Lucifer basically threw the spiritual, if not the de jure, leadership of New Heaven's unified strategy into Eli's lap. Eli, you might have guessed, is not comfortable with responsibility. Lucifer defers to Eli in council to the point where it occasionally becomes silly. He may give an opinion or act on his own, but when Eli says something, Lucifer makes it his Party Line, without any resentment or backbiting. When Eli is throwing out ideas and trolling for feedback, this is rather less than helpful. (Eli has been annoyed enough at one point to say, "I think we should all wear jesters' caps and dance down Market Street in Boston to the Love Boat theme to inspire the humans there." Lucifer shrugged and replied, "They'll at least get a good laugh out of it.") Still, between Lucifer's advice and initiative and Eli's grudging willingness to be Leader, they work fairly well together. Eli'd be more comfortable if Lucifer would occasionally take a stand, or even take over, but Lucifer's one serious fear is the temptation of leadership, and it's a road he refuses to walk again. Character Notes: Giles is the Watcher assigned to Buffy, the current Slayer. As an Elohite, he is somewhat oblivious to the extraneous pressures applied to a hgh school girl in 1990's America. This is the management concern Jean expressed in his email to Calendar. Giles has a tendency, like all Elohim, to put the job at hand to the head of the queue. He's also somewhat loath to embrace new technologies, instead preferring the collective memories of books to the hive knowledge of the nets. As a Friend of the Sages Giles has a four year college education in every subject. This would preclude advanced knowledge of ancient languages, but basic interpretive knowledge is certainly available. However, he certainly knows the pertinent ones at level 4: Ancient Greek, Latin, Sumerian, Hebrew, Egyptian, etc. Giles appears as a tall, brown haired, bespectacled, refined, and distinguished English gentleman in his mid thirties. A Lilim servant of Lust may as well have created this vessel, but being Elohim, Giles is completely oblivious to the potential effect he could have on young ladies. It's a good thing he's on the side of the Divine. Until she took the teaching job at Sunnydale High School, she was instrumental in putting together village.com, an ISP that used its suburban subscribers and computer recycling to subsidize the connection of inner city households and schools to the internet. Now she's supervising the installation of Sunnydale's new computer lab, and will be the new computer science teacher at Sunnydale. This is absolutely perfect, as she loves nothing better than training young protohackers to hack for Good. She describes herself as a "techno-pagan", but that's just to maintain the credibility of her net persona. Her charge is to provide Giles and Buffy with technological support for their mission. Left to his own devices, Giles would never have bothered looking at a computer, never mind the internet. Her second task is to see to it that Giles realizes that Buffy has other problems than vampires and minions of Lucifer. Her strategy for this mission? Give Giles a problem other than Buffy, namely, herself. So far, she's succeeding. Syndia tends to be brusque and uncompromising in his celestial duties, and that carries over into his role as principal of Sunnydale High. He prizes discipline, obedience, and order above all else, but now that he's beginning to see some of the threats quelled by the Slayer and associates, he's beginning to get the idea perhaps it would be more appropriate to calm the corporeal disturbances that occur when civilians witness vampire attacks, etc, and letting the Slayer team work things out themselves (providing they don't start accumulating Discord, of course) than getting in their way while they work. Unfortunately, this means that he needs an outlet for his urges to enforce disciipline. That outlet is the Sunnydale student body. But they'll grow up to be better adults for it, surely. She was asked to leave her last school after burning down the gymnasium while it was full of vampires. Her mother is unaware of her role as Slayer, as are her teachers and the vast majority of the student body. She spends most of her time with Giles, Xander and Willow in the Library, and going to classes, though she has been known to cut classes occasionally. She has to balance grades, a social life and her duties as Slayer, and it's proving to be a bit much, but so far she's keeping her head above it all, but barely. She also happens to be in love with Angel. Xander and Willow Xander (pronounced Zander, short for Alexander) and Willow are Buffy's two best friends. They've been best friends since childhood, and they know of her role as Slayer, and they help out quite often, with Willow doing research, and Xander doing legwork. Xander is about 15 years old, grades aren't great and he has a major crush on Buffy. Willow is a rather plain looking 15 year old girl who's quite comfortable with computers and knows how to do research. She has a major crush on Xander. (this is High School, remember?) Angel Redeemed(?) Vampire Angel (short for Angelo) is a 240 year old vampire. At some point during his unlife, a gypsy curse restored his conscience/soul. He no longer feeds on Humans, and now he's in love with the Slayer. Giles doesn't necessarily trust him, though he has helped out several times. In fact, in game terms, I'm not even sure that undead redemption is possible, but i does make for interesting character possibilities. Is he redeemed, or just playing the double agent? You make the call. Cordelia Cordelia is a self absorbed Popular Girl. She has been the victim of at least two supernatural attacks, and was rescued each time by Buffy and