Where in the p.68 combat sequence would the perception roll happen? Right after the attack between steps 1 and 2? That seems to give too little advantage to a surprise attack. What about the case where the will roll is as a defense for a sensing Attunement or Resonance that uses no essence and causes no disturbance? In these cases, the Celestial seemingly has no chance to perceive the act, but even letting a PC make the will roll gives away that something has happened. For example, a Seraphim of Yves might be a lookout for demons using his choir attunement, but the Seraphim is given away if the demon makes the will roll himself and is given a chance to spend essence to defeat the perception. First off, I applaud the idea of these two celestials - solid, intelligent word-concepts, removed from the action-adventure standard. A lot more intriguing than most of the other 'doomed-love-affair' ideas I've seen. Admittedly, I'm dubious about the Elohim. They aren't meant to feel _anything_, from what I understand, not just deny the thiings they do feel. They certainly shouldn't betray any emotion, which could make being one's lover rather frustrating... The Main rules imply that Non-Christian Supernaturals used to exist and that some survived in the sections of the marches that Uriel, couldn't get to i.e. Beleth's side and the Deep. This considering their ability to play hide and seek games with magic would include the Japanese shapechanging fox spirits that used to work as messangers for the Rice god Inari. After all most of the things they are supposed to be able to do come under either changing vessel or the various songs in the main rules. The set of rules under which they work while annoying to most Malakim would have to be said to be Honourable. This leaves out Jordi and Novalis recruiting them in a manner similar to Saint/Godess Brigit being aquired from the celtic pantheon. Roman tradition Skinshifters seem to use magic items or Songs?, to achieve the shift from human to wolf and such capabilities might be one of the exotic Songs that Jordi's soldiers might learn. Traditional Western Shapechangers are a little limited in power to survive an archangel in a miff. after all Uriel used to decorate his palace with dragon skulls and even Micheal has a tense moment or two fighting one of those. The Incident with Uriel seems to imply that the inner heavens had a some what more relaxed attitude to those supernaturals not created by YHWH despite the party line that Uriel and Dominic seem to have been pushing.. I figure it is a human personae that is either carefully cultivated using divine appearances and/or memory implants, or an adopted human personae of somebody who has died, the death has been covered up, and somebody has "stepped into their shoes". Either that, or it is a role that you yourself have actually occupied all these years... nifty idea that... being born, working your way through childhood as a Celestial trapped in a child's body, letting your parents think that they're smarter than you... Either way, at a Role/6 you are so caught up in the Symphony that your non-presence leaves a big hole when you leave! Such roles probably need a lot of maintenance! ("I'm sorry, Dominic, I'd like to help nab those demons, but the kids've got Little League, and the Wife's been nagging me to take her to see that new play, so I'm not sure if I can spare the time... how about next week, huh?") > Ok, Mercurian Dissonace: Is self defense against a human dissonant? We play it that way. Hard-nosed, that's me! ANY violence, even non-fatal violence, causes Dissonance for my Mercurians. > Can Elohim show Emotion as long as they remain Objective? > How would a Murcurain handle the lust Discord, and the Emote skill? Elohim can show emotion, have emotion, cause emotion, and receive emotion. They just can't act upon emotion. Their actions, and the ways in which they choose to change the Symphony, must NOT be based on emotion. Thus, by all means, show emotion! Just don't let that emotion bias your judgement. You may even be able to find enough Reasoned Justification to act in the manner in which your emotions are pushing you. Thus, you could even (objectively, dispassionately) enjoy your actions, since there is reasoned justification AS WELL AS emotional pressure for you to act this way. Lustful (Celestial Discord) simply means that a person is enamoured of the pleasures of the flesh. Mercurians probably don't even NEED this discord... they are already enamoured of the pleasures of the flesh! Elohites, on the other hand, probably are going to get Dissonance every time they act on this discord! Emote is simply expressing emotion through action, without necessarily feeling that emotion. Thus, even an Elohim could handle the Emote skill, since it has nothing to do with what one is actually feeling.