require choir and servitor attunements more specific to tourism. "Absolutely. Very useful," murmured the Malakite, radiating innocence, as did several other Malakim near him. Behind him, his monitor chimed, and an elderly man's voice droned, "Stay a while, and listen!"