company. She *is* grateful to them, but she certainly won't be seen in public sharing the same air as Buffy and her "loser friends", so it's not as if she'll ever express her gratitude. She did confide to Buffy that she knows how fake her popular clique can be, but she'll maintain them at all costs because to her mind, it's better to be alone with a lot of people around, than to be alone with nobody else around. ************************************************************ Next up: The Infernal Opposition ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 1997 18:38:12 -0400 From: Elizabeth McCoy Subject: Re: IN> [Dark Victory] Media Malakim At 4:32 PM -0500 10/24/97, Redneck Gaijin wrote: >>Lessee... they could: >> >>Hunt down sabboteurs of the comm network. >> >>Hunt down enemy propagandists and censors. >> >>Rebut enemy propaganda (combat on the verbal or artistic level). Anyways, here ya go... Zeiteng, Baron of Media, Demon of Trends "What is life but constant change? Let me show you how to keep up with the crowds, my friends, and you'll never be an outcast again..." Few were surprised when this aggressive Shedim was issued a Word of his own. When Nybbas came into power, Zeiteng delighted in moving across the Corporeal realm, fixating one human mind after another on meaningless tripe as reality went ignored. The mortals were all too eager to believe and follow what their shows and commercials told them; keeping them enthralled was a fairly simple job. Every decade, just to make sure the sheep were keeping inline, the Prince of Media would slowly shift trends and watch the world keep in step. No drastic or sudden changes, of course--no one wants to risk alienating his audience--just enough to keep the population at his beck and call. That is, until Zeiteng got bored. The Baron proudly narrates of the sudden flash of sheer genius and brilliance that led to his inspired plan, though the general consensus of those present at the time is a lack of patience and self-control on Zeiteng's part. He began working on bold, compelling new fads and trends, capturing the attention of the nation...then quickly (within a year or two at times) altering or even reversing the focus of the trend, as if actually *daring* the populace to stay in synch. As the story goes, when he realized what his Servitor had done, Nybbas was about to roast Zieteng's non-corporeal ass on a spit...until the ratings came in. The world was hooked. They *wanted* to follow these exciting new trends. They *loved* competing to see who could keep up and who would fall out of grace with the cool crowd. Their petty rivalries were magnified all the more by making these fads even pettier. Nybass did a full 180-degrees and promoted Zeiteng to Baron on the spot. Zeiteng began orchestrating wilder and crazier (as well as shorter) fads over the years. His overall goal is to reduce the world's attention span and patience to nothing, with the added side benefit of promoting division between artificial classes (the "in crowd" and the "behind the times" crowd). From ripping holes in jeans to carrying around Tamagotchi virtual pets, Zeiteng has humanity racing from one trend to another breathlessly. He received his Word a few decades ago, and his arrogance has increased tenfold (though most demons must admit that it is justified). DISSONANCE It is dissonant for a Servitor of Zeiteng to oppose or decry any movement or trend that is just beginning to gain popularity. This only applies to meaningless trends; it would certainly not be dissonant to disrupt a church rally that was beginning to draw in new souls! Similarly, they acquire dissonance when supporting a trend that is beginning to fall out of fashion; Zeiteng's demons are expected to always be one step ahead of the latest fads. BAND ATTUNEMENTS Zeiteng does not have a great number of Servitors yet, having just acquired his Word. As such, his Servitors only have access to Nybass' Band Attunements. However, he has perfected one Servitor Attunement which is available and one Rite which all his followers get. SERVITOR ATTUNEMENT CHARMING TRINKETS This lets the user cast the Song of Charm on any "trendy" object--that is, any object that is currently a major craze about (GM's call). Last year, a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers shirt would've qualified, while this year, a Tamagotchi would count. Any version of the song may be cast, though the Corporeal version halves the check digit (round up). Once the object is worn (or attached to the keychain, etc.), the Song of Charm affects that person automatically. The duration of the song is measured in *weeks* instead of minutes, but is only active when the item is being worn (or etc.). The victim is unlikely to notice this; mortals roll against Perception at -2 whenever the object is taken off, then put back on again, while any affected Celestials roll at no penalty. Damage to the item dissipates the spell immediately. BASIC RITE Get a group of people to put down or ridicule a person for participating in an obsolete trend or failing to follow the latest trend. What is a "charmed person"? What is "charming"? Is it just a reference to the Song of Charm? (That seems to be the only answer so far.) Is it something I missed about the Lilim? Is it something to do with reaction rolls? It just seemed kind of unlikely that an Attunement would be ONLY USEFUL with one song.... Rev. Pee Kitty, of the order Malkavian-Dobbsian (Married to Rev. A couple of notes: 1) A Celestial can shatter their own Heart with an act of Will, if they are touching it. A Malakim would most definately do so as soon as his corporeal vessel died - he may be able to break other hearts, too, before he died. 2) A Heart can be used to to find where an Celestial is, and even maybe what they are doing.