(I'm scared spitless, but I choose to show calm, and everybody believes it)(I'm completely calm, but I choose to let them think that I'm scared spitless, and they believe it) Just my take on these questions... anybody else? If we just think of disruptions as 'how many points' or 'calculate what I can get away with' then I think we miss the story point of the sanctity of the symphony as a whole. Angels, for their part, seem to generally seek to guide man to make a choice in the destiny they could attain. Simply showing up and saying 'I'm an angel, there's a God, now lets get to work.' would shatter the ability of man to uplift himself by faith. By the same token, if demons popped up it would probably scare the good (and bad) folks of earth into the arms of Heaven. Of course they can't have that. Certainly there are a lot of maybe and what-if statements that could be made, but as a general rule of thumb for keeping the game in line this works fine. If this issue of concealment is an issue with players in the game, I would say let them reveal themselves if they want. When the hosts of the enemy get through with them, the real fun can begin with their Archangel/Prince. And that's News to Me, Cheers. What exactly does a Role/6 give you? : Could you be invited to a high school reunion htat you never went to? Would : people you see up on the street, come up to you and ask you how you've been : since you moved away int the second grade? This would be an interesting problem for the mischievous GM to throw at a player, but I think a Role/x is more intended as a reactive thing than proactive. To take your examples, the PC could walk into a high school reunion that fit his role and everyone would recognize him and welcome him. : : Ok, Mercurian Dissonace: Is self defense against a human dissonant? I would think so. One doesn't always have to kill in self-defense. You can disarm a foe or render her unconscious. Removing a life from the Symphony is pretty serious for anyone. For the Mercurians, even more so. : : Can Elohim show Emotion as long as they remain Objective? They can fake it. Emote. .j. bcnu ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Apr 1997 03:39:04 -0400 From: "C. J. Hunter" Subject: Re: IN> Inspired by The Saint : Elizabeth Shue... shrug. She blonde, so who cares? Point conceded. Mostly a male reaction to all the "Whoo-ee, that Val Kilmer!" comments I get from lady friends :) : I saw the soundtrack in a CD store yesterday - looked interesting, but : the last soundtrack I bought was _so_ awful (Supercop) that I'm dubious : of all s-tracks now. Again understandable. Good bit of techno, by some good techno bands. the moaning on the Moby track gets annoying, though. : I'm a HK film afficianado, so 'The Saint' would need to be one : shit-hot action film to measure up to the stuff I like. Still, I might : check it out on discount night. Good idea. More of the sneak, sneak, high tech gadgetry espionage film than a John Woo let's-blow-up-four-or-five-helicopters flying fist action film. : And since this has _nothing_ to do with In Nomine, I'll shut up now. : Au contraire, mon frere! During the day he is usually found running errands. At night, Mr. Perkins employs his skills as a burglar to remove and/or plant evidence to promote honesty in trade (For example, he might steal a firm's altered financial records to discreetly leave with the IRS), to keep tabs on the servants of Nybbas, and generally harry the forces of Hell. Thierry uses no role in the symphony and changes the appearance of his vessel often. He also has an Ofanim's inability to sit still. Think of Simon Templar after six cups of coffee. Thierry is a balanced beginning character ready to drop into a campaign (with a few adjustments). He's in my campaign as a sort of deux ex machina man, showing up where the PCs least expect to lend a hand if necessary. .j. bcnu ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Apr 1997 10:47:52 -0400 From: Joshua Mosqueira Subject: Re: IN> Bodhi's Heart-Breakers Stuff on Benon and Lysania snipped, cool characters though... > Admittedly, I'm dubious about the Elohim. They aren't meant to feel >_anything, from what I understand, not just deny the thiings they do >feel. Just because the Elohim are objective it does not mean that they feel nothing, or that they have no emotions. On the other hand it is their deep sensitivity and sympathy to the Symphony that allows them to be objective; they understand the subtle nuances that are almost invisible to others and this is why they must remain "objective" if not they would fall. Part of what makes the Elohim such tragic characters is that they must suppress and deny their own affection and love towards the Symphony. If the Elohim have not emotions, or can not feel anything, well then they become nothing more than Celestial Spocks. My reading is that the Elohim are blessed by being able to see what others (even other angels) can not, and their subjective dissonance was imposed by God to prevent them from becoming to enamored to the whole of creation. ______________________________________________ Joshua Mosqueira, effigy@total.net ______________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Apr 1997 20:24:30 -0700 From: Hollis McCray Subject: Re: IN> Character Sheets At 11:03 PM 4/17/97 -0500, you wrote: > Hello all, I'm new to the list and look forward to conversing with you >all.
